In order to clarify and visualize the real state of the structural performances of ships in operation and establish a more optimal, data-driven framework for ship design, construction and operation, an industry-academia joint R&D project on the digital twin for ship structures (DTSS) was conducted in Japan. This paper presents the major achievements of the project. The DTSS aims to grasp the stress responses over the whole ship structure in waves by data assimilation that merges hull monitoring and numerical simulation. Three data assimilation methods, namely, the wave spectrum method, Kalman filter method, and inverse finite element method were used, and their effectiveness was examined through model and full-scale ship measurements. Methods for predicting short-term extreme responses and long-term cumulative fatigue damage were developed for navigation and maintenance support using statistical approaches. In comparison with conventional approaches, response predictions were significantly improved by DTSS using real response data in encountered waves. Utilization scenarios for DTSS in the maritime industry were presented from the viewpoints of navigation support, maintenance support, rule improvement, and product value improvement, together with future research needs for implementation in the maritime industry.

Analyzing the appearances of political figures in large-scale news archives is increasingly important with the growing availability of large-scale news archives and developments in computer vision. We present a deep learning-based method combining face detection, tracking, and classification, which is particularly unique because it does not require any re-training when targeting new individuals. Users can feed only a few images of target individuals to reliably detect, track, and classify them. Extensive validation of prominent political figures in two news archives spanning 10 to 20 years, one containing three U.S. cable news and the other including two major Japanese news programs, consistently shows high performance and flexibility of the proposed method. The codes are made readily available to the public.

The Keio Twin Research Center (KoTReC) was established in 2009 at Keio University to combine two longitudinal cohort projects — the Keio Twin Study (KTS) for adolescence and adulthood and the Tokyo Twin Cohort Project (ToTCoP) for infancy and childhood. KoTReC also conducted a two-time panel study of self-control and psychopathology in twin adolescence in 2012 and 2013 and three independent anonymous cross-sectional twin surveys (ToTcross) before 2012 — the ToTCross, the Junior and Senior High School Survey and the High School Survey. This article introduces the recent research designs of KoTReC and its publications.

Calcium hydroxide was reacted with aliphatic calboxylic acids having the different number of carbons, and the precipitated products were characterized by TG, SEM, TEM and XRD. Layered structure was confirmed by TEM images and XRD patterns. From the results of XRD patterns, the interlayer spacing d increased with an increase of the number of carbons of carboxylic acids from 30 Å to 60 Å, and it was proportional to the carbon number of the materials. Calculated angles of the long chain fatty acids in the crystal structures of the reaction products was about sixty degrees. The adsorption ability of the nanocomposite prepared with stearic acid was carried out by using the mixture of three organic compounds at room temperature. For the adsorption experiment, only one kind of organic matters was selectively adsorbed.

In this proceeding paper, we introduce the recent results of Galactic maser astrometry by mainly focusing on those obtained with Japanese VLBI array VERA. So far we have obtained parallaxes for 86 sources including preliminary results, and combination with the data obtained with VLBA/BeSSeL provides astrometric results for 159 sources. With these most updated results we conduct preliminary determinations of Galactic fundamental parameters, obtaining R0 = 8.16 ± 0.26 kpc and Θ0 = 237 ± 8 km/s. We also derive the rotation curve of the Milky Way Galaxy and confirm the previous results that the rotation curve is fairly flat between 5 kpc and 16 kpc, while a remarkable deviation is seen toward the Galactic center region. In addition to the results on the Galactic structure, we also present brief overviews on other science topics related to masers conducted with VERA, and also discuss the future prospect of the project.

A specific type of buried defect in lamellar phase diblock copolymer was studied by experiments and simulations using self-consistent field theory (SCFT). The defects had 3-dimensional structures and created hexagonally arranged holes. They existed not only on the substrate with the guide structures but in fingerprints. The simulation results suggested that one of the causes of the defects is mismatch of the surface affinity of the neutral layer.

This paper introduces a fabrication method to achieve sub-15 nm line-and-space (L/S) patterns by combining grapho- and chemo-epitaxy using poly(styrene-block-methyl methacrylate) copolymer (PS-b-PMMA). The fabrication method is simple, since it eliminates photoresist stripping and also does not require any special materials to form pinning patterns. In this process, the ridges formed on spin-on-glass (SOG) surface work as physical guides and the photoresists on them are utilized as a pinning layer. Fine PS-b-PMMA L/S patterns were obtained in sufficient critical dimension (CD) range of the guide patterns that corresponded to the 15% dose margin using ArF immersion lithography. 3-dimensional grid defects were found to be the origin of the short defects. The half-pitch (hp) 15 nm L/S patterns were transferred successfully to SOG/spin-on-carbon (SOC) stacked substrate.

