In this study, we examined the cellular infectivity and ultrastructural changes due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in the various cells of bronchoalveolar fluid (BALF) from intubated patients of different age groups (≥60 years and <60 years) and with common comorbidities such as diabetes, liver and kidney diseases, and malignancies. BALF of 79 patients (38 cases >60 and 41 cases <60 years) were studied by light microscopy, immunofluorescence, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy to evaluate the ultrastructural changes in the ciliated epithelium, type II pneumocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, and anucleated granulocytes. This study demonstrated relatively a greater infection and better preservation of subcellular structures in these cells from BALF of younger patients (<60 years compared with the older patients (≥60 years). The different cells of BALF from the patients without comorbidities showed higher viral load compared with the patients with comorbidities. Diabetic patients showed maximum ultrastructural damage in BALF cells in the comorbid group. This study highlights the comparative effect of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the different airway and inflammatory cells of BALF at the subcellular levels among older and younger patients and in patients with comorbid conditions.

Cardiac hypertrophy (CH) is an augmentation of either the right ventricular or the left ventricular mass in order to compensate for the increase of work load on the heart. Metabolic abnormalities lead to histological changes of cardiac myocytes and turn into CH. The molecular mechanisms that lead to initiate CH have been of widespread concern, hence the development of the new field of research, metabolomics: one ‘omics’ approach that can reveal comprehensive information of the paradigm shift of metabolic pathways network in contrast to individual enzymatic reaction-based metabolites, have attempted and until now only 19 studies have been conducted using experimental animal and human specimens. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics studies have found that CH is a metabolic disease and is mainly linked to the harmonic imbalance of glycolysis, citric acid cycle, amino acids and lipid metabolism. The current review will summarise the main outcomes of the above mentioned 19 studies that have expanded our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that may lead to CH and eventually to heart failure.

The Cretaceous chaetetid sponge Acanthochaetetes huauclillensis Sánchez-Beristain and García-Barrera is reported for the first time from the Aptian–Cenomanian Khalsi Formation, Ladakh Himalaya, India. Its low- to high-domical growth form could suggest an adaptation to either an environment with constant sedimentation rates, or to an irregular substrate. However, these growth forms also may indicate an absence of important environmental/sedimentological changes during the lifespan of the sponges. In addition, the growth form of this species suggests a calm, non-turbulent, reef-like microenvironment. Along with the other faunal assemblages, such as the rudists, corals, and the gastropod Nerinea, A. huauclillensis indicates a tropical to subtropical shallow marine carbonate platform setting. This new finding extends its stratigraphic range from the upper Hauterivian to the Aptian–Cenomanian interval in the eastern Tethyan realm.

The purpose of this paper is to disclose improved crystal based frequency source system covering design techniques and experimental methodologies for the stabilization of phase noise performance of X-band phase-locked loop (PLL) at 10.6 GHz. Phase noise performance of PLL-based unit under test (UUT) is prone to disturbance occurred in random vibration profile frequency spectrum. UUT self-resonance plays vital role in occurrence of disturbance in random vibration profile. The stabilization of phase noise performance during dynamic (random) vibration condition is achieved by following methodologies, i.e. vibration-isolator compensation techniques, purification tactic for reference crystal of PLL, and spatial location analysis for finding out mounting position of reference crystal. Spatial analysis helps to filter out UUT self-resonance frequency from random vibration spectrum which leads to reduction of frequency resonance pickups during random vibration testing.

