Laser-accelerated electrons are promising in producing gamma-photon beams of high peak flux for the study of nuclear photonics, obtaining copious positrons and exploring photon–photon interaction in vacuum. We report on the experimental generation of brilliant gamma-ray beams with not only high photon yield but also low divergence, based on picosecond laser-accelerated electrons. The 120 J 1 ps laser pulse drives self-modulated wakefield acceleration in a high-density gas jet and generates tens-of-MeV electrons with 26 nC and divergence as small as $1.51{}^{\circ}$ . These collimated electrons produce gamma-ray photons through bremsstrahlung radiation when transversing a high-Z solid target. We design a high-energy-resolution Compton-scattering spectrometer and find that a total photon number of $2.2\times {10}^9$ is captured within an acceptance angle of $1.1{}^{\circ}$ for photon energies up to $16\;\mathrm{MeV}$ . Comparison between the experimental results and Monte Carlo simulations illustrates that the photon beam inherits the small divergence from electrons, corresponding to a total photon number of $2.2\times {10}^{11}$ and a divergence of $7.73{}^{\circ}$ .

The Compton signal in electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is used to determine the projected electron momentum density of states for the solid. A frequent limitation however is the strong dynamical scattering of the incident electron beam within a crystalline specimen, i.e. Bragg diffracted beams can be additional sources of Compton scattering that distort the measured profile from its true shape. The Compton profile is simulated via a multislice method that models dynamical scattering both before and after the Compton energy loss event. Simulations indicate the importance of both the specimen illumination condition and EELS detection geometry. Based on this, a strategy to minimize diffraction artifacts is proposed and verified experimentally. Furthermore, an inversion algorithm to extract the projected momentum density of states from a Compton measurement performed under strong diffraction conditions is demonstrated. The findings enable a new route to more accurate electron Compton data from crystalline specimens.

The authors present and discuss a method for simultaneous quantitative analysis of total loss on ignition (LOI) (CO2 + H2O) and CO2 content separate from the LOI, in an industrial environment of quicklime production. Total LOI is determined by the Compton scattered RhKα tube radiation which is used directly in the calibration equation. The resulting calibration curve for LOI, including matrix correction shows an accuracy of 0.15 mass%. The carbon content (CO2) is distinguished from total LOI by measuring CKα radiation, which is possible with the required accuracy by employing a new multilayer analyzer with greatly improved background characteristics. The method aims at high reliability and sample throughput and at becoming a less time-consuming alternative to the conventional method of LOI determination by weighing sequences before and after “ignition” at 1050 °C.

We present the first steps of a design of the optimal parameters for a full Bragg X-Ray free electron laser (BX-FEL). Aiming towards a future source of coherent X-ray radiation, operating in the strong Compton regime, we envisage the system to be the seed for an advanced light source or compact medical X-ray source. Here we focus on the design of the accelerator parameters: maximum gradient, optimal accelerated charge, maximum efficiency, and ‘wake coefficient’, which relates to the decelerating electric field generated due to the motion of a charged-line or train of charged-lines. Specifically, we demonstrate that the maximum efficiency has optimal value and given the fluence of the materials, the maximum accelerated charge in the train is constant. These two results might be important in any future design.

We calculated mass attenuation coefficients, effective atomic numbers and Kerma relative to air for human organ and tissue substitutes (i.e. wax, plastic and polymer materials). The effective atomic numbers of the tissue substitutes were calculated by the direct method, interpolation method, Auto-Zeff software and single value XMuDat program and then compared. The calculated effective atomic numbers were also compared with available experimental data and a good agreement was observed. A large difference in effective atomic numbers calculated by the direct and interpolation methods was observed in photoelectric and pair-production regions. The direct method was found to be appropriate for effective atomic number computation in low-(>10 keV) and medium-(0.1 ≤ E ≤ 10 MeV) photon energy regions. Kerma relative to air of the selected tissue substitutes was found to be dependent upon the atomic number and element compositions, which show a sharp peak due to K-edge absorption.

The nonlinear Compton scattering by a linearly polarized laser pulse of finite duration is analyzed, with a focus on the spin effects of target electrons. We show that, although the Compton scattering accompanied by the electron no-spin flip is dominant, for some energy regions of Compton photons their emission is dominated by the process leading to the electron spin flip. This feature is observed for different pulse durations, and can be treated as a signature of quantum behavior. Similar conclusions are reached when analyzing the scattered electron energy spectra. This time, the sensitivity of spin effects to the carrier-envelope phase of the driving pulse is demonstrated. The possibility of electron acceleration by means of Compton scattering is also discussed.

Mass attenuation coefficient corrections, for Rietveld phase analysis with an external compositional calibration standard, may be made using Compton scattering intensities measured by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The method is mainly useful for Rietveld phase analysis when mixing an internal standard is impossible or undesirable. The validity of the method has been demonstrated using a suite of alumina-zirconia powders of known composition. Also presented are results for a typical application—determination of phase composition depth profiles defining the graded compositional character of an aluminium titanate/zirconia-alumina ceramic composite.

Intense Compton-scattering γ-ray radiation driven by laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) and generation of ultrashort positron beams are investigated by Monte Carlo simulation. Using an LWFA driven GeV electron bunch and a 45 femtosecond, 90 mJ/pulse, and 10 Hz Ti:Sapphire laser for driving the Compton scattering, fs γ-ray pulses were generated. The latter have a flux of ≥108/s, peak brightness of ≥1020 photons/(s mm2 mrad2 0.1% bandwidth), and photon energy of 5.9 to 23.2 MeV. The γ-ray pulses then impinge on a thin high-Z target. More than 107 positrons/s in the form of sub-100 fs pulses at several MeV can be produced. Such ultrashort positron pulses can be useful as the pump-probe type positron annihilation spectroscopy as well as in other applications.

