Background: Eye movements reveal neurodegenerative disease processes due to overlap between oculomotor circuitry and disease-affected areas. Characterizing oculomotor behaviour in context of cognitive function may enhance disease diagnosis and monitoring. We therefore aimed to quantify cognitive impairment in neurodegenerative disease using saccade behaviour and neuropsychology. Methods: The Ontario Neurodegenerative Disease Research Initiative recruited individuals with neurodegenerative disease: one of Alzheimer’s disease, mild cognitive impairment, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson’s disease, or cerebrovascular disease. Patients (n=450, age 40-87) and healthy controls (n=149, age 42-87) completed a randomly interleaved pro- and anti-saccade task (IPAST) while their eyes were tracked. We explored the relationships of saccade parameters (e.g. task errors, reaction times) to one another and to cognitive domain-specific neuropsychological test scores (e.g. executive function, memory). Results: Task performance worsened with cognitive impairment across multiple diseases. Subsets of saccade parameters were interrelated and also differentially related to neuropsychology-based cognitive domain scores (e.g. antisaccade errors and reaction time associated with executive function). Conclusions: IPAST detects global cognitive impairment across neurodegenerative diseases. Subsets of parameters associate with one another, suggesting disparate underlying circuitry, and with different cognitive domains. This may have implications for use of IPAST as a cognitive screening tool in neurodegenerative disease.

Care-giving to older adults with disabilities could lead to relatively high levels of care-giving burden and low levels of life satisfaction among their family care-givers. However, there is a lack of research examining the role of care-giver wisdom in the above stress process model. This study examined the moderator role of wisdom in the relationship between care-giver burden and life satisfaction among family care-givers of disabled older adults in urban China. A multi-stage quota sampling method was used to recruit 789 disabled older adult–family care-giver dyads in Shanghai in 2013. The average age of older adults and their family care-givers was 84 and 63 years old, respectively. Multiple-group path analysis was conducted to examine the proposed hypotheses. The results showed that care-giver wisdom played a moderator role in the association between care-giver burden and life satisfaction. Care-giver burden was found to only negatively affect life satisfaction among care-givers with relatively low wisdom levels. The findings highlight the influences of care-giver wisdom on the relationship between burden and life satisfaction in Chinese contexts. The concept of wisdom should be used in needs assessment among family care-givers of older adults with disabilities. Future social interventions should focus on promoting care-givers' capacities of reflective thinking, their understandings of reality and their feelings of compassion.

The decision of whether to grow old in one's home (also referred to as ageing in place (AIP)) or relocating to an institution is an ongoing negotiation process, which involves residential decisions and adaptation. This research aims to explore how childless older adults in rural China choose between AIP and institutionalisation. Through a qualitative study conducted in rural China among childless older adults, we explored the reasons why they make certain residential choices and how they adapted during the decision process. Twenty-five childless participants (aged 60–83) were interviewed. Findings suggested that they referred to the term ku (literally meaning ‘bitterness’; and a metaphor referring to ‘conducting farming and farm-related activities’) to explain their residential decisions. If a person could endure ku – sustain food and basic living through farming and farm-related activities, they tended to choose to age in place; otherwise, they chose to relocate to institutions. Ku represents a sense of mastery, encompassing the stressfulness and suffering aspect that requires adaptation. Three adaptive strategies were identified: (a) positive reappraising of the negative aspect of ku, (b) routinising ku, and (c) transcending the narrative of ku into a toughness identity. Our findings suggest that childless older adults struggled to achieve residential mastery while making residential decisions, even though a sense of mastery was shaped by the individual and structural constrictions.

Population ageing in China calls for evidence-based solutions, especially in terms of fulfilling long-term care needs among frail older adults. Respite services are identified as effective resources for alleviating care-giver burden and promoting the wellbeing of both older adults and their family care-givers. However, respite care is often under-used in China. This research aimed to examine factors associated with intention to use respite services among informal care-givers in Shanghai, mainland China. This study was part of the Longitudinal Study on Family Caregivers for Frail Older Adults in Shanghai. Pairs of older adults and their care-givers (N = 583) who successfully completed the 2013 and 2016 waves were included in the data analysis. Two logistic regression models were conducted, one with time-invariant and one with time-variant factors. The model with time-variant factors had greater explanatory power than the original Andersen model with time-invariant factors influencing intention to use respite services among care-givers. Care-givers had higher odds of intending to use respite services if they had higher care-giving burden, were caring elderly people who experienced care-giver transitions, or were caring for elderly people with increased function of ambulation or decreased function of feeding. The findings imply that change in functional health was a significant determinant of intention to use respite care. Relevant policy and service implications will be discussed.

