In 1978, Bracewell suggested the technique of nulling interferometry to directly image exoplanets which would enable characterisation of their surfaces, atmospheres, weather, and possibly determine their capacity to host life. The contrast needed to discriminate starlight reflected by a terrestrial-type planet from the glare of its host star lies at or beyond a forbidding $10^{-10}$ for an exo-Earth in the habitable zone around a Sun-like star at near-infrared wavelengths, necessitating instrumentation with extremely precise control of the light. Guided Light Interferometric Nulling Technology (GLINT) is a testbed for new photonic devices conceived to overcome the challenges posed by nulling interferometry. At its heart, GLINT employs a single-mode nulling photonic chip fabricated by direct-write technology to coherently combine starlight from an arbitrarily large telescope at 1 550 nm. It operates in combination with an actuated segmented mirror in a closed-loop control system, to produce and sustain a deep null throughout observations. The GLINT South prototype interfaces the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope and was tested on a sample of bright Mira variable stars. Successful and continuous starlight injection into the photonic chip was achieved. A statistical model of the data was constructed, enabling a data reduction algorithm to retrieve contrast ratios of about $10^{-3}$ . As a byproduct of this analysis, stellar angular diameters that were below the telescope diffraction limit ( $\sim$ 100 mas) were recovered with 1 $\sigma$ accuracy and shown to be in agreement with literature values despite working in the seeing-limited regime. GLINT South serves as a demonstration of the capability of direct-write photonic technology for achieving coherent, stable nulling of starlight, which will encourage further technological developments towards the goal of directly imaging exoplanets with future large ground based and space telescopes.

Post-Asymptotic Giant Branch (post-AGB) binary systems are binary interaction products. These stars have recently undergone a strong, but not well understood, binary interaction phase, leading to the formation of stable, compact circumbinary discs. These circumbinary discs are found to show many similar properties to protoplanetary discs around young stars. Here, we focus on one such system, namely IRAS 08544-4431 and resolve the inner regions of the complex circumstellar environment using multi-wavelength infrared interferometric techniques. The visibility data of PIONIER (H-band), GRAVITY (K-band), and MATISSE (L and N band) are analysed together using two families of geometric models, giving a good fit to all data.

With the development of high contrast imaging techniques and instruments, vast efforts have been devoted during the past decades to detect and characterize lighter, cooler and closer companions to nearby stars, and ultimately image new planetary systems. Complementary to other planet-hunting techniques, this approach has opened a new astrophysical window to study the physical properties and the formation mechanisms of brown dwarfs and planets. In this review, I will briefly describe the different observing techniques and strategies used, the main samples of targeted nearby stars, finally the main results obtained so far about exoplanet discoveries characterization of their physical properties, and study of their occurrence and possible formation and evolution mechanisms.

We present multi-epoch millarcsecond resolution images of the most compact supernova remnants in the nearby starburst galaxy M82, spanning 25 years of evolution. In particular, we will briefly discuss the new transient source first detected in 2009 as well as the unusual object 41.95+57.5 and its potential as a GRB afterglow.

We quantify the scientific potential for exoplanet imaging with the mid-infrared E-ELT Imager and Spectrograph (METIS) foreseen as one of the instruments of the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT). We focus on two main science cases: (1) the direct detection of known gas giant planets found by radial velocity (RV) searches; and (2) the direct detection of small (1–4 R⊕) planets around the nearest stars. Under the assumptions made in our modelling, in particular on the achievable inner working angle and sensitivity, our analyses reveal that within a reasonable amount of observing time METIS is able to image >20 already known, RV-detected planets in at least one filter. Many more suitable planets with dynamically determined masses are expected to be found in the coming years with the continuation of RV-surveys and the results from the GAIA astrometry mission. In addition, by extrapolating the statistics for close-in planets found by Kepler, we expect METIS might detect ≈10 small planets with equilibrium temperatures between 200 and 500 K around the nearest stars. This means that (1) METIS will help constrain atmospheric models for gas giant planets by determining for a sizable sample their luminosity, temperature and orbital inclination; and (2) METIS might be the first instrument to image a nearby (super-) Earth-sized planet with an equilibrium temperature near that expected to enable liquid water on a planet surface.

Recent simulation and observational data have been used to investigate the ability of Kozai oscillations to explain the formation of “hot Jupiter” planetary systems. One of the first exoplanets discovered, τ Boo Ab, orbits a star with a binary companion, making it an excellent testbed for this scenario. We have written a three-dimensional Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulator to constrain the orbit of the distant stellar companion τ Boo B, and are currently deriving orbital parameters and confidence intervals. These orbital parameters will confirm or reject Kozai oscillations as a plausible formation mechanism for τ Boo Ab.

