We present the highest resolution and sensitivity $\sim$$1.4\,$GHz continuum observations of the Eridanus supergroup obtained as a part of the Widefield Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) L-band Legacy All-sky Blind surveY (WALLABY) pre-pilot observations using the ASKAP. We detect 9461 sources at 1.37 GHz down to a flux density limit of $\sim$$0.1$ mJy at $6.1''\times 7.9''$ resolution with a median root mean square of 0.05 mJy beam$^{-1}$. We find that the flux scale is accurate to within 5 % (compared to NVSS at 1.4 GHz). We then determine the global properties of eight Eridanus supergroup members, which are detected in both radio continuum and neutral hydrogen (HI) emission, and find that the radio-derived star formation rates (SFRs) agree well with previous literature. Using our global and resolved radio continuum properties of the nearby Eridanus galaxies, we measure and extend the infrared-radio correlation (IRRC) to lower stellar masses and inferred SFRs than before. We find the resolved IRRC to be useful for: (1) discriminating between active galactic nuclei and star-forming galaxies; (2) identifying background radio sources; and (3) tracing the effects of group environment pre-processing in NGC 1385. We find evidence for tidal interactions and ram-pressure stripping in the HI, resolved spectral index and IRRC morphologies of NGC 1385. There appears to be a spatial coincidence (in projection) of double-lobed radio jets with the central HI hole of NGC 1367. The destruction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons by merger-induced shocks may be driving the observed WISE W3 deficit observed in NGC 1359. Our results suggest that resolved radio continuum and IRRC studies are excellent tracers of the physical processes that drive galaxy evolution and will be possible on larger sample of sources with upcoming ASKAP radio continuum surveys.

While unobscured and radio-quiet active galactic nuclei are regularly being found at redshifts $z > 6$ , their obscured and radio-loud counterparts remain elusive. We build upon our successful pilot study, presenting a new sample of low-frequency-selected candidate high-redshift radio galaxies (HzRGs) over a sky area 20 times larger. We have refined our selection technique, in which we select sources with curved radio spectra between 72–231 MHz from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array (GLEAM) survey. In combination with the requirements that our GLEAM-selected HzRG candidates have compact radio morphologies and be undetected in near-infrared $K_{\rm s}$ -band imaging from the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, we find 51 new candidate HzRGs over a sky area of approximately $1200\ \mathrm{deg}^2$ . Our sample also includes two sources from the pilot study: the second-most distant radio galaxy currently known, at $z=5.55$ , with another source potentially at $z \sim 8$ . We present our refined selection technique and analyse the properties of the sample. We model the broadband radio spectra between 74 MHz and 9 GHz by supplementing the GLEAM data with both publicly available data and new observations from the Australia Telescope Compact Array at 5.5 and 9 GHz. In addition, deep $K_{\rm s}$ -band imaging from the High-Acuity Widefield K-band Imager (HAWK-I) on the Very Large Telescope and from the Southern Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey Regions $K_{\rm s}$ -band Survey (SHARKS) is presented for five sources. We discuss the prospects of finding very distant radio galaxies in our sample, potentially within the epoch of reionisation at $z \gtrsim 6.5$ .

