The SPARC tokamak is a critical next step towards commercial fusion energy. SPARC is designed as a high-field ($B_0 = 12.2$ T), compact ($R_0 = 1.85$ m, $a = 0.57$ m), superconducting, D-T tokamak with the goal of producing fusion gain $Q>2$ from a magnetically confined fusion plasma for the first time. Currently under design, SPARC will continue the high-field path of the Alcator series of tokamaks, utilizing new magnets based on rare earth barium copper oxide high-temperature superconductors to achieve high performance in a compact device. The goal of $Q>2$ is achievable with conservative physics assumptions ($H_{98,y2} = 0.7$) and, with the nominal assumption of $H_{98,y2} = 1$, SPARC is projected to attain $Q \approx 11$ and $P_{\textrm {fusion}} \approx 140$ MW. SPARC will therefore constitute a unique platform for burning plasma physics research with high density ($\langle n_{e} \rangle \approx 3 \times 10^{20}\ \textrm {m}^{-3}$), high temperature ($\langle T_e \rangle \approx 7$ keV) and high power density ($P_{\textrm {fusion}}/V_{\textrm {plasma}} \approx 7\ \textrm {MW}\,\textrm {m}^{-3}$) relevant to fusion power plants. SPARC's place in the path to commercial fusion energy, its parameters and the current status of SPARC design work are presented. This work also describes the basis for global performance projections and summarizes some of the physics analysis that is presented in greater detail in the companion articles of this collection.

The search for life in the Universe is a fundamental problem of astrobiology and modern science. The current progress in the detection of terrestrial-type exoplanets has opened a new avenue in the characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres and in the search for biosignatures of life with the upcoming ground-based and space missions. To specify the conditions favourable for the origin, development and sustainment of life as we know it in other worlds, we need to understand the nature of global (astrospheric), and local (atmospheric and surface) environments of exoplanets in the habitable zones (HZs) around G-K-M dwarf stars including our young Sun. Global environment is formed by propagated disturbances from the planet-hosting stars in the form of stellar flares, coronal mass ejections, energetic particles and winds collectively known as astrospheric space weather. Its characterization will help in understanding how an exoplanetary ecosystem interacts with its host star, as well as in the specification of the physical, chemical and biochemical conditions that can create favourable and/or detrimental conditions for planetary climate and habitability along with evolution of planetary internal dynamics over geological timescales. A key linkage of (astro)physical, chemical and geological processes can only be understood in the framework of interdisciplinary studies with the incorporation of progress in heliophysics, astrophysics, planetary and Earth sciences. The assessment of the impacts of host stars on the climate and habitability of terrestrial (exo)planets will significantly expand the current definition of the HZ to the biogenic zone and provide new observational strategies for searching for signatures of life. The major goal of this paper is to describe and discuss the current status and recent progress in this interdisciplinary field in light of presentations and discussions during the NASA Nexus for Exoplanetary System Science funded workshop ‘Exoplanetary Space Weather, Climate and Habitability’ and to provide a new roadmap for the future development of the emerging field of exoplanetary science and astrobiology.

The seasonality of individual influenza subtypes/lineages and the association of influenza epidemics with meteorological factors in the tropics/subtropics have not been well understood. The impact of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic on the prevalence of seasonal influenza virus remains to be explored. Using wavelet analysis, the periodicities of A/H3N2, seasonal A/H1N1, A/H1N1pdm09, Victoria and Yamagata were identified, respectively, in Panzhihua during 2006–2015. As a subtropical city in southwestern China, Panzhihua is the first industrial city in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The relationship between influenza epidemics and local climatic variables was examined based on regression models. The temporal distribution of influenza subtypes/lineages during the pre-pandemic (2006–2009), pandemic (2009) and post-pandemic (2010–2015) years was described and compared. A total of 6892 respiratory specimens were collected and 737 influenza viruses were isolated. A/H3N2 showed an annual cycle with a peak in summer–autumn, while A/H1N1pdm09, Victoria and Yamagata exhibited an annual cycle with a peak in winter–spring. Regression analyses demonstrated that relative humidity was positively associated with A/H3N2 activity while negatively associated with Victoria activity. Higher prevalence of A/H1N1pdm09 and Yamagata was driven by lower absolute humidity. The role of weather conditions in regulating influenza epidemics could be complicated since the diverse viral transmission modes and mechanism. Differences in seasonality and different associations with meteorological factors by influenza subtypes/lineages should be considered in epidemiological studies in the tropics/subtropics. The development of subtype- and lineage-specific prevention and control measures is of significant importance.