The young (12+8−4 Myr) and nearby (19.44±0.05 pc) star β Pictoris is considered one of the best laboratories for the study of early phases of planetary systems formation since the identification of an extended debris disk surrounding the star in 1984. In 2009, we imaged at 3.8 μm with NaCo at VLT a gas giant planet around β Pictoris, roughly along the disk mid-plane, with a semi-major axis between 8 and 14 AU. We present here the first images of the planet in the J (1.265 μm), H (1.66 μm), and M' (4.78 μm) bands obtained between 2011 and 2012. We used these data to build the 1-5 μm spectral energy distribution (SED) of the companion, and to consolidate previous semi-major axis (8-10 AU) estimates. We compared the SED to seven atmospheric models to derive Teff = 1700 ± 100 K. We used the temperature and the luminosity of β Pictoris b to estimate new masses for the companion. We compared these masses to independent constraints set by the orbital parameters and the radial velocities and use them to discuss the formation history of the object.

Chinese Giant Solar Telescope is the next generation ground-based solar telescope. The main science task of this telescope is to observe the ultra fine structures of the solar magnetic field and dynamic field. Due to the advantages in polarization detection and thermal controlling with a symmetrical circular system, the current design of CGST is a 6~8 meter circular symmetrical telescope. The results of simulations and analysis showed that the current design could meet the demands of most science cases not only in infrared bands but also in near infrared bands and even in visible bands. The prominences and the filaments are very important science cases of CGST. The special technologies for prominence observation will be developed, including the day time laser guide star and MCAO. CGST is proposed by all solar observatories and several institutes and universities in China. It is supported by CAS and NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China) as a long term astronomical project.

The possible presence of dust in the habitable zone around nearby main-sequence stars is considered as a major hurdle toward the direct imaging of Earth-like extrasolar planets with future dedicated space-based telescopes (e.g., Roberge et al. 2012). In this context, NASA has funded two ground-based mid-infrared nulling interferometers to combine the large apertures available at the Keck Observatory and the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT). In this poster, we present the preliminary results of the extended survey carried out with the Keck Interferometer Nuller (KIN) between 2008 and 2011 and describe the forthcoming LBTI survey.

We are finally entering an era where radial velocity and direct imaging parameter spaces are starting to overlap. Radial velocity measurements provide us with a minimum mass for an orbiting companion (the mass as a function of the inclination of the system). By following up these long period radial velocity detections with direct imaging we can determine whether a trend seen is due to an orbiting planet at low inclination or an orbiting brown dwarf at high inclination. In the event of a non-detection we are still able to put a limit on the maximum mass of the orbiting body. The Anglo-Australian Planet Search is one of the longest baseline radial velocity planet searches in existence, amongst its targets are many that show long period trends in the data. Here we present our direct imaging survey of these objects with our results to date. ADI Observations have been made using NICI (Near Infrared Coronagraphic Imager) on Gemini South and analysed using an in house, LOCI-like, post processing.

High-mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) are keys to study stellar remnants that are otherwise extremely faint and difficult to observe when isolated. Vela X-1 is a well-known eclipsing HMXB composed of a very massive neutron star orbiting a B0.5I supergiant with a period of 9 days. The supergiant wind is the main feeding material for the accreting neutron star, and its properties are of prime interest to understand the physics at stakes in the accretion process.

In order to characterize the geometry and physical properties of the dense wind at a scale of a few stellar radii, we obtained infrared interferometric observations of Vela X-1 in 2010 using the VLTI/AMBER instrument in the K band (2.2 μm), and in 2012 using the VLTI/PIONIER instrument in the H band (1.6 μm).

Although the apparent disk of the supergiant and the orbital separation of the two objects are beyond the present resolution limit of the VLTI, the K-band observations partially resolve the wind envelope on the two longest baselines. We were able to measure the radius of 265±82 R⊙ for the circumstellar wind at a temperature of 1300 K, assuming a distance of 1.9 kpc. The H-band observations do not resolve the system, and we were able to set an upper limit of 112 R⊙ for the envelope radius at a temperature of 1800 K.

In this work we present the first results of study and comparison of the parameters of quasi-periodic long-term oscillations of microwave emission of large (>0.7 arcmin) sunspots as a result of simultaneous observations with two radioheliographs – NoRH (17 GHz) and Siberian Solar Radio Telescope (SSRT) (5.7 GHz) with 1 minute cadence. Radioheliographs have been working with quite large time overlap (about 5 hours) and have the high spatial resolution: 10 arcsec (NoRH) and 20 arcsec (SSRT). We have found that quasi-periodic long-term oscillations are surely observed at both frequencies with the periods in the range of 20–150 min. We detected common periods for common time of observations with two radioheliographs and interpret this as the consequence of the vertical-radial quasi-periodic displacements of sunspot as a whole structure.

