The low-frequency modal and non-modal linear dynamics of an incompressible, pressure-gradient-induced turbulent separation bubble (TSB) are investigated, with the objective of studying the mechanism responsible for the low-frequency contraction and expansion (breathing) commonly observed in experimental studies. The configuration of interest is a TSB generated on a flat test surface by a succession of adverse and favourable pressure gradients. The base flow selected for the analysis is the average TSB from the direct numerical simulation of Coleman et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 847, 2018, pp. 28–70). Global mode analysis reveals that the eigenmodes of the linear operator are damped for all frequencies and wavenumbers. Furthermore, the least damped eigenmode appears to occur at zero frequency and low, non-zero spanwise wavenumber when scaled with the separation length. Resolvent analysis is then employed to examine the forced dynamics of the flow. At low frequency, a region of low, non-zero spanwise wavenumber is also discernible, where the receptivity appears to be driven by the identified weakly damped global mode. The corresponding optimal energy gain is shown to have the shape of a first-order, low-pass filter with a cut-off frequency consistent with the low-frequency unsteadiness in TSBs. The results from resolvent analysis are compared to the unsteady experimental database of Le Floc'h et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 902, 2020, A13) in a similar TSB flow. The alignment between the optimal response and the first spectral proper orthogonal decomposition mode computed from the experiments is shown to be close to $95\,\%$, while the spanwise wavenumber of the optimal response is consistent with that of the low-frequency breathing motion captured experimentally. This indicates that the fluctuations observed experimentally at low frequency closely match the response computed from resolvent analysis. Based on these results, we propose that the forced dynamics of the flow, driven by the weakly damped global mode, serve as a plausible mechanism for the origin of the low-frequency breathing motion commonly observed in experimental studies of TSBs.

The unsteady mechanism of unstart flow for an inlet with rectangular-to-elliptical shape transition (REST) under the off-design condition at a Mach of 4 is investigated using the delay detached eddy simulation method. With the help of numerical simulations, the unsteady dynamics, especially the low-frequency characteristics of the REST inlet unstart flow, as well as the self-sustaining mechanism, is investigated. The instantaneous flow illustrates the unsteady phenomena of the REST unstart flow, including the interaction between the cowl-closure leading edge (CLE) shock and the shear layer, breathing of the separation bubble, flapping of the separation shock, instability of the shear layer and vortex shedding along the shear layer. The spectral analysis reveals that the lower frequency dynamics is associated with the breathing of the separation bubble and the flapping motion of the separation shock wave, while the higher frequency is related to the instability of the shear layer affected by cowl-closure leading edge shock and the formation of shedding vortices. Further, coherence analysis shows that the contribution of these flow structures dominating the low-frequency dynamics couple with each other. Based on the dynamic mode decomposition results, the characteristics that contribute to the unsteady behaviour of unstart flow are summarized. The streamwise vortices downstream of the separation and the shedding vortices are believed to be the main driving force of the global low-frequency unsteadiness of the REST inlet unstart flow under the off-design condition. Moreover, the CLE shock plays an important role in the process during the dominant flow structure conversion from the backflow within the separation bubble into elongated streamwise structures.

We investigate Reynolds number effects in strong shock-wave/turbulent boundary-layer interactions (STBLI) by leveraging a new database of wall-resolved and long-integrated large-eddy simulations. The database encompasses STBLI with massive boundary-layer separation at Mach $2.0$, impinging-shock angle $40^{\circ }$ and friction Reynolds numbers ${\textit {Re}}_\tau$ $355$, $1226$ and $5118$. Our analysis shows that the shape of the reverse-flow bubble is notably different at low and high Reynolds number, while the mean-flow separation length, separation-shock angle and incipient plateau pressure are rather insensitive to Reynolds number variations. Velocity statistics reveal a shift in the peak location of the streamwise Reynolds stress from the separation-shock foot to the core of the detached shear layer at high Reynolds number, which we attribute to increased pressure transport in the separation-shock excursion domain. Additionally, in the high Reynolds case, the separation shock originates deep within the turbulent boundary, resulting in intensified wall-pressure fluctuations and spanwise variations associated with the passage of coherent velocity structures. Temporal spectra of various signals show energetic low-frequency content in all cases, along with a distinct peak in the bubble-volume spectra at a separation-length-based Strouhal number $St_{L_{sep}}\approx 0.1$. The separation shock is also found to lag behind bubble-volume variations, consistent with the acoustic propagation time from reattachment to separation and a downstream mechanism driving the shock motion. Finally, dynamic mode decomposition of three-dimensional fields suggests a Reynolds-independent statistical link among separation-shock excursions, velocity streaks and large-scale vortices at low frequencies.

