Given $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}>1/n$, let ${\mathcal{S}}_{n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F})$ denote the classical set of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$-approximable points in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, which consists of $\mathbf{x}\in \mathbb{R}^{n}$ that lie within distance $q^{-\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}-1}$ from the lattice $(1/q)\mathbb{Z}^{n}$ for infinitely many $q\in \mathbb{N}$. In pioneering work, Kleinbock and Margulis showed that for any non-degenerate submanifold ${\mathcal{M}}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and any $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}>1/n$ almost all points on ${\mathcal{M}}$ are not $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$-approximable. Numerous subsequent papers have been geared towards strengthening this result through investigating the Hausdorff measure and dimension of the associated null set ${\mathcal{M}}\cap {\mathcal{S}}_{n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F})$. In this paper we suggest a new approach based on the Mass Transference Principle of Beresnevich and Velani [A mass transference principle and the Duffin–Schaeffer conjecture for Hausdorff measures. Ann. of Math. (2) 164(3) (2006), 971–992], which enables us to find a sharp lower bound for $\dim {\mathcal{M}}\cap {\mathcal{S}}_{n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F})$ for any $C^{2}$ submanifold ${\mathcal{M}}$ of $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ and any $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$ satisfying $1/n\leqslant \unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}<1/m$. Here $m$ is the codimension of ${\mathcal{M}}$. We also show that the condition on $\unicode[STIX]{x1D70F}$ is best possible and extend the result to general approximating functions.

Let 𝒟=(dn)∞n=1 be a sequence of integers with dn≥2, and let (i,j) be a pair of strictly positive numbers with i+j=1. We prove that the set of x∈ℝ for which there exists some constant c(x)≧0 such that is one-quarter winning (in the sense of Schmidt games). Thus the intersection of any countable number of such sets is of full dimension. This, in turn, establishes the natural analogue of Schmidt’s conjecture within the framework of the de Mathan–Teulié conjecture, also known as the “mixed Littlewood conjecture”.

Let A be an n×m matrix with real entries. Consider the set BadA of x∈[0,1)n for which there exists a constant c(x)>0 such that for any q∈ℤm the distance between x and the point {Aq} is at least c(x)|q|−m/n. It is shown that the intersection of BadA with any suitably regular fractal set is of maximal Hausdorff dimension. The linear form systems investigated in this paper are natural extensions of irrational rotations of the circle. Even in the latter one-dimensional case, the results obtained are new.

Let T:J \to J be an expanding rational map of the Riemann sphere acting on its Julia set J and f:J\to \mathbb{R} denote a Hölder continuous function satisfying f(x) > \log|T^\prime(x)| for all x in J. Then for any point z_0 in J define the set D_{z_0}(f) of ‘well-approximable’ points to be the set of points in J which lie in the Euclidean ball

for infinitely many pairs (y,n) satisfying T^n(y)=z_0. In our 1997 paper, we calculated the Hausdorff dimension of D_{z_0} (f). In the present paper, we shall show that the Hausdorff measure \mathcal{H}^s of this set is either zero or infinite. This is in line with the general philosophy that all ‘naturally’ occurring sets of well-approximable points should have zero or infinite Hausdorff measure.

For any pair $i,j\ge 0$ with $i+j=1$ let ${\mathbf Bad}(i,j)$ denote the set of pairs $(\alpha,\beta)\in {\bb R}^2$ for which $\max\{\|q\alpha\|^{1/i}\|q\beta\|^{1/j}\}>c/q$ for all $q\in {\bb N}$ . Here $c=c(\alpha,\beta)$ is a positive constant. If $i=0$ the set ${\mathbf Bad}(0, 1)$ is identified with ${\bb R}\times {\mathbf Bad}$ where ${\mathbf Bad}$ is the set of badly approximable numbers. That is, ${\mathbf Bad}(0, 1)$ consists of pairs $(\alpha, \beta)$ with $\alpha\in {\bb R}$ and $\beta\in {\mathbf Bad}$ If $j=0$ the roles of $\alpha$ and $\beta$ are reversed. It is proved that the set ${\mathbf Bad}(1,0)\cap {\mathbf Bad} (0,1)\cap {\mathbf Bad}(i,j)$ has Hausdorff dimension 2, that is, full dimension. The method easily generalizes to give analogous statements in higher dimensions.

Let T be a d×d matrix with integral coefficients. Then T determines a self-map of the d-dimensional torus X = ℝd/ℤd. Choose for each natural number n a ball B(n) in X and suppose that B(n+1) has smaller radius than B(n) for all n. Now let W be the set of points x ∈ X such that Tn(x) ∈ B(n) for infinitely many n ∈ ℕ. The Hausdorff dimension of W is studied by analogy with the Jarník–Besicovitch theorem on the dimension of the set of well-approximable real numbers. The dimension depends on the quantity

A complete description is given only when the matrix is diagonalizable over ℚ. In other cases a result is obtained for sufficiently large τ. The results, in as far as they go, show that the Hausdorff dimension of W is a strictly decreasing, continuous function of τ which is piecewise of the form (Aτ+B)/(Cτ+D). The numbers A, B, C and D which arise in this way are typically sums of logarithms of the absolute values of eigenvalues of T.

1·1. Groups of the first kind. In [11], Patterson proved a hyperbolic space analogue of Khintchine's theorem on simultaneous Diophantine approximation. In order to state Patterson's theorem, some notation and terminology are needed. Let ‖x‖ denote the usual Euclidean norm of a vector x in k+1, k + 1-dimensional Euclidean space, and let be the unit ball model of k + 1-dimensional hyperbolic space with Poincaré metric ρ. A non-elementary geometrically finite group G acting on Bk + 1 is a discrete subgroup of Möb (Bk+l), the group of orientation preserving Mobius transformations preserving Bk + 1, for which there exists some convex fundamental polyhedron with finitely many faces. Since G is non-elementary, the limit set L(G) of G – the set of limit points in the unit sphere Sk of any orbit of G in Bk+1 – is uncountable. The group G is said to be of the first kind if L(G) = Sk and of the second kind otherwise.