Rest-frame mid- to far-infrared (IR) spectroscopy is a powerful tool to study how galaxies formed and evolved, because a major part of their evolution occurs in heavily dust enshrouded environments, especially at the so-called Cosmic Noon ( $1< z < 3$ ). Using the calibrations of IR lines and features, recently updated with Herschel and Spitzer spectroscopy, we predict their expected fluxes with the aim to measure the Star Formation (SF) and the Black Hole Accretion (BHA) rates in intermediate to high redshift galaxies. On the one hand, the recent launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) offers new mid-IR spectroscopic capabilities that will enable for the first time a detailed investigation of both the SF and the BHA obscured processes as a function of cosmic time. We make an assessment of the spectral lines and features that can be detected by JWST-MIRI in galaxies and active galactic nuclei up to redshift $z \sim 3$ . The fine structure lines of [MgIV]4.49 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ and [ArVI]4.53 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ can be used as BHA rate tracers for the $1 \lesssim z \lesssim 3$ range, and we propose the [NeVI]7.65 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ line as the best tracer for $z \lesssim 1.5$ . The [ArII]6.98 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ and [ArIII]8.99 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ lines can be used to measure the SF rate at $z \lesssim 3$ and $z \lesssim 2$ , respectively, while the stronger [NeII]12.8 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ line exits the JWST-MIRI spectral range above $z \gtrsim 1.2$ . At higher redshifts, the PAH features at 6.2 and 7.7 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ can be observed at $z \lesssim 3$ and $z \lesssim 2.7$ , respectively. On the other hand, rest-frame far-IR spectroscopic observations of high redshift galaxies ( $z \gtrsim 3$ ) have been collected with the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in the last few years. The observability of far-IR lines from ALMA depends on the observed frequency, due to the significant decrease of the atmospheric transmission at the highest frequencies ( $\gtrsim420\,\rm{Hz}$ ). The [CII]158 $\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ line is a reliable tracer of the SF rate and can in most cases ( $0.9 \lesssim z \lesssim 2$ and $2 \lesssim z \lesssim 9$ ) be observed. Additionally, we propose the use of the combination of [OIII]88 $\,\unicode{x03BC}$ m and [OI]145 $\,\unicode{x03BC}$ m lines as an alternative SF rate tracer, that can be detected above $z \gtrsim 3$ . Overall, we emphasize the importance of using multi-feature analysis to measure both BHA and SFR, since individual tracers can be strongly dependent on the local ISM conditions and vary from source to source. However, we conclude that the peak of the obscured SF and BHA activities at Cosmic Noon falls outside the wavelength coverage of facilities currently operating or under development. A new IR space telescope covering the full IR spectral range from about 10 to $300\,\unicode{x03BC}\textrm{m}$ and actively cooled to achieve high sensitivity, will be needed.

Mid- and far-infrared (IR) photometric and spectroscopic observations are fundamental to a full understanding of the dust-obscured Universe and the evolution of both star formation and black hole accretion in galaxies. In this work, using the specifications of the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) as a baseline, we investigate the capability to study the dust-obscured Universe of mid- and far-IR photometry at 34 and $70\, {\rm{\mu }}\mathrm{m}$ and low-resolution spectroscopy at $17{-}36\, {\rm{\mu }}\mathrm{m}$ using the state-of-the-art Spectro-Photometric Realisations of Infrared-selected Targets at all-z (Spritz) simulation. This investigation is also compared to the expected performance of the Origins Space Telescope and the Galaxy Evolution Probe. The photometric view of the Universe of a SPICA-like mission could cover not only bright objects (e.g. $L_{IR}>10^{12}\,{\rm L}_{\odot}$ ) up to ${z}=10$ , but also normal galaxies ( $L_{IR}<10^{11}\,{\rm L}_{\odot}$ ) up to $\textit{z}\sim4$ . At the same time, the spectroscopic observations of such mission could also allow us to estimate the redshifts and study the physical properties for thousands of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei by observing the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and a large set of IR nebular emission lines. In this way, a cold, 2.5-m size space telescope with spectro-photometric capability analogous to SPICA, could provide us with a complete three-dimensional (i.e. images and integrated spectra) view of the dust-obscured Universe and the physics governing galaxy evolution up to $\textit{z}\sim4$ .

