A simplified configuration was developed to facilitate the mode transition process within an over-under Turbine-Based Combined Cycle (TBCC) inlet. Leveraging dynamic mesh technology, an unsteady numerical simulation of the mode transition was conducted, emphasising the flow characteristics of the mode transition and the impact of key similarity criteria numbers. The findings indicate that at an incoming Mach number of 2.0, the mode transition is paired with a continuous alteration in the capture mass flow of the high-speed duct. This continual change instigates the inlet unstarting, with subsequent flow characteristics being contingent on the historical effect, exhibiting a degree of hysteresis characteristics. When the scale effect is considered, it is observed that a larger model scale results in higher Reynolds (Re) and Strouhal (St) numbers. This directly contributes to a notable delay in the unstart moment, a decrease in the unstart interval, and an enlargement of the hysteresis loop. An examination of control variables reveals that the Re number marginally influences mode transition characteristics, while the St number’s effect constitutes approximately 90% of the scale effect. This conclusively demonstrates that the St number is the predominant similarity criterion number in the mode transition process.

To optimize flapping foil performance, in the current study we apply deep reinforcement learning (DRL) to plan foil non-parametric motion, as the traditional control techniques and simplified motions cannot fully model nonlinear, unsteady and high-dimensional foil–vortex interactions. Therefore, a DRL training framework is proposed based on the proximal policy optimization algorithm and the transformer architecture, where the policy is initialized from the sinusoidal expert display. We first demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed DRL-training framework, learning the coherent foil flapping motion to generate thrust. Furthermore, by adjusting reward functions and action thresholds, DRL-optimized foil trajectories can gain significant enhancement in both thrust and efficiency compared with the sinusoidal motion. Last, through visualization of wake morphology and instantaneous pressure distributions, it is found that DRL-optimized foil can adaptively adjust the phases between motion and shedding vortices to improve hydrodynamic performance. Our results give a hint of how to solve complex fluid manipulation problems using the DRL method.

In this paper, we investigate the constrained attitude control problem of hypersonic vehicles (HVs). An improved prescribed performance dynamic surface control method is proposed based on an adaptive scaling strategy. Because of the uncertain time-varying disturbances, the controlled state may violate the constraint in the prescribed performance control (PPC) framework. An adaptive scaling strategy is introduced in the PPC method to avoid state violation. The performance function is scaled with respect to the state adaptively. Moreover, a nonlinear disturbance observer is used to compensate the sum of external and other internal disturbances of the system. The proposed method improves the system dynamic performance while ensuring the system robustness. Furthermore, the stability of the closed-loop system is proved by Lyapunov analysis. Finally, numerical simulations are implemented to verify the effectiveness of the PPC method and superiority over other methods.

China has been the world's largest producer of eggs for the last 30 years. There have been considerable recent changes in the structure of the egg industry due to rapid economic growth, improved supply chains and favourable prices. Since 2012, revenue from poultry has increased by 8.7% on average. Annual growth rate of egg production has been approximately 0.6 million tonnes per year from 2000 to 2016 (FAO, 2017), and 2016 saw the total eggs produced reaching a peak of 31 million tonnes. Egg production in China continues to provide the population with a significant proportion of their intake of high quality dietary protein. Egg consumption is expected to continue to increase with the rise in the urban population. It is probable that the highest increase in demand for eggs will be for ‘out of home’ consumption and in processed food products. These levels of production are associated with the spread of intensive systems. The poultry sector is no longer dominated by hundreds of millions of smallholders keeping birds as a side-line activity and many small farmers have ceased production. Chinese consumers are becoming more focused on the quality and safety of eggs. Future developments in the egg production are expected to concentrate on quality, safety and traceability of eggs.

