The following is information which the University of Oklahoma's Institutional Review Board, which is the agency which oversees the protection of study participants, requires you to have before deciding whether to participate in this study.
You are being asked to volunteer for this research study. This study is being conducted at the University of Oklahoma. You were selected as a possible participant because of your role as a professional in the juvenile justice system.
I am going to give you some information about the study and please ask if you have any questions or don't understand any part of this information.
The purpose of this study is to examine the extent and possible causes for minority overrepresentation in the juvenile justice system. There are a few different parts to this study. We are analyzing juvenile delinquency data from different agencies and will include survey information from juveniles in public schools. The part that you are being asked to participate in today are interviews with juvenile justice professionals including police officers, juvenile specialists, juvenile court attorneys, and juvenile court justices.
If you agree to be in this study, you will be asked to answer questions regarding your background, for general demographic purposes and specific questions about possible contributing factors to minority overrepresentation at many stages of the juvenile justice system.
