Friction stir welding is a prominent technique for making defect-free joints of aluminum alloys. The aluminum alloy AA2014-T6 finds wide applications in aerospace, naval and automotive applications. This paper attempts to predict the tensile strength and hardness characteristics of friction stir welded aluminum alloy AA2014-T6 by a fuzzy logic model. Friction stir welding was carried out by varying tool rotational speed (700, 1,000 and 1,400rpm), welding speed (20, 35, 50mm/min) and axial force (10, 12, 14kN) at three levels. The tensile strength and hardness characteristics of the welded specimens were obtained from the experiments conducted as per Taguchi’s L27 orthogonal array. A Mamdani-type fuzzy logic model was developed to predict the tensile strength and nugget hardness characteristics of the FSW joints. The fuzzy model was evaluated by comparing the results of confirmation experiments with that of the results predicted by the model. The confirmation experiments were conducted with a new set of parameters other than the ones used for building the model. The fuzzy model exhibits marginal variations of 2.53% for tensile strength and 2.42% for weld nugget hardness compared to the results of the conformation experiments.

Plant height in chickpea is a multivariate, dynamic trait, and shows differences in growth rate at different stages of plant development in different genotypes. In the majority of plant-breeding experiments, the phenotypic data on a quantitative trait measured at a fixed time point (generally at maturity) are used for quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping. However, this method can result in missing important/major QTLs which are expressed at different time points and are not expressed at maturity. In the current study, using a set of 49 desi chickpea genotypes sown at three different durations for two successive years, we observed that heritability for plant height was highest at the 2 month stage in the normal sown trial, and at the 1 month stage in late-sown trials. However, heritability drastically declines at maturity, particularly due to heat stress with an increase in temperatures during the growing period. In the association analysis, it was also observed that almost all the marker–trait associations (MTAs) identified using endpoint phenotypes were identified using data obtained at different intervals. In addition, some novel and stage-specific MTAs were identified using phenotypic data recorded at monthly intervals. The results highlight the importance of multistage phenotyping for dynamic traits like plant height in germplasm characterization programmes.

The plasma membranes of cells are thin viscous sheets in which some transmembrane proteins have two-dimensional mobility and some are immobilized. Previous studies have shown that immobile proteins retard the short-time diffusivity of mobile particles through hydrodynamic interactions and that steric effects of immobile proteins reduce the long-time diffusivity in a model that neglects hydrodynamic interactions. We present a rigorous derivation of the long-time diffusivity of a single mobile protein interacting hydrodynamically and thermodynamically with an array of immobile proteins subject to periodic boundary conditions. This method is based on a finite element method (FEM) solution of the probability density of the mobile protein diffusing with a position-dependent mobility determined through a multipole solution of Stokes equations. The simulated long-time diffusivity in square arrays decreases as the spacing in the array approaches the particle size in a manner consistent with a lubrication analysis. In random arrays, steric effects lead to a percolation threshold volume fraction above which long-time diffusion is arrested. The FEM/multipole approach is used to compute the long-time diffusivity far away from this threshold. An approximate analysis of mobile protein diffusion through a network of pores connected by bonds with resistances determined by the FEM/multipole calculations is then used to explore higher immobile area fractions and to evaluate the finite simulation cell size scaling behaviour of diffusion near the percolation threshold. Surprisingly, the ratio of the long-time diffusivity to the spatially averaged short-time diffusivity in these two-dimensional fixed arrays is higher in the presence of hydrodynamic interactions than in their absence. Finally, the implications of this work are discussed, including the possibility of using the methods developed here to investigate more complex diffusive phenomena observed in cell membranes.