We also describe fabrication of sub-10 nm L/S patterns using a high-chi block copolymer (BCP).

The Keio Twin Research Center has conducted two longitudinal twin cohort projects and has collected three independent and anonymous twin data sets for studies of phenotypes related to psychological, socio-economic, and mental health factors. The Keio Twin Study has examined adolescent and adult cohorts, with a total of over 2,400 pairs of twins and their parents. DNA samples are available for approximately 600 of these twin pairs. The Tokyo Twin Cohort Project has followed a total of 1,600 twin pairs from infancy to early childhood. The large-scale cross-sectional twin study (CROSS) has collected data from over 4,000 twin pairs, from 3 to 26 years of age, and from two high school twin cohorts containing a total of 1,000 pairs of twins. These data sets of anonymous twin studies have mainly targeted academic performance, attitude, and social environment. The present article introduces the research designs and major findings of our center, such as genetic structures of cognitive abilities, personality traits, and academic performances, developmental effects of genes and environment on attitude, socio-cognitive ability and parenting, genes x environment interaction on attitude and conduct problem, and statistical methodological challenges and so on. We discuss the challenges in conducting twin research in Japan.

The rapid crystallization of amorphous silicon utilizing the rf inductive coupling thermal plasma jet of argon is demonstrated. Highly crystallized a-Si films were fabricated on th-SiO2 and textured a-Si:H:B/SnO2/glass by adjusting the translational velocity of the substrate stage. The H concentration in the films decreased from 1021 cm-3 to 1019 cm-3 with no marked increases in oxygen and nitrogen impurity concentrations and defect density. The crystallization proceeds from the bottom to front surface in terms of the volume expansion during the solidification and crystallization of liquid Si.

Combinatorial catalysis on EtOH steam reforming has been performed on referring catalysis database on elemental reactions of EtOH SR.

SrS:Ce nanoparticles were prepared using a reverse micelle method and coated by ZnO. The mono-dispersed nanoparticles whose size was as small as 3nm were observed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) method. Optical properties of the core-shell SrS:Ce/ZnO nanoparticle was studied. UV-visible absorption and photoluminescence (PL) properties were measured and compared with those of SrS:Ce and SrS nanoparticles. Bright blue photoluminescence (around 440 nm) was observed from SrS:Ce at a room temperature when nanoparticles were excited using a Hg lamp. The PL peak intensity enhancement was observed after forming the ZnO shell. The optical absorption profile of nanoparticles was associated with the band edge feature of SrS. The coating of the SrS:Ce surface by ZnO has affected the electronic structure of SrS:Ce nanoparticles.

The fabrication of ZnO coated ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles were achieved using simple methods. ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles were prepared by a mechanical milling method. Coating of ZnO was then performed using a simple chemical method. Structural properties were evaluated by the X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and the transmission electron microscope (TEM). Optical properties of the ZnO coated ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticle were characterized by exciting the particle included solvent using an UV-LED (400 nm). Bright orange color fluorescence was observed, and the fluorescence intensity of ZnO coated ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles was enhanced as compared to uncoated ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles. The capping of the core surface has probably terminated surface defects of ZnS:Mn2+ nanoparticles, and resulted in the improved fluorescence intensity.

Our efforts to combine the combinatorial technology and microstructure analysis to develop catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) technology have been described. This offers the realization of “materiomics” in comprehensive material research. Catalyst technologies are indispensable for wide use of PEMFC, which are regarded as the low emission and highly efficient energy conversion device for the next generation. We have applied the combinatorial method for the hydrogen production and/or purification of catalysts, and anode catalyst investigations. The catalyst library consisting of precious metals loaded on various metal oxides was tested for water gas shift reaction and steam reforming of methanol and/or DME. Various metal oxides added to platinum loaded on carbon were screened for anode catalysts. The microstructure of each catalyst was analyzed by employing scanning electron and/or transmission electron microscopy. This paper mainly describes the catalysis screening results of above reactions that form a part of “materiomics”.
