Summary

The Introduction poses the problem: How should we use the word “Islam” in the study of Islam. People write about Islam as if it was a single entity, but a text from the Travels of Ibn Baṭṭūṭah illustrates that Muslims traveling in Islamdom found significant variations from place to place. How does this affect our field of study?
