The third-order law links energy transfer rates in the inertial range of magneto- hydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence with third-order structure functions. Anisotropy, a typical property in the solar wind, challenges the applicability of the third-order law with the isotropic assumption. To shed light on the energy transfer process in the presence of anisotropy, we conducted direct numerical simulations of forced MHD turbulence with normal and hyper-viscosity under various strengths of the external magnetic field ($B_0$), and calculated three forms of third-order structure function with or without averaging of the azimuthal or polar angles with respect to $B_0$ direction. Correspondingly, three estimated energy transfer rates were obtained. The result shows that the peak of normalized third-order structure function occurs at larger scales closer to the $B_0$ direction, and the maximum of longitudinal transfer rates shifts away from the $B_0$ direction at larger $B_0$. Compared with normal viscous cases, hyper-viscous cases can attain better separated inertial range, thus facilitating the estimation of the energy cascade rates. We find that the widespread use of the isotropic form of the third-order law in estimating the energy transfer rates is questionable in some cases, especially when the anisotropy arising from the mean magnetic field is inevitable. In contrast, the direction-averaged third-order structure function properly accounts for the effect of anisotropy and predicts the energy transfer rates and inertial range accurately, even at very high $B_0$. With limited statistics, the third-order structure function shows a stronger dependence on averaging of azimuthal angles than the time, especially for high $B_0$ cases. These findings provide insights into the anisotropic effect on the estimation of energy transfer rates.

Seed coat colour in adzuki bean is an important quality trait and closely associated with anthocyanin metabolism pathways. To further understand the inheritance of seed coat colour pattern, the inheritance between multiple seed coat colours and ivory seed were analysed using F1:2, F2:3 and F3:4 populations derived from five bi-parental crosses. The differences between ivory and red mottle on ivory are controlled by a single recessive R locus and RI locus, respectively. Green, light brown and golden are all dominant to red and governed by two loci. The B (brown) locus shows dominant epistasis over T locus. The R (red) locus was recessive epistasis to B (black), T (light brown), G (golden), GR (green) and RI (red mottle on ivory) loci. The new insight into the strong recessive epistasis of the R locus will be important for gene mapping and cloning, candidate gene functional validation and quality improvement in adzuki bean.

The mean flow behaviour of a turbulent boundary layer over rough walls is expected to exhibit symmetries that govern the flow dynamics. In particular, when roughness elements are arranged in a spanwise symmetric manner, the mean flow above them should also exhibit spanwise symmetry. This symmetrical consideration has garnered substantial empirical support. We conduct direct numerical simulations (DNS) of flow over aligned cube arrays to test such symmetry considerations further. We vary the surface coverage density from 0.25 % to 6.25 %, and employ an averaging time of about 100 large-eddy turnover times, which is longer than the typical averaging time in prior DNS studies of rough-wall boundary layers. The results suggest the presence of spanwise asymmetry in the mean flow. Specifically, we observe the development of a prominent secondary vortex on one side of the cubical roughness, accompanied by a relatively smaller secondary vortex on the other side. This asymmetry becomes most pronounced when the surface coverage density is approximately 0.59 %, and diminishes as the coverage density approaches either a low or a high value. We also establish that this mean flow asymmetry is robust across variations in the domain size, the initial condition, and the placement of the cubes in the spanwise direction.

Adsorption of nanoparticles on minerals affects the fate and transport of nanoparticles directly and is of great significance to many fields, including research into ore deposits, geochemistry, the environment and mineral materials. Whereas many previous studies have been conducted under the equilibrium pH and low solid (mineral) to liquid (nanoparticle suspension) ratio conditions, adsorption processes under initial pH and high solid/liquid ratio conditions may represent many important yet underexamined complex scenarios. To fill in this research gap, the adsorption of gold nanoparticles on illite was investigated experimentally at a relatively high solid/liquid ratio of 5 g L–1 and the effects of initial pH, ionic strength, citrate concentration, temperature and illite particle size were evaluated. The adsorbed amount of gold nanoparticles (from <5% to nearly 100%) increased with increasing ionic strength, temperature and citrate concentration and decreased with increasing pH and illite particle size. The presence of illite resulted in the dynamic evolution of the pH of the suspension, which, along with solution chemistry parameters, controlled the electrostatic interaction of illite and gold nanoparticles. The adsorption results, scanning electron microscopy observations and surface properties of illite suggest that the negatively charged gold nanoparticles were adsorbed predominantly on the positive illite edges through electrostatic interaction. The electrostatic attraction between illite and gold nanoparticles appeared to be strong, supported by the minor amount of desorption. These research findings are expected to provide a valuable reference regarding many critical issues in the geosciences as well as for industrial applications.

