We show that an $n$-uniform maximal intersecting family has size at most $e^{-n^{0.5+o(1)}}n^n$. This improves a recent bound by Frankl ((2019) Comb. Probab. Comput. 28(5) 733–739.). The Spread Lemma of Alweiss et al. ((2020) Proceedings of the 52nd Annual ACM SIGACT Symposium on Theory of Computing.) plays an important role in the proof.

An n-vertex graph is called C-Ramsey if it has no clique or independent set of size $C\log _2 n$ (i.e., if it has near-optimal Ramsey behavior). In this paper, we study edge statistics in Ramsey graphs, in particular obtaining very precise control of the distribution of the number of edges in a random vertex subset of a C-Ramsey graph. This brings together two ongoing lines of research: the study of ‘random-like’ properties of Ramsey graphs and the study of small-ball probability for low-degree polynomials of independent random variables.

The proof proceeds via an ‘additive structure’ dichotomy on the degree sequence and involves a wide range of different tools from Fourier analysis, random matrix theory, the theory of Boolean functions, probabilistic combinatorics and low-rank approximation. In particular, a key ingredient is a new sharpened version of the quadratic Carbery–Wright theorem on small-ball probability for polynomials of Gaussians, which we believe is of independent interest. One of the consequences of our result is the resolution of an old conjecture of Erdős and McKay, for which Erdős reiterated in several of his open problem collections and for which he offered one of his notorious monetary prizes.

In this paper, we completely resolve the well-known problem of Erdős and Sauer from 1975 which asks for the maximum number of edges an n-vertex graph can have without containing a k-regular subgraph, for some fixed integer $k\geq 3$. We prove that any n-vertex graph with average degree at least $C_k\log \log n$ contains a k-regular subgraph. This matches the lower bound of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi and substantially improves an old result of Pyber, who showed that average degree at least $C_k\log n$ is enough.

Our method can also be used to settle asymptotically a problem raised by Erdős and Simonovits in 1970 on almost regular subgraphs of sparse graphs and to make progress on the well-known question of Thomassen from 1983 on finding subgraphs with large girth and large average degree.

Which patterns must a two-colouring of $K_n$ contain if each vertex has at least $\varepsilon n$ red and $\varepsilon n$ blue neighbours? We show that when $\varepsilon \gt 1/4$, $K_n$ must contain a complete subgraph on $\Omega (\log n)$ vertices where one of the colours forms a balanced complete bipartite graph.

When $\varepsilon \leq 1/4$, this statement is no longer true, as evidenced by the following colouring $\chi$ of $K_n$. Divide the vertex set into $4$ parts nearly equal in size as $V_1,V_2,V_3, V_4$, and let the blue colour class consist of the edges between $(V_1,V_2)$, $(V_2,V_3)$, $(V_3,V_4)$, and the edges contained inside $V_2$ and inside $V_3$. Surprisingly, we find that this obstruction is unique in the following sense. Any two-colouring of $K_n$ in which each vertex has at least $\varepsilon n$ red and $\varepsilon n$ blue neighbours (with $\varepsilon \gt 0$) contains a vertex set $S$ of order $\Omega _{\varepsilon }(\log n)$ on which one colour class forms a balanced complete bipartite graph, or which has the same colouring as $\chi$.

We prove a new sufficient pair degree condition for tight Hamiltonian cycles in $3$-uniform hypergraphs that (asymptotically) improves the best known pair degree condition due to Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi. For graphs, Chvátal characterised all those sequences of integers for which every pointwise larger (or equal) degree sequence guarantees the existence of a Hamiltonian cycle. A step towards Chvátal’s theorem was taken by Pósa, who improved on Dirac’s tight minimum degree condition for Hamiltonian cycles by showing that a certain weaker condition on the degree sequence of a graph already yields a Hamiltonian cycle.

In this work, we take a similar step towards a full characterisation of all pair degree matrices that ensure the existence of tight Hamiltonian cycles in $3$-uniform hypergraphs by proving a $3$-uniform analogue of Pósa’s result. In particular, our result strengthens the asymptotic version of the result by Rödl, Ruciński, and Szemerédi.