A new plant nematode species, Trophurus wuhuensis n. sp., was collected from the soil associated with Cinnamomum camphora in Wuhu, Anhui Province, China. The new species is characterized by having a female with a slender body 660.5–801.5 μm in length, stylet 12–14 μm long, knobs directed laterad, lateral field marked by short and scattered grooves, post-vulval uterine sac shorter than vulval body diameter, post-rectal intestinal sac absent, tail cylindroid, terminus with deep wrinkles; and male with a pointed tail terminus and spicules 16–18 μm long. The internal transcribed spacer sequences of ribosomal DNA (ITS rDNA) and partial 18S ribosomal DNA (18S rDNA) from T. wuhuensis n. sp. were amplified and sequenced. A phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of 18S rDNA fragments is given in this study.

Phenol, also known as carbolic acid or phenic acid, is a priority pollutant in aquatic ecosystems. The present study has investigated metabolic activities and transcription profiles of cytochrome P450 enzymes in Chironomus kiinensis under phenol stress. Exposure of C. kiinensis larvae to three sublethal doses of phenol (1, 10 and 100 µM) inhibited cytochrome P450 enzyme activity during the 96 h exposure period. The P450 activity measured after the 24 h exposure to phenol stress could be used to assess the level (low or high) of phenol contamination in the environment. To investigate the potential of cytochrome P450 genes as molecular biomarkers to monitor phenol contamination, the cDNA of ten CYP6 genes from the transcriptome of C. kiinensis were identified and sequenced. The open reading frames of the CYP6 genes ranged from 1266 to 1587 bp, encoding deduced polypeptides composed of between 421 and 528 amino acids, with predicted molecular masses from 49.01 to 61.94 kDa and isoelectric points (PI) from 6.01 to 8.89. Among the CYP6 genes, the mRNA expression levels of the CYP6EW3, CYP6EV9, CYP6FV1 and CYP6FV2 genes significantly altered in response to phenol exposure; therefore, these genes could potentially serve as biomarkers in the environment. This study shows that P450 activity combined with one or multiple CYP6 genes could be used to monitor phenol pollution.

Electron plasma waves excited and/or modified by finite objects such as laser and charged particle pulses are investigated nonperturbatively using a simple model where the driver is unaffected by the interaction. It is shown that smooth as well as sharply peaked electron plasma wake waves of large amplitude can exist. In particular, two charged pulses moving in tandem can excite a highly localized electron plasma wave without producing the expected long wake wave, a configuration that should be particularly useful for efficient trapping and acceleration of electrons to high energies.

The effects of laser incidence angle on lateral fast electron transport at front target surface, when a plasma is preformed, irradiated by intense (>1018 W/cm2) laser pulses, are studied by Kα imaging technique and electron spectrometer. A horizontally asymmetric Kα halo, resulting from directional lateral electron transport and energy deposition, is observed for a large incidence angle (70°). Moreover, a group of MeV high energy electrons is emitted along target surface. It is believed that the deformed preplasma and the asymmetrical distribution of self-generated magnetic field, at large incidence angle, play an important role in the directional lateral electron transport.

A high-conductivity and super-high-strength alloy, Cu-8.0Ni-1.8Si-0.6Sn-0.15Mg, has been developed. The processing conditions of the alloy have been investigated. The evolution of microstructure of the alloy on aging has been examined by transmission electron microscopy. The processing condition giving the highest hardness and good electrical conductivity is as follows: solution treatment at 970 °C for 4 h, cold rolling to 60% reduction, and aging at 500 °C for 30 min. The processed alloy has an average tensile strength of 1180 MPa, 0.2% proof strength of 795 MPa, elongation of 2.75%, and average electrical conductivity of 26.5% IACS. Orthorhombic Ni2Si precipitates are responsible for the age-hardening effect. The orientation relationship between the precipitates and the matrix is (110)m(211)p and. DO22 ordering together with spinodal decomposition also contributed to the hardening.

The influence of prior cold deformation on precipitating of alpha phase as well as the variation of hardness during aging has been investigated in solution-treated Ti-10Mo-8V-1Fe-3.5Al alloys. The results show that alpha phase precipitation could be obviously accelerated by the prior cold deformation. In the predeformed samples, a network pattern structure was observed with an optical microscope after aging treatment. It could be attributed to the phenomenon that the plate-shape alpha precipitates prefer to nucleate and grow in the regions with a high density of dislocations, especially inside slip bands. The hardness of both the predeformed and undeformed TB3 specimens after different aging times was measured and further predicted by a proposed strengthening model based on the grain refinement mechanism of the beta phase. The predicted results are consistent with the experimental results, especially in the later aging stages.

