An analytical model is developed which explores the impact of irregular sea-floor roughness on large-scale oceanic flows. The previously reported asymptotic ‘sandpaper’ theory of flow-topography interaction represents relatively swift currents and exhibits singular behaviour in the weak flow limit. The present investigation systematically spans a wider parameter space and identifies the principal dissimilarities in the topographic regulation of slow and fast currents. The fast flows are controlled by the Reynolds stresses produced by topographically generated eddies. In contrast, relatively weak flows are more affected by the eddy-induced bottom form drag. The asymptotic models for fast and slow currents are then combined to arrive at a concise description of flow forcing by small-scale topography in homogeneous and multilayer models. The proposed closure is validated by comparing corresponding topography-resolving and parametric simulations.

This study explores the impact of small-scale variability in the bottom relief on the dynamics and evolution of broad baroclinic flows in the ocean. The analytical model presented here generalizes the previously reported barotropic ‘sandpaper’ theory of flow–topography interaction to density-stratified systems. The multiscale asymptotic analysis leads to an explicit representation of the large-scale effects of irregular bottom roughness. The utility of the multiscale model is demonstrated by applying it to the problem of topography-induced spin-down of an axisymmetric vortex. We find that bathymetry affects vortices by suppressing circulation in their deep regions. As a result, vortices located above rough topography tend to be more stable than their flat-bottom counterparts. The multiscale theory is validated by comparing corresponding topography-resolving and parametric simulations.

This study examines the impact of small-scale irregular topographic features on the dynamics and evolution of large-scale barotropic flows in the ocean. A multiscale theory is developed, which makes it possible to represent large-scale effects of the bottom roughness without explicitly resolving small-scale variability. The analytical model reveals that the key mechanism of topographic control involves the generation of a small-scale eddy field associated with considerable Reynolds stresses. These eddy stresses are inversely proportional to the large-scale velocity and adversely affect mean circulation patterns. The multiscale model is applied to the problem of topography-induced spin-down of a large circularly symmetric vortex and is validated by corresponding topography-resolving simulations. The small-scale bathymetry chosen for this configuration conforms to the Goff–Jordan statistical spectrum. While the multiscale model formally assumes a substantial separation between the scales of interacting flow components, it is remarkably accurate even when scale separation is virtually non-existent.

This study examines the long-wavelength instabilities of an inviscid parallel time-dependent current on the beta-plane. The basic flow is represented by the Kolmogorov pattern, the amplitude of which is modulated in time. Particular attention is given to the regime in which the corresponding steady flows are stable according to the Rayleigh–Kuo criterion. It is shown that the presence of a fluctuating component, regardless of how weak it may be, always renders the basic current linearly unstable. The destabilization is attributed to the resonant forcing of large-scale Rossby waves. The analysis is based on the asymptotic multiscale model, which is validated by numerical simulations. Since most geophysical flows are inherently time-dependent, the associated shear instabilities could represent a significant and ubiquitous source of barotropic turbulence.

This study explores the long-term impact of a weak initial departure from circular symmetry in coherent equivalent-barotropic vortices on their dynamics and evolution. An algorithm is developed which makes it possible to construct models of vortices that initially propagate with prescribed velocity. These solutions are used as the initial conditions for a series of numerical simulations. Simulations indicate that seemingly minor perturbations of dipolar form can control the propagation of vortices for extended periods, during which they translate over distances greatly exceeding their size. The numerical results are contrasted with the linear model, which assumes that the non-axisymmetric component of circulation in the vortex interior is relatively weak. The linear solutions reflect the self-propagation tendencies of coherent vortices to a much lesser degree, which underscores the role of fundamentally nonlinear mechanisms at play. The remarkable ability of quasi-monopolar vortices to retain the memory of weak initial perturbations helps to rationalize the wide range of the observed propagation velocities of coherent long-lived vortices in the ocean.