While assessing the environmental impact of nuclear power plants, researchers have focused their attention on radiocarbon (14C) owing to its high mobility in the environment and important radiological impact on human beings. The 10 MW high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTR-10) is the first pebble-bed gas-cooled test reactor in China that adopted helium as primary coolant and graphite spheres containing tristructural-isotropic (TRISO) coated particles as fuel elements. A series of experiments on the 14C source terms in HTR-10 was conducted: (1) measurement of the specific activity and distribution of typical nuclides in the irradiated graphite spheres from the core, (2) measurement of the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant, and (3) measurement of the amount of 14C discharged in the effluent from the stack. All experimental data on 14C available for HTR-10 were summarized and analyzed using theoretical calculations. A sensitivity study on the total porosity, open porosity, and percentage of closed pores that became open after irradiating the matrix graphite was performed to illustrate their effects on the activity concentration of 14C in the primary coolant and activity amount of 14C in various deduction routes.

The treatment of multiple sclerosis has finally become possible with the advent of the current disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) that have had a significant impact on those living with this disease. Though demonstrating clear efficacy on a number of short-term outcome measures, unfortunately, these agents are not “cures” and many patients with multiple sclerosis continue to experience disease activity in spite of treatment. Clinicians are becoming more comfortable initiating therapy with DMTs, but it is now important to focus attention on monitoring the results of the chosen therapy and deciding whether or not a patient is responding well to treatment. At present, however, clinicians lack criteria for defining optimal versus suboptimal responses to DMTs as well as evidence-based guidelines on how to improve treatment outcomes. Using a recently published model as a framework, The Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Working Group developed practical recommendations on how neurologists can assess the status of patients on DMTs and decide when it may be necessary to modify treatment in order to optimize outcomes. The Canadian Multiple Sclerosis Working Group's recommendations are based on monitoring relapses, neurological progression and MRI activity. Other possible causes of suboptimal treatment responses or treatment failure are also considered.

The trajectory of modern China, namely from dire poverty and communist fever to economic boom and marketisation under an authoritarian regime, makes the country a unique social laboratory for examining how social environment affects human development of individuals. This study investigated the correlation between childhood adversity and depressive symptoms of Chinese middle-aged and older adults, as well as how urbanisation moderates the correlation. A sub-sample (N = 14,681) of the baseline of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study was analysed. Seven variables were used in the latent class analysis to establish a childhood adversity typology. Three urbanisation statuses were identified according to the Hukou (household registration system) status and neighbourhood type: non-urbanised, semi-urbanised and fully urbanised. The correlation between childhood adversity and depressive symptoms and the moderation of urbanization on the correlation were assessed with factorial analysis of covariance. Three latent classes for childhood adversities were identified: ‘normal childhood class', ‘low childhood socio-economic status and health class' and ‘traumatic childhood class'. The class membership was significantly correlated with depressive symptoms (p = 0.015), and the urbanisation status, also significantly affecting depressive symptoms (p = 0.05), had significant moderating effect on the correlation (p = 0.002). It is suggested that more social inclusive policies need to be adopted in order to guarantee the equal distribution of wellbeing led by urbanisation.

Using an interdisciplinary model of financial planning, we investigated the factors contributing to perceived adequacy of retirement savings among Hong Kong workers by replicating a previous study of American and Dutch workers. The model was also tested for age differences in the way in which the variables operated within the model. These questions were examined using data from a phone survey conducted with 999 Hong Kong workers in 2012. We examined three psychological factors (future time orientation, goal clarity and financial knowledge), three social support variables (early learning from parents, spousal support and friend support) and three institutional factors (quality of employer pensions, trust in banks and fund managers, and trust in the government), as well as retirement savings planning activity and perceived retirement savings adequacy. Path analyses were used to test the model for the whole sample and separately for younger (N=437) and older (N=562) workers. Although a few age differences were found in the path analyses, the model was found to be useful in explaining the factors contributing to retirement savings planning and practices. Finally, we discuss how our findings differ from those of prior studies, and we assess their theoretical and practical implications.

A novel borate compound Ba3ScB9O18 has been synthesized by solid-state reaction and its structure has been determined and refined from powder X-ray diffraction data. This compound crystallizes in a hexagonal cell (space group P63/m) with lattice parameters a=7.1360(4) Å and c=16.5420(9) Å, and each unit cell contains two formulas. Its crystal structure is made up of planar B3O6 groups parallel to each other along the [001] direction, regular ScO6 octahedra, irregular BaO6 hexagons, and BaO9 polyhedra to form an analogue structure of Ba3YB9O18. DTA and TGA curves for Ba3ScB9O18 show that it is a chemically stable and congruent melting compound. Luminescence properties for Ba3ScB9O18 were investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy and X-ray excited luminescence measurements. Its emission spectrum upon UV excitation (330 nm) has exhibited a prominent blue-green emission band at about 490 nm, and its XEL spectra show an intense emission band in the range of 360 to 500 nm with peak center at 400 nm. The light yield of Ba3ScB9O18 powders is about 23% as large as that of BGO powders under the same measurement conditions. There seems to be a certain relationship between the scintillation properties and the structural features of Ba3ScB9O18.

