To examine the effectiveness of short-term progressive muscle relaxation therapy in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, and aggression/agitation, in patients on an inpatient psychiatric unit. Additionally, to determine the impact of clinical and sociodemographic factors on its effectiveness.
Methods
Psychiatric inpatients at a private, community-based psychiatric hospital were invited to participate in a progressive muscle relaxation activity and filled out pre- and post-activity surveys querying symptoms of depression, anxiety, and aggression/agitation, using a created Likert scale.
Results
The 57 participants in this study showed an average decrease in every symptom domain, including -0.93 in agitation/aggressive symptoms (p<0.001), -2.14 in depressive symptoms (p<0.001), and -1.81 in anxiety symptoms (p<0.001). While diagnosis did not appear to be significantly related to change in score, patients with different primary diagnoses had changes in different symptom domains, with patients with Bipolar Disorder having statistically significant changes in aggression (-1.57, p=0.012) and depression (-2.36, p<0.001), but not in anxiety. Patients with Depression had significant changes in depression (-2.08, p<0.001) and anxiety (-1.96, p<0.001) but not in aggression/agitation, while patients with a Schizophrenia spectrum illness had changes in depression alone (-2.33, p=0.008). Sociodemographic variables had no significant impact.
Conclusions
The findings in this study indicate that a short-term progressive muscle relaxation intervention can lead to statistically and clinically significant changes across various symptom domains and in patients with a variety of psychiatric diagnoses, and support the implementation of this non-invasive and budget-friendly exercise.
This study examines associations between early childhood attachment security and adolescent personality functioning in a high-risk sample within a developmental psychopathology framework. Data from 2,268 children (1165 male; 1103 female) and caregivers participating in Future of Families and Child Well-Being Study (FFCWS) were used to examine (1) effects of genetic polymorphisms of the serotonin transporter (5-HTTLPR) and dopamine D4 receptor (DRD4) genes and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on attachment security and emotional and behavioral dysregulation in early childhood and (2) longitudinal associations and transactional relationships among attachment security, dysregulation, negative parenting attitudes and behaviors, social competence, and adolescent personality functioning. Results revealed that ACEs predicted attachment security over and above sex or the genetic risk, and gene × environment interactions did not increment prediction. Results of cascade models showed that greater early childhood attachment security predicted higher adolescent level of personality functioning via pathways through intermediary variables. Limitations and future research directions are discussed.
The research objectives were to evaluate factors that influence Canadian secondary school students’ milk and milk alternatives (MMA) consumption and to explore associations through age and gender lenses.
Design:
A qualitative design was used, consisting of semi-structured interviews and photo-elicitation methods. Analysis was guided by the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB). Deductive and inductive thematic analyses were used to generate themes, charting data based on attributes such as gender and age.
Setting:
Interviews were held virtually or via telephone.
Participants:
Participants were twenty-eight high school students from Ontario, Canada, diverse in terms of gender and age.
Results:
Both desirable and undesirable beliefs about the health outcomes of consuming MMA were commonly discussed. These included health benefits such as strong bones, muscular strength, and growth, and health consequences like unwanted skin conditions, weight gain, and diseases. While boys and girls associated MMA consumption with muscular strength, boys predominantly considered this favourable, while girls discussed outcomes like unwanted skin conditions and weight gain more often. Adolescents’ perspectives on taste/perceived enjoyment, environmentally friendly choices and animal welfare also influenced their MMA preferences. Parental influences were most cited among social factors, which appeared to be stronger during early adolescence. Factors involving cost, time and accessibility affected adolescents’ beliefs about how difficult it was to consume MMA.
Conclusions:
Recommendations for shifting attitudes towards MMA are provided to address unfavourable beliefs towards these products. Interventions to increase MMA consumption among adolescents should include parents and address cost barriers.