Introduction: Abdominal pain is one of the most frequent reasons for an emergency department (ED) visit. Most cases are functional and no therapy has proven effective. Our objective was to determine if hyoscine butylbromide (HBB) (BuscopanTM) is effective for children who present to the ED with functional abdominal pain. Methods: We conducted a randomized, blinded, superiority trial comparing HBB 10 mg plus acetaminophen placebo to oral acetaminophen 15 mg/kg (max 975 mg) plus HBB placebo using a double-dummy approach. We included children 8-17 years presenting to the ED at London Health Sciences Centre with colicky abdominal pain rated >40 mm on a 100 mm visual analog scale (VAS). The primary outcome was VAS pain score at 80 minutes post-administration. Secondary outcomes included adverse effects; caregiver satisfaction with pain management using a five-item Likert scale; recidivism and missed surgical diagnoses within 24-hours of discharge. Analysis was based on intention to treat. Results: We analyzed 225 participants (112 acetaminophen; 113 HBB). The mean (SD) age was 12.4 (3.0) years and 148/225 (65.8%) were females. Prior to enrollment, the median (IQR) duration of pain prior was 2 (4.5) hours and analgesia was provided to 101/225 (44.9%) of participants. The mean (SD) pre-intervention pain scores in the acetaminophen and HBB groups were 62.7 (15.9) mm and 60.3 (17.3) mm, respectively. At 80 minutes, the mean (SD) pain scores in the acetaminophen and HBB groups were 30.1 (28.8) mm and 29.4 (26.4) mm, respectively and there were no significant differences adjusting for pre-intervention scores (p = 0.96). The median (IQR) caregiver satisfaction was high in the acetaminophen [5 (2)] and HBB [5 (1)] groups (p = 0.79). The median (IQR) length of stay between acetaminophen [235 (101)] and HBB [234 (103)] was not significantly different (p = 0.53). The proportion of participants with a return visit for abdominal pain was 4/112 (3.5%) in the acetaminophen group and 6/113 (5.3%) in the HBB group. The most common adverse effect was nausea (9% in each group) and there were no significant differences in adverse effects between acetaminophen (26/112, 23.2%) and HBB (31/113, 27.4%) (p = 0.52). There were no missed surgical diagnoses. Conclusion: For children with presumed functional abdominal pain who present to the ED, both acetaminophen and HBB produce a clinically important (VAS < 30 mm) reduction in pain and should be routinely considered in this clinical setting.

We examine the problem of prescribing the macroscale boundary condition to the solute convective–diffusive mass transport equation at a heterogeneous surface consisting of reactive circular disks distributed uniformly on a non-reactive surface. The reaction rate at the disks is characterized by a first-order kinetics. This problem was examined by Shah & Shaqfeh (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 782, 2015, pp. 260–299) who obtained the boundary condition in terms of an effective first-order rate constant, which they determined as a function of the Péclet number $Pe=\dot{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}}a^{2}/D$, the fraction $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ of the surface area occupied by the reactive disks and the non-dimensional reaction rate constant $K=ka/D$. Here, $a$ is the radius of the disks, $D$ is the solute diffusivity, $\dot{\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FE}}$ is the wall shear rate and $k$ is the first-order surface-reaction rate constant. Their analysis assumed that $Pe$ and $K$ are $O(1)$ while the ratio of the microscale $a$ to the macroscale $H$ is small. The macroscale transport process is convection–diffusion dominated under these conditions. We examine here the case when the non-dimensional numbers based on the macroscale $H$ are $O(1)$. In this limit the microscale transport problem is reaction rate dominated. We find that the boundary condition can be expressed in terms of an effective rate constant only up to $O(\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})$, where $\unicode[STIX]{x1D716}=a/H$. Higher-order expressions for the mass flux involve both the macroscopic concentration and its surface gradient. The $O(\unicode[STIX]{x1D716})$ microscale problem is relatively easy to solve as the convective effects are unimportant and it is possible to obtain analytical expressions for the effective rate constant as a function of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D719}$ for both periodic and random arrangement of the disks without having to solve the boundary integral equation as was done by Shah and Shaqfeh. The results thus obtained are shown to be in good agreement with those obtained numerically by Shah and Shaqfeh for $Pe=0$. In a separate study, Shah et al. (J. Fluid Mech., vol. 811, 2017, pp. 372–399) examined the inverse-geometry problem in which the disks are inert and the rest of the surface surrounding them is reactive. We show that the two problems are related when $Pe=0$ and $kH/D=O(1)$. Finally, a related problem of determining the current density at a surface consisting of an array of microelectrodes is also examined and the analytical results obtained for the current density are found to agree well with the computed values obtained by solving the integral equation numerically by Lucas et al. (SIAM J. Appl. Maths, vol. 57(6), 1997, pp. 1615–1638) over a wide range of parameters characterizing this problem.

