We prove that every smooth divisor in $\mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^2$ of degree $(1,1,2)$ is K-stable.

Introduction: When countermeasures are taken against an avian influenza (AI) pandemic in a hospital, it is essential to know the potential number of staff who would choose to be absent. The purpose of this study was to clarify how many medical staff would be willing to work during a pandemic, and requirements to secure adequate human resources.

Methods: From September to December 2008, a total of 3,152 questionnaires were sent to five private hospitals and one public hospital, which represent the core hospitals in the regions of Kyoto, Osaka, and Hyogo Prefectures. Participants consisted of hospital staff including: (1) physicians; (2) nurses; (3) pharmacists; (4) radiological technologists (RTs); (5) physical therapists (PTs); (6) occupational therapists (OTs); (7) clinical laboratory technologists (CLTs); (8) caregivers; (9) office clerks; and (10) others. They were queried about their attitude toward pandemics, including whether they would come to the hospital to work, treat patients, and what kinds of conditions they required in order to work.

Results: A total of 1,975 persons (62.7%) responded. A total of 204 persons (10.6%) would not come to the hospitals during a pandemic, 363 (18.8%) would perform their duties as usual, unconditionally, 504 (26.1%) would come to hospitals but not treat AI patients, and 857 (44.5%) would report to the hospital and treat AI patients with some essential conditions. These essential conditions were: (1) personal protective equipment (PPE) (80.0%); (2) receipt of workmen's compensation (69.3%); (3) receipt of anti-virus medication (58.2%); and (3) receipt of pre-pandemic vaccination (57.8%).

Conclusion: During a pandemic, all types of health professionals would be lacking, not only physicians and nurses. This study indicates that ensuring sufficient medical human resources would be difficult without the provision of adequate safety and compensation measures.

Poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nanofibers were fabricated with an association of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) by electrospinning. A mixture of P3HT/PVP in a mixed solvent of chlorobenzene and methanol was electrospun to form composite fibers with 60 nm - 2 μm in diameter, followed by getting rid of PVP by selective extraction. After extraction, pure P3HT nanofibers were obtained as a spindle-like structure with wrinkled surface. The nanofibers obtained exhibit specific features of strong interchain contribution as investigated by UV-vis, fluorescence spectroscopic, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and photo-electron investigations. Bulk heterojunction P3HT:PCBM nanofibers with ~200 nm in diameters were also successfully fabricated by using the same technique. The preliminary results from the study of P3HT:PCBM nanofiber-based photovoltaic cells with conversion efficiency over 0.2% could be achieved.

Conductive nanofibers with the average diameters in the range of 60 nm - 2 μm were fabricated by electrospinning of a mixture of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in a mixed solvent of chlorobenzene and methanol. Beaded fibers and/or uniform, smooth-surface fibers were successfully fabricated. The average diameter of the as-spun fibers decreased and the color of as-spun fibers changed with decreasing the concentration of P3HT or PVP. After the removal of PVP from as-spun fibers by Soxhlet extraction, pure P3HT fibers were obtained as a spindle-like with groove-like morphological appearance which may be widely applicable for some specific applications, such as photovoltaic cells, thin film transistors, and light emitting diodes.

Beaded fibers and/or uniform, smooth-surface fibers of conductive polymers with the average diameters ranging in nanometers to sub-micrometers were fabricated by electrospinning of a mixture of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in a mixed solvent of chlorobenzene and methanol. After the removal of PVP from as-spun fibers by Soxhlet extraction, pure P3HT fibers were obtained as a spindle-like with groove-like morphological appearance which may be widely applicable for some specific applications, such as photovoltaic cells, thin film transistors, and light emitting diodes. Optical properties, including UV absorption and photoluminescence (PL) of fibers were investigated. As-spun fibers showed relatively higher conjugation length and different chain distribution, in comparison with the cast film.