The prolific seed production and polyploidy of annual bluegrass allow for the rapid development of herbicide resistance. Ethofumesate-resistant annual bluegrass plants were identified in the 1990s in grass seed production in Oregon, but their prevalence and distribution are not well documented. Therefore a dose–response experiment was initiated to determine the potential level of ethofumesate resistance in seed production systems. Seeds from 55 annual bluegrass populations were obtained from three sources: seed production fields (31 populations), the seed cleaning process (6 populations), and seed testing lots prior to retail distribution (18 populations). Additionally, two populations, one with known ethofumesate resistance and one with known susceptibility, were identified in preliminary testing and used as controls in this experiment. Seed from each collected population was increased. Individual seedlings were then transplanted into separate cone-tainers, grown to a size of 2 to 3 tillers in the greenhouse, and then sprayed using a compressed air track spray chamber with 10 doses of ethofumesate at 0, 0.56, 1.1, 2.8, 5.6, 8.4, 11.2, 16.8, 22.4, and 44.8 kg ai ha−1, with 0.84 to 2.2 kg ha−1 as the label application rate for perennial ryegrass. The resistant to susceptible ratio of populations across all sources ranged from 0.5 to 5.5. The most resistant populations found in production fields, seed cleaning, and seed testing lots had the effective dose necessary to kill 50% of the population (ED50) of 12.1, 9.4, and 13.1 kg ha−1, respectively. Furthermore, 68% of the populations found in production fields had ED50 higher than 6 kg ha−1, indicating common annual bluegrass resistance in grass seed production. As such, growers should implement integrated weed management strategies, as herbicides alone will likely be ineffective at controlling annual bluegrass.
The structure and impact of thermally induced secondary motions in stably stratified channel flows with two-dimensional surface temperature inhomogeneities is studied using direct numerical simulation (DNS). Starting from a configuration with only spanwise varying surface temperature, where the streamwise direction is homogeneous (Bon & Meyers, J. Fluid Mech., 2022, pp. 1–38), we study cases where the periodic temperature strip length $l_x/h$ (with $h$ the half-channel height) assumes finite values. The patch width ($l_y/h =\{{\rm \pi} /4, {\rm \pi}/8$}) and length are varied at fixed stability and two different Reynolds numbers. Results indicate that for the investigated patch widths, the streamwise development of the secondary flows depends on the patch aspect ratio ($a=l_x/l_y$), while they reach a fully developed state after approximately $25l_y$. The strength of the secondary motions, and their impact on momentum and heat transfer through the dispersive fluxes, is strongly reduced as the length of the temperature strips decreases, and becomes negligible when $a\lesssim 1$. We demonstrate that upward dispersive and turbulent heat transport in locally unstably stratified regions above the high-temperature patches lead to reduced overall downward heat transfer. Comparison to local Monin–Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) reveals that scaled velocity and temperature gradients in homogeneous stably stratified channel flow at $Re_\tau =550$ agree reasonably well with empirical correlations obtained from meteorological data. For thermally heterogeneous cases with strips of finite length, the similarity functions only collapse higher above the surface, where dispersive fluxes are negligible. Lastly, we show that mean profiles of all simulations collapse when using outer-layer scaling based on displacement thickness.
Upon interaction with underwater shock waves, bubbles can collapse and produce high-speed liquid jets in the direction of the wave propagation. This work experimentally investigates the impact of laser-induced underwater impulsive shock waves, i.e. shock waves with a short, finite width, of variable peak pressure on bubbles of radii in the range 10–500 $\mathrm {\mu }$m. The high-speed visualisations provide new benchmarking of remarkable quality for the validation of numerical simulations and the derivation of scaling laws. The experimental results support scaling laws describing the collapse time and the jet speed of bubbles driven by impulsive shock waves as a function of the impulse provided by the wave. In particular, the collapse time and the jet speed are found to be, respectively, inversely and directly proportional to the time integral of the pressure waveform for bubbles with a collapse time longer than the duration of shock interaction and for shock amplitudes sufficient to trigger a nonlinear bubble collapse. These results provide a criterion for the shock parameters that delimits the jetting and non-jetting behaviour for bubbles having a shock width-to-bubble size ratio smaller than one. Jetting is, however, never observed below a peak pressure value of 14 MPa. This limit, where the pressure becomes insufficient to yield a nonlinear bubble collapse, is likely the result of the time scale of the shock wave passage over the bubble becoming very short with respect to the bubble collapse time scale, resulting in the bubble effectively feeling the shock wave as a spatially uniform change in pressure, and in an (almost) spherical bubble collapse.
