In present study, the semi-solid slurry of the AZ91–2Ca–1.5Ce alloy was firstly prepared by gas-bubbling processing and then was formed by die casting and squeeze casting, respectively. The influence of processing parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy was investigated. The results show that increase of gas-flow rate and appropriate pouring temperature can improve the quality of the semi-solid slurry and change the morphology of primary α-Mg particles to rosette-like shape or roundness. Meanwhile, the addition of calcium and cerium refines the as-cast microstructure and dramatically improves the tensile properties, also the strengthening phase Al4Ce exists around the grain boundary. The peak ultimate tensile strength (UTS), yield strength, and elongation of rheo-die casting AZ91–2Ca–1.5Ce alloy are 202 MPa, 154 MPa, and 2.3%, respectively. Especially, compared with conventional liquid die-casting, the UTS and elongation of rheo-die casting AZ91–2Ca–1.5Ce alloy were improved by 8% and 64%, respectively. Meanwhile, the rheo-die casting alloy also showed higher mechanical properties than rheo-squeeze casting alloy, since the higher speed that die casting provided could induce more compact microstructure and remain the semi-solid characteristic better.

The effects of different Gd additions on wear behavior of the T6 heat treated Mg–xGd–3Y–0.5Zr alloys were investigated. The wear tests were carried out using a Ball-on-flat type wear apparatus against an AISI 52100 type bearing steel ball counterface in the load range of 3–15 N, sliding speed range of 0.03–0.18 m/s, temperature range of 25–200 °C and at a constant sliding distance of 400 m. The results showed that the wear rate of the tested alloys increased with increasing sliding load. By increasing the wear temperature to 200 °C, the wear rate of the Mg–6Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy decreased by about 24%. At higher wear speeds, wear resistance of the alloys increased due to the formation of stable oxide layers on the worn surfaces. The alloy containing 12 wt% Gd exhibited higher wear resistance compared with the alloys containing lower Gd contents under the same conditions.

In this study, the temperature gradient on lunar surface was simulated by deep cryogenic treatment and cryogenic thermocycling. The influence of these treatments on room and low temperature tensile properties and fracture behavior of the as-cast Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy was then investigated. The results have shown that the cryogenic treatments caused the precipitation of Mg24(Gd, Y)5 phase and improved the ductility of the alloy. The deep cryogenic treatment almost has no influence on the tensile properties of the alloy, while the cryogenic thermocycling slightly improve its tensile properties at room temperature and slightly deteriorate the ultimate tensile strength of the alloy at low temperature. The cleavage fracture is the main fracture mechanism at both room and low temperatures. To conclude, this alloy can withstand the huge temperature gradient on the lunar surface and shows application perspective.

The microstructures, high-temperature mechanical properties, and fracture behavior of Mg–Gd–Y–Zr alloy components produced by low-pressure sand casting with different Gd and Zr contents, have been investigated. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS), tensile yield strength, and total elongation (EL) were measured within the 25–300 °C range. At the same temperatures, the UTS and yield strength (YS) of the T6 treated Mg–xGd–3Y–0.5Zr alloys increased with Gd content increasing from 9 to 11%, which was attributed to the improvement of precipitation strengthening. Increasing the Zr content from 0.3 to 0.5% leads to dramatic decrease in grain size and improved tensile properties of T6 treated Mg–10Gd–3Y–yZr alloys which is considered to be due to grain-boundary strengthening. With the increase of tensile temperature, both UTS and YS of the T6 treated Mg–xGd–3Y–yZr alloys initially increase and then decrease. The β′ precipitates provide important strengthening sources in experimental alloys, especially at elevated temperatures. The Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy shows good combination of strength and EL within the 25–300 °C range.