Turbulent boundary layers (TBLs) over surface perturbations like bumps with roughness – notably altering heat and mass transfer, drag, etc. – are prevalent in nature (mountains, dunes, etc.) and technology. We study a channel flow with a transverse bump on one wall superimposed with small-scale longitudinal grooves via direct numerical simulation (DNS) of incompressible flow. Turbulence statistics and dynamics are compared between grooved wall (GW) and smooth wall (SW) bumps. Streamwise spinning jets emanating from the crests’ corners alter the flow structure within the separation bubble (SB), extending the SB length by 30 % over that for SW, and have lingering effects far downstream. Grooves decrease skin friction but increase the bump's form drag by 25 %. In GW, the peaks of turbulence intensity and production decrease by 20 % and shift downstream, compared with SW. Three regions of negative production, found upstream as well as downstream of the bump, are explained in terms of two separate mechanisms: normal and shear productions. Separation upstream of the bump occurs always for GW, but intermittently for SW. Within the downstream SB, counter-rotating minibubbles form intermittently for SW but always for GW. Interestingly, a minibubble causes streamwise vorticity reversal of the upstream moving secondary flow around each crest corner. The wall pressure in GW is invariant in the spanwise direction and is explained in terms of its non-local nature and its connection with outer structures. The grooved bump unearths rich TBL flow physics – upstream separation, dynamics of the downstream minibubble, altered reattachment dynamics and negative production.

Cowl-induced incident shock wave/boundary layer interactions (ISWBLIs) under the influence of shoulder expansion represent one of the dominant phenomena in supersonic inlets. To provide a more comprehensive understanding of how an expansion corner affects the ISWBLI, a detailed experimental and analytical study is performed in a Mach 2.73 flow in this work. Pressure measurement, schlieren photography and surface oil-flow visualisation are used to record flow features, including the pressure distribution, separation extent and surface-flow topological structures. Our results reveal three types of ISWBLIs influenced by the expansion corner. When the shock intensity is weak, the separation is small scale with the expansion waves emanating from the expansion corner. This is the first type of expansion-corner-affected ISWBLI (EC-ISWBLI). When the incident shock wave is strong, large-scale separation occurs, accompanied by the disappearance of expansion waves, forming the second type of EC-SWBLI. The expansion corner induces a ‘lock-in’ effect in which the separation onset is consistently locked near the expansion corner regardless of the incident shock intensity and impingement position. The third type of EC-ISWBLI occurs when the shock is sufficiently strong and the impingement point is close to the expansion corner. In this interaction, the ‘lock-in’ effect ceases to manifest. Moreover, a shock polar-incorporating inviscid model is employed to elucidate the shock patterns. Two criteria are established by combining free interaction theory with this model. The first criterion provides valuable insights into the evolution of separations with a minimal overall pressure rise and the second criterion determines the threshold for the occurrence of the ‘lock-in’ effect.

Three-dimensional effects of sidewalls on the low-frequency unsteadiness of the shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) are of academic and practical importance but not yet well understood. Considerable attention has been paid to the viscous effect of sidewalls, whereas the potential inviscid confinement effect of sidewalls has received little attention. The present work provides experimental evidence of multiscale spanwise travelling waves crossing the separation front under the confinement of sidewalls. Global pressure measurements were made for a sidewall-confined 24$^\circ$ compression ramp interaction in Mach-2.83 flow using fast-responding pressure-sensitive paint. The unsteady pressure in a statistically two-dimensional intermittent region suggests that in addition to the canonical streamwise oscillation, the separation front exhibits significant low-frequency, multiscale spanwise distortion. Modal analysis further reveals that multiscale spanwise unsteadiness has higher intensity and frequency than the streamwise oscillation. Such strong spanwise unsteadiness calls attention to the low-frequency unsteadiness in previous sidewall-confined SBLI experiments and encourages further study on the mechanism of the confinement effect.

