The Khabarovsk Complex, a Jurassic accretionary complex distributed in and around the Khabarovsk city area, Far East Russia, comprises mélange and schist facies. From the review of previous studies including Russian papers, the lithology and age of the constituent rocks of the mélange facies can be summarized as follows: Upper Paleozoic basic volcanic rocks, mainly pillow lava, and altered gabbro, Upper Carboniferous to Upper Permian fusulinoidean-bearing limestone associated with tuff, Lower and Middle Jurassic siliceous mudstone, Upper Jurassic tuffaceous mudstone, uppermost Jurassic carbonate concretions embedded in mudstone, and age-unknown sandstone. Newly found sequences of limestone-chert and of basalt-chert in the mélange facies crop out along the Amur River in the Khabarovsk city area. A chert sample of the limestone-chert sequence contains Albaillella aff. asymmetrica and Pseudoalbaillella aff. lomentaria, and a chert sample of the basalt-chert sequence includes Follicucullus monacanthus, Follicucullus porrectus, and Pseudoalbaillella cf. yanaharaensis. The radiolarian assemblages from the limestone-chert and basalt-chert sequences have a maximum age of middle Early Permian and late Middle Permian, respectively, overlapping the time of deposition of the fusulinoidean-bearing limestone. The co-occurrence of chert and limestone indicates that the fusulinoidean-bearing limestone was formed on a basaltic topographic high in a pelagic ocean whereas the radiolarians accumulated in a deeper part. Limestone debris occasionally flowed into the depositional site of the radiolarian chert. Although the Khabarovsk Complex was simply considered as a northern extension of the Mino-Tamba Belt of the Inner Zone of southwest Japan, we propose a new correlation based on the lithologic associations. The mélange facies of the Khabarovsk Complex is correlative with one of the Kasugano, Funabuseyama, Nabi, and Yabuhara Formations in the Mino-Tamba Belt, whereas the schist facies is correlative with the Hikami Formation of the Ultra-Tamba Belt.

The microstructural evolution of Fe–Mn–C austenitic steels, which exhibit outstanding high-ductile deformation in their plastic regions, was characterized by line-profile and texture analyses. The convolutional multiple whole profile fitting procedure was used for a line-profile analysis of 2θ−θ diffraction data to evaluate variations of crystallite size, dislocation density, and dislocation arrangement. A substantial refinement of the crystallite size proceeded at an early deformation stage. In addition, the dislocation density increased with an increase in the tensile strain. Texture evolution was characterized by the analysis of orientation distribution functions. Three texture components grew with an increase in the tensile strain. According to the pole figure describing the full width at half maximum (FWHM) distribution of the 220 reflection, the nontextured grains had more microstructural defects than the textured grains. To evaluate the microstructural defects in detail, the 220 reflection observed at each texture orientation was analyzed by the single-line-profile method. The crystallite size and dislocation density were almost comparable, irrespective of the kind of texture component. The crystallite size of the nontextured grains was also comparable to that of the textured grains, whereas the nontextured grains had a dislocation density several times that of the textured grains.

The growth of precipitates in a deformed Cu–Ni–Si alloy with an aging treatment and the rearrangement of dislocations were investigated using small-angle X-ray scattering method and XRD line-profile analysis. The small-angle X-ray scattering method was used for characterizing the growth behavior of the precipitates. The results showed that the precipitates grew gradually to a few nanometers in radius when aged under the condition that the alloy exhibited a maximum of the hardness due to precipitation hardening. The growth rate rose from the onset of the overaging, where the hardness started to decrease. The line-profile analysis of copper-based alloy diffraction peaks using modified Williamson–Hall and modified Warren–Averbach procedures yielded a variation in the dislocation densities of the alloy as a function of the aging time. The dislocation density of the alloy before the aging treatment was estimated to be 1.7×1015 m−2 and its high value was held up to the peak-aging time. With the onset of the overaging, however, the dislocation density distinctly decreased by about 1 order of magnitude indicating that a large amount of the dislocations rearranged to release the alloy from the high dislocation-density state. The results suggest that the massive rearrangement of dislocations was accompanied with coarsening of the precipitates.

A cationic peptide dendrier, dendritic poly(L-lysine), forms complexes with oligonucleotides and can deliver them to liver after intravenous injection. Here, we tried to deliver apolipoprotein B-specific siRNA for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia and NFκB decoy for the hepatitis treatment. Significant therapeutic effects in those disease model mice were observed after intravenous injection of the oligonucleotides complexes with dendritic poly(L-lysine).

Combining novel highly-doped phosphate glasses and advanced fiber drawing techniques, we fabricated and tested single-frequency fiber lasers that generate powers of more than 2-W. We demonstrate enhanced performance employing active photonic crystal fiber compared to more conventional devices that are based on large core step-index fiber.

Through the integration of phosphate glass fiber gratings and highly-doped active phosphate glass fiber, we improve on optical, thermal, and mechanical behavior of our compact fiber lasers. Powerful and widely tunable phosphate glass distributed fiber lasers are presented and the possibility of cascading several grating structure for multiple wavelength generation is demonstrated. We also present results on phase-locking and coherently combining the output of up to 37 fiber cores into a single, near-Gaussian laser beam. To achieve exclusive oscillation of the fundamental in-phase supermode, several all-fiber laser cavities have been designed, numerically analyzed, fabricated, and tested. We will report on a 10-cm long monolithic all-fiber laser that emits more than 12-W of optical power and is based on combining the output of 19 active cores. All the cores are integrated within the same cladding and arranged in a two-dimensional isometric array.

