Caryocaridids are a unique representative of pelagic arthropods from the Ordovician period. They are typically found as flattened carapaces in mudstones and shales. This study reports on a species of caryocaridids, Soomicaris cedarbergensis, discovered in the Lower Ordovician of northwestern Xinjiang, NW China. The species shows the rare enrolled carapaces with a preserved cuticular ultrastructure. These specimens of caryocaridids from Xinjiang are the first reported in the Yili Block, and provide the substantial evidence that the paleogeographic distribution of caryocaridid phyllocarids could extend to the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. This species existed from the late Tremadocian until the end of the Ordovician (Hirnantian), making it the longest-ranging known species of caryocaridids. The carapace cuticle of S. cedarbergensis is composed of carbonate-fluorapatite and can be divided into three mineralized lamellae: outer, middle, and inner. The outer and inner lamellae each consist of three layers that correspond to the epicuticle, exocuticle, and endocuticle of extant crustacean carapaces. Moreover, the polygonal reticulation structure of the carapace in archaeostracans appears to be similar in shape and size to the hemolymph sinuses of leptostracans. This unique ultrastructure of the carapace cuticle in caryocaridids is believed to be better suited for a pelagic lifestyle.

Transmission of varicella occurs frequently in schools and households. We investigated the characteristics of varicella cases derived from within-household transmission and the modes of varicella transmission between school and household settings in Shanghai, China, from 2009 to 2018. Within-household transmission occurred in 278 households, of which 134 transmission events were between children. Sixty-one household varicella transmission events may be attributed to isolation procedures for infected students during school outbreaks, and 7.6% of school outbreaks were caused by schoolchildren cases derived from within-household transmission. The frequency of ‘school-household-school’ transmission adds an additional layer of complexity to the control of school varicella outbreaks. Administration of varicella vaccine as post-exposure prophylaxis after exposure is considered to be an effective measure to control varicella spread within households and schools.

This study aimed to describe the expression profiles of microRNAs (miRNAs) from mammary gland tissues collected from dairy cows with Streptococcus agalactiae-induced mastitis and to identify differentially expressed miRNAs related to mastitis. The mammary glands of Chinese Holstein cows were challenged with Streptococcus agalactiae to induce mastitis. Small RNAs were isolated from the mammary tissues of the test and control groups and then sequenced using the Solexa sequencing technology to construct two small RNA libraries. Potential target genes of these differentially expressed miRNAs were predicted using the RNAhybrid software, and KEGG pathways associated with these genes were analysed. A total of 18 555 913 and 20 847 000 effective reads were obtained from the test and control groups, respectively. In total, 373 known and 399 novel miRNAs were detected in the test group, and 358 known and 232 novel miRNAs were uncovered in the control group. A total of 35 differentially expressed miRNAs were identified in the test group compared to the control group, including 10 up-regulated miRNAs and 25 down-regulated miRNAs. Of these miRNAs, miR-223 exhibited the highest degree of up-regulation with an approximately 3-fold increase in expression, whereas miR-26a exhibited the most decreased expression level (more than 2-fold). The RNAhybrid software predicted 18 801 genes as potential targets of these 35 miRNAs. Furthermore, several immune response and signal transduction pathways, including the RIG-I-like receptor signalling pathway, cytosolic DNA sensing pathway and Notch signal pathway, were enriched in these predicted targets. In summary, this study provided experimental evidence for the mechanism underlying the regulation of bovine mastitis by miRNAs and showed that miRNAs might be involved in signal pathways during S. agalactiae-induced mastitis.

Laves phase NbCr2-based composites toughened with different volume fractions of Cr phase were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of these spark plasma sintered NbCr2/Cr composites were investigated. The mechanical properties evaluations indicate that the introducing of Cr phase consolidated by SPS has a beneficial effect on the mechanical properties of the NbCr2 Laves phase. When the content of Cr phase in the NbCr2 Laves phase increases to 30 wt%, the hardness measured by a Berkovich nanoindenter operated with the continuous stiffness measurements mode attains the maximum value of 13.44 GPa, which is increased by about 56% over the as-cast NbCr2 Laves phase. More importantly, the room-temperature fracture toughness of the NbCr2-30wt%Cr alloy is increased to 18.9 MPa·m1/2, which is 16 times higher than that of the as-cast NbCr2 Laves phase (1.2 MPa·m1/2). The microstructural analysis indicates that the residual of Cr phase and formation of Nb solid solution can provide remarkable toughening of the NbCr2 Laves phase by fine grain toughening, dual ductile phase toughening, and interface toughening mechanisms. A possible formation mechanism of Nb solid solution during SPS has been proposed by considering the composition distribution.