In Beijing, the capital of China, routine measles mass vaccination has been in place for decades with high coverage; and since the 2000s, catch-up vaccination programmes have been implemented for migrant workers coming to the city. However, measles epidemics in Beijing persisted. Here, we explored the contributing factors of persistent measles transmission in Beijing using an epidemic model in conjunction with a particle filter. Model inputs included data on birth, death, migration, and vaccination. We formulated a series of hypotheses covering the impact of migrant influx, early waning of maternal immunity, and increased mixing among infants; we compared the plausibility of the hypotheses based on model fit to age-grouped, weekly measles incidence data from January 2005 to December 2014, and out-of-fit prediction during 2015–2019. Our best models showed close agreement with the data, and the out-of-fit prediction generally captured the trend of measles incidence from 2015 to 2019. We found that large influx of migrants with considerably higher susceptibility likely contributed to the persistent measles transmission in Beijing. Our findings suggest that stronger catch-up vaccination programmes for migrants may help eliminate measles transmission in Beijing.

Nonlinear compression has become an obligatory technique along with the development of ultrafast lasers in generating ultrashort pulses with narrow pulse widths and high peak power. In particular, techniques of nonlinear compression have experienced a rapid progress as ytterbium (Yb)-doped lasers with pulse widths in the range from hundreds of femtoseconds to a few picoseconds have become mainstream laser tools for both scientific and industrial applications. Here, we report a simple and stable nonlinear pulse compression technique with high efficiency through cascaded filamentation in air followed by dispersion compensation. Pulses at a center wavelength of 1040 nm with millijoule pulse energy and 160 fs pulse width from a high-power Yb:CaAlGdO4 regenerative amplifier are compressed to 32 fs, with only 2.4% loss from the filamentation process. The compressed pulse has a stable output power with a root-mean-square variation of 0.2% over 1 hour.

The target backsheath field acceleration mechanism is one of the main mechanisms of laser-driven proton acceleration (LDPA) and strongly depends on the comprehensive performance of the ultrashort ultra-intense lasers used as the driving sources. The successful use of the SG-II Peta-watt (SG-II PW) laser facility for LDPA and its applications in radiographic diagnoses have been manifested by the good performance of the SG-II PW facility. Recently, the SG-II PW laser facility has undergone extensive maintenance and a comprehensive technical upgrade in terms of the seed source, laser contrast and terminal focus. LDPA experiments were performed using the maintained SG-II PW laser beam, and the highest cutoff energy of the proton beam was obviously increased. Accordingly, a double-film target structure was used, and the maximum cutoff energy of the proton beam was up to 70 MeV. These results demonstrate that the comprehensive performance of the SG-II PW laser facility was improved significantly.

Coastal eutrophication and hypoxia remain a persistent environmental crisis despite the great efforts to reduce nutrient loading and mitigate associated environmental damages. Symptoms of this crisis have appeared to spread rapidly, reaching developing countries in Asia with emergences in Southern America and Africa. The pace of changes and the underlying drivers remain not so clear. To address the gap, we review the up-to-date status and mechanisms of eutrophication and hypoxia in global coastal oceans, upon which we examine the trajectories of changes over the 40 years or longer in six model coastal systems with varying socio-economic development statuses and different levels and histories of eutrophication. Although these coastal systems share common features of eutrophication, site-specific characteristics are also substantial, depending on the regional environmental setting and level of social-economic development along with policy implementation and management. Nevertheless, ecosystem recovery generally needs greater reduction in pressures compared to that initiated degradation and becomes less feasible to achieve past norms with a longer time anthropogenic pressures on the ecosystems. While the qualitative causality between drivers and consequences is well established, quantitative attribution of these drivers to eutrophication and hypoxia remains difficult especially when we consider the social economic drivers because the changes in coastal ecosystems are subject to multiple influences and the cause–effect relationship is often non-linear. Such relationships are further complicated by climate changes that have been accelerating over the past few decades. The knowledge gaps that limit our quantitative and mechanistic understanding of the human-coastal ocean nexus are identified, which is essential for science-based policy making. Recognizing lessons from past management practices, we advocate for a better, more efficient indexing system of coastal eutrophication and an advanced regional earth system modeling framework with optimal modules of human dimensions to facilitate the development and evaluation of effective policy and restoration actions.

