Summary
Expecting is an attitude directed at possible future events, in which one regards them as probable or likely to occur. Heidegger says, “as care, Dasein is essentially ahead of itself” (SZ 337). Obviously, expecting is one way of being ahead of oneself. However, as Being and Time §68 (“The Temporality of Disclosedness in General,” SZ 335–46) explains, expecting and awaiting (Gewärtigen) are not the same.