We report magnetic properties of [Ca2CoO3-δ]0.62CoO2 (Ca349) powders with various average size and the Bi- and Sr-doping effects on thermoelectric properties for the magnetically grain-aligned and densified Ca349 thick films. Magnetic anisotropy at 300 K depended on the initial average size of Ca349 powders and decreased with the decrease in the size. This presumably suggests that distortion of crystal structure was induced by a ball-milling process and led to the change of magnetic anisotropy. On the Bi- and Sr-doping effects, an obvious enhancement of thermoelectric properties did not emerge in the case of the Sr-doping, whereas the enhancement was observed for the Bi-doped Ca349 thick films. However, a drastic decrease of magnetic anisotropy was caused by the Bi-doping. For usage of the p-type layer in multilayered thermoelectric module, tuning of the Bi-doping levels in which both enhancement of thermoelectric properties and a certain level of magnetic anisotropy are achieved is required.

We report thermoelectric (TE) properties of mono-layer thick films of p-type [Ca2CoO3-δ]0.62CoO2 (Ca349) and n-type compounds of Ca0.9La0.1MnO3 (Mn113) and LaNi0.98Mo0.02O3 (Ni113) for the improvement of TE performance in multi-layered TE modules. In the case of magnetically aligned Ca349 film, the improvement of TE properties due to the reduction of resistivity (ρ) was achieved by optimization of hot-pressing temperature and ρ was sensitive to relative density of the Ca349 layer. For the decrease in ρ of the n-type layers, two different approaches, the choice of Ni113 as a n-type compound and usage of fine powders of Mn113, were attempted. Both approaches were effective for reducing ρ even in the sintering at ∼900°C.

We report the preparation of grain-aligned [Ca2CoO3−δ]0.62CoO2 (Ca349) thick films and the conversion of the easy axis of magnetization from the a-axis to the c-axis. The thick films were fabricated by a simultaneous usage of electrophoretic deposition and magnetic alignment methods (MEPD) at high deposition rate with the order of 10 mm/min. Moreover, a multi-layered thick film of Al2O3/Ca349/Al2O3/Ca0.9La0.1MnO3/Al2O3 was also fabricated by the MEPD method by the optimization of condition of each suspension. The conversion of the easy axis was performed crystallochemically for a [Bi2Sr2O4]0.55CoO2 (BiSr222) compound with the easy axis parallel to the a-axis in order to fabricate c-axis grain-oriented bulks by the magnetic alignment method. The substitution of Ca for Sr in the [(Bi0.5Pb0.5)2Sr2O4] block layer induced the change of the easy axis into the c-axis direction, and the magnetic anisotropy was increased by the partial substitution of rare earth elements of Pr, Nd, Tb and Dy for Ca. Using a compound of [(Bi0.5Pb0.5)2(Ca0.8Pr0.2)2O4]0.55CoO2, we have successfully prepared the c-axis grain-aligned bulk by the magneto-scientific method. Our present results indicate that the magneto-scientific method is one of the useful and realistic processes for production of thermoelectric modules.

An extremely rare case of primary non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma of the larynx (Stage IE) diagnosed by gene rearrangement is reported. The patient was a 76-year-old man with a chief complaint of pharyngeal discomfort. Remission was obtained by excision of the tumour and radiotherapy. Surface phenotypic studies of the laryngeal lesion demonstrated a main population of B-cells expressing L-26, some of the atypical lymphocytes positive with UCHL-1. Genotypic analysis of the specimen disclosed a clonal rearrangement of the immunoglobulin heavy chain with the same rearrangement pattern. These data indicate that this patient had non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma with diffuse large B-cell type. Gene rearrangement analysis was useful for diagnosis. Diagnostic and therapeutic options are discussed in light of the current literature.

A photoemission study of dodecanethiol (DT)-capped Au nanoparticles on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrates has been carried out in order to investigate in detail the electronic structures of metallic nanoparticles supported on the substrates. The present DT-capped Au nanoparticles show that the leading edge in the photoemission spectra near the Fermi level is not the Fermi edge, with the midpoint of the steep slope being away from the Fermi level. From these results, we discuss the electronic structures of DT-capped Au nanoparticles, especially nanoparticle-HOPG substrate interaction.

We have carried out an angle-resolved photoemission study of double Ag nanofilm structures, composed of an outer Ag nanofilm / Cu barrier layer / inner Ag nanofilm / Cu(111) substrate. From these results, we discuss the electronic coupling between the quantized electronic states in the double Ag nanofilm structures with various configurations.

A new method of synthesizing silicon-based polymer films by excimer laser ablation of hexaphenyldisilane (HPDS) has been studied. The polymerized films were formed on a substrate by laser ablation deposition of HPDS at 248 nm. The structure of the polymerized films depended strongly on the laser fluence and repetition rates. The thermal stability and hardness of the deposited films were estimated by thermogravimetry and a Vickers microhardness meter. The films showed good thermal stability, depending on the laser processing parameters.