We present a brief description of new complex of space telescopes and spectrographs, TESIS, which will be placed aboard the CORONAS-PHOTON satellite. The complex is intended for high-resolution imaging observation of full Sun in the coronal spectral lines and in the spectral lines of the solar transition region. TESIS will be launched at the end of 2007 – early of 2008. About 25 % of the daily TESIS images will be free for use and for downloading from the TESIS data center that is planned to open 2 months before the TESIS launching at http://www.tesis.lebedev.ru

Adaptive Optics (AO) will be essential for accomplishing many, if not most, of the science objectives currently planned for Extremely Large Telescopes including GMT, OWL, and TMT. AO will be needed to support a range of instrumentation, including near infrared (IR) imagers and spectrometers, mid IR imagers and spectrometers, “planet finding” instrumentation and wide-field optical spectrographs. Multiple advanced AO systems, utilizing the full range of concepts currently under development, will need to be combined into an integrated architecture to meet a broad range of requirements for field-of-view, spatial resolution and spectral bandpass.

In this paper, we describe several of the possible options for these systems and outline the range of issues, trade studies and component development activities which must be addressed. Some of these challenges include very high-order, large-stroke wavefront correction, tip-tilt sensing with faint natural guide stars to maximize sky coverage, laser guide star wavefront sensing on a very large aperture and achieving extremely high contrast ratios for the detection of extra-solar planet and other faint companions of nearby bright stars.

In the frame of the VLT Planet-Finder project, the phase A system study has demonstrated the feasibility of an extreme adaptive optics system aimed at the direct detection of extrasolar giant planets. The main results of this study are presented in this paper.

We discuss the evolution of the habitable zone around low mass and intermediate mass stars as they evolve off the main sequence. This work shows that this class of stars should be included in the search for life because if planets could be found in their habitable zones, they will allow to test different hypothesis concerning the conditions of life formation. For instance if these planets show traces for life, it is possible to empirically determine a lower limit to the timescale for the formation of life. This time scale is not well determined from the Earth's study, as life formation initially occurred during a period of heavy bombardment from comets and asteroids during the formation of the solar system. We will summarize (to the best of our knowledge) some of the recent results concerning the early signs of life on Earth. We will present some of our work in progress in which we evaluate the effects of stellar evolution on the habitable zone changes.

We present two new phase mask coronagraphs implemented with subwavelength diffractive optical elements. The first one is an evolution of the four quadrant phase mask coronagraph (FQPM), which resolves the $\pi$ phase shift chromaticity issue: the four quadrant zeroth order grating (4QZOG). The second one is a totally new design consisting of an optical vortex induced by a space-variant grating: the annular groove phase mask (AGPM) coronagraph is fully symmetric and free from any “shaded zones”. The potential performances of the 4QZOG and AGPM coronagraph are very good, ensuring, for instance, a theoretical contrast of $1.4 \times 10^{-7}$ at 3$\lambda/D$ over the whole K band. These coronagraphs could be used alone on single-pupil telescopes either in space or on the ground (with an adaptive optics system) to detect exoplanets.

This paper presents the status of the EPICS project, an Earth-like Planets Imaging Camera Spectrograph for OWL. We present the Top-Level-Requirements of the instrument and we describe the baseline of the Adaptive Optics system with optimized wave-front sensor. The expected performance in rejection of starlight in the near infrared and in the visible is given. The instruments concepts for detection and characterization of exo-planets will be briefly described. The Signal-to-Noise ratio estimation shows that Earth-like planets can be detected up to 20 pc in a reasonable amount of time. The extremely challenging requirements in terms of static residual errors and differential aberrations are discussed.

A summary is given of the IAU Colloquium No 191 “The Environment and Evolution of Binary and Multiple Stars.” This conference was held in Mérida, Mexico during February 2003 and dedicated to Dr. Arcadio Poveda for his major contributions to binary- and multiple-star systems and dynamics. The conference was organized to discuss the major developments that are occurring in the fields of binary- and multiple-star formation, evolution, dynamics, and the environments where they form and evolve.

We report on the results of a binary survey in the outer parts of the Orion Nebula Cluster, 0.7 to 2 pc from the cluster center. The results should help to decide if the binary formation rate was lower in Orion than in Taurus-Auriga, or if many binaries formed initially, but were destroyed in close stellar encounters. We find that the binary frequency of low-mass stars does not depend on the distance to the cluster center. The companion star frequency of intermediate- to high-mass stars shows a trend to decrease with cluster radius, but the statistical significance of this trend is rather weak.