This study presents a class of steadily translating two-dimensional approximately circular vortices. The proposed solutions take the form of a superposition of two nearly concentric vorticity patches with zero net vorticity. Exact quasi-monopolar solutions of this type are found for propagation speeds that are much less than typical azimuthal velocities. While all V-states obtained are shown to be formally unstable, a large subset of configurations is characterized by very low growth rates. Fully nonlinear simulations reveal that such nearly stable eddies can propagate large distances from the point of origin while maintaining their structure and intensity. Therefore, the proposed solutions can serve as models of geophysical vortices that are known to drift relative to the ambient fluid, often exhibiting remarkable longevity and resilience to external perturbations.

This study attempts to quantify and explain the systematic weakening of internal gravity waves in fingering and diffusive thermohaline staircases. The interaction between waves and staircases is explored using a combination of direct numerical simulations (DNS) and an asymptotic multiscale model. The multiscale theory makes it possible to express the wave decay rate $({\lambda _d})$ as a function of its wavenumbers and staircase parameters. We find that the decay rates in fully developed staircases greatly exceed values that can be directly attributed to molecular dissipation. They rapidly increase with increasing wavenumbers, both vertical and horizontal. At the same time, ${\lambda _d}$ is only weakly dependent on the thickness of layers in the staircase, the overall density ratio and the diffusivity ratio. The proposed physical mechanism of attenuation emphasizes the significance of eddy diffusion of temperature and salinity, whereas eddy viscosity plays a secondary role in damping internal waves. The asymptotic model is successfully validated by the DNS performed in numerically accessible regimes. We also discuss potential implications of staircase-induced suppression for diapycnal mixing by overturning internal waves in the ocean.

This study explores the control of mesoscale variability by topographic features with lateral scales that are less than the scale of the eddies generated by baroclinic instability. These dynamics are described using a combination of numerical simulations and an asymptotic multiscale model. The multiscale method makes it possible to express the system dynamics by a closed set of equations written entirely in terms of mesoscale variables, thereby providing a physical basis for the development of submesoscale parameterization schemes. The submesoscale topography is shown to influence such fundamental properties of mesoscale variability as the meridional eddy-induced transport and eddy kinetic energy. It is argued that the adverse influence of submesoscale topography on baroclinic instability is ultimately caused by the homogenization tendency of potential vorticity in the bottom density layer. The multiscale model formally assumes a substantial separation between the scales of interacting flow components. However, the comparison of asymptotic solutions with their submesoscale-resolving numerical counterparts indicates that the multiscale method is remarkably accurate even when scale separation is virtually non-existent.

A theoretical model is developed which illustrates the dynamics of layering instability, frequently realized in ocean regions with active fingering convection. Thermohaline layering is driven by the interplay between large-scale stratification and primary double-diffusive instabilities operating at the microscale – temporal and spatial scales set by molecular dissipation. This interaction is described by a combination of direct numerical simulations and an asymptotic multiscale model. The multiscale theory is used to formulate explicit and dynamically consistent flux laws, which can be readily implemented in large-scale analytical and numerical models. Most previous theoretical investigations of thermohaline layering were based on the flux-gradient model, which assumes that the vertical transport of density components is uniquely determined by their local background gradients. The key deficiency of this approach is that layering instabilities predicted by the flux-gradient model have unbounded growth rates at high wavenumbers. The resulting ultraviolet catastrophe precludes the analysis of such basic properties of layering instability as its preferred wavelength or the maximal growth rate. The multiscale model, on the other hand, incorporates hyperdiffusion terms that stabilize short layering modes. Overall, the presented theory carries the triple advantage of (i) offering an explicit description of the interaction between microstructure and layering modes, (ii) taking into account the influence of non-uniform stratification on microstructure-driven mixing, and (iii) avoiding unphysical behaviour of the flux-gradient laws at small scales. While the multiscale approach to the parametrization of time-dependent small-scale processes is illustrated here on the example of fingering convection, we expect the proposed technique to be readily adaptable to a wide range of applications.