We draw the K-band luminosity functions (CLFs) of young massive clusters (YMCs) hosted by 34 SUNBIRD targets to evaluate the impact of the host galaxy environment on their YMC properties. The depth and high resolution of the NIR images (PSF ∼ 0.1”) allow us to test whether CLF power-law slopes (α) of high star-forming galaxies are similar to those of gas-poor low star formation rate (SFR) galaxies. We found that α ranges between 1.53 and 2.41 with a median value of 1.87 ± 0.23. We also performed correlation searches between α and the host global properties and noticed that α decreases with an increasing SFR and SFR density. On sub-galactic scales, CLF slopes of cluster-rich galaxies differ by ∼0.5. Our NIR CLF analyses suggest that the extreme environment of high SFR galaxies such as the SUNBIRD sample is likely to affect the formation mechanisms of YMCs and hence to govern the ongoing small-scale SF processes of the host galaxy.

The interplay between star formation (SF) activity and active galactic nuclei (AGN) governs the co-evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their host galaxies. AGN feedback has been hailed as the de facto process to suppress, or even shut down SF within the framework of hierarchical galaxy merger based on the current ΛCDM paradigm. However, it is unclear what physical processes regulate the growth of SMBHs and how SMBHs and their evolution are interconnected with their host galaxies when SMBHs and host galaxies are of hugely different physical scales. In fact, there has been no observational evidence to show that AGN feedback works, but rather some evidence to speculate that the more powerful AGNs reside in the more actively star-forming host galaxies. While it is difficult to measure the amount of SF from AGN host galaxies, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features emerged as good proxies for this purpose. Although having several caveats as SFR indicators, such as metallicity dependency, and non-SF contribution from evolved stellar populations, or AGNs, PAH emissions have been utilized to investigate SF activity of AGN host galaxies with varying results. Utilizing the slitless spectroscopic apability of the AKARI Infrared Camera, we obtained the spectra in the wavelength range of 2∼5 μm from extended regions of 79 type 1 AGN host galaxies to detect and measure the 3.3 μm (PAH) emission feature as star formation rate proxy. Based on 18 sample galaxies, we found that the luminosity of the 3.3 μm PAH emission feature is strongly correlated with AGN luminosity, except for ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Therefore, we suggest that host galaxies with stronger AGN activities have stronger star formation activities. However, it is still unclear why ULIRGs deviate from the correlation, not to mention why the detection rate of the 3.3 μm emission feature is so low. High spatial resolution imaging not only for the circumnuclear region of AGN host galaxies, but also for entire galaxies should help the cause. We present the prospective studies to diagnose SF regulation for AGN host galaxies with various space telescope facilities, such as JWST, and SPHEREx.

This work aims to represent the physical properties of a sample of infrared-bright dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) studied by Suleiman et al. (2022) by fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs). Twenty-eight DOGs were examined at redshifts 0.47 ≤ z ≤ 1.63 discovered by combining images of the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey, VISTA Kilo-degree Infrared Galaxy (VIKING) survey, and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) all-sky survey, and detected at Herschel Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) bands. The results show a correlation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the dust luminosity of Suleiman et al. (2022) DOG sample, the SFR ranges of the sample according to different redshifts, and a comparison between Suleiman et al. (2022) sample and other samples of DOGs.

