Section I - Law, Sloka, and Sources
Published online by Cambridge University Press: 20 November 2020
Summary
Section I introduces the work's subject, advances its thesis, and evaluates the original source material available for accomplishing its objectives. In reconstructing traditional Javanese written law, the focus is upon the key indigenous principles of customary law, the sloka phenomena of the title. Understanding such principles renders comprehensible the contents of hundreds of Javanese manuscript folios comprising that law. Despite a wellinformed colonial administrator describing it as a jumble of disorganised and incompatible elements, the fact that the individual sloka phenomena tend to be concentrated in separate sets of texts allows organisation of the available materials into a body of information composed of a reasonably consistent matrix of related components.