We extend the notion of universal graphs to a geometric setting. A geometric graph is universal for a class $\mathcal H$ of planar graphs if it contains an embedding, that is, a crossing-free drawing, of every graph in $\mathcal H$. Our main result is that there exists a geometric graph with $n$ vertices and $O\!\left(n \log n\right)$ edges that is universal for $n$-vertex forests; this generalises a well-known result by Chung and Graham, which states that there exists an (abstract) graph with $n$ vertices and $O\!\left(n \log n\right)$ edges that contains every $n$-vertex forest as a subgraph. The upper bound of $O\!\left(n \log n\right)$ edges cannot be improved, even if more than $n$ vertices are allowed. We also prove that every $n$-vertex convex geometric graph that is universal for $n$-vertex outerplanar graphs has a near-quadratic number of edges, namely $\Omega _h(n^{2-1/h})$, for every positive integer $h$; this almost matches the trivial $O(n^2)$ upper bound given by the $n$-vertex complete convex geometric graph. Finally, we prove that there exists an $n$-vertex convex geometric graph with $n$ vertices and $O\!\left(n \log n\right)$ edges that is universal for $n$-vertex caterpillars.

A chordal graph is a graph with no induced cycles of length at least $4$. Let $f(n,m)$ be the maximal integer such that every graph with $n$ vertices and $m$ edges has a chordal subgraph with at least $f(n,m)$ edges. In 1985 Erdős and Laskar posed the problem of estimating $f(n,m)$. In the late 1980s, Erdős, Gyárfás, Ordman and Zalcstein determined the value of $f(n,n^2/4+1)$ and made a conjecture on the value of $f(n,n^2/3+1)$. In this paper we prove this conjecture and answer the question of Erdős and Laskar, determining $f(n,m)$ asymptotically for all $m$ and exactly for $m \leq n^2/3+1$.

Given a graph $G$ and an integer $\ell \ge 2$ , we denote by $\alpha _{\ell }(G)$ the maximum size of a $K_{\ell }$ -free subset of vertices in $V(G)$ . A recent question of Nenadov and Pehova asks for determining the best possible minimum degree conditions forcing clique-factors in $n$ -vertex graphs $G$ with $\alpha _{\ell }(G) = o(n)$ , which can be seen as a Ramsey–Turán variant of the celebrated Hajnal–Szemerédi theorem. In this paper we find the asymptotical sharp minimum degree threshold for $K_r$ -factors in $n$ -vertex graphs $G$ with $\alpha _\ell (G)=n^{1-o(1)}$ for all $r\ge \ell \ge 2$ .

Given a sequence $\boldsymbol {k} := (k_1,\ldots ,k_s)$ of natural numbers and a graph G, let $F(G;\boldsymbol {k})$ denote the number of colourings of the edges of G with colours $1,\dots ,s$ , such that, for every $c \in \{1,\dots ,s\}$ , the edges of colour c contain no clique of order $k_c$ . Write $F(n;\boldsymbol {k})$ to denote the maximum of $F(G;\boldsymbol {k})$ over all graphs G on n vertices. This problem was first considered by Erdős and Rothschild in 1974, but it has been solved only for a very small number of nontrivial cases. In previous work with Pikhurko and Yilma, (Math. Proc. Cambridge Phil. Soc. 163 (2017), 341–356), we constructed a finite optimisation problem whose maximum is equal to the limit of $\log _2 F(n;\boldsymbol {k})/{n\choose 2}$ as n tends to infinity and proved a stability theorem for complete multipartite graphs G.

In this paper, we provide a sufficient condition on $\boldsymbol {k}$ which guarantees a general stability theorem for any graph G, describing the asymptotic structure of G on n vertices with $F(G;\boldsymbol {k}) = F(n;\boldsymbol {k}) \cdot 2^{o(n^2)}$ in terms of solutions to the optimisation problem. We apply our theorem to systematically recover existing stability results as well as all cases with $s=2$ . The proof uses a version of symmetrisation on edge-coloured weighted multigraphs.

Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs, the Zarankiewicz number $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $m$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph (such $G$ is called $\mathcal{F}$ -free). For $1\leq \beta \lt \alpha \lt 2$ , a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs is $(\alpha,\beta )$ -smooth if for some $\rho \gt 0$ and every $m\leq n$ , $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})=\rho m n^{\alpha -1}+O(n^\beta )$ . Motivated by their work on a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits on compactness and a classic result of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte proved that for any $(\alpha,\beta )$ -smooth family $\mathcal{F}$ , there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$ , any $n$ -vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup \{C_k\}$ -free graph with minimum degree at least $\rho (\frac{2n}{5}+o(n))^{\alpha -1}$ is bipartite. In this paper, we strengthen their result by showing that for every real $\delta \gt 0$ , there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$ , any $n$ -vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup \{C_k\}$ -free graph with minimum degree at least $\delta n^{\alpha -1}$ is bipartite. Furthermore, our result holds under a more relaxed notion of smoothness, which include the families $\mathcal{F}$ consisting of the single graph $K_{s,t}$ when $t\gg s$ . We also prove an analogous result for $C_{2\ell }$ -free graphs for every $\ell \geq 2$ , which complements a result of Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte.