We investigate the energy transport and heat transfer efficiency in turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard (RB) convection laden with radiatively heated inertial particles. Direct numerical simulations combined with the Lagrangian point-particle mode were carried out in the range of density ratio $854.7\le \rho _p/\rho _0 \le 8547$ and radiation intensity $1\le \phi /\phi _{solar}\le 100$ for both two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) simulations. The Rayleigh number ranges from $2\times 10^6$ to $10^8$ for 2-D cases, and is $10^7$ for 3-D cases for $Pr=0.71$. It is found that particles with small density ratio that encounter strong radiation significantly alter the flow momentum transport and fluid heat transfer, so the fluid temperature of bulk is remarkably heated. We then derived the theoretical relation of the Nusselt number for interphase heat transfer in the heated particle-laden RB convection, which reveals that the heat transfer difference between the top and bottom plates stems from the interphase heat transfer. We further found that both the interphase heat transfer and the interphase thermal energy transport exhibit universal properties. They are both increased linearly with the reciprocal of the normalized density ratio. Additionally, both the interphase heat transfer and the interphase thermal energy transport increase linearly with the increase of radiation intensity. The growth rates exhibit specific scaling relations versus Rayleigh number and density ratio. Two different regimes distinguished by the critical density ratio, i.e. the exothermic particle regime and the endothermic particle regime, are observed. We further derived the power-law relation of the critical density ratios versus Rayleigh number and radiation intensity, i.e. $\rho _p/\rho _c \sim (\phi /\phi _{solar})^{1/2}\,Ra^{1/3}$, which is in remarkable agreement with the 3-D simulations.

The mixing-layer analogy is due to Raupach, Finnigan & Brunet (Boundary-Layer Meteorol., vol. 25, 1996, pp. 351–382). In the analogy, the flow in the roughness sublayer of a homogeneous deep vegetation canopy boundary layer is analogous to a plane mixing layer rather than a surface layer. Evidence for the analogy includes the inflected velocity profile, which resembles the velocity profile in a plane mixing layer, and, most notably, the following estimate as a result of the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability: $\varLambda _x=8.1L_s$, where $\varLambda _x$ is the spacing of the large-scale eddies, and $L_s$ is the shear length. The mixing-layer analogy has been very successful in vegetation canopy flow research, but has received only limited support in urban-canopy flow research. This work revisits Raupach et al.'s mixing-layer analogy, and we present the evidence for the mixing-layer analogy in urban-canopy flows: the exponential velocity profile in the canopy layer, i.e. $(U-U_c)/(U_h-U_c)=\exp (z/L_m)$, and $L_m\sim [(U_h/U_c-1)(U_h/U_c+3)]^{-1}$. Here, $z$ is the vertical coordinate, $L_m$ is the attenuation length and is a measure of the largest eddy in the canopy layer, $U_h$ is the wind speed at the canopy crest and $U_c$ is the velocity in the inactive layer. We conduct direct numerical simulations of various deep homogeneous urban-canopy flows and test the above two scalings. We also discuss why Raupach et al.'s analogy has not seen as many successes in urban-canopy flows as in vegetation canopy flows.

Dietary modification plays a vital role in the treatment of non-alcoholic liver diseases. We investigated the effects of the consumption of a different amount of dehulled adlay, which has hypolipidaemic and anti-inflammatory properties, on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We fed rats a high-fat-high-fructose liquid diet for 16 weeks to induce NAFLD. The rats were divided into three groups fed the NAFLD diet only (NN) or a diet containing 44·9 or 89·8 g/l of dehulled adlay (NA and NB groups, respectively). After 8 weeks, the NA and NB groups had lower C-reactive protein levels and improvement in insulin resistance. In addition, the NB group had lower liver weight and hepatic TAG and cholesterol concentrations than did the NN group. Compared with the NN group, the high-dose NB group had improved steatosis, lower hepatic TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-6 levels and lower adipose leptin levels. Our results suggest that a diet containing dehulled adlay can ameliorate NAFLD progression by decreasing of insulin resistance, steatosis and inflammation.