Gamma-ray energy absorption buildup factors of gaseous mixtures; neon (95%) + argon (5%), argon (95%) + acetylene (5%), argon (95%) + methane (5%), argon (95%) + carbon dioxide (5%), methane (70%) + pentane (30%) and argon (90%) + methane (10%) were studied by Geometrical Progression (G-P) fitting for the photon energy range 0.015-15 MeV. It was found that the equivalent atomic number, Zeq of the gaseous mixtures sharply reduces after 1 MeV photon energy. The Zeq for the mixture of methane (70%) + pentane (30%) is the minimum, whereas the maximum is for argon (95%) + carbon dioxide (5%) for the photon energies under investigation. The Energy Absorption Buildup Factor (EABF) for methane (70%) + pentane (30%) was found to be the highest among all the selected gaseous mixtures. The chemical composition of the gaseous mixtures has an impact on the EABF values for photon energy and penetration depth. The investigation of the EABF is useful for selection of gaseous mixtures in design consideration of gaseous radiation detectors for gamma radiation.

Inverse Compton scattering is a promising method to implement a high brightness, ultra-short, energy tunable X-ray source at accelerator facilities. We have developed an inverse Compton backscattering X-ray source driven by the multi-10 TW laser installed at Daresbury. Hard X-rays, with spectral peaks ranging from 15 to 30 keV, depending on the scattering geometry, will be generated through the interaction of laser pulses with electron bunches delivered by the energy recovery linac machine, initially known as energy recovery linac prototype and subsequently renamed accelerators and lasers in combined experiments. X-ray pulses containing 9 × 107 photons per pulse will be created from head-on collisions, with a pulse duration comparable to the incoming electron bunch length. For transverse collisions 8 × 106 photons per pulse will be generated, where the laser pulse transit time defines the X-ray pulse duration. The peak spectral brightness is predicted to be ~1021 photons/(s mm2 mrad2 0.1% Δλ/λ).

Laser-Compton scattering (LCS) experiments were carried out at the Idaho Accelerator Center (ICA) using the 5 ns (FWHM) and 22 MeV electron beam. The electron beam was brought to an approximate head-on collision with a 7 ns (FWHM), 10 Hz, 29 MW peak power Nd:YAG laser. We observed clear and narrow X-ray peaks resulting from the interaction of relativistic electrons with the 532 nm Nd:YAG laser second harmonic line on top of a very low bremsstrahlung background. We have developed a method of using LCS as a non-intercepting electron beam monitor. Unlike the method used by Leemans et al. (1996), our method focused on the variation of the shape of the LCS spectrum rather than the LCS intensity as a function of the observation angle in order to extract the electron beam parameters at the interaction region. The electron beam parameters were determined by making simultaneous fits to spectra taken across the LCS X-ray cone. We also used the variation of LCS X-ray peak energy and spectral width as a function of the detector angles to determine the electron beam angular spread, and direction and compared the results to the previous method. Experimental data show that in addition to being viewed as potential bright, tunable and monochromatic X-ray source, LCS can provide important information on electron beam pulse length, direction, energy, angular, and energy spread. Since the quality of LCS X-ray peaks, such as degree of monochromaticity, peak energy and flux, depends strongly on the electron beam parameters, LCS can therefore be viewed as an important non-destructive means for electron beam diagnostics.

The Compton scattering of a terawatt-class, femtosecond laser pulse by a high-brightness, relativistic electron beam has been demonstrated as a viable approach toward compact, tunable sources of bright, femtosecond, hard X-ray flashes. The main focus of this article is a detailed description of such a novel X-ray source, namely the PLEIADES (Picosecond Laser–Electron Inter-Action for the Dynamical Evaluation of Structures) facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. PLEIADES has produced first light at 70 keV, thus enabling critical applications, such as advanced backlighting for the National Ignition Facility and in situ time-resolved studies of high-Z materials. To date, the electron beam has been focused down to σx = σy = 27 μm rms, at 57 MeV, with 266 pC of charge, a relative energy spread of 0.2%, a normalized horizontal emittance of 3.5 mm·mrad, a normalized vertical emittance of 11 mm·mrad, and a duration of 3 ps rms. The compressed laser pulse energy at focus is 480 mJ, the pulse duration 54 fs Intensity Full Width at Half-Maximum (IFWHM), and the 1/e2 radius 36 μm. Initial X rays produced by head-on collisions between the laser and electron beams at a repetition rate of 10 Hz were captured with a cooled CCD using a CsI scintillator; the peak photon energy was approximately 78 keV, and the observed angular distribution was found to agree very well with three-dimensional codes. The current X-ray dose is 3 × 106 photons per pulse, and the inferred peak brightness exceeds 1015 photons/(mm2 × mrad2 × s × 0.1% bandwidth). Spectral measurements using calibrated foils of variable thickness are consistent with theory. Measurements of the X-ray dose as a function of the delay between the laser and electron beams show a 24-ps full width at half maximum (FWHM) window, as predicted by theory, in contrast with a measured timing jitter of 1.2 ps, which contributes to the stability of the source. In addition, K-edge radiographs of a Ta foil obtained at different electron beam energies clearly demonstrate the γ2-tunability of the source and show very good agreement with the theoretical divergence-angle dependence of the X-ray spectrum. Finally, electron bunch shortening experiments using velocity compression have also been performed and durations as short as 300 fs rms have been observed using coherent transition radiation; the corresponding inferred peak X-ray flux approaches 1019 photons/s.
