The Minoan settlement of Myrtos–Pyrgos on the south coast of Crete has produced five seals (and one unfinished seal), 11 seal impressions on clay vessels, two roundels and one nodulus, as well as two Linear A tablets and two inscriptions on clay vessels. Dating between Early Minoan II and Late Minoan IB, these documents form valuable evidence for the development of sealing, marking and writing practices at a small but important rural settlement, including a penchant for using antique seals for stamping jars. They contribute too to understanding the regional hierarchical and, probably, political cultures of Crete throughout this long period, especially in the late Protopalatial phase of Middle Minoan IIB, when there seems to have been a special relationship with Malia on the north coast, and again in Late Minoan IB, when there was a relationship with Knossos. Finally, the paper discusses a pithos fragment from Tel Haror in Israel, which appears to have an inscription in Cretan Hieroglyphic or Linear A, and may well have been a product of Myrtos or nearby.

We investigate the gender gap in issue attention among members of parliament (MPs) by applying automated text analytic techniques to a novel data set on Italian parliamentary speeches over a remarkably long period (1948–2020). We detect a gendered specialization across issues that tends to disappear as women’s shares in parliamentary groups increase. We then investigate whether women’s access to previously male-owned issues brings with it a different agenda, operationalized as a different vocabulary. We detect a U-shaped pattern: language gender specificity is high when female MPs are tokens in parliamentary groups with a large preponderance of men; it decreases when their shares start increasing and grows again when they constitute a considerable minority. We argue that this pattern is consistent with the theory of tokenism, and it is produced by the interlinkage of commitment to shared norms and the distribution of “activation thresholds” among female MPs.

This article examines the earliest attestations of writing on Crete at the beginning of the second millennium bce, the so-called ‘Archanes formula’. The aim is to reassess its origin, purpose, significance and ‘reading’ through a multi-step analysis taking in details of palaeography, correlations with iconographic seal motifs, and material culture. Key issues are considered, namely the extent to which is it comparable with the Linear A ‘libation formula’ a-sa-sa-ra-me, or, conversely, whether it should be singled out as a separate writing tradition. To address these questions, the ‘Archanes formula’ is brought under close scrutiny, vis-à-vis the graphic repertoires of Cretan Hieroglyphic and, in parallel, Linear A. Our conclusions point towards a strong connection with the Cretan Hieroglyphic milieu, in terms of sign shapes and direct links to seal imagery. In this light, the earliest writing in the Aegean is revisited not so much as a script in itself, nor as a prequel to Linear A religious sequences, but as a direct manifestation of the iconic glyptic practices of the Hieroglyphic tradition.

The Cypro-Minoan script was in regular use on the island of Cyprus, and by Cypriot merchants overseas, during the Late Bronze Age. Although still undeciphered, sign-sequences inscribed on miniature copper ‘oxhide’ ingots and on associated clay labels may hold a clue to their purpose. The ingots were previously interpreted as votive offerings inscribed with dedications. Here, it is suggested instead that these extremely pure copper miniatures were produced as commercial samples, and were marked with a brand denoting their high quality and provenance, such as ‘pure Cypriot copper’.

This article examines the inception of writing on Crete in the second millennium bc from a fresh methodological perspective. It aims to develop a synoptic understanding of the origin, purpose, experience, and significance of the earliest attestations of writing on the island, to investigate the context of its creation, and to explore the cultural triggers that underlie the application of writing in the context of Middle Minoan Crete. Three key points are considered: the problematic definition of early writing on Crete, the possible identification of the subject matter of the Cretan hieroglyphic inscriptions on sealstones, and the script's level of indebtedness to pre-existing models. These paths of investigation are also crucial points of departure for understanding the phenomenon of early writing in more general terms, from a multidisciplinary perspective that seeks to advocate a synergic collaboration between anthropology, archaeology, epigraphy and sociolinguistics.

The aim of this study was to assess the aorta–intima thickness (aIT) and serum metabolomic profile in selective intrauterine growth-restricted (sIUGR) monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin fetuses presenting Doppler velocimetry alterations. Fetal abdominal aIT was measured by ultrasound at 32 weeks of gestation, enrolling 24 MCDA twin fetuses (8 sIUGR and 16 controls). sIUGR twin fetuses were classified into two groups: Group 1 consisted of sIUGR with abnormal umbilical artery (UA) Doppler waveforms and Group 2 included sIUGR with normal UA Doppler. Group 3 were control fetuses appropriate for gestational age (AGA). Fetal blood samples were obtained from the umbilical vein immediately after fetal extraction. A non-targeted metabolomic profiling investigated fetal metabolism alterations by using liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS). Median fetal aIT was significantly larger in Group 1 (median value = 0.9 mm; range = 0.8–1.0 mm; p < .002) and Group 2 (median value = 0.8 mm; range = 0.7–0.8 mm; p < .002) than in AGA Group 3 (median value = 0.5 mm; range = 0.4–0.6 mm; p < .002). Metabolomic analyses, performed on four sIUGR cases (Group 1) compared with four AGA co-twins, showed an upregulation of phenylalanine, sphingosine, glycerophosphocholine, and choline, and a downregulation of valine, tryptophan, isoleucine, and proline sIUGR Group 1 compared with AGA. Although for metabolomics data only a statistical tendency (and not a statistical significance) was reached due to the small sample size, we believe that our results represent a valid starting point for further in-depth metabolomic and proteomic investigations of sIUGR in MCDA fetuses.
