The Weches Formation of the Claiborne Group (Eocene) in northeast Texas consists of clayey sandstones and mudrocks, both with variable proportions of dark green to brown clay peloids deposited in a marginal to open marine setting on the Gulf Coast margin. The composition of the dark green peloids, from two localities, has been investigated using X-ray diffraction, back-scattered electron microscopy with X-ray analysis, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS), Mössbauer spectroscopy, chemical analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. These peloids were previously described on the basis of their color as glauconite (Yancey and Davidoff, 1994); our results, however, show that the dark green indurated pellets are predominantly composed of mixed-layer clays with a high proportion of Fe-rich 7 Å serpentine layers coexisting with a mixed-layer phase containing glauconite, nontronite and vermiculite layers, in addition to discrete illite and kaolinte. Analyses by EELS of single particles with a chemical composition consistent with them being the Fe-rich clay indicate that the Fe is >95% ferric, while Mössbauer analyses of the bulk magnetically separated fraction for the same samples indicates a ferric iron content of ∼60–70%, despite the variable relative proportions of expandable and 7 Å layers. Taking into account that there is a significant amount of 2:1 layers containing ferric Fe, we interpret these data as indicating that the Fe in the 7 Å layers has a significant amount of Fe2+ even taking into account the high ferric Fe ratio from the EELS analysis when the coexisting 2:1 layers are considered. Thus, these 1:1 layers are closer to berthierine in composition than to odinite. The vermiculite layers in the Texas clay may indicate partial ‘verdinization’ of expandable 2:1 clay. A possible reaction is smectite → vermiculite → berthierine-like phase. We estimate a temperature of 20°C for the seawater in which the Texas clay formed, the lower end of the range for modern occurrences of odinite.

Previous research has shown that pre-parturient primiparous pigs (gilts) housed in behaviourally restrictive farrowing crates without straw redirect their nest-building behaviour to non-manipulable substrates such as the bars of the crate. These gilts also show elevated plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and Cortisol levels, particularly around the peak of nest-building activity, when compared to gilts in larger pens that have been provided with a manipulable substrate (straw). It remains unclear whether these behavioural and physiological responses to crating result from the lack of a suitable nesting substrate or from the restricted space. This study investigated the effects of space (crate [C] versus pen [P] and straw (straw [S] versus no straw [NS]) using a 2 × 2 factorial design. Thirty-four gilts were implanted with an indwelling jugular catheter at around 12 days before parturition. They were moved to one of the four environments five days before parturition, and blood sampling and recording of behaviour were carried out during the pre-parturient period. Penned gilts (P), irrespective of straw availability, spent more time standing and walking and performed more total substrate-directed behaviour than crated (C) gilts. When straw was not available to penned gilts, a large proportion of their substrate-directed behaviour was redirected to the floor. Space also had an effect on ACTH and Cortisol levels across the entire pre-parturient phase, with C gilts having higher levels than P gilts irrespective of straw availability, but particularly so at the peak of nest-building activity. There was no effect of straw on ACTH or Cortisol levels. Overall, it appears that increased space, perhaps through allowing locomotion, increases substrate-directed behaviour of pre-parturient gilts. When space is available but straw is absent, pre-parturient gilts redirect their nest-building behaviour to the floor. The ability to express substrate-directed behaviour as a result of increased space is reflected in lower levels of indicators of physiological stress.

Lamb vigour at birth (i.e. time to stand after delivery) is known to be affected by a number of maternal factors, such as parity and litter size (Dwyer, 2002), as well as lamb breed (Dwyer et al., 1996), and is related to subsequent lamb survival (Dwyer et al., 2001). It is likely that these factors act before birth to influence lamb development and may exert their effects through differences in placental development and function. The purpose of this experiment was to examine the effects of ewe parity, litter size and ewe breed on placental components, and relate these to lamb behavioural development at birth.

Atherosclerotic lesions are heterogeneous in terms of their cellular and lipid composition. While heterogeneity can be the result of stochastic noise, an alternate hypothesis is that the differences observed among individual lesions arise from deterministic chaos. Five New Zealand white rabbits were fed a diet containing 0.15% cholesterol for 6 months. Segments of the aorta were fixed in formalin, stained en bloc with Nile red (NR) and filipin (F), and en face fluorescence microscopy was used to map the distribution of lipids in fatty streaks (FS). The smallest lesions detected stained only with filipin. Larger lesions stained with both Nile red and filipin and two distinct regions of Nile red staining, NR-orange (rich in polar lipids) and NR-yellow (rich in neutral lipids) were observed. Digital overlays revealed a “nested” arrangement of F, NR-orange, and NR-yellow. The lesions also showed marked heterogeneity in their lipid composition. Thus, although initially similar, as FS increased in size, their composition became divergent, suggesting that the ultimate composition of a FS was highly sensitive to its initial composition. Sensitivity to initial condition is one of the hallmarks of deterministic systems. To determine if FS were self-similar, another hallmark of deterministic chaos, the borders of the different regions defined by NR and F staining were subjected to fractal analysis. For each lesion, the borders of the F, NR-orange, and NR-yellow regions were found to be fractal. Return maps were constructed for the differently stained regions. Analysis of the entire 104-lesion data set showed that although the data could be described by a four-parameter logistic model, the population was not chaotic. However, return maps drawn for the maxima of the NR-orange stained regions demonstrated chaos. Taken together, the data suggest that deterministic chaos plays a role in the evolution of atheromatous disease but, in common with most biologic systems, as the lesions progress, chaotic behavior is dampened.

