Summary
Ein panegyrikos ist für eine panegyris bestimmt: das liegt im namen. Isokrates wollte den seinen freilich nicht selbst halten, aber er tat doch so, und das buch sollte zu dem feste erscheinen, und der jahrmarkt gab die beste gelegenheit es unter die leute zu bringen. also haben wir, wie für eine tragoedie ein Dionysosfest, so für einen panegyrikos eine panegyris zu suchen, wenn wir ihn datiren wollen. mit einer so einfachen uberlegung ist die schönste rede des Isokrates auf die hundertste olympiade, spätsommer 380, festgelegt. denn dass die olympische panegyris gemeint ist, folgt daraus notwendig, dass diese rede auf die olympischen reden des Gorgias und Lysias bezug nimmt, zu ihnen in concurrenz tritt und sie überwindet. selbstverständlich ist ein buch, das im august erscheinen soli, etliche monate vorher ‘im manuscript abgeschlossen’, und ein mühsam arbeitender schriftsteller wird ganze partien schon viel früher angelegt und ausgeführt haben, wenn auch bei der schlussredaction alles eine gemeinsame politur erbielt. es ist selbst bei den rasch gearbeiteten komoedien gut, solche notwendigen umstände nicht zu vergessen, wenn man die einzelnen anspielungen mit dem tage der aufführung zusammenhält: wie viel mehr gilt es hier.