We fabricated a laser diode (LD) exhibiting a lasing from strained GaInAs quantum wells (QWs) embedded in Er,O-codoped GaAs (GaAs:Er,O) by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy (OMVPE). The lasing wavelength was designed to tune to the energy separation between the second excited states 4I11/2 and the ground state 4I15/2 of Er3+ ions. The threshold current for the lasing at room temperature was six times larger than that of a GaInAs QW-LD without Er doping, reflecting ultrafast carrier capture by an Er-related trap in GaAs:Er,O. The Er intensity revealed initially steep increase with injected current density in the region for spontaneous emission from the GaInAs QWs. In the stimulated QW emission region, the intensity continued to increase with the current density.

This report describes a novel polymer nanocomposite that shows high transparency, toughness and dimension stability at the same time. Polymer nanocomposites are attracting industrial interest for a wide range of application. One advantage of polymer nanocomposites is the possibility to obtain visually transparent polymer materials owing to nano-size particles that are smaller than visible wavelengths. Transparent polymer nanocomposites are suitable for light, clear, tough and dimensionally stable applications such as the windows and sunroofs of vehicles or houses and other buildings. However, most of the research on transparent polymer nanocomposites has remained at the stage of showing their potential or future expectations because of the complexity of various nanoparticle-polymer matrix combinations. One of the most difficult challenges for the fabrication of transparent nanocomposites is to keep the dispersion of particles in the polymer uniform at the nano-level until the final composite is obtained. Some successful examples have been reported with polyacrylate-based polymer nanocomposites. For example, silica/PMMA nanocomposites show good transparency even with a high filler content. In fact, most of their transparency depends on refractive index matching. While a nanocomposite may appear transparent to the human eye, TEM observation shows that there are many aggregations inside, preventing the material from ever becoming tough and making it extremely brittle. Some other cases are based on a tough polymer like polycarbonate, but with a very restrained filler content of only several weight percent. Because of such a small amount of filler, dimensional stability cannot be improved. Thus, there have been no reports of highly transparent, tough and dimensionally stable polymer nanocomposites with a filler content of more than 10wt%. We overcame this contradictory challenge and succeeded in dispersing more than 15wt% of filler into polycarbonate. We chose needle-shaped alumina boehmite nanoparticles as the filler, and employed an appropriate amount of organic acid as a surface modifier to aid in uniform particle dispersion in the polymer matrix. Polycarbonate is well-known as a tough polymer, but its main chain easily hydrolyses, either in the presence of an acid or base. The hydrolysis reaction makes the polymer chain shorter, leading rapidly to a brittle composite. We carefully defined the surface modification condition to avoid this hydrolysis reaction. This completely novel composite shows excellent properties without any trade-off, including high transparency (Haze<1%), toughness (Izod>60 J/m) and dimensional stability (CLTE<40 ppm) at the same time.

Tokamak plasma with negative central current density is known to be unstable for m=1/n=0 resistive kink magnetohydrodynamic instability and the explanation for the absence of negative central current, the so-called current hole phenomena, is made by the destabilization of the mode. However, a strong reversed magnetic shear configuration has two resonant surfaces for low mode numbers and should be unstable for the double tearing mode (DTM). Here, we examine the effects of DTM on the formation of current hole and show that the occurrence of DTM does not change the situation completely. The growth of DTM flattens the current profile near the minimum-q region; here q is the safety factor, and the current gradient to drive n=0 mode usually remains after a reconnection event due to DTM and the stability of m=1/n=0 mode is not affected much by the DTM activity.

Superwind galaxies at high-redshift are now considered to be the important clue for understanding the interaction and evolution of both galaxies and intergalactic matter. In order to improve our knowledge of superwind galaxies at high redshift, a large sample of superwind candidates is needed. During the course of our new search for Lyman alpha emitters at z = 5.7, we have found a candidate superwind galaxy, LAE J1044-0130, at z = 5.69. The emission-line profile of this object is asymmetric, showing excess red-wing emission and the observed broad line width (= 340 km/s). In this poster, we report detailed observed properties of LAE J1044-0130 as an example of a superwind galaxy.
