Summary
The chapter deals with the hypothetical non-Western roots of African linguistics with the academic import from the West, thereby creating a vision of ‘African’ African linguistics that would be different from the received Western type. It looks at the developments within Africa and focus areas of research chosen by African linguists, in past and present. It concludes with an agenda for specific needs of postcolonial Africa that African linguistics should address in the future.