Background: Children with abdominal pain in the emergency department (ED) are at particular risk of suboptimal analgesia due to fears of missing appendicitis and absent guidelines. Many still experience pain at discharge. Acetaminophen is the most commonly used analgesic and efficacy of hyoscine butylbromide (HBB) is supported by adult evidence. However, no evidence exists for either agent in children with abdominal pain. Objective: To determine if HBB is superior to acetaminophen for abdominal pain in children. Methods: We will consecutively recruit children 8-17 years presenting to the ED with presumed non-surgical abdominal pain rated >4/10 on the Faces Pain Scale – Revised (FPS-R) and described as colicky, excluding:-Suspected appendicitis or bowel obstruction-Anticholinergic, analgesic, or antispasmodic <12 hours-Peritoneal inflammation-Unable to swallow pills-Hypersensitivity to either intervention-Medically unstable-Previous bowel obstruction, abdominal surgery, myasthenia gravis, liver disease, glaucoma, or recent abdominal trauma (<48 hours)-Toxin ingestion (<24 hours)-Vomiting-Pregnancy Randomization and allocation concealment will be pharmacy-controlled and performed using a computerized random number generator and sequentially numbered, opaque, sealed envelopes, respectively. The physician, research assistant, nurse, and participant will be blinded. Due to perceptible differences, participants will be randomized in a double-dummy approach to:-HBB 10 mg tablet + acetaminophen placebo OR-Acetaminophen 15 mg/kg liquid (maximum 975 mg) + HBB placebo. The primary outcome will be the difference from baseline on the FPS-R at 120 minutes, reflecting HBB’s time to peak plasma concentration. The FPS-R has been validated in children >five years. Secondary outcomes include:-Pain scores at 15, 30, 45, 60, 80, 100, and 120 minutes post-intervention (FPS-R and 100 mm visual analog scale)-Discharge pain score-Rescue analgesia-Time to achieve a 20% reduction in pain-Adverse effects-Recidivism <48 hours-Missed surgical diagnoses (National Ambulatory Care Reporting System (NACRS) database)-Caregiver satisfaction (five-item Likert scale). Using the intention to treat principle, ordinal, ratio, and categorical data will be analyzed using the Mann-Whitney, paired t-test, and Pearson’s chi-square, respectively and summarized using 95% confidence intervals. Assuming a standard deviation of 2 faces, 83 children per group will be required to detect a 1-face difference at 5% significance with 90% power. Increasing by 20% equals 100 participants per group. P values <0.05 will be considered significant. An institutional audit revealed 380 eligible patients per year during research assistant availability. Given a 30% refusal rate, we expect five participants enrolled per week for 40 weeks. Importance: Our findings will guide evidence-based analgesic choices for children with non-surgical abdominal pain in the ED.