The three-dimensional, inviscid and viscous flow instability modes that appear on a solid-body rotation flow in a finite-length straight, circular pipe are analysed. This study is a direct extension of the Wang & Rusak (Phys. Fluids, vol. 8 (4), 1996a, pp. 1007–1016) analysis of axisymmetric instabilities on inviscid swirling flows in a pipe. The linear stability equations are the same as those derived by Kelvin (Phil. Mag., vol. 10, 1880, pp. 155–168). However, we study a general mode of perturbation that satisfies the inlet, outlet and wall conditions of a flow in a finite-length pipe with a fixed in time and in space vortex generator ahead of it. This mode is different from the classical normal mode of perturbations. The eigenvalue problem for the growth rate and the shape of the perturbations for any azimuthal wavenumber $m$ consists of a linear system of partial differential equations in terms of the axial and radial coordinates ($x,r$). The stability problem is solved numerically for all azimuthal wavenumbers $m$. The computed growth rates and the related shapes of the various perturbation modes that appear in sequence as a function of the base flow swirl ratio (${\it\omega}$) and pipe length ($L$) are presented. In the inviscid flow case, the $m=1$ modes are the first to become unstable as the swirl ratio is increased and dominate the perturbation’s growth in a certain range of swirl levels. The $m=1$ instability modes compete with the axisymmetric ($m=0$) instability modes as the swirl ratio is further increased. In the viscous flow case, the viscous damping effects reduce the modes’ growth rates. The neutral stability line is presented in a Reynolds number ($Re$) versus swirl ratio (${\it\omega}$) diagram and can be used to predict the first appearance of axisymmetric or spiral instabilities as a function of $Re$ and $L$. We use the Reynolds–Orr equation to analyse the various production terms of the perturbation’s kinetic energy and establish the elimination of the flow axial homogeneity at high swirl levels as the underlying physical mechanism that leads to flow exchange of stability and to the appearance of both spiral and axisymmetric instabilities. The viscous effects in the bulk have only a passive influence on the modes’ shapes and growth rates. These effects decrease with the increase of $Re$. We show that the inviscid flow stability results are the inviscid-limit stability results of high-$Re$ rotating flows.

Serum vitamin D (25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD)) may influence serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels and bone mineral density (BMD). In the present study, we assessed serum 25OHD concentration and its association with PTH and BMD in urban males from Guiyang (N26.57°), the capital city of Guizhou province, Southwest China. We recruited 634 males aged >20 years from the Guiyang Health Measures Survey, and stratified them into three groups according to age: young (20–39 years), middle aged (40–59 years) and older (60–79 years). We measured serum concentrations of 25OHD, PTH levels and BMD of the lumbar spine (L1–L4), femoral neck and total hip. In addition, we also explored the relationship between 25OHD and lifestyle, socio-economic characteristics and medical history by applying covariance analysis and locally weighted regression plots. The results showed that serum 25OHD was <50 nmol/l in 59·3 % of the subjects and >75 nmol/l in 12·6 % of the subjects. Higher level of serum PTH was detected in relation to lower concentrations of serum 25OHD up to 50 nmol/l. A negative correlation between serum 25OHD and PTH concentrations was observed (r −0·207, P=0·003). Mean concentration of serum PTH increased gradually and plateaued while concentrations of serum 25OHD decreased to 50 nmol/l. Gradual increase in serum PTH was observed as 25OHD concentration was <25 nmol/l (P=0·004). BMD values at all sites were greater in the higher serum 25OHD concentration group. This study shows that low concentrations of serum 25OHD were common in males, and bone health was likely to be improved when serum 25OHD values were between 30 and 50 nmol/l.

As Si-transistor technology advances beyond the 10 nm node, the device research community is increasingly looking into the possibility of replacing Si with novel, high mobility materials as the transistor channel. Among several possible candidate materials, germanium and germanium-tin alloys (GeSn) have emerged as strong contenders for the next generation of complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) transistors. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in Ge and GeSn transistor research. We address several key material challenges involved in fabricating high-performance Ge/GeSn-based CMOS transistors, such as gate stack formation and achieving low-resistance contacts to transistor source/drain regions. Using Ge/GeSn as channel materials, we present a FinFET-based, Si-compatible CMOS solution for device dimensions expected in the 7 nm technology node, discuss the practical challenges involved in realizing this design, and highlight directions for future research.

