The first size reduction (FSR) in the Reticulofenestra-Gephyrocapsa-Emiliania (RGE) lineage (order Isochrysidales), which occurred in the early Oligocene (~32 Ma), is of great significance for understanding the Lilliput effect that has affected coccolithophore communities from the late Eocene to this day. We conducted a morphologic analysis on the coccoliths of Reticulofenestra species that lived during the late middle Eocene to early Oligocene (~40–31 Ma), using marine sediments from the South Atlantic Ocean. Our data show increasing size and decreasing abundance of the large species during the late Eocene, leading to their disappearance at the FSR, and a concurrent decrease in the size variability of the small- to medium-sized coccoliths whose central opening diameter had become very reduced. Although the cosmopolitan late Paleogene through Neogene size decrease in coccolithophores has been linked to the concomitant long-term decline in global pCO2, we suggest here that the FSR was the result of environmental destabilization caused by the expansion of eutrophic environments following the late Eocene establishment of overturning circulation associated with ice buildup on Antarctica. This study also leads us to propose a hypothetical model that links coccolith morphology of species of the RGE lineage and trophic resources in the upper ocean: the small- to medium-sized, r-selected coccolithophores with smaller coccolith central openings live in nutrient-rich waters where they rely mostly on photosynthesis and little on mixotrophy, whereas the larger, K-selected species with larger coccolith central openings live in oligotrophic waters where they are more dependent on mixotrophy.

Wireless capsule endoscopes (WCEs) are pill-sized camera-embedded devices that can provide visualization of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract by capturing and transmitting images to an external receiver. Determination of the exact location of the WCE is crucial for the accurate navigation of the WCE through external guidance, tracking of the GI abnormality, and the treatment of the detected disease. Despite the enormous progress in the real-time tracking of the WCE, a well-calibrated analytical model is still missing for the accurate localization of WCEs by the measurements from different onboard sensing units. In this paper, a well-calibrated analytical model for the magnetic localization of the WCE was established by optimizing the magnetic moment in the magnetic dipole model. The Jacobian-based iterative method was employed to solve the position of the WCE. An error model was established and experimentally verified for the analysis and prediction of the localization errors caused by inaccurate measurements from the magnetic field sensor. The assessment of the real-time localization of the WCE was performed via experimental trials using an external permanent magnet (EPM) mounted on a robotic manipulator and a WCE equipped with a 3-axis magnetic field sensor and an inertial measurement unit (IMU). The localization errors were measured under different translational and rotational motion modes and working spaces. The results showed that the selection of workspace (distance relative to the EPM) could lead to different positioning errors. The proposed magnetic localization method holds great potential for the real-time localization of WCEs when performing complex motions during GI diagnosis.

This paper proposes a kinematic obstacle avoidance algorithm for Space hyper-redundant manipulators, and its basic idea is to use a static and a dynamic curve to constrain the macroshape of the manipulators simultaneously. The static curve is constructed based on a traditional rapidly exploring random tree algorithm, and a backbone curve is utilized as the dynamic curve. For these two curves, two novel shape control methods are proposed to accomplish the shape constraining process. Finally, we verify the reliability and effectiveness of our algorithm through simulations.

In this contribution, we devoted ourselves to fabricating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) activity copolymers via one-pot combination of RAFT polymerization and Biginelli reaction for the first time. When the feeding ratio of TPB was 33.5%, the molar fraction of TPB was, respectively, about 14.2 and 22.5% in PEG-PTE1 copolymers by two-step strategy and PEG-PTE2 copolymers by one-pot strategy with the similar structure. The Mn of PEG-PTE1 increased to 59,300 from 52,800 of PEG-AE presoma with narrow PDI, which was more than Mn of PEG-PTE2 with 52,300. As compared with PEG-PTE2, when the feeding ratio of TPB was 48.6%, the molar fraction of TPB increased to 32.6% in PEG-PTE3. In aqueous solution, the as-obtained PEG-PTE2 copolymers can self-assemble into fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) with 100–180 nm spherical morphology, the maximal emission peak of which presented at 460 nm with the obvious AIE phenomenon. Moreover, due to the low toxicity and excellent cell dyeing behavior, the as-prepared PEG-PTE2 copolymers displayed great potential for biomedical applications.

In this work, the nitrogen-doped carbon materials (NCM) and nitrogen/sulfur codoped carbon materials (NSCM) were prepared using conventional benzoxazine (BOZ) and sulfur-containing benzoxazine as precursor and SBA-15 as template. The morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of carbon materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, the X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption, cyclic voltammetry, and galvanostatic charge–discharge. The results show that the as-prepared carbon materials have ordered mesoporous structure, large specific surface area, and excellent electrochemical properties. The NSCM treated at 800 °C exhibit an extremely high specific capacitance of 550 F/g at the current density of 0.5 A/g in 0.5 mol H2SO4 electrolyte, which shows great improvement compared with NCM. The nitrogen/sulfur codoping is suggested to be a very effective method to improve the performance of carbon materials, and the NSCM should be a promising candidate as electrode materials for supercapacitors.