In the black hole (BH)–galaxy co-evolution framework, most of the star formation (SF) and the BH accretion are expected to take place in highly obscured conditions. The large amount of gas and dust absorbs most of the UV-to-soft-X radiation and re-emits it at longer wavelengths, mostly in the IR. Thus, obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) are very difficult to identify in optical or X-ray bands but shine bright in the IR. Moreover, X-ray background (XRB) synthesis models predict that a large fraction of the yet-unresolved XRB is due to the most obscured (Compton thick, CT: N $_{\text{H}}\ge 10^{24} \,\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ ) of these AGN. In this work, we investigate the synergies between putative IR missions [using SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), proposed for European Space Agency (ESA)/M5 but withdrawn in 2020 October, and Origins Space Telescope, OST, as ‘templates’] and the X-ray mission Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics), which should fly in early 2030s, in detecting and characterising AGN, with a particular focus on the most obscured ones. Using an XRB synthesis model, we estimated the number of AGN and the number of those which will be detected in the X-rays by Athena. For each AGN, we associated an optical-to-Far InfraRed (FIR) spectral energy distribution (SED) from observed AGN with both X-ray data and SED decomposition and used these SEDs to check if the AGN will be detected by SPICA-like or OST at IR wavelengths. We expect that, with the deepest Athena and SPICA-like (or OST) surveys, we will be able to photometrically detect in the IR more than 90% of all the AGN (down to $L_{2-10\text{keV}} \sim 10^{42}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ and up to $z \sim 10$ ) predicted by XRB synthesis modeling, and we will detect at least half of them in the X-rays. The spectroscopic capabilities of the OST can provide ${\approx}51\,000$ and ${\approx}3\,400$ AGN spectra with $R= 300$ at 25–588 $\unicode[Times]{x03BC}$ m in the wide and deep surveys, respectively, the last one up to $z\approx 4$ . Athena will be extremely powerful in detecting and discerning moderate- and high-luminosity AGN, allowing us to properly select AGN even when the mid-IR torus emission is ‘hidden’ by the host galaxy contribution. We will constrain the intrinsic luminosity and the amount of obscuration for $\sim\!20\%$ of all the AGN (and $\sim\!50\%$ of those with $L_{2-10\text{keV}} > 3.2 \times 10^{43}\,\mathrm{erg\ s}^{-1}$ ) using the X-ray spectra provided by Athena WFI. We find that the most obscured and elusive CT-AGN will be exquisitely sampled by SPICA-like mission or OST and that Athena will allow a fine characterisation of the most luminous ones. This will provide a significant step forward in the process of placing stronger constraints on the yet-unresolved XRB and investigating the BH accretion rate evolution up to very high redshift ( $z \ge 4$ ).

We use the SPace Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA) project as a template to demonstrate how deep spectrophotometric surveys covering large cosmological volumes over extended fields (1– $15\, \rm{deg^2}$ ) with a mid-IR imaging spectrometer (17– $36\, \rm{\rm{\upmu m}}$ ) in conjunction with deep $70\, \rm{\rm{\upmu m}}$ photometry with a far-IR camera, at wavelengths which are not affected by dust extinction can answer the most crucial questions in current galaxy evolution studies. A SPICA-like mission will be able for the first time to provide an unobscured three-dimensional (3D, i.e. x, y, and redshift z) view of galaxy evolution back to an age of the universe of less than $\sim$ 2 Gyrs, in the mid-IR rest frame. This survey strategy will produce a full census of the Star Formation Rate (SFR) in the universe, using polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) bands and fine-structure ionic lines, reaching the characteristic knee of the galaxy luminosity function, where the bulk of the population is distributed, at any redshift up to $z \sim 3.5$ . Deep follow-up pointed spectroscopic observations with grating spectrometers onboard the satellite, across the full IR spectral range (17– $210\, \rm{\rm{\upmu m}}$ ), would simultaneously measure Black Hole Accretion Rate (BHAR), from high-ionisation fine-structure lines, and SFR, from PAH and low- to mid-ionisation lines in thousands of galaxies from solar to low metallicities, down to the knee of their luminosity functions. The analysis of the resulting atlas of IR spectra will reveal the physical processes at play in evolving galaxies across cosmic time, especially its heavily dust-embedded phase during the activity peak at the cosmic noon ( $z \sim 1$ –3), through IR emission lines and features that are insensitive to the dust obscuration.

