Self-focusing of Gaussian laser beam has been investigated in quantum plasma under the effect of applied axial magnetic field. The nonlinear differential equation has been derived for studying the variations in the beam-width parameter. The effect of initial plasma electron temperature and the axial magnetic field on self-focusing and normalized intensity are studied. Our investigation reveals that normalized intensity increases to tenfolds where quantum effects are dominant. The normalized intensity further increases to twelvefolds on increasing the magnetic field.

This paper presents an investigation on the self-focusing of a cosh-Gaussian laser beam in the thermal quantum plasma (TQP) by taking into account the effects of relativistic nonlinearity. An appropriate nonlinear Schrödinger equation has been solved analytically by applying the variational approach. The self-focusing and the self-phase modulation are examined under a variety of parameters. The self-trapping of a cosh-Gaussian laser beam is further studied at various values of the decentered parameter, b with different absorption levels, ${k}^{\prime}_i$. Numerical analysis shows that these parameters play a vital role in propagation characteristics. The significant contribution of the quantum effects to enhance the self-focusing and minimize the longitudinal phase has been observed. Further, a comparison has been made with the classical relativistic (CR), the relativistic cold quantum (RCQ), and the thermal quantum (TQ) regimes. The self-focusing is found to occur earlier and is strongest for the case of TQP in the present analysis.

In the present paper, we have investigated self-focusing of the quadruple Gaussian laser beam in underdense cold quantum plasma. The non-linearity chosen is associated with the relativistic mass effect that arises due to quiver motion of electron and electron density perturbation caused by ponderomotive force. The non-linearity modifies the plasma frequency in the dielectric function and hence the refractive index of the medium. The focusing/defocusing of the quadruple laser depends on the refractive index of the medium. We have set up non-linear differential equation that controls the beam width parameter by using well-known paraxial ray approximation and Wentzel–Krammers–Brillouin approximation. The effect of intensity parameter and electron temperature is observed on laser beam self-focusing in the presence of cold quantum plasma. From the results, it is revealed that electron temperature and the initial intensity of the laser beam control the profile dynamics of the laser beam.

The paper presents an investigation on self-focusing of cosh-Gaussian (ChG) laser beam in a relativistic–ponderomotive non-uniform plasma. It is observed numerically that the selection of decentered parameter and initial beam radius determines the focusing/defocusing of ChG laser beam. For given value of these parameters, the plasma density ramp of suitable length can avoid defocusing and enhance focusing effect significantly. Focusing length and extent of focusing may also be controlled by varying slope of the ramp density. A comparison with Gaussian beam has also been attempted for optimized set of parameters. The results establish that ChG beam focuses earlier and sharper relative to Gaussian beam. We have setup the non-linear differential equation for the beam width parameter using Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin and paraxial ray approximation and solved it numerically using Runge–Kutta method.

This paper presents an investigation of a self-consistent, theoretical model, which explains the ring formation in a super-Gaussian laser beam propagating in plasma with transverse magnetic field, characterized by relativistic nonlinearity. Higher order terms (up to r4) in the expansion of the dielectric function and the eikonal have been taken into account. The condition for the formation of a dark and bright ring has been used to study focusing/defocusing of the beam. It is seen that inclusion of higher order terms does significantly affect the dependence of beam width parameter on the distance of propagation. Self-focusing of super-Gaussian beam is studied at various values of super-Gaussian coefficient, m and magnetic field. Further, we have studied some distinct features of critical power curves for varying values of magnetic field.

By using the standard reductive perturbation technique, a nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived to study the stability of finite amplitude ion-acoustic waves in an unmagnetized plasma consisting of warm positive and negative ions and non-thermal electrons. The effect of relative temperature of positive and negative ions, their charge and mass ratios, density ratios and non-thermally distributed electrons on modulational instability of fast and slow ion-acoustic mode is investigated. It is found that these parameters significantly change the domain of modulation instability. Both, envelope and dark solitons appear in different regions of parameter space.

In this paper, we have investigated the propagation characteristics of cosh-Gaussian laser beam in magnetoplasma using relativistic nonlinearity. The field distribution in the medium is expressed in terms of beam width parameter an and decentred parameter b. An appropriate nonlinear Schräodinger equation has been solved analytically using variational approach. The behaviour of beam width parameter with dimensionless distance of propagation ξ for various b values is examined. Self-phase modulation and self-trapping is also studied under variety of parameters. Further, the effect of magnetic field on self-focusing of the beam have been explored.

