The population size structure and adult sex ratio were recorded for four indigenous and one introduced species of terrestrial isopod from southern Africa. Interspecific variation was considerable with either discrete or continuous distributions indicative of the production of separate cohorts or continuous recruitment. Intraspecific variation was also considerable particularly in species such as Aphiloscia vilis which can be found in diverse habitats. Sex ratios were consistently female biased, a result consistent with observations made on temperate species. These observations, and a consideration of sexual dimorphism based on body mass, suggest that phenotypic plasticity may be an important tactic in the life histories of tropical woodlice and that in some populations the potential exists for strong sexual competition and complex mating systems.

Measurements of reproductive allocation, fertility and iteroparity were made on females of four species of woodlice (Isopoda: Oniscidae) from southern Africa. In three of the species between-population comparisons were made. The average body mass of reproductive females was smaller than in temperate woodlice and because of a positive scaling between body mass and fertility: brood sizes were rarely larger than 30 young and usually between 5 and 20. Reproductive allocation ranged from 16 to 27% of female pre-birth live mass and differed significantly between species. Associations between reproductive allocation and body mass were all positive although only significant in two of the populations. A small number of females produced more than one brood during the study and iteroparity appears the most likely reproductive tactic in these species.

In woodlice a restriction on body size results in lower fecundity as brood size is ultimately determined by the size of the marsupium. It is postulated that a tactic of repeated reproduction, with a relatively conservative allocation of resources to each reproductive event to enhance survival probabilities, would be favoured, particularly in an environment where juvenile mortality and the chance of complete brood failure is high.

To determine whether the relative abundance of immature Ixodes dammini (the vector of Lyme disease and human babesiosis) is related to habitat structure, we examined tick burdens on their main host, the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus), in 4 structurally diverse sites on Great Island, Massachusetts, USA. Vegetation structure at each site was quantified with respect to 25 habitat variables. Principal components analysis was used to reduce this set of habitat variables to seven new and orthogonal variables. Immature tick abundance varied widely among grids. Regression analysis of tick burdens on the habitat principal components showed that larval burdens were related strongly to the density of woody vegetation and negatively to herbaceous vegetation. Nymphal burdens were related negatively to herbaceous vegetation, but the relationship was not as strong as in the case of larvae. An experimental reduction in the abundance of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus), the main host of adult ticks, substantially reduced tick burdens and altered their relationships to habitat structure. Nymphal burdens were unrelated to habitat structure following deer removal. Manipulating habitat structure may have utility as a control strategy against this important vector.

Amastigotes of 2 Leishmania species are reported from the Pakistani lizards Teratoscincus scincus (Gekkonidae) and Agama agilis (Agamidae) collected in western Baluchistan and north-central Sind, respectively. Parasites were seen only in blood cells, primarily within thrombocytes, and were detected on smears of peripheral blood. Slides made at 3-day intervals for 38 days from an infected hatchling T. scincus demonstrated an increase with time in the mean number of amastigotes/infected thrombocyte. No evidence of an infection focus in fixed cells of the viscera was found. It is suggested, in view of reports of amastigotes in circulating blood cells of hosts belonging to 5 genera, collected in 5 countries from India to France, that saurian Leishmania may behave simply as parasites of circulating blood cells, thus illustrating an early stage in the adaptation of leishmanias to the vertebrate host.

Many zoonotic disease agents are transmitted between hosts by arthropod vectors, including fleas, but few empirical studies of host-vector-microparasite dynamics have investigated the relative importance of hosts and vectors. This study investigates the dynamics of 4 closely related Bartonella species and their flea vectors in cyclic populations of field voles (Microtus agrestis) over 3 years. The probability of flea infestation was positively related to field vole density 12 months previously in autumn, but negatively related to more recent host densities, suggesting a dilution effect. The 4 Bartonella species exhibited contrasting dynamics. Only B. grahamii, showed a distinct seasonal pattern. Infection probability increased with field vole density for B. doshiae, B. taylorii and BGA (a previously unidentified species) and with density of coexisting wood mice for B. doshiae and B. grahamii. However, only the infection probability of BGA in spring was related to flea prevalence. B. doshiae and BGA were most common in older animals, but the other 2 were most common in non-reproductive hosts. Generally, host density rather than vector abundance appears most important for the dynamics of flea-transmitted Bartonella spp., possibly reflecting the importance of flea exchange between hosts. However, even closely related species showed quite different dynamics, emphasising that other factors such as population age structure can impact on zoonotic risk.

The emergence of Lyme borreliosis as a public health burden within the last two decades has stimulated renewed interest in tick-borne infections. This attention towards ticks, coupled with advances in detection technologies, has promoted the recognition of diverse emergent or potentially emerging infections, such as monocytic and granulocytic ehrlichiosis, local variants of spotted fever group rickettsioses, WA-1 babesiosis, or a Lyme disease mimic (Masters' Disease). The distribution of pathogens associated with well-described tick-borne zoonoses such as human babesiosis due to Babesia microti or B. divergens seems wider than previously thought. Bartonellae, previously known to be maintained by fleas, lice or sandflies, have been detected within ticks. Purported ‘new’ agents, mainly identified by sequencing of PCR products and comparison with those sequences present in GenBank, are being increasingly reported from ticks. We briefly review the diversity of these infectious agents, identify aetiological enigmas that remain to be solved, and provide a reminder about ‘old friends’ that should not be forgotten in our pursuit of novelty. We suggest that newly recognised agents or tick/pathogen associations receive careful scrutiny before being declared as potential public health burdens.

Paleohaemoproteus burmacis gen. n., sp. n. (Haemospororida: Plasmodiidae) is described from the abdominal cavity of a female biting midge (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) preserved in 100 million year old amber from Myanmar (Burma). The description is based on the developmental stages of oocysts and sporozoites. The fossil species differs from extant species of Haemoproteus by its wide range of oocyst sizes, small sporozoites and occurrence in an extinct species of biting midge. Numerous sporozoites in the abdominal cavity suggest that the biting midge was an effective vector of this malarial parasite. Characters of the biting midge suggest that the host was a large, cold-blooded vertebrate. This is the earliest record of a malaria parasite and first indication that Early Cretaceous reptiles were infected with haemosporidial parasites.

Babesia microti (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) has historically been considered a common parasite of Holarctic rodents. However, human babesiosis due to this species has generally been limited to the northeastern seaboard of the United States and Minnesota and Wisconsin. The absence of reports of B. microti babesiosis from sites where the agent is enzootic, such as in western Europe, remains unexplained. Previous work focusing on the 18S rDNA demonstrates little sequence diversity among samples from allopatric host populations across a wide geographical area. It may be that genetic diversity is underestimated due to sample size or the gene analysed. Accordingly, we collected blood or spleen samples from American or Eurasian animals with parasites that were morphologically consistent with B. microti, amplified the 18S rDNA and beta-tubulin gene, and conducted phylogenetic analysis. Surprisingly, what was considered to be ‘B. microti’ by microscopy appears to be a diverse species complex. We identify 3 distinct clades within this complex, including parasites from non-rodent hosts. Rodent parasites comprise 2 clades, one representing zoonotic isolates, and the other apparently maintained in microtine rodents, and therefore their morphological detection within animals from a site does not necessarily imply a risk to public health.
