SALTMED model performance was evaluated by comparing simulated and observed soil water content, dry matter (DM) yield, yield and water productivity (WP) data of field-grown bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) under Mediterranean climatic conditions irrigated with surface and subsurface drip systems. Simulation data were obtained from field experiments performed in 2016 and 2017. Treatments were full irrigation (I100), conventional deficit irrigation at 75 and 50% actual crop evapotranspiration (ETa; I75 and I50), regulated-deficit irrigation (RDI) and partial root-zone drying (PRD) at 50% ETa using surface (SfDI) and subsurface drip systems (SbDI) on a clay-loam soil, in a split-plot with four replications. Results showed that 56 and 29 mm less irrigation water was applied to SdDI100 in 2016 and 2017, respectively, than SfDI100; RDI used 27 and 77 mm less irrigation water than SfDI100 in experimental years, respectively. SbDI and SfDI performed similarly for bell pepper yield, DM and WP. However, the effect of irrigation treatments on yield, DM and WP was significant. I100 showed the highest yield (74.9 and 71.1 t/ha in 2016 and 2017, respectively), followed by RDI in 2016; I100, RDI and I75 produced greater yield than other treatments in 2017. PRD50 and I50 produced the least yield (49.8 and 45.9 t/ha in 2016 and 2017, respectively). SbPRD50 and SbI50 had the greatest WP value under SbDI in the experimental years. Results showed that the SALTMED model simulated yield, DM, soil water content and WP reasonably well (R2 = 0.95, 0.97, 0.98 and 0.74, respectively).

Determination of antibodies against ToRCH antigens at the beginning of pregnancy allows assessment of both the maternal immune status and the risks to an adverse pregnancy outcome. Age-standardised seroprevalences were determined in sera from 1009 women of childbearing age residing in Mexico, Brazil, Germany, Poland, Turkey or China using a multiparametric immunoblot containing antigen substrates for antibodies against Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1, HSV-2), Bordetella pertussis, Chlamydia trachomatis, parvovirus B19, Treponema pallidum and varicella zoster virus (VZV). Seroprevalences for antibodies against HSV-1 were >90% in samples from Brazil and Turkey, whereas the other four countries showed lower mean age-adjusted seroprevalences (range: 62.5–87.9%). Samples from Brazilian women showed elevated seroprevalences of antibodies against HSV-2 (40.1%), C. trachomatis (46.8%) and B. pertussis (56.6%) compared to the other five countries. Seroprevalences of anti-T. gondii antibodies (0.5%) and anti-parvovirus B19 antibodies (7.5%) were low in samples from Chinese women, compared to the other five countries. Samples from German women revealed a low age-standardised seroprevalence of anti-CMV antibodies (28.8%) compared to the other five countries. These global differences in immune status of women in childbearing age advocate country-specific prophylaxis strategies to avoid infection with ToRCH pathogens.

Cuticular damage of Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) pupae, caused by puncturing with a sterilized insect pin, resulted in enhanced susceptibility to the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema carpocapsae (Weiser), but cold shock (5 °C for 24 h) did not alter susceptibility. The additional avenue of entry for the nematode probably accounted for the increased mortality of the damaged pupae. In all treatments, some dead pupae contained Xenorhabdus nematophilus (Poinar and Thomas), the symbiotic bacterium of S. carpocapsae, but no nematodes. More nematode-killed pupae containing X. nematophilus but no nematodes were found in the cold-shock treatment than in the room-temperature control (62.6 versus 46.9%). In contrast, fewer nematode-killed pupae containing X. nematophilus but no nematodes were found in the damaged pupae compared with the undamaged control (25.0 versus 45.1%). Moreover, mortality of nematodes within the cadavers of cold-shocked insects was higher than in the cadavers of non-cold-shocked insects. These results suggest that the stressors, cold shock and cuticular damage, produce fundamentally different responses in insects exposed to them, and that the physiological state of the insect greatly influences nematode survival in the host and hence nematode recycling in the environment.

In this work, Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly Ethylene (UHMWPE) samples were implanted with W + C ion by using Metal-Vapour Vacuum Arc (MEVVA) ion implantation technique. Samples were implanted with W and C atoms with a fluence of 1017ion/cm2 and extraction voltage of 30 kV. Mechanism underlies this modification characterized with ATR-FTIR, UV-VIS-NIR Spectrum and Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS). Surface morphology of implanted and unimplanted samples were examined in nanoscale with AFM.

Summary

Background and objective: Arterial grafts are prone to vasospasm. Opioid analgesics are commonly used in the perioperative course of cardiac surgical procedures. Therefore, we investigated the direct effects of morphine, meperidine, fentanyl and remifentanil on the human radial artery. Methods: Radial artery segments, obtained from 20 patients, were precontracted with phenylephrine. Using the organ bath technique, the endothelium-independent vasodilatation was tested in vitro by addition of cumulative concentrations of morphine, meperidine, fentanyl and remifentanil in separate organ baths, in the presence or absence of naloxone. Indomethacin and NG-nitro-l-arginine methyl ester was added to all organ bath in order to determine the effects of prostaglandins and nitric oxide, respectively. Results: Morphine (10−8–10−4mol L−1), meperidine (10−10–10−6mol L−1), fentanyl (10−10–10−6mol L−1) and remifentanil (10−8–10−4mol L−1) caused a concentration-dependent vasorelaxation in the human being artery rings. The relaxations in the presence of naloxane did not change. The maximal relaxant effects of meperidine and fentanyl were significantly greater than those of morphine and remifentanil (P < 0.05). Conclusions: These findings indicate that morphine, meperidine, fentanyl and remifentanil produce concentration-dependent and endothelium-independent relaxations in human being radial artery rings. Meperidine and fentanyl are more potent relaxant agents than morphine and remifentanil in the human being radial artery in vitro.

