This article discusses sexual harassment in the east African cut-flower and horticultural industry, based on research on 62 farms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. It argues that sexual harassment is fostered both by coercive labour conditions within global value chains and by existing hierarchical gender relations. The research finds that harassment is widespread, that many lack a vocabulary to describe or discuss this, and that female casual and temporary workers are most likely to be targeted. Action research coupled with organisation of workers, however, has been effective in giving ‘voice’ to those suffering harassment: this is a first step in a feminist labour mobilisation and policy formulation. Procedures against sexual harassment are beginning to be formulated: a key concern is implementation. Addressing sexual harassment is central in ensuring the security of working people, particularly the most marginalised.

We introduce a novel method to improve the computational efficiency for (S)TEM image simulation by employing matrix diagonalization of the mixed envelope function (MEF). The MEF is derived by taking the finite size and the energy spread of the effective electron source into account, and is a component of the transmission cross-coefficient that accounts for the correlation between partially coherent waves. Since the MEF is a four-dimensional array and its application in image calculations is time-consuming, we reduce the computation time by using its eigenvectors. By incorporating the aperture function into the matrix diagonalization, only a small number of eigenvectors are required to approximate the original matrix with high accuracy. The diagonalization enables for each eigenvector the calculation of the corresponding image by employing the coherent model. The individual images are weighted by the corresponding eigenvalues and then summed up, resulting in the total partially coherent image.

While a Research Associate attached to the Ministry of Community Development and Women's Affairs, Zimbabwe, in 1984, I studied the relation between gender and class in six Resettlement Areas (R.A.s) during an eight-month period in there north-eastern Provinces: Central and East Mashonaland, and Manicaland. The country is divided into five agro-ecological ‘Natural Regions’, numbered I to V, indicating decreasing rainfall and soil fertility, and the R.A.s studied were all in II or III, albeit in a year of drought.