We investigate the diversity in the sizes and average surface densities of the neutral atomic hydrogen (H i) gas discs in $\sim$280 nearby galaxies detected by the Widefield ASKAP L-band Legacy All-sky Blind Survey (WALLABY). We combine the uniformly observed, interferometric H i data from pilot observations of the Hydra cluster and NGC 4636 group fields with photometry measured from ultraviolet, optical, and near-infrared imaging surveys to investigate the interplay between stellar structure, star formation, and H i structural parameters. We quantify the H i structure by the size of the H i relative to the optical disc and the average H i surface density measured using effective and isodensity radii. For galaxies resolved by $>$$1.3$ beams, we find that galaxies with higher stellar masses and stellar surface densities tend to have less extended H i discs and lower H i surface densities: the isodensity H i structural parameters show a weak negative dependence on stellar mass and stellar mass surface density. These trends strengthen when we limit our sample to galaxies resolved by $>$2 beams. We find that galaxies with higher H i surface densities and more extended H i discs tend to be more star forming: the isodensity H i structural parameters have stronger correlations with star formation. Normalising the H i disc size by the optical effective radius (instead of the isophotal radius) produces positive correlations with stellar masses and stellar surface densities and removes the correlations with star formation. This is due to the effective and isodensity H i radii increasing with mass at similar rates while, in the optical, the effective radius increases slower than the isophotal radius. Our results are in qualitative agreement with previous studies and demonstrate that with WALLABY we can begin to bridge the gap between small galaxy samples with high spatial resolution H i data and large, statistical studies using spatially unresolved, single-dish data.
Early-life socioeconomic status (SES) and adversity are associated with late-life cognition and risk of dementia. We examined the association between early-life SES and adversity and late-life cross-sectional cognitive outcomes as well as global cognitive decline, hypothesizing that adulthood SES would mediate these associations.
Methods:
Our sample (N = 837) was a racially and ethnically diverse cohort of non-Hispanic/Latino White (48%), Black (27%), and Hispanic/Latino (19%) participants from Northern California. Participant addresses were geocoded to the level of the census tract, and US Census Tract 2010 variables (e.g., percent with high school diploma) were extracted and combined to create a neighborhood SES composite. We used multilevel latent variable models to estimate early-life (e.g., parental education, whether participant ever went hungry) and adult (participant’s education, main occupation) SES factors and their associations with cross-sectional and longitudinal cognitive outcomes of episodic memory, semantic memory, executive function, and spatial ability.
Results:
Child and adult factors were strongly related to domain-specific cognitive intercepts (0.20–0.48 SD per SD of SES factor); in contrast, SES factors were not related to global cognitive change (0.001–0.01 SD per year per SD of SES factor). Adulthood SES mediated a large percentage (68–75%) of the total early-life effect on cognition.
Conclusions:
Early-life sociocontextual factors are more strongly associated with cross-sectional late-life cognitive performance compared to cognitive change; this effect is largely mediated through associations with adulthood SES.
Wearable robotic devices (WRD) are still struggling to fulfill their vast potential. Inadequate daily life usability is one of the main hindrances to increased technology acceptance. Improving usability evaluation practices during the development of WRD could help address these limitations. In this work, we present the design and validation of a novel online platform aiming to fill this gap, the Interactive Usability Toolbox (IUT). This platform consists of a public website that offers an interactive, context-specific search within a database of 154 user research methods and educational information about usability. In a dedicated study, the effect of this platform to support usability evaluation was investigated. Twelve WRD experts were asked to complete the task of defining usability evaluation protocols for two specific use cases. The platform was provided to support one of the use cases. The quality and composition of the proposed protocols were assessed by (i) two blinded reviewers, (ii) the participants themselves, and (iii) the study coordinators. We showed that using the IUT significantly affected the proposed evaluation focus, shifting protocols from mainly effectiveness-oriented to more user-focused studies. The protocol quality, as rated by the external reviewers, remained equivalent to those designed with conventional strategies. A mixed-method usability evaluation of the platform yielded an overall positive image, with detailed suggestions for further improvements. The IUT is expected to positively affect the evaluation and development of WRD through its educational value, the context-specific recommendations supporting ongoing benchmarking endeavors, and highlighting the value of qualitative user research.
Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) tends to co-occur with greater alcohol consumption as well as alcohol use disorder (AUD). However, it is unknown whether the same etiologic factors that underlie PTSD-alcohol-related problems comorbidity also contribute to PTSD- alcohol consumption.
Methods
We used summary statistics from large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of European-ancestry (EA) and African-ancestry (AA) participants to estimate genetic correlations between PTSD and a range of alcohol consumption-related and alcohol-related problems phenotypes.