A $(p,q)$ -colouring of a graph $G$ is an edge-colouring of $G$ which assigns at least $q$ colours to each $p$ -clique. The problem of determining the minimum number of colours, $f(n,p,q)$ , needed to give a $(p,q)$ -colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ is a natural generalization of the well-known problem of identifying the diagonal Ramsey numbers $r_k(p)$ . The best-known general upper bound on $f(n,p,q)$ was given by Erdős and Gyárfás in 1997 using a probabilistic argument. Since then, improved bounds in the cases where $p=q$ have been obtained only for $p\in \{4,5\}$ , each of which was proved by giving a deterministic construction which combined a $(p,p-1)$ -colouring using few colours with an algebraic colouring.

In this paper, we provide a framework for proving new upper bounds on $f(n,p,p)$ in the style of these earlier constructions. We characterize all colourings of $p$ -cliques with $p-1$ colours which can appear in our modified version of the $(p,p-1)$ -colouring of Conlon, Fox, Lee, and Sudakov. This allows us to greatly reduce the amount of case-checking required in identifying $(p,p)$ -colourings, which would otherwise make this problem intractable for large values of $p$ . In addition, we generalize our algebraic colouring from the $p=5$ setting and use this to give improved upper bounds on $f(n,6,6)$ and $f(n,8,8)$ .

A recent paper of Balogh, Li and Treglown [3] initiated the study of Dirac-type problems for ordered graphs. In this paper, we prove a number of results in this area. In particular, we determine asymptotically the minimum degree threshold for forcing

1. (i) a perfect H-tiling in an ordered graph, for any fixed ordered graph H of interval chromatic number at least $3$ ;

2. (ii) an H-tiling in an ordered graph G covering a fixed proportion of the vertices of G (for any fixed ordered graph H);

3. (iii) an H-cover in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph H).

The first two of these results resolve questions of Balogh, Li and Treglown, whilst (iii) resolves a question of Falgas-Ravry. Note that (i) combined with a result from [3] completely determines the asymptotic minimum degree threshold for forcing a perfect H-tiling. Additionally, we prove a result that, combined with a theorem of Balogh, Li and Treglown, asymptotically determines the minimum degree threshold for forcing an almost perfect H-tiling in an ordered graph (for any fixed ordered graph H). Our work therefore provides ordered graph analogues of the seminal tiling theorems of Kühn and Osthus [Combinatorica 2009] and of Komlós [Combinatorica 2000]. Each of our results exhibits some curious, and perhaps unexpected, behaviour. Our solution to (i) makes use of a novel absorbing argument.

For a graph G, let $f(G)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a bipartite subgraph of G. Given a positive integer m and a fixed graph H, let $f(m,H)$ denote the minimum possible cardinality of $f(G)$, as G ranges over all graphs on m edges that contain no copy of H. We prove bounds on $f(m,H)$ for some bipartite graphs H and give a bound for a conjecture of Alon et al. [‘MaxCut in H-free graphs’, Combin. Probab. Comput. 14 (2005), 629–647] concerning $f(m,K_{4,s})$.

We suggest two related conjectures dealing with the existence of spanning irregular subgraphs of graphs. The first asserts that any $d$ -regular graph on $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree between $0$ and $d$ deviates from $\frac{n}{d+1}$ by at most $2$ . The second is that every graph on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $\delta$ contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree does not exceed $\frac{n}{\delta +1}+2$ . Both conjectures remain open, but we prove several asymptotic relaxations for graphs with a large number of vertices $n$ . In particular we show that if $d^3 \log n \leq o(n)$ then every $d$ -regular graph with $n$ vertices contains a spanning subgraph in which the number of vertices of each degree between $0$ and $d$ is $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{d+1}$ . We also prove that any graph with $n$ vertices and minimum degree $\delta$ contains a spanning subgraph in which no degree is repeated more than $(1+o(1))\frac{n}{\delta +1}+2$ times.

In 1999, Jacobson and Lehel conjectured that, for $k \geq 3$ , every k-regular Hamiltonian graph has cycles of $\Theta (n)$ many different lengths. This was further strengthened by Verstraëte, who asked whether the regularity can be replaced with the weaker condition that the minimum degree is at least $3$ . Despite attention from various researchers, until now, the best partial result towards both of these conjectures was a $\sqrt {n}$ lower bound on the number of cycle lengths. We resolve these conjectures asymptotically by showing that the number of cycle lengths is at least $n^{1-o(1)}$ .