The transient processes of laminar separation bubble (LSB) formation and bursting on a rectangular NACA 0018 wing are studied experimentally. A two-dimensional airfoil model is used as a baseline for the assessment of finite wing effects. The models are subjected to ramp changes in free-stream velocity causing the flow to switch between a state where an LSB forms and a state without reattachment. Lift force and particle image velocimetry measurements are used to relate the flow development to the aerodynamic loading. The lift coefficient of the airfoil exhibits substantial hysteresis, and the duration of the lift transients range from $10$ to $22$ convective time scales for bubble formation and $22$ to $30$ convective time scales for bursting. In contrast, the transient lift coefficients of the wing change gradually, with less hysteresis. The wing tip causes greater three-dimensionality in the separation bubble, whose thickness increases near the midspan where bursting is initiated. During bubble formation, the region of separated flow contracts towards the midspan. The gradual change in lift of the wing is linked to slower spanwise expansion and contraction of the separated flow region relative to the airfoil. On both models, the wavenumbers and amplitudes of disturbances in the separated shear layer rapidly change when reattachment initiates or ceases. Applying the bursting criterion of Gaster (Tech. Rep. Reports and Memoranda 3595. Aeronautical Research Council, London, 1967) to the bubble on the wing shows that bursting of the bubble at a single spanwise location is insufficient to cause complete spanwise failure of reattachment, and that the relationship between bursting parameters depends on spanwise position.

Thin airfoil dynamic stall at moderate Reynolds numbers is typically linked to the sudden bursting of a small laminar separation bubble close to the leading edge. Given the strong sensitivity of laminar separation bubbles to external disturbances, the onset of dynamic stall on a NACA0009 airfoil section subject to different levels of low-amplitude free stream disturbances is investigated using direct numerical simulations. The flow is practically indistinguishable from clean inflow simulations in the literature for turbulence intensities at the leading edge of ${Tu} = 0.02\,\%$. At slightly higher turbulence intensities of ${Tu} = 0.05\,\%$, the bursting process is found to be considerably less smooth and strong coherent vortex shedding from the laminar separation bubble is observed prior to the formation of the dynamic stall vortex (DSV). This phenomenon is considered in more detail by analysing its appearance in an ensemble of simulations comprising statistically independent realisations of the flow, thus proving its statistical relevance. In order to extract the transient dynamics of the vortex shedding, the classical proper orthogonal decomposition method is generalised to include time in the energy measure and applied to the time-resolved simulation data of incipient dynamic stall. Using this technique, the dominant transient spatiotemporally correlated features are distilled and the wave train of the vortex shedding prior to the emergence of the main DSV is reconstructed from the flow data exhibiting dynamics of large-scale coherent growth and decay within the turbulent boundary layer.

This experimental work explores the flow field around a three-dimensional expansion–compression geometry on a slender cone at Mach 8 using high-frequency pressure sensors, high-frame-rate schlieren, temperature-sensitive paint, shear-stress measurements and oil-flow visualizations. The $7^\circ$ cone geometry has a hyperbolic slice which acts as an expansion corner and suppresses the disturbances present in the upstream boundary layer. Downstream of the cone-slice corner, high-frequency boundary-layer disturbances attenuate in all cases. Under laminar conditions, second-mode instabilities from the cone diminish and lower-frequency second-mode waves develop on the slice at a frequency commensurate with the increased boundary layer thickness. For fully turbulent cases, the boundary layer over the slice shows evidence of a two-layered nature with a turbulent outer region and a near-wall region with strong attenuation of high-frequency disturbances and reappearance of lower-frequency instability waves. When a downstream compression ramp is added to the slice, the expanded boundary layer shows enhanced susceptibility to separation such that separation is observed at a $10^{\circ }$ deflection, which is smaller than expected for turbulent conditions. For a $30^{\circ }$ ramp, boundary-layer separation occurs further upstream where the heat flux contours show a decrease in heating that is characteristic of a transitional separation. These results demonstrate the effect of relaminarization caused by an upstream expansion on a subsequent shock-wave/boundary-layer interaction.