A modified heat treatment process designated quenching–partitioning–tempering (Q–P–T) process is developed based on the quenching and partitioning process proposed by J.G. Speer et al. [Acta Mater.51, 2611 (2003)] and D.K. Matlock et al. [Mater. Sci. Forum426–432, 1089 (2003)]. A Fe–0.485C–1.195Mn–1.185Si–0.98Ni–0.21Nb steel after Q–P–T process satisfies the designed requirement of tensile strength over 2000 MPa and elongation over 10%. The microstructure characterization indicates that this ultrahigh-strength steel consists of nanomicrostructures including lath martensite, filmlike retained austenite, and dispersive Nb-containing carbides. The effect of tempering time on the mechanical properties is analyzed based on microstructures.

The following paper reviews the breeding seasonality and its control in the domestic geese. Geese breeds can be classified into 3 types according to their breeding season: Type 1 inhabits higher latitude (40 to 45º N) temperate zones, and breeds during the longer days in spring and early summer. Types 2 inhabits mid-latitude (30 to 40º N) temperate regions, and start their breeding season in autumn and end in the following spring - early summer. Type 3 are the short-day breeding geese, located in subtropical areas (22 to 25º N), which breed from late summer to the following spring. Differences in breeding seasonalities are attributed to adaptations to environment conditions, enabling geese to fully utilize these conditions to achieve maximal reproductive performance and survival. Divergent breeding seasons are caused by the different pituitary secretions of gonadotrophins and prolactin in response to annual changes in photoperiod. In practical goose production, laying seasons can be controlled by imposing artificial photoperiods, with almost opposite photo-programmes for long or short day breeding geese, respectively. In addition, genetic selection and other animal husbandry measures such as timing of gosling stocking and nutritional intake levels can modify, to various degrees, the goose breeding seasonality.

Superluminescent diodes (SLD) have great potential for application as light sources including optical gyroscopes and sensors, optical time domain reflectometers (OTDR) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system testing. High output power and large spectral bandwidth are key features for SLD. High output power has been attempted by antireflection coating of the facet and utilizing the tapered active region. In addition, as the spectral width broadened, the coherence length is reduced. The short coherence length can reduce the Rayleigh backscattering in fiber gyroscope systems and can improve the spatial resolution in OTDR application. Therefore, broadening spectral width of SLD offers an advantage for obtaining the ultimate sensitivity in these applications.

The microstructure and composition of TiN films, formed by ion beam enhanced deposition (IBED) with different energy (40 keV and 90 keV) xenon ion bombardment and by simple physical vapor deposition (hereafter S-PVD) without any ion beam enhancement, and the interfaces between TiN films and Si substrates have been studied by cross-sectional view analytical electron microscopy in this work. Both the IBED TiN films prepared by Xe+ bombardment with either 40 keV or 90 keV energy ions and the S-PVD TiN film consist of nanocrystals. The TEM observations in the S-PVD case reveal an amorphous layer and a mixed layer of TiN grains and amorphous material at the TiN/Si interface. The thicknesses of the amorphous layer and the mixed layer are about 210 nm and at least 40 nm, respectively. Upon 40 keV Xe+ bombardment, an amorphous Si transition layer of about 50 nm thickness is found at the TiN/Si interface, and the TiN grains close to the TiN/Si interface are of weak preferred orientation. Upon 90 keV Xe+ bombardment, amorphous TiN and Si layers are found with a total thickness of 80 nm at the TiN/Si interface, and the TiN grains near the TiN/Si interface are of preferred orientation [111]TiN ‖ [001]Si. The energy of xenon ion bombardment has a strong effect on the microstructural characteristics of TiN films and the interfaces between the TiN films and the Si substrates, as well as the size and the preferred orientation of TiN grains.
