Summary
Die Politie hat für die chronologisch dunkele periode 479–45 einige feste punkte gegeben, durch die Themistoklesanekdote aber gedroht, alles zu verwirren. bei der nachprüfung stellte sich mir zur eigenen überraschung heraus, dass das mistrauen gegen die ergebnisse der zeitrechnung für diese periode, das ich bisher gehegt hatte, nur so weit berechtigt war, als es den modernen gebäuden galt, die ohne ausnahme starke gewaltmittel gegenüber den zeugnissen brauchen. lässt man dagegen die zuverlässige überlieferung stehn, so ergibt sich ein resultat von sehr erfreulicher einfachheit und sicherheit. obwol also neues gerade gar nichts von mir aufgestellt wird, halte ich für gut, eine zeittafel vorzulegen. die methode, dünkt mich, spricht für sich selbst, die genauen und absolut, nicht bloss relativ, gegebenen datirungen an einander zu reihen. wenn sie stimmen, so ist es gut; die relativen angaben müssen sich dann fügen, und es hat historisch sogar nur ein geringes interesse, wie das bewerkstelligt wird.
Es kommt freilich darauf an, welche voraussetzungen man macht, und wie weit man exacte genauigkeit überhaupt für erreichbar hält. ich schicke deshalb die grundsätze voraus, auf deren boden ich allein debattiren kann.
1) die zeitrechnung ist die attische. alle angaben der späteren gehen auf attische jahre zurück, abgesehen von dem persischen kanon der könige.) also sind die einzig absolut verlässlichen daten die auf den attischen archon gestellten, zumal sie entweder direct in urkunden erhalten sind oder aus der chronik stammen.