Results
In EAs, there were positive genetic correlations between PTSD phenotypes and alcohol-related problems phenotypes (e.g. Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) problem score) (rGs: 0.132−0.533, all FDR adjusted p < 0.05). However, the genetic correlations between PTSD phenotypes and alcohol consumption -related phenotypes (e.g. drinks per week) were negatively associated or non-significant (rGs: −0.417 to −0.042, FDR adjusted p: <0.05-NS). For AAs, the direction of correlations was sometimes consistent and sometimes inconsistent with that in EAs, and the ranges were larger (rGs for alcohol-related problems: −0.275 to 0.266, FDR adjusted p: NS, alcohol consumption-related: 0.145–0.699, FDR adjusted p: NS).
Conclusions
These findings illustrate that the genetic associations between consumption and problem alcohol phenotypes and PTSD differ in both strength and direction. Thus, the genetic factors that may lead someone to develop PTSD and high levels of alcohol consumption are not the same as those that lead someone to develop PTSD and alcohol-related problems. Discussion around needing improved methods to better estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations in diverse and admixed ancestry samples is provided.
Psychiatric hospitalization is a major driver of cost in the treatment of schizophrenia. Here, we asked whether a technology-enhanced approach to relapse prevention could reduce days spent in a hospital after discharge.
Methods
The Improving Care and Reducing Cost (ICRC) study was a quasi-experimental clinical trial in outpatients with schizophrenia conducted between 26 February 2013 and 17 April 2015 at 10 different sites in the USA in an outpatient setting. Patients were between 18 and 60 years old with a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or psychotic disorder not otherwise specified. Patients received usual care or a technology-enhanced relapse prevention program during a 6-month period after discharge. The health technology program included in-person, individualized relapse prevention planning with treatments delivered via smartphones and computers, as well as a web-based prescriber decision support program. The main outcome measure was days spent in a psychiatric hospital during 6 months after discharge.
Results
The study included 462 patients, of which 438 had complete baseline data and were thus used for propensity matching and analysis. Control participants (N = 89; 37 females) were enrolled first and received usual care for relapse prevention followed by 349 participants (128 females) who received technology-enhanced relapse prevention. During 6-month follow-up, 43% of control and 24% of intervention participants were hospitalized (χ2 = 11.76, p<0.001). Days of hospitalization were reduced by 5 days (mean days: b = −4.58, 95% CI −9.03 to −0.13, p = 0.044) in the intervention condition compared to control.
Conclusions
These results suggest that technology-enhanced relapse prevention is an effective and feasible way to reduce rehospitalization days among patients with schizophrenia.
This study evaluated: (1) apolipoprotein E (APOE) ϵ4 prevalence among Black, Latino, and White older adults, (2) associations of APOE ϵ4 status with baseline level and change over time of cognitive outcomes across groups, and (3) combined impact of APOE ϵ4 prevalence and magnitude of effect on cognitive decline within each racial/ethnic group.
Method:
Participants included 297 White, 138 Latino, and 149 Black individuals from the longitudinal UC Davis Diversity Cohort who had APOE genotyping and ≥2 cognitive assessments. Magnitude of associations of ϵ4 with cognitive baseline and change across racial/ethnic groups was tested with multilevel parallel process longitudinal analyses and multiple group models.
Results:
ϵ4 prevalence in Black (46%) and White participants (46%) was almost double that of Latino participants (24%). ϵ4 was associated with poorer baseline episodic memory only in White participants (p = .001), but had a moderately strong association with episodic memory change across all racial/ethnic groups (Blacks= −.061 SD/year, Latinos = −.055,Whites= −.055). ϵ4 association with semantic memory change was strongest in White participants (−.071), intermediate in Latino participants (−.041), and weakest in Black participants (−.022).
Conclusion:
Calculated cognitive trajectories across racial/ethnic groups were influenced in an additive manner by ϵ4 prevalence and strength of association with cognitive decline within the group. Group differences in ϵ4 prevalences and associations of ϵ4 with cognition may suggest different pathways from APOE to cognitive decline, and, AD possibly having less salient impact on cognitive decline in non-White participants. Differential effects of APOE on episodic memory and non-memory cognition have important implications for understanding how APOE influences late life cognitive decline.