In indirect-drive inertial confinement fusion, the radiation symmetry must be controlled for the achievement of hotspot ignition. The radiation symmetry is of great importance. In this paper, we investigate the drive asymmetry of the M-band (2–5 keV) radiation emitted from an Au holhraum wall by using the three-dimensional view-factor code IRAD3D. Analysis of the M-band flux drive at the Shenguang-III laser facility shows that it is asymmetric and that the asymmetry varies with time. For a given cross section over the pole, the initial M-band flux asymmetries are P2 = 11.59, P4 = 1.41, and P6 = −0.64%. When the asymmetries are artificially added to a symmetric radiation drive, the position of the deuterium-tritium (DT) ice/gas interface is asymmetric for a National Ignition Facility capsule in 1D simulation. This means that M-band flux asymmetry can lead to implosion asymmetry even if the total radiation is symmetric. Pure CH and Si-doped CH capsules are considered. The results show that a mid-Z dopant can partly reduce the asymmetry. However, the asymmetry is still very large. Thus, it is necessary to study the M-band flux asymmetry and its influence on the implosion symmetry.

We study hydrogenated amorphous silicon germanium (a-SiGe:H) deposited by HWCVD for the use as low band gap absorber in multijunction junction solar cells. We deposited layers with Tauc optical band gaps of 1.21 to 1.56 eV and studied the hydrogen bonding with FTIR for layers that were deposited at several reaction pressures. For our reaction conditions, we found an optimal reaction pressure of 38 µbar. The material that is obtained under these conditions does not meet all device quality requirements for a-SiGe:H, which is, as we hypothesize, caused by the presence of He that is used to dilute the GeH4 source gas. We present an initial single junction n-i-p solar cell with a Tauc optical band gap of 1.45 eV and a short circuit current density of 18.7 mA/cm2.

The local structures and the EPR g factors g║ and g┴ are theoretically studied for the tetragonal Ti3+-Vo centers in BaTiO3 bulks and thin films using the perturbation formulas of the g factors for a 3d1 ion in tetragonally elongated octahedra and compressed tetrahedra, respectively, based on the cluster approach. For the Ti3+-Vo center in BaTiO3 bulks, the impurity Ti3+ suffers the displacement away from the oxygen vacancy Vo by about 0.15 Å along the C4 axis due to the electrostatic repulsion of the Vo. Nevertheless, the Ti3+-Vo center in BaTiO3 thin films may exhibit the tetragonally compressed tetrahedron, characterized by the bond angle 55.88° larger than that (≈54.74°) of an ideal tetrahedron. The quite different g factors (especially g anisotropies Δg = g║ − g┴) for the two kinds of samples are discussed, in view of the dissimilar bonding or coordination environments (i.e., incomplete bonding in the thin films may lead to the lower coordination number).

The effect of high temperatures (above 25°C) on starch concentration and the morphology of starch granules in the grains of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) were studied. Wheat plants of cultivars Yangmai 9 (weak-gluten) and Yangmai 12 (medium-gluten) were treated with high temperatures for 3 days at different times after anthesis. The results showed that the starch concentration of grains given a heat-shock treatment above 30°C were lower than those developing at normal temperature in both cultivars. High temperature lowered starch concentration due to the decrease of amylopectin. Under the same temperature, the effect of heat shock from 6 to 8 days after anthesis (DAA) was the greatest, whereas from 36 to 38 DAA the effect was the least. The effects of high temperatures after anthesis on starch-pasting properties were similar to those on starch concentration, especially after 35–40°C treatments. The size, shape and structure of starch granules in wheat grains (determined by electron microscopy) after heat shock were visibly different from the control. When given heat shock during development, the starch granules in mature wheat grains were ellipsoid in shape and bound loosely with a protein sheath in Yangmai 9, while they were damaged and compressed with fissures in Yangmai 12, indicating the differences in resistance to high temperature between cultivars. Ratios of large (type-A) and small (type-B) starch granules significantly decreased under heat shock, which limited the potential sink size for dry matter deposition in the grain.