Crystal structure of 4H-SiC was refined from room-temperature X-ray powder diffraction data using the Rietveld refinement method. The refined lattice constants were determined to be a=b=3.079 93(0) Å, c=10.082 22(2) Å, and the refined overall temperature factor B=0.383(3) Å2. Using the Debye approximation, the Debye temperature was successfully determined to be 1194.8 K.

New compounds Li6MB3O9 (M=Nd,Sm,Eu,Tm,Er) were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The crystal structure of Li6NdB3O9 was analyzed from both powder and single crystal X-ray diffraction data. The results obtained by powder diffraction analysis and Rietveld refinement are a=7.2725(4) Å, b=16.6398(9) Å, c=6.7529(5) Å, β=105.398(8)°, and space group P21/c, which agree with the results obtained by single crystal diffraction analysis: a=7.2712(4) Å, b=16.6268(9) Å, c=6.7484(4) Å, β=105.411(1)°, and space group P21/c. This compound is isostructural with Li6YB3O9. Single crystal structure analysis showed that the fundamental building unit of these isostructural compounds comprises three isolated [BO3]3− triangles, one distorted [NdO8]13− triangulated dodecahedron, four distorted [LiO5]9− five-coordinated polyhedra, and two [LiO4]7− tetrahedron. An analysis of the infrared spectrum of Li6NdB3O9 confirmed the presence of isolated [BO3]3− triangles in Li6NdB3O9. The remaining four Li6MB3O9 (M=Nd, Sm, Eu, Tm, and Er) compounds were found to be isostructural with Li6NdB3O9. Their unit cell dimensions decrease with an increase in the atomic number of the rare-earth atoms. DTA and TGA measurements of Li6MB3O9 (M=Nd, Sm, Eu, Tm, and Er) revealed that these borates congruently melt from 800 °C to 860 °C.

The effects of transverse rotation on the dynamics of a droplet released into a uniform free stream are numerically investigated. The range of the dimensionless rotation rate is limited to , to avoid any possibility of the droplet breaking up. Droplet dynamics and deformations undergo distinct changes when the dimensionless rotational rate reaches a critical value. The critical rotational rate is sensitive to the change in the density ratio, but less dependent on the viscosity ratio and interfacial tension. Below , the droplet drag coefficients are reduced marginally as the effect of the rotation is quickly suppressed by the free stream. Above , the drag coefficients decrease initially as the rotation effect dominates at earlier times, resulting in a global minimum. The drag coefficients increase monotonically at later times, when the rotation effects decrease and the free-stream effects become dominant. The only exception is with the increase in the viscosity ratio and the surface tension, which either inhibits droplet deformation or restores the droplet to a more spherical shape in the late stages of droplet evolution. The droplet also experiences lift due to the effects of the transverse rotation. It is observed that the lift coefficients are less dependent on the droplet frontal area as the lift is generated by the velocity difference between the upper and lower interface. In general, the lift coefficients increase with at earlier times and decrease at later times as the difference in the velocity between the upper and lower interface decreases. In some extreme cases, the lift coefficients even become negative.

To characterize the developmental trajectory for expressive language representation and to test competing explanations for the relative neuroplasticity of language in childhood, we studied 28 healthy children and adolescents (aged 5–19 years) participating in a covert verb generation task in magnetoencephalography. Lateralization of neuromagnetic responses in the frontal lobe was quantified using a bootstrap statistical thresholding procedure for differential beamformer analyses. We observed a significant positive correlation between left hemisphere lateralization and age. Findings suggest that adult-typical left hemisphere lateralization emerges from an early bilateral language network, which may explain the pediatric advantage for interhemispheric plasticity of language. Among those who present to the emergency department for self-harm, many will repeat. Self-harm repetition is an outcome of interest in both observational and intervention studies. However, few such studies analyse the number of repeat self-harm presentations. Here, hurdle models are introduced as a potentially useful statistical method for these analyses. Emergency department data from the Province of Ontario, Canada, are used to illustrate an example of implementing hurdle models and interpreting their results.

This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the indentation size effects at the nano, sub-micron, and micron-scales. The size dependence of the indentation hardness in these regimes is shown to exhibit a bi-linear behavior when the data are fitted to Taylor Dislocation Hardening (TDH) model. The deformation in indent sizes corresponding to the onset of the transition from micro and deep nano indents to shallow nano indents represent dislocation substructures at the sub-micron and micron scales whereas the deformation at the nano-scale represents dislocation source-limited behavior.