Field experiments were conducted to evaluate control of 90- to 100-cm-tall ragweed parthenium in a noncropped situation in Haryana State, India, during 2000 and 2001. Atrazine, 2,4-D ethyl ester, atrazine plus 2,4-D, metribuzin, metsulfuron, chlorimuron, glufosinate with and without surfactant, glyphosate with and without surfactant, and glyphosate formulations MON 8793 and 8794 were sprayed on ragweed parthenium. Also, the effect of water quality was studied with flat-fan and flood-fan nozzles using glyphosate and its formulation MON 8793 against ragweed parthenium and associated weeds. Glyphosate MON 8793 and 8794 at 3.6 kg ae/ha provided excellent control of ragweed parthenium followed by glyphosate at 2.7 or 5.4 kg/ha, with no recovery until 18 wk after treatment (WAT). Addition of 0.1% v/v surfactant (MON 0818) to glyphosate at 2.7 kg/ha provided similar control to that of glyphosate alone at 5.4 kg/ha. Other herbicides failed to provide satisfactory control of ragweed parthenium. In the water quality study, glyphosate at 2.7 and 5.4 kg/ha and glyphosate MON 8793 at 2.7 and 3.6 kg/ha provided similar control of ragweed parthenium at 18 WAT. Glyphosate was antagonized less by tap water (0.45 mM Ca) than canal (0.7 mM Ca) and hand-pump water (1 mM Ca). Neither glyphosate nor glyphosate MON 8793 provided good control of purple nutsedge, velvetleaf, garden spurge, threelobe false mallow, jimsonweed, giant milkweed, Indian jujube, or tropical spiderwort, but crowfootgrass, green foxtail, sprawling signalgrass, and spiny amaranth were controlled. Glyphosate at 5.4 kg/ha and glyphosate MON 8793 at 3.6 kg/ha provided more than 80% control of bermudagrass at 8 WAT, which was significantly better than the 2.7 kg/ha rate. Flat-fan nozzles provided better efficacy of applied herbicides than flood-fan nozzles at 4 WAT on ragweed parthenium.

A new tillodont, Anthraconyx hypsomylus, n. gen. n. sp., is described from the early Eocene Cambay Shale Formation at Vastan Lignite Mine, Gujarat, India. Anthraconyx hypsomylus is the smallest Eocene tillodont and is distinguished by having the most buccally hypsodont cheek teeth of any known esthonychine. The closest dental resemblances are to North American Esthonyx and Azygonyx and European Plesiesthonyx, providing further evidence of affinities between the Vastan local fauna and Euroamerican vertebrate faunas.

This study investigates the factors likely to affect an individual’s decision to enter farming after and/or while participating in an off-farm employment activity. Additionally, an ordered multivariate regression procedure was used to analyze the degree of importance of selected motivating reasons that were drivers of individuals’ decision to enter farming. Results indicate that individuals with lower education, children in the household, and older family members were more likely to have entered farming as an occupation. Findings further suggest that federal policies in the form of farm program payments may provide retired nonfarm workers incentives to enter farming in later life.

Nanostructured quantum well and quantum dot solar cells are being widely investigated as a means of extending infrared absorption and enhancing photovoltaic device performance. In this work, we describe the impact of nanostructured layer number on the performance of flexible, highvoltage InGaAs/GaAs quantum well solar cells. Multiple quantum well structures are observed to have a higher short circuit current but a lower open circuit voltage than similar single quantum well structures. Analysis of the underlying dark diode characteristics indicate that these highvoltage structures are limited by radiative recombination at high bias levels. The results of this study suggest that future development efforts should focus on maximizing the current generating capability of a limited number of nanostructured layers and minimizing recombination within the nanostructured absorber.

The objective of this study was to identify factors which contribute to the earnings' success of cash grain farms in the United States. The study analyzes three measures of success including net farm income per dollar of asset, operators' returns to labor and management, and operators' management income. Logit regression analysis shows that controlling variable costs, ownership, management ability, technology adoption, and diversification are important factors that influence success.

Since the introduction of clozapine, several novel antipsychotic agents have been introduced and more are in Phase II/III studies. Because these agents are used clinically as first-line treatment, we need to be more familiar with their side-effect profiles. This manuscript reviews the cardiovascular side effects of currently available novel antipsychotics. The medications reviewed include clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, and ziprasidone. Guidelines are suggested for the use of these medications in clinical practice.

