To present our data evaluating the feasibility of simultaneous cochlear implantation with resection of acoustic neuroma.
This paper describes a case series of eight adult patients with a radiologically suspected acoustic neuroma, treated at a tertiary referral centre in Newcastle, Australia, between 2012 and 2015. Patients underwent cochlear implantation concurrently with removal of an acoustic neuroma. The approach was translabyrinthine, with facial nerve monitoring and electrically evoked auditory brainstem response testing. Standard post-implant rehabilitation was employed, with three and six months’ follow-up data collected. The main outcome measures were: hearing, subjective benefit of implant, operative complications and tumour recurrence.
Eight patients underwent simultaneous cochlear implantation with resection of acoustic neuroma over a 3-year period, and had 25–63 months’ follow up. There were no major complications. All patients except one gained usable hearing and were daily implant users.
Simultaneous cochlear implantation with resection of acoustic neuroma has been shown to be a safe treatment option, which will be applicable in a wide range of clinical scenarios as the indications for cochlear implantation continue to expand.
Many writings on the changing nature of work portray the employee–organization relationship as a casualty of the modern workplace. This chapter reviews social exchange models of the employee–organization relationship as captured in organizational support and psychological contract theories. We explore the evidence of the extent to which the employee–organization relationship has changed as a result of changes in employment practices over the past several decades. Our analysis considers both overall trends in the employee–organization relationship as well as specific issues tied to temporary and part-time work, independent contractors, tripartite employment relationships, job insecurity, job hopping, and income inequality. The evidence suggests that while certain employment practices threaten the quality of the employee–organization relationship, social exchange models provide useful and relevant frameworks through which to understand the nature of these changes and employees’ reactions to them.
We are building a biosensor based on ion channels inserted into lipid bilayers that are suspended across an aperture in silicon. The process flow only involves conventional optical lithography and deep Si reactive ion etching to create micromachined apertures in a silicon wafer. In order to provide surface properties for lipid bilayer attachment that are similar to those of the fluorocarbon films that are currently used, we coated the silicon surface with a fluoropolymer using plasma-assisted chemical vapor deposition. When compared with the surface treatment methods using self-assembled monolayers of fluorocarbon chemicals, this novel approach towards modifying the wettability of a silicon dioxide surface provides an easy and fast method for subsequent lipid bilayer formation. Current-Voltage measurements on OmpF ion channels incorporated into these membranes show the voltage dependent gating action expected from a working porin ion channel.
The emphasis on innate talent as the basis for outstanding
achievement underestimates the importance of hard work. Learned
industriousness helps supply the sustained effort required for
superior achievement. The goal of having a productive, well-educated
citizenry can be furthered by rewarding students for high effort and
attending carefully to their individual educational needs.
Rachlin's hyperbolic-discounting model captures basic features of the subtlety of human impulsiveness and self-control and has received convincing experimental support. His distinction between self-control patterns and impulsive acts expands his earlier work to a greater range of self-control behaviors. Possible mechanisms that may weaken or strengthen patterns of self-control are considered.