The Arctic halocline is generally stable to the development of double-diffusive and dynamic instabilities – the two major sources of small-scale mixing in the mid-latitude oceans. Despite this, observations show the abundance of double-diffusive staircases in the Arctic Ocean, which suggests the presence of some destabilizing process facilitating the transition from smooth-gradient to layered stratification. Recent studies have shown that an instability can develop in such circumstances if weak static shear is present even when the flow is dynamically and diffusively stable. However, the impact of oscillating shear, associated with the presence of internal gravity waves, has not yet been addressed for the diffusive case. Through two-dimensional simulations of diffusive convection, we have investigated the impact of the magnitude and frequency of externally forced oscillatory shear on the thermohaline-shear instability. Simulations with stochastic shear – characterized by a continuous spectrum of frequencies from inertial to buoyancy – indicate that thermohaline layering does occur due to the presence of destabilizing modes (oscillations of near the buoyancy frequency). These simulations show that such layers appear as well-defined steps in the temperature and salinity profiles. Thus, the thermohaline-shear instability is a plausible mechanism for staircase formation in the Arctic and merits substantial future study.

A theoretical model is developed which illustrates the dynamics of the spontaneous generation of large-scale structures in baroclinically unstable eddying flows. Techniques of asymptotic multiscale analysis are used to identify instabilities resulting from the positive feedback of the background eddies on large-scale perturbations. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in the choice of a dynamically consistent time-dependent background eddy field, which is taken from simulations of baroclinic instability in the Phillips two-layer system. The resulting solutions differ considerably from those of traditional multiscale models, in which the background eddy field is represented by steady analytical patterns. The present formulation makes it possible to (i) test the multiscale theory against the corresponding numerical simulations, (ii) unambiguously interpret the key physical processes at play and (iii) rationalize the emergence of large-scale patterns for certain background parameters. While the proposed approach to multiscale modelling is illustrated on a particular example of the Phillips baroclinic instability model, it is our belief that the presented technique is readily adaptable to a wide range of applications.

In this study we examine two-component shear flows that are stable with respect to Kelvin–Helmholtz and to double-diffusive instabilities individually. Our focus is on diffusively stratified ocean regions, where relatively warm and salty water masses are located below cool fresh ones. It is shown that such systems may be destabilized by the interplay between shear and thermohaline effects, caused by unequal molecular diffusivities of density components. Linear stability analysis suggests that parallel two-component flows can be unstable for Richardson numbers exceeding the critical value for non-dissipative systems $(Ri=1/4)$ by up to four orders of magnitude. Direct numerical simulations indicate that these instabilities transform the initially linear density stratification into a series of well-defined horizontal layers. It is hypothesized that the combined thermohaline–shear instabilities could be ultimately responsible for the widespread occurrence of thermohaline staircases in diffusively stable regions of the World Ocean.

Double-diffusive flux-gradient laws are commonly used to describe the development of large-scale structures driven by salt fingers – thermohaline staircases, collective instability waves and intrusions. The flux-gradient model assumes that the vertical transport is uniquely determined by the local background temperature and salinity gradients. While flux-gradient laws adequately capture mixing characteristics on scales that greatly exceed those of primary double-diffusive instabilities, their accuracy rapidly deteriorates when the scale separation between primary and secondary instabilities is reduced. This study examines conditions for the breakdown of the flux-gradient laws using a combination of analytical arguments and direct numerical simulations. The applicability (failure) of the flux-gradient laws at large (small) scales is illustrated through the example of layering instability, which results in the spontaneous formation of thermohaline staircases from uniform temperature and salinity gradients. Our inquiry is focused on the properties of the ‘point-of-failure’ scale ($\def \xmlpi #1{}\def \mathsfbi #1{\boldsymbol {\mathsf {#1}}}\let \le =\leqslant \let \leq =\leqslant \let \ge =\geqslant \let \geq =\geqslant \def \Pr {\mathit {Pr}}\def \Fr {\mathit {Fr}}\def \Rey {\mathit {Re}}H_{pof}$) at which the vertical transport becomes significantly affected by the non-uniformity of the background stratification. It is hypothesized that $H_{pof} $ can control some key characteristics of secondary double-diffusive phenomena, such as the thickness of high-gradient interfaces in thermohaline staircases. A more general parametrization of the vertical transport – the flux-gradient-aberrancy law – is proposed, which includes the selective damping of relatively short wavelengths that are inadequately represented by the flux-gradient models. The new formulation is free from the unphysical behaviour of the flux-gradient laws at small scales (e.g. the ultraviolet catastrophe) and can be readily implemented in theoretical and large-scale numerical models of double-diffusive convection.