Summary

Background and objective: A need exists for a safe and effective oral preanaesthetic medication for use in children undergoing elective surgery. The study sought to define the dose of oral ketamine that would facilitate induction of anaesthesia without causing significant side-effects.

Methods: We studied 80 children undergoing elective surgery under general anaesthesia who received oral ketamine 4, 6 or 8 mg kg−1 in a prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo controlled study. We compared the reaction to separation from parents, transport to the operating room, the response to intravenous cannula insertion and application of an anaesthetic facemask, the induction of anaesthesia and recovery from anaesthesia.

Results: In the group receiving ketamine 8 mg kg−1, the children were significantly calmer than those of the other groups, and anaesthesia induction was more comfortable. Recovery from anaesthesia was longer in the group receiving ketamine 8 mg kg−1 compared with the other groups, but no differences between the groups were observed after 2 h in the recovery room.

Conclusions: It is concluded that oral ketamine 8 mg kg−1 is an effective oral premedication in inpatient children undergoing elective surgery.

Background and objective: To compare the application of the cuffed oropharyngeal airway and the laryngeal mask airway on anaesthetized adult patients undergoing minor outpatient surgery.

Methods: One hundred patients received intravenous fentanyl, propofol and N2O for the induction and maintenance of anaesthesia. The patients were randomly divided into two groups: a cuffed oropharyngeal airway group (n = 50) and a laryngeal mask airway group (n = 50). After insertion of the device, fibreoptic laryngoscopy was attempted and the degree of success scored. We then compared the first application success rate of both procedures while judging airway intervention requirement, fibreoptic scores, adverse airway events and haemodynamic tolerance.

Results: Both devices had an almost similar first-time placement rate (cuffed oropharyngeal airway 84% versus laryngeal mask airway 96%). The cuffed oropharyngeal airway required a higher number of airway interventions (P < 0.001). The laryngeal mask airway had a significantly better fibreoptic view compared with the cuffed oropharyngeal airway (P < 0.001). However, the number of adverse airway events was lower in the cuffed oropharyngeal airway group; there were no significant differences in adverse events and haemodynamic variables between the said two groups.

Conclusions: The results suggest that the cuffed oropharyngeal airway was an effective alternative airway in spontaneously breathing patients during short procedures.

The production of potent toxins by bloom-, scum- and mat-forming cyanobacteria, in fresh-, brackish and marine waters, appears to be a global phenomenon. Cyanobacterial toxins can also be produced by cyanobacteria from terrestrial sources. The range and number of known cyanobacterial toxins are increasing apace as associated poisoning incidents are investigated, and increasingly powerful analytical methods are applied to complement toxicity-based studies on both natural samples and laboratory isolates of cyanobacteria. Water quality management to reduce toxic cyanobacterial mass developments, and schemes to mitigate the potential effects of cyanobacterial toxins, require an understanding of the occurrence and properties of the toxins and of the exposure routes via which the toxins present risks to health. Here, we review advances in the recognition of cyanobacterial toxins and their toxicity, and of the exposure routes with reference to human health, namely via skin contact, inhalation, haemodialysis and ingestion (the oral route).

Electronic properties of silicon-carbon and silicon-sodium binary clusters, produced by laser vaporization, were investigated by photoelectron spectroscopic or photoionization spectroscopic method. The photoelectron spectra of the C1Sim-1- clusters are similar to those of pure Sim- clusters in the peak positions and their envelopes, which is attributed to the similar electronic structure of Si and C atoms, leading to a similar geometry. In contrast, the similarity in the photoelectron spectra is not observed between Cn- and Cn-1Si1 clusters, which is attributed to a change in their geometry; from chain to ring.

The ionization energies (Ei) of the SinNam clusters (l≤n≤15) were determined from the threshold energy of their ionization efficiency curves. The clear parallelism between the ionization energy of SinNa and the electron affinity (EA) of Sin is found; there are three local minima at n=4, 7 and 10. This implies the facts that (1) the structure of the SinNa clusters keeps the frame of the corresponding Sin cluster unchanged and that (2) the parentage of singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) of SinNa is the LUMO of Sin. Furthermore, the EAs of SinNa (4≤n≤7) were determined from the threshold energy in the photoelectron spectra of SinNa". When the EAs of SinNa are compared with those of Sin, the EAs decrease at n=4-6, but the EA increases at n=7. The results of ab initio calculation show that the Na atom is bound by two Si atoms (bridge site) at n=4-6, whereas it is bound by one Si atom (apex site) at n=7.
