De Ionis erroribus multi multa disputarunt, alii aliud recte perspicientes, sed, quod mirum est, de falsis facilius persuadentes quam de veris. Quin qui novissime de ea re integrum volumen primum Geographiae mythicae incredibili diligentia comportatisqae omnis aevi scriptorum testimoniis conscripsit, C. H. Guil. Völckerus, non modo aliena multa atque haud facile probabilia, sed nonnulla etiam aperte errata verbisque poetae repugnantia in medium attulit. Nominavit ille p. 8. seq. ceteros qui se in eodem argumento exercuerunt, omissis tamen Ioanne Georgio Walthero, qui haec attigit in dissertalione de Catabathmo, quae est in eius Animadversionibus historicis et criticis, editis Weissenfelsae a. 1748. et Hermanno Rcinganum, cuius disputatio inserta est Iahnii Annalibus a. 1828. vol. II. Eodem autem tempore fere, quo Völckerus, disseruit de illa materia R. H. Klausenius in Musei Rhenani vol. III.

Quemadmodum uniuscuiusque rei recte agendae certa quaedam ratio est, sic etiam in his poetarum fabulosis locorum descriptionibus regulae quaedam observandae sunt, sine quibus non potest recte procedere veri investigate. Ac primo per sc patet, omnem explicandi conatum inanem esse, qui non ab iusta interpretatione verborum proficiscatur. Atqui hoc in genere fere omnium, qui has et similes res expedire studuerunt, tantam deprehendimus vel levitatem vel imperitiam, ut non sit mirum, si alii, qui verba scriptorum recte expendepe sciant, commenta nullo fundamento nixa probarc nequeant.