We study the decay of compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, emphasizing exchanges of energy between compressive and incompressive kinetic energies, magnetic energy, and thermal energy. A recently developed high order finite difference code is employed for compressible runs with a Mach number up to 2. Varying the nature of the initial conditions (magnitudes of velocity and magnetic fluctuations), and initial Mach numbers permits examination of various dynamical regimes characterized here by the changes between different energy reservoirs. Acoustic waves are responsible for the oscillatory exchange between compressive kinetic and thermal energy through the pressure dilatation term. The results indicate that exchange between kinetic and magnetic energy is dominated by interactions involving the solenoidal velocity. Several systematic rapid adjustments are found to be reproducible with simple scalings derived from the empirical data.

Seed coat colour is an important quality trait, domestication trait and morphological marker, and is closely associated with flavonoid and anthocyanin metabolism pathways. The seed coat colour of adzuki bean, an important legume crop, influences the processing quality of its paste, the commodity and its nutritional quality. In this study, the genetic relationships of seed coat colour were analysed using 12 hybridized combinations of F2 individuals and four F3 families derived from hybridized combinations between the accessions of eight seed coat colours. The loci of the colour traits were analysed based on phenotypes and using the chi-square test. Ivory colour is recessive to red and is controlled by a single R locus. Black, black mottle on grey, black mottle on red, light brown, golden and brown are all dominant to red. The phenotypes of black mottle on red, light brown, golden and brown are all controlled by a single genetic locus. Black mottle on grey is controlled by two loci. Black is controlled with two loci, and the black locus shows dominant epistasis to another locus. A genetic model of these seed coat colours was predicted. Our results will be important for gene mapping and cloning of seed coat colour characters and for providing further insight into the regulatory network of seed coat colour.

Visual tracking is an essential building block for target tracking and capture of the underwater vehicles. On the basis of remotely autonomous control architecture, this paper has proposed an improved kernelized correlation filter (KCF) tracker and a novel fuzzy controller. The model is trained to learn an online correlation filter from a plenty of positive and negative training samples. In order to overcome the influence from occlusion, the improved KCF tracker has been designed with an added self-discrimination mechanism based on system confidence uncertainty. The novel fuzzy logic tracking controller can automatically generate and optimize fuzzy rules. Through Q-learning algorithm, the fuzzy rules are acquired through the estimating value of each state action pairs. An S surface based fitness function has been designed for the improvement of learning based particle swarm optimization. Tank and channel experiments have been carried out to verify the proposed tracker and controller through pipe tracking and target grasp on the basis of designed open frame underwater vehicle.

High fibre intake is associated with reduced mortality risk in both general and chronic kidney disease populations. However, in dialysis patients, such data are limited. Therefore, the association between dietary fibre intake (DFI) and the risk of all-cause and CVD mortality was examined in this study. A total of 1044 maintenance haemodialysis (MHD) patients from eight outpatient dialysis centres in China were included in this study. Data on DFI were collected using 24-h dietary recalls for 3 d in a week and were normalised to actual dry weight. The study outcomes included all-cause and CVD mortality. Over a median of 46 months of follow-up, 354 deaths were recorded, of which 210 (59 %) were due to CVD. On assessing DFI as tertiles, the CVD mortality risk was significantly lower in patients in tertiles 2–3 (≥0·13 g/kg per d; hazard ratio (HR) 0·71; 95 % CI 0·51, 0·97) compared with those in tertile 1 (<0·13 g/kg per d). A similar but non-significant trend was found for the association between DFI (tertiles 2–3 v. tertile 1; HR 0·83; 95 % CI 0·64, 1·07) and all-cause mortality. In summary, higher DFI was associated with lower CVD mortality risk among Chinese MHD patients. This study emphasises the significance of DFI in MHD patients and provides information that is critical for the improvement of dietary guidelines for dialysis patients.