In the present research paper, the characteristics of dust-acoustic solitary waves (DASWs) and double layers (DLs) are studied. Ions are treated as non-thermal and variable dust charge is considered. The Korteweg–de Vries equation is derived using a reductive perturbation method. It is noticed that compressive solitons are obtained up to a certain range of relative density δ (=ni0/ne0) beyond which rarefactive solitons are observed. The study is further extended to investigate the possibility of DLs. Only compressive DLs are permissible. Both DASWs and DLs are sensitive to variation of the non-thermal parameter.

The problem of nonlinear self-focusing of elliptic Gaussian laser beam in collisionless magnetized plasma is studied using variation approach. The dynamics of the combined effects of nonlinearity and spatial diffraction is presented. With a and b as the beam width parameters of the beam along x and y directions, respectively, the phenomenon of cross-focusing is observed where focusing of a results in defocusing of b and vice versa. Although no stationary self-trapping is observed, oscillatory self-trapping occurs far below the threshold. The regularized phase is always negative.

The effect on the propagation of ion-acoustic solitons and double layers has been studied in collisionless weakly relativistic plasma consisting of two-electron temperature with isothermal electrons and finite ion temperature. The Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation is derived for ion-acoustic solitons propagating in a collisionless plasma. This equation is solved in a stationary frame to obtain the expression for soliton phase velocity, soliton width and peak soliton amplitude. It is observed that these quantities are significantly influenced by the relativistic effect, ion temperature, low-temperature electron density and ratio of cold to hot electron temperatures. Many features expected from hot ion theory and two species electron plasmas automatically emerge. The analysis is further extended to higher order nonlinearity and modified Korteweg de-Vries (mKdV) equation is derived. Even though compressive and rarefactive ion-acoustic solitons are obtained, only rarefactive ion-acoustic double layers are obtained in the present investigation.

In this paper, the characteristics of dust-acoustic solitary waves in dusty plasma are studied. Dust charge and temperature are treated as variables. The authors have used the pseudopotential method to investigate the possibility of compressive as well as rarefactive solitons. An expression for the pseudopotential has been derived. The pseudopotential is a function of the Mach number, the relative temperature of low and high ion components, the relative ion concentration of dust charge and the temperature. Numerical computation shows that for the chosen set of parameters, only compressive solitons exist and their amplitudes increase with increasing Mach number. An increase in the dust temperature results in the disappearance of the compressive soliton. It is the only small parameter regime where compressive as well rarefactive solitons coexist. The effect of the relative ion temperature on solitons is also investigated. In the small amplitude limit, an increase in the dust temperature leads to a transition from compressive to rarefactive solitons.

In the laser–plasma interaction experiments, self-focusing and filamentation affect quite a large number of other parametric processes including stimulated scattering processes. Nonlinearity considered in the present problem is the collisional type. The coupling between the main beam, ripple, and excited electron plasma wave is strong. Authors have investigated the growing interaction of a rippled laser beam with an electron plasma wave leading to enhanced Raman scattering. An expression for scattered power is derived and the effect of the externally applied magnetic field on the enhancement of scattered power is observed. From computational results, it is observed that the effect of increased intensity of the main beam leads to suppression of power associated with the Raman scattered wave.

Self-focusing is one of the key issues in laser plasma physics applications. Problems involving a multidimensional beam within an inhomogeneous plasma are diffficult to handle. This paper presents the investigation of two-dimensional self-focusing of a laser beam in a plasma whose density n(r, z) is a function of radial as well as z coordinates. The nonlinear mechanism responsible for modification of the background density and the dielectric function is of ponderomotive type. A variational technique is used here for deriving the equations for the beam width and the longitudinal phase. It is observed numerically that an initially diffracting beam is accompanied by oscillatory self-focusing of the beam with distance of propagation. The effect of inhomogeneity scale lengths is also observed. The increase in Lr (= L∥/L⊥) results in oscillatory self-focusing and defocusing with distance of propagation. Furthermore, critical fields for self-trapping of a laser beam as a function of refraction, diffraction lengths and scale lengths of inhomogeneities are also evaluated. Lastly, whatever parameters are chosen, the phase is always negative.