We present the results of a new selection technique to identify powerful ($L_{\rm 500\,MHz} \gt 10^{27}\,\text{WHz}^{-1}$) radio galaxies towards the end of the Epoch of Reionisation. Our method is based on the selection of bright radio sources showing radio spectral curvature at the lowest frequency (${\sim}100\,\text{MHz}$) combined with the traditional faintness in K-band for high-redshift galaxies. This technique is only possible, thanks to the Galactic and Extra-galactic All-sky Murchison Wide-field Array survey which provides us with 20 flux measurements across the 70–$230\,\text{MHz}$ range. For this pilot project, we focus on the GAMA 09 field to demonstrate our technique. We present the results of our follow-up campaign with the Very Large Telescope, Australian Telescope Compact Array, and the Atacama Large Millimetre Array to locate the host galaxy and to determine its redshift. Of our four candidate high-redshift sources, we find two powerful radio galaxies in the $1<z<3$ range, confirm one at $z=5.55$, and present a very tentative $z=10.15$ candidate. Their near-infrared and radio properties show that we are preferentially selecting some of the most radio luminous objects, hosted by massive galaxies very similar to powerful radio galaxies at $1<z<5$. Our new selection and follow-up technique for finding powerful radio galaxies at $z>5.5$ has a high 25–50% success rate.

Using WISE data, we calibrated the W2-W3 colors in terms of star formation rates (SFRs) and applied this calibration to a sample of 1285 QSOs with the highest flux quality, covering a range in redshift from z ˜ 0.3 to z ˜ 3.8. According to our calibration, the SFR increases continuously, reaching a value at z ˜ 3.8 about 3 times higher on average than at lower redshift. This increase in SFR is accompanied by an increase of the BH mass by a factor 100 and a gradual increase of the mean Eddington ratio from 0.1 to 0.3 up to z ˜ 1.5 – 2.0, above which the ratio stays constant, despite a significant increase in BH mass. Therefore, QSOs at high redshifts have both more active BHs and higher levels of star formation activity.

Understanding the interplay between the phenomena of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and starbursts remains an open issue in studies of galaxy evolution. The galaxy NGC 34 is the remnant of the merger of two former gas-rich disc galaxies and it also hosts a strong nuclear starburst. In this work, we map the ionized and molecular gas present in the nuclear regions of the galaxy NGC 34 using adaptive optics (AO) assisted near infrared (NIR) integral field unity (IFU) observations. Our main goals are to better constrain the energy source of this object and to use NGC 34 as a laboratory to probe the AGN-starburst connection in the context of galaxy evolution and AGN feeding and feedback processes.

The evolution of galaxies at Cosmic Noon (1 < z < 3) passed through a dust-obscured phase, during which most stars formed and black holes in galactic nuclei started to shine, which cannot be seen in the optical and UV, but it needs rest frame mid-to-far IR spectroscopy to be unveiled. At these frequencies, dust extinction is minimal and a variety of atomic and molecular transitions, tracing most astrophysical domains, occur. The Space Infrared telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), currently under evaluation for the 5th Medium Size ESA Cosmic Vision Mission, fully redesigned with its 2.5-m mirror cooled down to T < 8K will perform such observations. SPICA will provide for the first time a 3-dimensional spectroscopic view of the hidden side of star formation and black hole accretion in all environments, from voids to cluster cores over 90% of cosmic time. Here we outline what SPICA will do in galaxy evolution studies.

Modelling and interpreting the SEDs of galaxies has become one of the key tools at the disposal of extragalactic astronomers. Ideally, we could hope that, through a detailed study of its SED, we can infer the correct physical properties and the evolutionary history of a galaxy. In the past decade, panchromatic SED fitting, i.e. modelling the SED over the entire UV–submm wavelength regime, has seen an enormous advance. Several advanced new codes have been developed, nearly all based on Bayesian inference modelling. In this review, we briefly touch upon the different ingredients necessary for panchromatic SED modelling, and discuss the methodology and some important aspects of Bayesian SED modelling. The current uncertainties and limitations of panchromatic SED modelling are discussed, and we explore some avenues how the models and techniques can potentially be improved in the near future.

Dust absorbs stellar emission and reradiates this energy in the far-infrared (FIR). FIR observations hence give us a direct view of the dust, and allow us to study its properties. Unfortunately, FIR observations are only available for a small subset of galaxies. In this work, we estimate the global FIR emission from global UV-NIR observations. We show that a machine learning method clearly outperforms a SED modelling approach. For each galaxy, we not only predict the FIR flux across the 6 Herschel bands, but also estimate individual uncertainties. We inspect the worst predictions, and investigate how the machine learning predictor generalizes on new data. Our predictor can be used as a virtual observatory, which is especially useful now that there is still no confirmed next-generation FIR telescope.