The approach of combining computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for continuum fluid and the discrete element method (DEM) for discrete particles has been increasingly used to study the fundamentals of coupled particle–fluid flows. Different CFD–DEM models have been used. However, the origin and the applicability of these models are not clearly understood. In this paper, the origin of different model formulations is discussed first. It shows that, in connection with the continuum approach, three sets of formulations exist in the CFD–DEM approach: an original format set I, and subsequent derivations of set II and set III, respectively, corresponding to the so-called model A and model B in the literature. A comparison and the applicability of the three models are assessed theoretically and then verified from the study of three representative particle–fluid flow systems: fluidization, pneumatic conveying and hydrocyclones. It is demonstrated that sets I and II are essentially the same, with small differences resulting from different mathematical or numerical treatments of a few terms in the original equation. Set III is however a simplified version of set I. The testing cases show that all the three models are applicable to gas fluidization and, to a large extent, pneumatic conveying. However, the application of set III is conditional, as demonstrated in the case of hydrocyclones. Strictly speaking, set III is only valid when fluid flow is steady and uniform. Set II and, in particular, set I, which is somehow forgotten in the literature, are recommended for the future CFD–DEM modelling of complex particle–fluid flow.

The qualitative behavior of positive solutions of the neutral-delay two-species Lotka-Volterra competitive system with several discrete delays is investigated. Sufficient conditions are obtained for the local asymptotic stability of the positive steady state. In fact, some of these sufficient conditions are also necessary except at those critical values. Results on the oscillatory and non-oscillatory characteristics of the positive solutions are also included.

A possible control strategy against the spread of an infectious disease is the treatment with antimicrobials that are given prophylactically to those that had contact with an infective person. The treatment continues until recovery or until it becomes obvious that there was no infection in the first place. The model considers susceptible, treated uninfected exposed, treated infected, (untreated) infectious, and recovered individuals. The overly optimistic assumptions are made that treated uninfected individuals are not susceptible and treated infected individuals are not infectious. Since treatment lengths are considered that have an arbitrary distribution, the model system consists of ordinary differential and integral equations. We study the impact of the treatment length distribution on the large-time behavior of the model solutions, namely whether the solutions converge to an equilibrium or whether they are driven into undamped oscillations.

The draining of a fluid layer between rigid plane parallel boundaries under a constant normal force is considered. In Part 1 the effect of fluid inertia was considered in the inviscid and low- but finite-Reynolds-number limits along with the inertia of the moving body; in Part 2, we consider the case of negligible inertia of the moving body. We develop an approximate large-Reynolds-number solution, valid until the boundary layers of the rigid surfaces begin to overlap, and present a new exact solution of the full Navier–Stokes equations for a time-dependent double-axisymmetric stagnation-point flow. These solutions exhibit interesting new features that illustrate the coupling of a time-dependent inviscid core flow with the growth of an unsteady boundary layer started from rest and the effect of Reynolds number on the merging of the boundary layers at large time.

The draining of thin fluid layers between rigid or deformable surfaces has been extensively studied in the limit of thin films where inertial effects are of negligible importance. In the present investigation, which is in two parts, we shall examine the inertial draining of a thin fluid layer between planar parallel surfaces under the action of a constant normal force. This is a simple model for dropping a sheet of paper or a book on a table or applying a piston to a microchip. The novelty of the problem is that we shall consider both the inertia of the object and that of the fluid for all Reynolds numbers where the flow remains laminar. In Part 1 of the study we shall derive a simplified Navier–Stokes equation for the general case which contains the dynamic equation for the motion of the object. Solutions will be presented for the time-dependent motion of the object and the intervening fluid in the gap for all ratios of object to fluid inertia in the limit of infinite Reynolds number and for small Reynolds numbers (Re < 10) in the limit where the time rate of change of momentum of the object is small compared with that of the fluid in the gap. In Part 2, we shall examine the limit where time-dependent boundary layers develop along the top and bottom surfaces in response to the time-varying core flow and also present a new exact Navier–Stokes solution for a time-dependent double-axisymmetric stagnation-point flow.

A new magneto-optical (MO) imaging system for high-throughput characterization of combinatorial magnetic thin films has been developed. The instrument allows us to measure both Faraday rotation and ellipticity maps at various wavelengths (400 nm∼1000 nm), different magnetic fields (0∼2000 G), and different temperatures (12 K∼300 K) for wide variety of materials. We used the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) modulation technique to map MO properties, relatively free from substrate effects. The superiority of this system is that magnetic hysteresis curves of numerous specimens with different compositions prepared by the combinatorial technique can be simultaneously measured at one sweep of magnetic field, providing an efficient characterization method for combinatorial magnetic materials. We also confirmed that the system possesses enough spatial resolution and sensitivity for detecting MO signals of individual pixels contained in a combinatorial library.
