The Pleasure of Thinking

  • Tania Zittoun demonstrates that there is pleasure in thinking, and that the pleasure of thinking plays a key role in our lives – in the development of children, in learning, in adult life, and in ageing. Drawing on arts and philosophy, exploring research in developmental psychology, cultural psychology, and psychoanalysis, it highlights five modalities of thinking: curiosity, the functional pleasure of pursuing a task, the pleasure of discovery, the dialogical pleasure of thinking with others, and a meta-pleasure. This book proposes a unique integrative model of thinking, conceived as a situated activity, following trajectories that combine modalities of pleasure. Evolving with time, the pleasure of thinking can take place as we reason, make sense, or daydream, at school, at work, when we garden, or do science. Academics and graduate students in sociocultural, critical, developmental, and cognitive psychology will benefit from The Pleasure of Thinking.

    Identity is a dynamic. It changes across time and contexts. This presents a methodological challenge because established methods (interviews, surveys, experiments) are not ideal for tracking people across time and as they move between contexts. Increasingly, however, people leave textual traces of their identity in diaries and letters, that document changing identities across time and place. Since ancient Greece, autobiographical writings (letters, confessionals, diaries) have been a literary technique for people to explore and display their identities; subsequently, such self-writings offer researchers precious access to the situated and dynamic identities of others. We approach identity from a developmental, sociocultural, and dialogical perspective, and we thus consider diaries, letters, and blogs as providing a precious window on the development of identity. Specifically, we conceptualize self-writings as simultaneously an externalization of a person’s experience and a reflection upon her experience, addressed to real or imaginary audiences. Based on a ideographic study of diaries, we will show both how the development of subjective identity can be traced through time, as the diarist moves through real and imaginary spaces. Such analysis, we argue, demands both a careful, theoretically informed examination of form and content of texts, and the reconstitution of the environment in which these texts have been produced. Finally, we discuss new directions for the study of identity through increasingly diverse forms self-writing, such as online diaries, emails, text messages, letters, and social media.

    This chapter outlines a sociocultural approach to imagination, an approach that considers imagination at once as an individual and cultural phenomenon, grounded in our embodied experience of the world, in social interactions, and in the use of symbolic resources. We begin by reviewing the classical philosophical debates about the nature of imagination – whether it is based on images or experience and whether it is primarily personal or cultural – in order to position the sociocultural framework that builds on the seminal work of Lev Vygotsky. Following this, we review old and recent sociocultural research in this area, focusing on four main issues: imagination and perception, the phenomenology of art experience, intentionality and imagination, and the imagination as generative. We conclude the chapter with an integrative model – the imagination loop – and a discussion of how imagination plays a fundamental role not only for individual development but also the development of society through the construction of collective futures.

    This chapter approaches revolution as sociopolitical phenomena, defined as “any major social and political transformation, sufficient to replace old institutions and social relations, and to initiate new relations of power and authority” (Blackburn, 2014). What can a social and culturally sensitive psychology say about such phenomenon? It invites us to consider people within their webs of social relationships, as they interact with material and symbolic objects, in specific social and cultural settings, as well as their relation to less visible cultural phenomena such as fiction and religion. A sociopolitical revolution is, from that perspective, simply another type of cultural phenomena (Valsiner, 2014c). As any other, it is deeply historical – it happens at a specific moment of people and groups’ lives, it unfolds through time, and mostly demands an acceleration of changes normally taking places; it is determined by activities and meanings conferred to situations by people; and it is socially and culturally situated. The main challenge, for psychologists, is however to be able to combine an analysis of changes in the social and cultural field – for instance, the revolution that changes a political or economic system – and an analysis of how people experience the world (Ratner, 2012). For, if our sociocultural analysis still claims to be a psychology, it has to give us access to how specific persons live these changes, and how sociocultural changes and human development mutually constitute each other (Hviid, 2015; Rosa, 2007; Zittoun et al., 2013). In this chapter, I propose to examine the so-called Velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989. I will briefly sketch a history of the country, and present the revolution itself. I will then propose a few theoretical elements which allow us to read the conditions in which the Velvet revolution took place. Looking at some of its consequence in people’s lives, I thus hope to identify some features of a sociocultural psychology of revolution.