In this study, semi-solid slurry of AZ91–2 wt% Ca (AZ91–2Ca) alloy was prepared by gas bubbling and shaped by rheo-squeeze casting process. The results indicate that fine semi-solid slurry of AZ91–2Ca alloy could be obtained by gas bubbling within 30 s, with primary α-Mg particles having an average diameter less than 50 μm and average shape factor higher than 0.7. With the decrease of pouring temperature from 599 to 590 °C, both tensile strength and elongation of rheo-squeeze casting AZ91–2Ca alloy first increased and then decreased. The rheo-squeeze casting AZ91–2Ca alloy sample prepared at pouring temperature of 596 °C exhibited the peak tensile strength and elongation. Compared with conventional squeeze casting, the improvement in mechanical properties of rheo-squeeze casting AZ91–2Ca alloy was mainly attributed to the grain refinement strengthening, including the refinement and spheroidization of primary α-Mg particles and the refinement in the residual melt.

A continuous nonflux inclusion-removal method, rotating gas bubble stirring, is used to purify Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr melt. The effects of rotating gas bubble stirring process parameters (Ar flow rate, time, and rotating speed) on purifying effectiveness, mechanical properties, and fracture behavior of sand-cast Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy are studied. The results show that too high or too low Ar flow rate is unfavorable for inclusion-removal. The results also indicate that the high rotary speed of spraying gas is helpful to improve the inclusion-removal and mechanical properties. But when the melt is subjected to overtime gas bubbling treatment, the mechanical properties became poor again. Nonflux purification does not change the microstructure of Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr alloy. However, rotating gas bubble stirring has a certain effect on the fracture pattern of the alloy. In addition, the melt purifying mechanism of the gas bubble stirring treatment for the sand-cast alloy was discussed systematically.

Our research aims at exploring a new oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst with effective catalytic capability, which can be used in the metal-air batteries. ORR electrocatalysts of carbon black and carbon aerogel supported Pt-based nanoparticles were synthesized by a chemical impregnation reduction method. The electrochemical measurement consisted of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and line scan of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) conducted in alkaline medium as well as the single-cell tests. All the tests indicate that the Pt–Zn/carbon aerogel (Pt–Zn/CA) catalyst, with the specific discharge capacity reaching 1349.5 mA h g−1, exhibits the best catalytic performance among all the tested catalysts. The doping of Zn forms Pt-rich surface, creates more d-band vacancies, and reduces the leaching problem; the use of carbon aerogels brings larger specific surface area. These aspects have all improved the catalytic activity per unit mass.

Different parts of a casting may receive different microstructures during cooling particularly for the large scale casting, which can affect the fatigue behavior. In the present study, in consideration of the safety and reliability, the microstructures, tensile properties, and high cycle fatigue behaviors of different regions in a low-pressure sand-cast Mg–10Gd–3Y–0.5Zr (GW103K) magnesium alloy component with large scale and complicated structure were investigated. The results showed that the tensile properties particularly ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (EL) varied with regions and the fatigue strength varied in a range from 100 to 115 MPa. In addition, crack initiation, crack propagation, and fracture behavior of the studied alloys after tensile test and high cycle fatigue test were also investigated systematically.

The addition of Al to a Mg–10Gd alloy was found to lead to substantial grain size reduction during casting at concentrations between 0.8% and 1.3%. At these concentrations, Al2Gd particles were found at the center of grains, and the orientation relationship $[112]_{{\rm{Al}}_{\rm{2}} {\rm{Gd}}} \,{\rm{‖}}\,[2\bar 1\bar 10]_{{\rm{\alpha - Mg}}} ,\,(1\bar 10)_{{\rm{Al}}_{\rm{2}} {\rm{Gd}}} \,{\rm{‖}}\,(0\bar 110)_{{\rm{\alpha - Mg}}} $ was found reproducibly between Al2Gd and α-Mg, indicating that these are the heterogeneous nucleant particles that form in situ at these Al contents. Most of these nuclei were between 2 and 7 μm in size. Furthermore, little grain coarsening was observed during solution treatment, particularly compared with an alloy grain refined by Zr particles where substantial coarsening occurred. This appears to be because Al2Gd particles restrict grain boundary motion during solution treatment.
