Summary

This chapter focuses on currently available computerized cognitive and social cognitive training programs, examines their salient features, and discusses their effects. It presents data on neurobiological mechanisms that appear to be key aspects of successful cognitive training. The Psychological Software Services CogRehab software, originally designed for patients with traumatic brain injury, has been used in a number of studies in schizophrenia. Cognitive enhancement therapy (CET) is a small-group approach for the treatment of social cognitive and neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia. The neuropsychological and educational approach to remediation (NEAR) program showed variable effects on cognition, symptoms, and functioning. The Brain fitness program (BFP) shows consistent improvement on measures of verbal working memory, verbal learning, and global cognition in three double-blind studies with a computer games control condition. Impaired social cognition is a core feature of schizophrenia and an important treatment target that is associated with functional outcomes.