Transitional separating flow induced by a rectangular plate subjected to uniform incoming flow at Reynolds number (based on the incoming velocity and half plate height) 2000 is investigated using direct numerical simulation. The objective is to unveil the long-lasting mystery of low-frequency flapping motion (FM) in flow separation. At a fixed streamwise-vertical plane or from the perspective of previous experimental studies using pointwise or planar measurements, FM manifests as a low-frequency periodic switching between low and high velocities covering the entire separation bubble. The results indicate that in three-dimensional space, FM reflects an intricate evolution of streamwise elongated streaky structures under the influence of separated shear layer and mean flow reversal. The FM is an absolute instability, and is initiated through a lift-up mechanism boosted by mean flow deceleration near the crest of the separating streamline. At this particular location, the shear bends the vortex filament abruptly, so that one end is vertically struck into the first half of the separation bubble, whereas the other end is extended in the streamwise direction in the second half of the separation bubble. These two ends of vortex filament are mutually sustained and also stretched by the vertical acceleration and streamwise acceleration in the first and second halves of the separation bubble, respectively. This process periodically switches the low-velocity (or high-velocity) streaky structure to a high-velocity (or low-velocity) streaky structure encompassing the entire separation bubble, and thus flaps the separated shear layer up and down in the vertical direction. A ‘large vortex’ shedding manifests when the streaky structure switches signs. This large vortex is fundamentally different from the spanwise vortex shedding residing in the shear layer originated from the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and successive vortex amalgamation. It is also believed that the three-dimensional evolution of streaky structures in the form of FM is applicable for both geometry- and pressure-induced separating flows.

A new model of the steady boundary layer flow around a rotating sphere is developed that includes the widely observed collision and subsequent eruption of boundary layers at the equator. This is derived following the Segalini & Garrett (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 818, 2017, pp. 288–318) asymptotic approach for large Reynolds numbers but replacing the Smith & Duck (Q. J. Mech. Appl. Maths, vol. 30, issue 2, 1977, pp. 143–156) correction with a higher-order version of the Stewartson (Grenzschichtforschung/Boundary Layer Research, 1958, pp. 59–71. Springer) model of the equatorial flow. The Stewartson model is then numerically solved, for the first time, via a geometric multigrid method that solves the steady planar Navier–Stokes equations in streamfunction-vorticity form on large rectangular domains in a quick and efficient manner. The results are then compared with a direct numerical simulation of the full unsteady problem using the Semtex software package where it is found that there is broad qualitative agreement, namely the separation and reattachment of the boundary layer at the equator. However, the presence of unobserved behaviour such as a large area of reverse flow seen at lower Reynolds numbers than those observed in other studies, and that the absolute error increases with Reynolds number suggest the model needs improvement to better capture the physical dynamics.

Analytical investigations of heat transfer during the vertical impingement of an unsubmerged axisymmetric liquid jet on a horizontal plate have been limited to the regions ahead of the jump. This limitation is due to the complex flow physics in the jump region arising from sudden changes in the flow field. This is addressed in here by extending the averaging theory (AT) introduced by Bohr et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett., vol. 79, issue 6, 1997, pp. 1038–1041) which was further developed by Watanabe et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 480, 2003, pp. 233–265), to describe the heat transfer problem in circular hydraulic jumps including separation. The applicability of the resulting theory to determine the temperature field in the jump region is evaluated using the data available in the literature and also by means of fully resolved numerical solutions. Good agreement is observed for moderate Prandtl numbers. However, for sufficiently high Prandtl numbers, deviations become notable. The reasons for the deviations according to their relevance are (i) monotonically decreasing temperature profile inherent to the AT, whereas the fully resolved numerical solutions exhibit a local maximum in the temperature profile away from the plate; and (ii) inapplicability of the concept of dividing the flow field into a region affected and a region unaffected by heat transfer according to the thermal boundary layer thickness. This concept leads to the overestimation of the temperature close to the wall and to the existence of a threshold Prandtl number, for which the thermal boundary layer thickness does not meet the free surface anymore. Around this threshold Prandtl number, the temperature field shows a discontinuous behaviour.