In this work, the negatively charged [NbMoO6]− nanosheets (NSs) were combined with positively charged [5,10,15,20-tetrakis (N-methylpyridinium-4-yl) porphyrinato cobalt] (CoTMPyP) to fabricate a sandwich-like CoTMPyP/[NbMoO6]− NSs intercalated material by a direct self-assembling process. The results confirmed that CoTMPyP cations formed an inclined monolayer between [NbMoO6]− NSs and the inclined angle was about 68°. The electrochemical properties of CoTMPyP/[NbMoO6]− NSs composite were also investigated by cyclic voltammetry and liner sweep voltammetry, which showed the enhanced electron transferred ability. The CoTMPyP/[NbMoO6]− NSs modified electrode displayed excellent electrocatalytic activity towards oxygen reduction with the reduction peak potential shifting from −0.681 to −0.235 V. And oxygen could be reduced to generate hydrogen peroxide with a two-electron process in neutral electrolytes. Moreover, the reduction peak current was linear relationship with the square root of scan rates, implying that the catalytic reaction depended on oxygen diffusion.

In this work, a N-doped CsTi2NbO7@g-C3N4 (NTCN) heterojunction nanocomposite was synthesized by a simple one-step calcination method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction patterns, scanning electron microscopy, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that g-C3N4 was formed both on the surface and within the interlayers of CsTi2NbO7, in which CsTi2NbO7 was in situ doped by nitrogen atoms to form N–CsTi2NbO7. The NTCN composite displayed higher electrocatalytic activity toward the detection of nitrite than pure CsTi2NbO7 and g-C3N4. The main reasons could be attributed to the synergistic effects of morphology engineering, N-doping, and layered heterojunction. The NTCN-based electrochemical sensor expressed a good linear relationship range from 0.0999 to 3.15 mmol/L with a detection limit of 2.63 × 10−5 mol/L. The good recovery, stability, and reproducibility of this biosensor showed the potential application in environmental monitoring.

In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of an encapsulated bubble in steady and oscillatory electric fields theoretically, based on a leaky dielectric model. On the bubble surface, an applied electric field generates a Maxwell stress, in addition to hydrodynamic traction and membrane mechanical stress. Our model also includes the effect of interfacial charge due to the jump of the current and the stretching of the interface. We focus on the axisymmetric deformation of the encapsulated bubble induced by the electric field and carry out our analysis using Legendre polynomials. In our first example, the encapsulating membrane is modelled as a nearly incompressible interface with bending rigidity. Under a steady uniform electric field, the encapsulated bubble resumes an elongated equilibrium shape, dominated by the second- and fourth-order shape modes. The deformed shape agrees well with experimental observations reported in the literature. Our model reveals that the interfacial charge distribution is determined by the magnitude of the shape modes, as well as the permittivity and conductivity of the external and internal fluids. The effects of the electric field on the natural frequency of the oscillating bubble are also shown. For our second example, we considered a bubble encapsulated with a hyperelastic membrane with bending rigidity, subject to an oscillatory electric field. We show that the bubble can modulate its oscillating frequency and reach a stable shape oscillation at an appreciable amplitude.

Nanomaterials have been intensively studied over the past decades with many advantages over traditional bulk materials in many applications. Nanomaterials' properties are largely governed by their chemical compositions, sizes, shapes, dimensions, morphologies and structures, which are primarily controlled with the chemical and/or physical fabrication methods and processes. This prospective will highlight recent progress on the modifications of oxide nanomaterials' properties by hydrogenation, namely heat treatment under hydrogen or hydrogen plasma environment, for various applications.

Excellent sites are necessary for developing and installing ground-based large telescopes. For very-high-resolution solar observations, it had been unclear whether there exist good candidate sites in the west areas in China, including the Tibetan Plateau and the Pamirs Plateau. The project of solar site survey for the next-generation large solar telescopes, i.e., the Chinese Giant Solar Telescope (CGST) and the large coronagraph, has been launched since 2011. Based on the close collaboration among Chinese solar society and the scientists from NSO, HAO and other institutes, we have successfully developed the standard instruments for solar site survey and applied them to more than 50 different sites distributed in Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, Yunnan and Ningxia provinces. We have built two long-term monitoring sites in Tibet and the large Shangri-La to take systematic site data. Clear evidence, including the key parameters of seeing factor, sky brightness and water vapor content, has indicated that a few potential sites in the large Tibetan areas should obtain the excellent astronomical conditions for our purpose to develop CGST and large coronagraph. We introduce the fresh site survey results in this report.