I will review the tips learned from panchromatic modeling of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), based on our recent work to study the relationship between AGN and star formation (SF). Several AGN SED models are compared, and a significant AGN contribution is found in the IR luminosities and corresponding star formation rates (SFRs). I will review the AGN-SF relation and how different parameters and sample selections affect the observed correlation. I will then report on the constant ratio discovered between the SFR and the black hole mass accretion rate (BHAR), and their implications on the gas supply and galaxy formation history of these systems. Caveats and important questions to answer are summarized at the end.

Panchromatic modeling is one of the most powerful tools at our disposal to measure reliably the physical properties of galaxies across cosmic times. We present here an entirely new implementation in python of one such tool: CIGALE. Developed along three main design principles: simplicity, modularity, and efficiency, it has proven to be a versatile code that in addition to estimating the physical properties of galaxies (or regions within galaxies), can generate arbitrary sets of theoretical models or be used as a library to build other tools. Among its defining features, it is a truly panchromatic code ranging from the far-ultraviolet to the radio that takes into account numerous physical components (including active nuclei or synchrotron emission), that can fit non-photometric data, handle upper limits, determine photometric redshifts, and even build mock catalogs.

Thanks to deep optical to near-IR imaging and spectroscopy, significant progress is made in characterizing the rest-frame UV to optical properties of galaxies in the early universe (z > 4. Surveys with Hubble, Spitzer, and ground-based facilities (Keck, Subaru, and VLT) provide spectroscopic and photometric redshifts, measurements of the spatial structure, stellar masses, and optical emission lines for large samples of galaxies. Recently, the Atacama Large (Sub) Millimeter Array (ALMA) has become a major player in pushing studies of high redshift galaxies to far-infrared wavelengths, hence making panchromatic surveys over many orders of frequencies possible. While past studies focused mostly on bright sub-millimeter galaxies, the sensitivity of ALMA now enables surveys like ALPINE, which focuses on measuring the gas and dust properties of a large sample of normal main-sequence galaxies at z > 4. Combining observations across different wavelengths into a single, panchromatic picture of galaxy formation and evolution is currently and in the future an important focus of the astronomical community.

Observing high resolution optical to infrared spectra is crucial to understanding how energy is generated in galaxies. We present follow-up optical Keck-II/DEIMOS and infrared Keck-I/MOSFIRE spectra of ∼200 galaxies in the AKARI/North Ecliptic Pole Deep survey region at intermediate redshift. From rest-frame optical emission lines, we classify most of our objects as star-forming (53%), with the MIR selection favoring relatively massive galaxies (median log M/M⊙∼ 10.3). In addition, we combine our spectroscopic redshifts with UV to FIR photometry as inputs in order to model SEDs with CIGALE, and we measure the PAH 7.7 μm luminosity as an SFR indicator.

The infrared Astronomical Satellite AKARI conducted deep (∼0.4 deg2) and wide (∼ 5.4 deg2) surveys around the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) with its InfraRed Camera (IRC) with nine filters continuously covering the 2–25 μm range. These photometric bands include three filters that fill the “ Spitzer gap” between the wavelength coverages of IRAC and MIPS. This unique feature has enabled us to make sensitive mid-infrared detection of AGN candidates at z∼1-2, based on the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) fitting including hot dust emission in the AGN torus. This enables us to compare X-rays and the AGN torus component of the infrared emission to help us identify highly absorbed AGNs, including Compton-thick ones. We report our results of the Chandra observation of the AKARI NEP Deep Field and discuss the prospects for upcoming Spectrum-RG (eROSITA+ART-XC) on the AKARI Wide field.