Recent studies have demonstrated that large secondary motions are excited by surface roughness with dominant spanwise length scales of the order of the flow's outer length scale. Inspired by this, we explore the effect of spanwise heterogeneous surface temperature in weakly to strongly stratified closed channel flow (at $Ri_\tau =120$, 960; $Re_\tau = 180$, 550) with direct numerical simulations. The configuration consists of equally sized strips of high and low temperature at the lower and upper boundaries, while an overall stable stratification is induced by imposing an average temperature difference between the top and bottom. We consider the influence of the width of the strips (${\rm \pi} /8 \leq \lambda /h \leq 4{\rm \pi} $), Reynolds number, stability and upper boundary condition on the mean flow structure, skin friction and heat transfer. Results indicate that secondary flows are excited, with alternating high- and low-momentum pathways and vortices, similar to the patterns induced by spanwise heterogeneous surface roughness. We find that the impact of the surface heterogeneity on the outer layer depends strongly on the spanwise heterogeneity length scale of the surface temperature. Comparison to stable channel flow with uniform temperature reveals that the heterogeneous surface temperature increases the global friction coefficient and reduces the global Nusselt number in most cases. However, for the high-Reynolds cases with $\lambda /h \geq {\rm \pi} /2$, we find a reduction of the friction coefficient. At stronger stability, the vertical extent of the vortices is reduced and the impact of the heterogeneous temperature on momentum and heat transfer is smaller.
Alcohol use disorder (AUD) and schizophrenia (SCZ) frequently co-occur, and large-scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified significant genetic correlations between these disorders.
Methods
We used the largest published GWAS for AUD (total cases = 77 822) and SCZ (total cases = 46 827) to identify genetic variants that influence both disorders (with either the same or opposite direction of effect) and those that are disorder specific.
Results
We identified 55 independent genome-wide significant single nucleotide polymorphisms with the same direction of effect on AUD and SCZ, 8 with robust effects in opposite directions, and 98 with disorder-specific effects. We also found evidence for 12 genes whose pleiotropic associations with AUD and SCZ are consistent with mediation via gene expression in the prefrontal cortex. The genetic covariance between AUD and SCZ was concentrated in genomic regions functional in brain tissues (p = 0.001).
Conclusions
Our findings provide further evidence that SCZ shares meaningful genetic overlap with AUD.
In this experimental study, multiscale rough surfaces with regular (cuboid) elements are used to examine the effects of roughness-scale hierarchy on turbulent boundary layers. Three iterations have been used with a first iteration of large-scale cuboids onto which subsequent smaller cuboids are uniformly added, with their size decreasing with a power-law as the number increases. The drag is directly measured through a floating-element drag balance, while particle image velocimetry allowed the assessment of the flow field. The drag measurements revealed the smallest roughness iteration can contribute to nearly 7 $\%$ of the overall drag of a full surface, while the intermediate iterations are responsible for over $12\,\%$ (at the highest Reynolds number tested). It is shown that the aerodynamic roughness length scale between subsequent iterations varies linearly, and can be described with a geometrical parameter proportional to the frontal solidity. Mean and turbulent statistics are evaluated using the drag information, and highlighted substantial changes within the canopy region as well as in the outer flow, with modifications to the inertial sublayer (ISL) and the wake region. These changes are shown to be caused by the presence of large-scale secondary motions in the cross-plane, which itself is believed to be a consequence of the largest multiscale roughness phase (spacing between largest cuboids), shown to be of the same order of magnitude as the boundary-layer thickness. Implications on the classical similarity laws are additionally discussed.
ABSTRACT IMPACT: This work identifies host immune perturbations in sepsis mortality that suggests targets for a precision medicine paradigm in the host response to infection. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: To compare the early whole blood transcriptome during sepsis between 30-day survivors and non-survivors in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and to evaluate for pathway enrichment that might explain sepsis lethality. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: We enrolled 162 sepsis patients in the first 24 hours of ICU admission, particularly targeting individuals requiring vasopressors. Peripheral whole blood was collected in PAXgene vacutainers. Isolated RNA was analyzed with Affymetrix Human Genome ST 2.0 microarray. Differential gene expression was performed with Bioconductor/R/limma using log2 fold-change +/-0.6 as a threshold for differential expression, and a Benjamini-Hochberg adjusted p-value <0.05 to declare significance. Functional gene enrichment was performed using the Gene Ontology (GO) database with PANTHER overrepresentation test (Fisher’s Exact) on all transcripts with adjusted p-value <0.05. Pathways analysis was performed with the Reactome Project using the raw fold change and significance data to identify dysregulated pathways. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: There were 58 non-survivors (36% mortality). We identified 39 genes as differentially expressed between sepsis non-survivors and survivors; 31 were upregulated in non-survivors and 8 had reduced expression. Several of the most overexpressed transcripts are neutrophil-specific, including LCN, MPO, OLF4M4, DEFA3, and DEFA4. A functional gene overrepresentation test further supports this finding, as the most enriched gene ontologies were neutrophil-mediated killing, neutrophil cytotoxicity, neutrophil extravasation, and respiratory burst, all demonstrating higher than 10-fold enrichment and FDR < 0.02. Pathway analysis of the peripheral blood transcriptome was notable for immune response derangement, specifically downregulation of both innate and adaptive immune pathways (FDR < 0.00001). DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF FINDINGS: We identified increased expression of neutrophil-related genes in sepsis non-survivors, replicating candidates previously identified in pediatric sepsis mortality and ARDS. These immune perturbations in sepsis mortality may represent key targets for eventually employing precision medicine strategies in sepsis.
The hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis is sensitive to early life stress, with enduring consequences for biological stress vulnerability and health (Gunnar & Talge, 2008). Low socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with dysregulation of the stress hormone cortisol in early childhood. However, a mechanistic understanding of this association is lacking. Multidimensional assessment of both SES and cortisol is needed to characterize the intricate relations between SES and cortisol function in early childhood. We assessed parent-reported family income, parent education, occupational prestige, neighborhood risk, food insecurity, and household chaos for 12-month-old infants (N = 90) and 3.5-year-old children (N = 91). Hair cortisol concentration (HCC) was obtained from parent and child, indexing chronic biological stress, and diurnal salivary cortisol was measured in the children. Controlling for parent HCC, parent education uniquely predicted infant and child HCC and, in addition, neighborhood risk uniquely predicted infant HCC. Household chaos predicted bedtime salivary cortisol concentration (SCC) for both infants and children, and infant daily cortisol output. Food insecurity was associated with flattened cortisol slope in 3.5-year-old children. Parental sensitivity did not mediate relations between SES and cortisol. Results highlight the utility of SES measures that index unpredictable and unsafe contexts, such as neighborhood risk, food insecurity, and household chaos.
Gravitational waves from coalescing neutron stars encode information about nuclear matter at extreme densities, inaccessible by laboratory experiments. The late inspiral is influenced by the presence of tides, which depend on the neutron star equation of state. Neutron star mergers are expected to often produce rapidly rotating remnant neutron stars that emit gravitational waves. These will provide clues to the extremely hot post-merger environment. This signature of nuclear matter in gravitational waves contains most information in the 2–4 kHz frequency band, which is outside of the most sensitive band of current detectors. We present the design concept and science case for a Neutron Star Extreme Matter Observatory (NEMO): a gravitational-wave interferometer optimised to study nuclear physics with merging neutron stars. The concept uses high-circulating laser power, quantum squeezing, and a detector topology specifically designed to achieve the high-frequency sensitivity necessary to probe nuclear matter using gravitational waves. Above 1 kHz, the proposed strain sensitivity is comparable to full third-generation detectors at a fraction of the cost. Such sensitivity changes expected event rates for detection of post-merger remnants from approximately one per few decades with two A+ detectors to a few per year and potentially allow for the first gravitational-wave observations of supernovae, isolated neutron stars, and other exotica.
Determination of antibodies against ToRCH antigens at the beginning of pregnancy allows assessment of both the maternal immune status and the risks to an adverse pregnancy outcome. Age-standardised seroprevalences were determined in sera from 1009 women of childbearing age residing in Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Poland, Turkey or China using a multiparametric immunoblot containing antigen substrates for antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1, HSV-2), Bordetella pertussis, Chlamydia trachomatis, parvovirus B19, Treponema pallidum and varicella zoster virus (VZV). Seroprevalences for antibodies against HSV-1 were >90% in samples from Brazil and Turkey, whereas the other four countries showed lower mean age-adjusted seroprevalences (range: 62.5–87.9%). Samples from Brazilian women showed elevated seroprevalences of antibodies against HSV-2 (40.1%), C. trachomatis (46.8%) and B. pertussis (56.6%) compared to the other five countries. Seroprevalences of anti-T. gondii antibodies (0.5%) and anti-parvovirus B19 antibodies (7.5%) were low in samples from Chinese women, compared to the other five countries. Samples from German women revealed a low age-standardised seroprevalence of anti-CMV antibodies (28.8%) compared to the other five countries. These global differences in immune status of women in childbearing age advocate country-specific prophylaxis strategies to avoid infection with ToRCH pathogens.