Bulk production of iron nanowire inside carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from iron phthalocyanine (FePc) polymer under 800 °C is presented for the first time. The bis-phthalonitrile was firstly reacted with iron nanoparticles to produce iron phthalonitrile oligomer, and heat treatments made the formation of CNTs occurred during the carbonization process of FePc polymer at ambient pressure in nitro atmosphere under 800 °C. The iron nanowire inside carbon tubes from the metal Pc polymer possessed excellent electromagnetic loss and magnetic loss properties.

We studied the devitrification kinetics for the binary (80GeS2–20Ga2S3, mol%) and ternary (77GeS2–15Ga2S3–6CsI, mol%) glass compositions using the differential thermal analysis (DTA) technique. The overall activation energies for devitrification for these two types of glasses were determined by using the Kissinger method and the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami equation from the DTA data. The t-t-t curves were calculated using the activation energy for devitrification for each composition derived from the DTA experiments. The experimental evidences have shown that the incorporation of SnS2 and Sb2S3 in a ternary-based GeS2 glass slows down the overall devitrification rate significantly, which is confirmed by the reduction in the overall area under the crystallization exotherm.

Single crystals of KBeBO3F (KBBF) up to 2 mm in thickness were grown by using a spontaneous nucleation method. The flux was composed of KF and B2O3, and the optimal ratio for growing KBBF single crystal thicker than 1 mm is suggested to be (1.0–1.5):(5.0):(0.7–1.2) (KBBF:KF:B2O3) in molar ratio. The ideal morphology of.KBBF is two sets of tabular facets and a set of rhombic facets. Surface morphology.was characterized both by optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Transmission spectra showed that high transmission was maintained up to 170 nm. Based on refractive index measurements, phase matching curves for types I and II were determined. Using a prism coupling method, the effective fourth harmonic generation for an Nd:YAB laser was realized in an 0.6-mm-thick KBBF sample. The output energy of the 266-nm beam was 0.282 mJ, and the conversion efficiency was 11.8%. A 183.6-nm laser over 1 mW was obtained from a Ti:sapphire second harmonic generation beam in an 0.8-mm KBBF sample. The conversion efficiency reached 2.3%. A 179.4-nm laser was also observed from a 358.7-nm laser by directly frequency doubling. This is the shortest wavelength obtained through nonlinear optical processes in a solid-state laser.

Pure and neodymium-doped gadolinium calcium oxoborate crystals of high quality were grown by the Czochralski method. The orientation of crystal was precisely determined, and the samples for measurements were prepared. Through synchrotron x-ray topography and high-resolution x-ray diffractometry, the twin structure was discovered. Some properties such as the figure of merit value, and dielectric, piezoelectric, and elastic constants were measured along with a discussion of the anisotropy of the laser properties.

The reduction of OH- and S–H absorption bands in unary and ternary germanium sulphide glasses with oxides and hydroxides present in the raw materials and in impure glasses was studied via the chemical reaction of H2and HCl gases at high temperatures. Multicomponent phase equilibria calculations in the Ge–S–H–O–X (X = Cl, I) system were performed to determine the equilibrium partial pressures of gaseous species for removing oxygen and hydrogen from the glasses used for infrared (IR) applications. The effect of carbon on the reduction in oxide and hydroxide absorption bands was also investigated. The absorption characterization was carried out using a Fourier transform infrared reflection spectrophotometer. The IR absorption bands between 1000 and 3700 cm-1 were identified and analyzed. The Boson peaks (BP) in glass samples with two different OH- concentrations were also analyzed. It was found that the presence of OH- enhanced the intensity of Boson peaks. The sites for OH- and shared oxygen with the main [GeS4] 4- tetrahedron structural units in the glass are discussed with respect to the BP and IR absorption analyses. The structure model also identifies the origin of the reduced Rare-earth (RE+3 ) ion solubility (in particular Pr 3+ ions) and its dependence on OH- ion concentrations in GeS2 glasses

The patterned nc-Si/a-SiNx:H superlattices were fabricated by using laser interference crystallization method and investigated with atomic force microscope (AFM), micro-Raman spectroscope, cross-section transmission electron microscope (TEM) and high resolution electron microscope (HREM). We found that after laser irradiation, self-assembled Si nanocrystallites (nc-Si) are formed within the initial a-Si:H sublayers, moreover, in the plane parallel to the surface of the films, these nc-Si orderly distribute in the certain regions with the same periodicity of 2.0 µm as phase shifting mask grating. Based on the structural analyses, the crystallization mechanism and the origin of the self-assembled phenomena are briefly discussed.