The Antarctic oscillation (AAO) has been characterized by a persistently positive trend in summer (December–January–February, DJF) during the last 50 years. Thus, the question has arisen of whether the trend is unusual. By investigating five reconstructed historical AAO time series for the past 500 years, recurrences of similar and even stronger trends have been found, indicating that the recent DJF AAO trend is not unprecedented in a historical perspective. To estimate the possible roles played by greenhouse gases or/and ozone, an analysis for DJF AAO trends during the 1969–98 period was conducted using three multiple model ensembles derived from the projects of ‘The twentieth-century climate in coupled models’ (20C3M) and ‘Pre-industrial control experiment models’ (PICTL) of the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC AR4). The results show that the ozone depletion over Antarctica and global warming may play significant roles in the strengthening trend. Combining the simulations and reconstructions we emphasize that the AAO trend related to global warming may get much stronger when enhanced by low-frequency natural variability.

The physical properties of a recently proposed feedback-stabilization method of a vortex flow in a finite-length straight pipe are studied for the case of a solid-body rotation flow. In the natural case, when the swirl ratio is beyond a certain critical level, linearly unstable modes appear in sequence as the swirl level is increased. Based on an asymptotic long-wave (long-pipe) approach, the global feedback control method is shown to enforce the decay in time of the perturbation’s kinetic energy and thereby quench all of the instability modes for a swirl range above the critical swirl level. The effectiveness of an extended version of this feedback flow control approach is further analysed through a detailed mode analysis of the full linear control problem for a solid-body rotation flow in a finite-length pipe that is not necessarily long. We first rigourously prove the asymptotic decay in time of all modes with real growth rates. We then compute the growth rate and shape of all modes according to the full linearized control problem for swirl levels up to 50 % above the critical level. We demonstrate that the flow is stabilized in the whole swirl range and can be even further stabilized for higher swirl levels. However, the control effectiveness is sensitive to the choice of the feedback control gain. A potentially best range of the gain is identified. An inadequate level of gain, either insufficient or excessive, could lead to a marginal control or failure of the control method at high swirl levels. The robustness of the proposed control law to stabilize both initial waves and continuous inlet flow perturbations and the elimination of the vortex breakdown process are demonstrated through numerical computations.

We develop Si-based nano-photonic devices for the control of light at the nano-scales. We design high quality (Q) factor photonic crystal nanobeam cavities for a variety of Si compatible materials with low index, such as silicon rich oxide and silicon nitride, all with Q > 9,000 and small mode volumes. We apply these cavity designs to active materials such as Sinanocrystal doped silicon oxide and Er doped silicon nitride. By placing emitters in these cavities, we demonstrate that the cavity enhances emission processes. We show that the free carrier absorption process is greatly enhanced in the nanobeam cavities at both room and cryogenic temperatures. In addition, we demonstrate that nanobeam cavities made of Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride have enhanced absorption and gain characteristics compared to earlier designs that included silicon in the cavity. Because of the reduced losses, we observe linewidth narrowing and material transparency at both room temperature and cryogenic temperatures.

In this paper, fired and non-fired direct PECVD deposited Si-SiNx interface properties with and without NH3 pretreatment on both n- and p-type mono-crystalline silicon samples were investigated with deep-level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements. A and B defect states are identified at the Si-SiNx interface. Energy-dependent electron and hole capture cross sections were measured by small-pulse DLTS. Fired samples with NH3 pretreatment show the lowest DLTS signals, which suggests the lowest overall Dit. The combination of NH3 pretreatment and firing is also suggested for application in the solar cell fabrication.

The effects of different concentrations of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) on rat adipocyte apoptosis were detected by optical microscopy, agarose gel electrophoresis and flow cytometry methods. The morphological changes of rat adipocyte apoptosis induced by TNF-α correlated linearly with the concentration of TNF-α, ranging from 5 to 20 ng/ml. High concentrations of TNF-α induced more obvious apoptosis. Significant morphological changes of rat adipocytes treated with 5 ng/ml TNF-α were noticed, but DNA ladders did not appear in the DNA electrophoresis analysis, i.e. morphological changes occurred earlier than the biochemical changes. TNF-α induced apoptosis in the rat adipocyte in a dose-dependent manner. The induced apoptotic effect of 5, 10, 15 and 20 ng/ml TNF-α was significantly different (P0.01), but the effect among 10, 15 and 20 ng/ml TNF-α treatments was not significantly different (P0.05). Thus the optimum concentration of TNF-α for inducing apoptosis was 10 ng/ml.