New whole-rock geochemical analyses along with laser ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry U–Pb zircon ages of the granite–rhyolite from the Karakoram Batholith, exposed along the Shyok Valley, NW India, have been performed to understand the timing and geochemical evolution of these magmatic bodies and their implications for the geodynamic evolution of the Karakoram Batholith. New geochronological data on granites and rhyolites along with previously published geochronological data indicate that the Karakoram Batholith evolved during Albian time (~110–100 Ma) owing to the subduction of Tethys oceanic lithosphere along the Shyok Suture Zone. This region witnessed a period of no magmatism during ~99–85 Ma. Following this, the Kohistan–Ladakh arc and Karakoram Batholith evolved as a single entity in Late Cretaceous and early Palaeogene times. Late Cretaceous (~85 Ma) rhyolite intrusions within the Karakoram Batholith show calc-alkaline subduction-related signatures with a highly peraluminous nature (molar A/CNK = 1.42–1.81). These intrusions may have resulted from c. ~13.8 % to ~34.5 % assimilation of pre-existing granites accompanied by fractional crystallization during the ascent of the magma. The contamination of mantle wedge-derived melts with crust of the active continental margin of the Karakoram most likely enhanced the high peraluminous nature of the rhyolite magma, as has been constrained by assimilation fractional crystallization modelling. Two granite samples from the contact of the Shyok Metamorphic Complex and Karakoram Batholith indicate that the post-collisional Miocene magmatism was not only confined along the Karakoram Fault zone but also extends ~30 km beyond the Shyok–Muglib strand.

A novel design of compact and light-weight horn mounted cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (CDRA) fed by substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) resonator has been investigated for high gain and multiband applications. SIW resonator contains two closely spaced longitudinal slots of equal length and unequal width to excite the CDRA. These slots are responsible for introducing triple resonating bands. The excited mode in dielectric resonator by longitudinal slots is EH11δ mode. The achieved impedance bandwidths are 65, 180, and 240 MHz at resonant frequencies 9.78, 10.58, and 11.84 GHz, respectively, for |S11| <−10 dB. Copper-taped horn enhances the gain of antenna more than 2 dB for all resonating bands. The measured peak value of gain is 9.3 dBi at ~11.84 GHz.

As part of a landscape-scale programme for conserving tigers Panthera tigris the Khata corridor was established between Bardia National Park in Nepal and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in India in early 2000. We examined its functionality by comparing the status of tigers and prey in the corridor and in the adjacent National Park, using camera trapping, transect sampling and diet analysis of scats. Tiger movement was inferred from the photographs, and tiger–human conflict was assessed by means of questionnaires and interviews. The corridor harboured transient individuals as well as resident, breeding tigers. Tigers with core areas in the corridor were also recorded in the two protected areas, and vice versa. Wild prey was 3–4 times more abundant in the area of the National Park bordering the corridor than in the corridor itself, and domestic livestock constituted 12–15% of the tigers’ food in the corridor. Livestock losses and human fatalities or injuries were relatively low compared to within the buffer zones of the National Parks. Despite such problems and restrictions on grazing and extraction of natural resources, local residents were generally positive towards tigers and the corridor. The successful establishment of the corridor and the positive attitudes of local people were attributable to community development programmes initiated to compensate for the imposed restrictions, financed by the government and national and international organizations. By linking Bardia National Park and Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary via the Khata corridor, a protected tiger landscape of c. 3,000 km2 was established in west-central Nepal and northern India.

SnO2-Fe2O3 composite thin films were deposited on quartz substrate at 650 °C by pulsed laser deposition with Fe2O3 content varying between 0 and 50 wt.%. The effect of increasing Fe2O3 content on structural, optical and electrical properties of SnO2-Fe2O3 films were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that the nature of deposited composite films can be tune from crystalline to amorphous with increase in the Fe2O3 content. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies confirm the presence of SnO2 and Fe2O3 in the microstructure. Atomic force microscopy studies of the deposited films indicate that RMS roughness vary between 114.4 and 1.48 nm. The average optical transmittance decreases from 92 to 72% with increasing Fe2O3 content of the deposited films. The optical bandgap was decreased from 3.69 to 3.31 eV with increase in Fe2O3 content. The minimum resistivity was observed 3.71 × 10−2 Ω cm for the 30 wt.% Fe2O3 composite film. The low resistivity and high transmittance in the visible region enables these films suitable for optoelectronic applications.