Given a graph $H$ and a positive integer $n$ , the Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H)$ is the maximum number of edges in an $n$ -vertex graph that does not contain $H$ as a subgraph. A real number $r\in (1,2)$ is called a Turán exponent if there exists a bipartite graph $H$ such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H)=\Theta (n^r)$ . A long-standing conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits states that $1+\frac{p}{q}$ is a Turán exponent for all positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $q\gt p$ .

In this paper, we show that $1+\frac{p}{q}$ is a Turán exponent for all positive integers $p$ and $q$ with $q \gt p^{2}$ . Our result also addresses a conjecture of Janzer [18].

We study the problem of finding pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles in the randomly perturbed graph model, which is the union of any $n$ -vertex graph $G$ satisfying a given minimum degree condition and the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ . We prove that asymptotically almost surely $G \cup G(n,p)$ contains at least $\min \{\delta (G), \lfloor n/3 \rfloor \}$ pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles, provided $p \ge C \log n/n$ , where $C$ is a large enough constant. This is a perturbed version of an old result of Dirac.

Our result is asymptotically optimal and answers a question of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021, no. 3, 480–516] in a strong form. We also prove a stability version of our result, which in the case of pairwise vertex-disjoint triangles extends a result of Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021, no. 3, 480–516]. Together with a result of Balogh, Treglown, and Wagner [CPC, 2019, no. 2, 159–176], this fully resolves the existence of triangle factors in randomly perturbed graphs.

We believe that the methods introduced in this paper are useful for a variety of related problems: we discuss possible generalisations to clique factors, cycle factors, and $2$ -universality.

In 1975 Bollobás, Erdős, and Szemerédi asked the following question: given positive integers $n, t, r$ with $2\le t\le r-1$ , what is the largest minimum degree $\delta (G)$ among all $r$ -partite graphs $G$ with parts of size $n$ and which do not contain a copy of $K_{t+1}$ ? The $r=t+1$ case has attracted a lot of attention and was fully resolved by Haxell and Szabó, and Szabó and Tardos in 2006. In this article, we investigate the $r\gt t+1$ case of the problem, which has remained dormant for over 40 years. We resolve the problem exactly in the case when $r \equiv -1 \pmod{t}$ , and up to an additive constant for many other cases, including when $r \geq (3t-1)(t-1)$ . Our approach utilizes a connection to the related problem of determining the maximum of the minimum degrees among the family of balanced $r$ -partite $rn$ -vertex graphs of chromatic number at most $t$ .

For a subgraph $G$ of the blow-up of a graph $F$ , we let $\delta ^*(G)$ be the smallest minimum degree over all of the bipartite subgraphs of $G$ induced by pairs of parts that correspond to edges of $F$ . Johansson proved that if $G$ is a spanning subgraph of the blow-up of $C_3$ with parts of size $n$ and $\delta ^*(G) \ge \frac{2}{3}n + \sqrt{n}$ , then $G$ contains $n$ vertex disjoint triangles, and presented the following conjecture of Häggkvist. If $G$ is a spanning subgraph of the blow-up of $C_k$ with parts of size $n$ and $\delta ^*(G) \ge \left(1 + \frac 1k\right)\frac n2 + 1$ , then $G$ contains $n$ vertex disjoint copies of $C_k$ such that each $C_k$ intersects each of the $k$ parts exactly once. A similar conjecture was also made by Fischer and the case $k=3$ was proved for large $n$ by Magyar and Martin.

In this paper, we prove the conjecture of Häggkvist asymptotically. We also pose a conjecture which generalises this result by allowing the minimum degree conditions in each bipartite subgraph induced by pairs of parts of $G$ to vary. We support this new conjecture by proving the triangle case. This result generalises Johannson’s result asymptotically.

A graph $H$ is common if the number of monochromatic copies of $H$ in a 2-edge-colouring of the complete graph $K_n$ is asymptotically minimised by the random colouring. Burr and Rosta, extending a famous conjecture of Erdős, conjectured that every graph is common. The conjectures of Erdős and of Burr and Rosta were disproved by Thomason and by Sidorenko, respectively, in the late 1980s. Collecting new examples of common graphs had not seen much progress since then, although very recently a few more graphs were verified to be common by the flag algebra method or the recent progress on Sidorenko’s conjecture. Our contribution here is to provide several new classes of tripartite common graphs. The first example is the class of so-called triangle trees, which generalises two theorems by Sidorenko and answers a question of Jagger, Šťovíček, and Thomason from 1996. We also prove that, somewhat surprisingly, given any tree $T$ , there exists a triangle tree such that the graph obtained by adding $T$ as a pendant tree is still common. Furthermore, we show that adding arbitrarily many apex vertices to any connected bipartite graph on at most $5$ vertices yields a common graph.