Acquired brain injury (ABI) can lead to a constellation of higher-order executive problems, which can impact significantly on everyday behaviour. While some neuropsychological assessments are able to measure these impairments objectively, increasingly, clinicians are finding that a subset of their patients passes these tests while still exhibiting difficulties in day-to-day living. Calls have therefore been made to develop assessments that are more sensitive and that are more ecologically valid. In this study, in Experiment 1, a multiple errands task (MET) based around a business office was created to assess concurrently nine aspects of executive functioning (planning, prioritisation, selective-thinking, creative-thinking, adaptive-thinking, multi-tasking, action-based prospective memory (PM), event-based PM and time-based PM). This new paradigm, the Jansari assessment of Executive Functions (JEF©) showed a significant difference between six individuals with ABI and matched healthy controls; further, it showed that across the nine constructs there was a range of performance. In Experiment 2, JEF© was recreated in a virtual environment resembling a computer game, and it was found that this version significantly differentiated between 17 individuals with ABI and 30 healthy controls. These results suggest that the virtual version of JEF© could be used as a new assessment of executive function. The profile of performance across the nine constructs for each individual provides a wealth of objective information that could potentially inform targeted rehabilitation.

We report magneto-dielectric anomaly of the multiferroic (Bi0.95Nd0.05)(Fe0.97Mn0.03)O3 (BNFM) ceramic near Néel temperature. The ceramic pellets were synthesized by conventional solid state reaction route. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that most of the peaks shifted slightly towards higher Bragg’s angle compared to those of pure BiFeO3 and also confirmed the formation of rhombohedral phase. It also suggests that the small chemical substitution of Nd and Mn atoms at Bi and Fe sites of BiFeO3 (BFO) perovskite respectively does not alter the crystal structure. Temperature and frequency dependent dielectric response indicate large dielectric anomaly at 620 K, slightly below the known Néel temperature of BFO. The enhancement in dielectric properties of BNFM ceramic was observed as compared to BFO due to suppression of oxygen vacancies by the doping. Temperature dependent dielectric response in conjunction with Raman and thermo-analytical data show that the BNFM sample presents significant magneto-dielectric response around Néel temperture TN ∼ 620 K.

Long-term tillage and fertilizer experiments were conducted in rice in kharif followed by lentil in dry subhumid Inceptisols at Varanasi and Faizabad; horse gram at Phulbani and linseed at Ranchi in moist subhumid Alfisols in rabi during 2001 to 2010. The study was conducted to assess the effect of conventional tillage (CT), low tillage + interculture (LT1) and low tillage + herbicide (LT2) together with 100% N (organic) (F1), 50% N (organic) + 50% N (inorganic) (F2) and 100% N (inorganic) (F3) on productivity, profitability, rainwater and energy use efficiencies. The results at Varanasi revealed that CT was superior with mean yield of 2389 kg ha−1, while F1 was superior with 2378 kg ha−1 in rice. At Faizabad, CT was superior with mean rice yield of 1851 kg ha−1 and lentil yield of 977 kg ha−1, while F1 was superior with 1704 and 993 kg ha−1 of rice and lentil, respectively. At Phulbani, F2 was superior with rice yield of 1170 kg ha−1. At Ranchi, F2 with rice yield of 986 kg ha−1 and F3 with linseed yield of 224 kg ha−1 were superior. The regression model of crop seasonal rainfall and yield deviations indicated an increasing trend in rice yield over mean (positive deviation) with increase in rainfall at all locations; while a decreasing trend (negative deviation) was found for lentil at Faizabad, horse gram at Phulbani and linseed at Ranchi. Based on economic analysis, CTF1 at Varanasi and Faizabad, CTF2 at Phulbani and LT2F2 at Ranchi were superior.

A detailed analysis of leakage current density-gate voltage measurements of gate stacks composed of PLD grown ultra thin films of LaGdO3 (LGO) on p-type silicon substrates with 8.4 Å EOT is presented. Temperature dependent leakage measurements revealed that forward bias current was dominated by Schottky emission over trap assisted tunneling below 1.2 MV/cm and quantum mechanical tunneling above this field. The physical origin of the reverse bias current was found to be a combination of Schottky emission and trap assisted tunneling. Low leakage current densities in the range from 2.3×10-3 to 29×10-3 A/cm2 were recorded for films with EOT from 1.8 to 0.8 nm, that are at least four or more orders below the ITRS specifications and its SiO2 competitors.