This work investigates the statistical response of short and long laminar separation bubbles to external flow parameters, such as Reynolds number, free-stream turbulence intensity and streamwise pressure gradient, known to govern bubble formation and characteristics. A parametric experimental campaign has been performed using particle image velocimetry on a flat plate to provide a comprehensive database for the characterization of separation-induced transition in both short and long separation bubbles. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) was applied to the data set of all dividing streamlines commonly used to identify a laminar separation bubble. This provides an optimal state-space basis for the data-driven classification of the state of a laminar separation bubble, with the leading modes capturing the change in length and height of the laminar separation bubble in response to changes in the flow parameters. When projected onto the POD subspace constituted by the first three leading modes, the normalized data from the present study and the results from prior investigations not used in the modal analysis collapse on the same trajectory in the low-dimensional space. The present POD basis can be therefore adopted for the description of the general response of the time-mean shape of a laminar separation bubble to changes in the main influencing parameters. A well-defined pattern was observed in the case of short laminar separation bubbles in the reduced-order space defined by the first three POD coefficients, whereas a higher dispersion in the long-bubble regime indicates an increased sensitivity of long bubbles to the external flow characteristics.

Supersonic flow over a hollow cylinder/flare with a free-stream Mach number of 2.25 is numerically investigated in this study. Axisymmetric computational fluid dynamics simulations and global stability analysis (GSA) are performed for a wide range of cylinder radii and flare deflection angles. The onset of incipient and secondary separation is delayed as the cylinder radius is decreased due to the axisymmetric effects. The GSA reveals that a decrease in cylinder radius also postpones the emergence of global instability. The GSA results agree well with the results of direct numerical simulations for a supercritical case in the linear stage. The saturated flow exhibits pairs of unsteady streamwise streaks downstream of reattachment. The criterion of the global stability boundary established for supersonic flow over a compression corner (Hao et al., J. Fluid Mech, vol. 919, 2021, A4) is extended to its axisymmetric counterpart.

Following our previous work on periodic ray paths (He et al., J. Fluid Mech., vol. 939, 2022, A3), we study asymptotically and numerically the structure of internal shear layers for very small Ekman numbers in a three-dimensional spherical shell and in a two-dimensional cylindrical annulus when the rays converge towards an attractor. We first show that the asymptotic solution obtained by propagating the self-similar solution generated at the critical latitude on the librating inner core describes the main features of the numerical solution. The internal shear layer structure and the scaling for its width and velocity amplitude in $E^{1/3}$ and $E^{1/12}$, respectively, are recovered. The amplitude of the asymptotic solution is shown to decrease to $E^{1/6}$ when it reaches the attractor, as is also observed numerically. However, some discrepancies are observed close to the particular attractors along which the phase of the wave beam remains constant. Another asymptotic solution close to those attractors is then constructed using the model of Ogilvie (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 543, 2005, pp. 19–44). The solution obtained for the velocity has an $O(E^{1/6})$ amplitude, but a self-similar structure different from the critical-latitude solution. It also depends on the Ekman pumping at the contact points of the attractor with the boundaries. We demonstrate that it reproduces correctly the numerical solution. Surprisingly, the numerical solution close to an attractor with phase shift (that is, an attractor touching the axis in three or two dimensions with a symmetric forcing) is also found to be $O(E^{1/6})$, but its amplitude is much weaker. However, its asymptotic structure remains a mystery.

The large-eddy simulation technique was used to investigate the dynamics of unsteady flow separation on a flat-plate turbulent boundary layer. The unsteadiness was generated by imposing an oscillating, wall-normal velocity profile at the top of the computational domain, and a range of reduced frequencies ($k$), from a very rapid flutter-like motion to a slow quasi-steady oscillation, was studied. Ambrogi et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 945, 2022, A10) showed that the reduced frequency greatly affects the transient separation process, and at a frequency $k=1$, the separation region became unstable and was advected periodically out of the domain. In this paper, we discuss the causes of the observed advection process and the effects of the unsteadiness on the second moments. The time evolution of turbulent kinetic energy, for instance, reveals that an advection-like phenomenon is also present at a very low reduced frequency, but its dynamic behaviour is completely different from that of the intermediate frequency ($k=1$). At the intermediate frequency the entire recirculation region is advected downstream, keeping its shape. The advected structure is rotational in nature, and moves at constant speed. In contrast, in the low-frequency case the advected fluid originates at the reattachment point, and the structure is shear-dominated. Particle pathlines reflect the fact that the flow at the low frequency is quasi-steady-state, but show peculiar differences at the intermediate frequency, in which the flow response to the freestream forcing depends on the particle positions in the wall-normal direction.