This study examined the temporal relationships between behavioural activity and hormones associated with stress in gilts farrowing in two environments. Thirty-one Large White × Landrace gilts with indwelling jugular catheters were blood sampled daily (08.00 and 16.00 h) from 10 days before their expected parturition date (EPD). Five days before EPD they were moved to either a farrowing crate (C) with no bedding, or a pen (P) (2·5 m × 3·0 m) with straw provided and were blood sampled daily at 08.00, 12.00 and 16.00 h. Around 12 h before the onset of farrowing an extension was fitted to the catheter and blood samples were taken remotely at 30-min intervals. The posture of the gilts was recorded using 5-min scan samples over the 24 h pre-farrowing. The proportion of scans standing (an index of activity) was strongly affected by time (P < 0·001) with peak levels at approximately 8 h pre-farrowing in both treatments, and by treatment (0·25 v. 0·33 (s.e.d. 0·03) for C and P gilts respectively; P < 0·05). Plasma cortisol concentrations also increased before farrowing (P < 0·001) reaching a peak at 12 to 6 h pre-farrowing. Crated gilts had higher cortisol concentrations than, penned gilts (overall mean 41·5 v. 30·7 (s.e.d. 3·8) [μg/l for C and P gilts respectively; P < 0·05) at 24 to 12 (P < 0·05), 12 to 6 (P < 0·01) and 6 to 2 (P < 0·05) h pre-farrowing. Plasma ACTH concentration showed a similar pattern to cortisol over the pre-parturient period, peaking at 12 h pre-farrowing in both treatments (time: P < 0·001); crated gilts had significantly higher concentrations of ACTH at 6h pre-farrowing only (P < 0·05). Plasma β-endorphin concentrations also showed a gradual rise (P < 0·001) towards parturition; however no treatment differences were seen. These results suggest that the pituitary-adrenal (PA) axis is stimulated during pre-farrowing activity irrespective of farrowing environment. Crates, without bedding, further stimulate the PA axis over the pre-farrowing period perhaps by preventing nest-building. The rise in Q-endorphin may be involved in an endogenous defence against parturition pain.

Cationic amphiphilic drugs (CAD) are structurally characterized by their hydrophobic ring structure and hydrophilic side chain. While there is little known about the effect of CAD in dogs, studies in animal models have shown that over 30 CAD with various pharmacological activities have the ability to induce phospholipid-like inclusions in peripheral blood cells and in organs such as lung, liver, eye and spleen. Two CAD used for treatment of human disease are amiodarone, prescribed for arrythmia, and chloroquine, an antimalarial. The purpose of this study was to determine if these compounds induce cytoplasmic phospholipid inclusions in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), polymorphonuclear lymphocytes (PMN), alveloar macrophages, liver and retina in dogs.

Samples were collected from male beagle dogs after 6 weeks of oral dosing with amiodarone (75 mg/kg/day) or chloroquine (75 mg/kg/day). Buffy coats were prepared from peripheral blood and fixed with 3% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 M phosphate buffer, pH 7.2. Alveolar macrophages were recovered from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid by centrifugation and the pellets fixed with buffered 2.5% glutaraldehyde-2% formaldehyde.

Endogenous opioids are known to inhibit oxytocin release from the neurohypopysis (Bicknell et al, 1982). This mechanism has been suggested to be involved in the timing of parturition and delivery of young (Leng et al, 1985). Environmental disturbance in the rat (Leng et al, 1988) and pig (Lawrence et al, 1992) during parturition resulted in a naloxone reversible increase in birth interval, and an increase in plasma oxytocin concentration after naloxone treatment suggesting stress-induced opioid inhibition of oxytocin. Pain, which is associated with parturition, results in increased opioid activity and may be involved in the inhibition of oxytocin. Pregnancy-induced analgesia has been shown in the human (Whipple et al, 1990) and the rat (Gintzler, 1980), with the latter suggesting involvement of an opioid mechanism. This study aimed to determine whether an increase in pain threshold occurred over pregnancy and parturition in the pig and whether this was opioid-mediated.

Good dispersion of oxide ceramics in organic solvents can be achieved using many different dispersants. Several types of dispersants, including fatty acids, coupling agents, polar aromatic compounds and polymers, are discussed to illustrate the important phenomena. Many new problems arise in actual slips during ceramics processing; these are briefly discussed.