Separation induced by impinging shock is a fundamental feature in supersonic and hypersonic flows; however, it is difficult to predict the pressure plateau due to a limited theoretical understanding of the effect of impinging shock strength. In this study, the evolution of the separation configuration and pressure distribution with changes in impinging shock angle is examined, and a theoretical equation for predicting the pressure plateau based on minimum entropy production is proposed. For validation, an experimental device that can measure wall pressure in the separation region at high spatiotemporal resolution is developed, and schlieren visualization is employed to capture the flow structure. Accordingly, the fine characteristics of pressure distributions along the centreline of the separation region as well as the reattachment region induced by shock impingement at various angles ($8.5^\circ$ to $30.5^\circ$) are obtained in a flow of Mach number 5 and Reynolds number ${\approx }1.4\times 10^7\ {\rm m}^{-1}$. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical results; both indicate that the pressure distribution is strongly related to the impinging shock strength and that there is a critical flow deflection angle $\alpha ^\ast$ (${\approx }20.8^\circ$ for Mach 5). The pressure in the separation region grows nearly linearly with increasing impinging shock strength when the flow deflection angle of the impinging shock is less than $\alpha ^\ast$; the pressure stops growing and resides in a small range when the flow deflection angle is larger than $\alpha ^\ast$. Therefore, the impinging shock strength should be considered a main factor when predicting the pressure plateau.

We develop a frame-invariant theory of material spike formation during flow separation over a no-slip boundary in three-dimensional flows with arbitrary time dependence. Based on the exact evolution of the largest principal curvature on near-wall material surfaces, our theory identifies fixed and moving separation. Our approach is effective over short time intervals and admits an instantaneous limit. As a byproduct, we derive explicit formulas for the evolution of the Weingarten map and the principal curvatures of any surface advected by general three-dimensional flows. The material backbone we identify acts first as a precursor and later as the centrepiece of Lagrangian flow separation. We discover previously undetected spiking points and curves where the separation backbones connect to the boundary and provide wall-based analytical formulas for their locations. We illustrate our results on several steady and unsteady flows.

Instability measurements of an axisymmetric, laminar separation bubble were made over a sharp cone-cylinder-flare with a $12^{\circ }$ flare angle under hypersonic quiet flow. Two distinct instabilities were identified: Mack's second mode (which peaked between 190 and 290 kHz) and the shear-layer instability in the same frequency band as Mack's first mode (observed between 50 and 150 kHz). Both instabilities were measured with surface pressure sensors and were captured with high-speed schlieren. Linear stability analysis results agreed well with these measured instabilities in terms of both peak frequencies and amplification rates. Lower-frequency fluctuations were also noted in the schlieren data. Bicoherence analysis revealed nonlinear phase-locking between the shear-layer and second-mode instabilities. For the first time in axisymmetric, low-disturbance flow, naturally generated intermittent turbulent spots were observed in the reattached boundary layer. These spots appeared to evolve from shear-layer-instability wave packets convecting downstream. This work presents novel experimental evidence of the hypersonic shear-layer instability contributing directly to transition onset for an axisymmetric model.

We investigate the streamwise vorticity generation mechanism and distribution pattern in an unbounded steady inertial flow past a fixed Platonic polyhedron. Three angular positions are selected: an edge facing the flow (E), a face facing the flow (F) and a vertex facing the flow (V). We provide compelling evidence that the generation of the streamwise vorticity is primarily caused by the tilting of the transverse vorticity that originates from the particle front surface. Each inclined face on the front surface generates a pair of opposite-signed streamwise vortices. They are advected to the particle wake and form a chiral vorticity pattern which preserves the symmetry of the particle front surface. Two particles at dual angular positions exhibit highly similar vorticity patterns. Our study reveals a striking similarity between the vorticity patterns and the far-field optics diffraction pattern of a light beam past a polygonal aperture. We discover the deterministic vorticity generation mechanism to predict the streamwise vorticity patterns based on the distribution of edges and inclined faces on the particle front surface.
