We exploit the deep Hα IFU kinematic data from the KMOS3D and SINS/zC-SINF surveys to explore the so far unconstrained outer rotation curves of star-forming disk galaxies at high redshift. Through stacking the signal of ~ 100 massive disks at 0.7 < z < 2.6, we construct a representative rotation curve reaching out to several effective radii. Our stacked rotation curve exhibits a turnover with a steep falloff in the outer regions, significantly strengthening the tantalizing evidence previously hinted at in a handful only of individual disks among the sample with the deepest data.

This finding confirms the high baryon fractions found by comparing the stellar, gas and dynamical masses of high redshift galaxies independently of assumptions on the light-to-mass conversion and Initial stellar Mass Function (IMF). The rapid falloff of the stacked rotation curve is most naturally explained by the effects of pressure gradients, which are significant in the gas-rich, turbulent high-z disks and which would imply a possible pressure-driven truncation of the outer disk.

Observed massive galaxies in the distant Universe form stars at much higher rates than today. High levels of star formation are sustained by a continuous supply of fresh gas and high molecular gas fractions. But after a peak around redshift z=2-3, the star formation rate decreases by an order of magnitude. Is this evolution mostly driven by the available cold gas reservoir, or are the star formation processes qualitatively different near the star formation peak? The Kennicutt-Schmidt relation enables to characterize the star formation efficiency at low and high redshift, but resolved measurements at the scale of the star-forming regions themselves are still challenging at high redshift. Molecular gas observations carried out at the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer within the PHIBSS program (Tacconi, Combes et al.) permit us to study the star formation efficiency at sub-galactic scales around z=1.2 and 1.5 for a limited sample of galaxies, and thus help characterize the star formation processes at this epoch. Our results lay in the continuation of the resolved low-redshift measurements, but further studies would be necessary to complement our sample and validate our conclusions.

The center of our Galaxy is home to a massive black hole, Sgr A*, and a nuclear star cluster containing stellar populations of various ages. While the late type stars may be too old to have retained memory of their initial orbital configuration, and hence formation mechanism, the kinematics of the early type stars should reflect their original distribution. In this contribution we present a new statistic which uses directly-observable kinematic stellar data to infer orbital parameters for stellar populations, and is capable of distinguishing between different origin scenarios. We use it on a population of B-stars in the Galactic center that extends out to large radii (∼0.5 pc) from the massive black hole. We find that the high K-magnitude population (≲15 M⊙) form an eccentric distribution, suggestive of a Hills binary-disruption origin.

One of the Milky Way's fundamental parameters is the distance of the Sun from the Galactic Center, R0. This article reviews the various ways of estimating R0, placing special emphasis on methods that have become possible recently. In particular, we focus on the geometric distance estimate made possible thanks to observations of individual stellar orbits around the massive black hole at the center of the Galaxy. The specific issues of concern there are the degeneracies with other parameters, most importantly the mass of the black hole and the definition of the reference frame. The current uncertainty is nevertheless only a few percent, with error bars shrinking every year.

The Commission was created in 2006, in response to an initiative by members of the international interferometry community, and as a natural expansion of the work of the earlier Working Group on Optical/Infrared Interferometry. At that time, optical interferometry had been in regular use in modern astronomy for approximately 20 years, primarily with first and second generation prototype and experimental facilities. Also at this time, the first observatory-scale user facilities were coming into operation at ESO, Keck, and CHARA.

Commission 54 held its business meeting on 11 August 2009 at “Botequim” at Rua Visconde de Caravelas 184/186, Humaitá, Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro. Individual members in attendance reported on activities of relevance to C54.

I report on two major programs to study the kinematic properties of galaxies at z ~ 1.5 − 3 with spatially resolved spectroscopy for the first time. Using the adaptive optics assisted, integral field spectrometer SINFONI on the ESO VLT, we have observed more than 70 galaxies and find compelling evidence for large, geometrically thick (turbulent), rotating disk galaxies in a majority of the objects that we can spatially resolve. It appears that these star forming disks are driven by continuous, rapid accretion of gas from their dark matter halos, and that their evolution is strongly influenced by internal, secular evolution. In contrast to the 20 submillimeter galaxies that we have investigated with the IRAM Plateau de Bure millimetre interferometer we find strong evidence for compact, major mergers. I discuss the impact of these new observations on our understanding of galaxy evolution in the early Universe.

For the SINS survey we have carried out Hα integral field spectroscopy of well-resolved, UV/optically selected star-forming galaxies at z ~ 2 with SINFONI on the ESO VLT. The SINS sample is representative of the majority of massive (M* > a few 1010M⊙) star-forming galaxies at that redshift. Our data obtained with laser guide star assisted adaptive optics in good seeing show the presence of turbulent, rotating star-forming rings/disks in at least a third of the sample, plus central bulge/inner disk components in some of the best cases, whose mass fractions relative to total dynamical mass appears to scale with [NII]/Hα flux ratio and ‘star formation’ age. Another third of the SINS galaxies show clear signs of kinematic perturbations by a merger, while the last third appear to be compact, ‘dispersion’ limited systems.

Our interpretation of these data is that the buildup of the central disks and bulges of massive galaxies at z ~ 2 can be driven by the early secular evolution of gas-rich ‘proto’-disks. High-redshift disks exhibit large random motions. This turbulence may in part be stirred up by the release of gravitational energy in the rapid ‘cold’ accretion flows along the filaments of the cosmic web. As a result, dynamical friction and viscous processes proceed on a time scale of < 1 Gyr, at least an order of magnitude faster than in disk galaxies at z ~ 0. Early secular evolution thus drives gas and stars into the central regions and can build up exponential disks and massive bulges, even without major mergers. Secular evolution along with increased efficiency of star formation at high surface densities may also help to account for the short time scales of the stellar buildup observed in massive galaxies at z ~ 2.

In the past decade high resolution measurements in the infrared employing adaptive optics imaging on 10m telescopes have allowed determining the three dimensional orbits stars within ten light hours of the compact radio source at the center of the Milky Way. These observations show the presence of a three million solar mass black hole in Sagittarius A* beyond any reasonable doubt. The Galactic Center thus constitutes the best astrophysical evidence for the existence of black holes which have long been postulated, and is also an ideal ‘lab’ for studying the physics in the vicinity of such an object. Remarkably, young massive stars are present there and probably have formed in the innermost stellar cusp. Variable infrared and X-ray emission from Sagittarius A* are a new probe of the physical processes and space-time curvature just outside the event horizon.

The stellar and wind properties of the new population of massive stars in the central parsec of the Galaxy are derived through quantitative analysis with atmosphere models.

It is becoming ever easier to obtain first class astronomical data by working solely from one's computer terminal, the modern equivalent of the armchair. This wonderful development may tempt us to forget that astronomical discoveries and findings are first and foremost driven by hard-won progress in observational and experimental capabilities. The present article is meant to demonstrate this assertion by reviewing recent developments and future possibilities in studying the Center of the Milky Way, our best case for the existence of a (massive) black hole and a superb laboratory for studying the physical processes in the immediate vicinity of such an enigmatic object.

We present evolutionary synthesis modeling of the nuclear regions of the starburst galaxy M 82, based on near-infrared integral field spectroscopy and mid-infrared ISO spectroscopy. Our data indicate the occurrence of two distinct starburst episodes in the central 500 pc about 8 – 15 Myr and 5 Myr ago, each lasting a few million years only. The first burst was most intense within 50 pc of the nucleus while the second burst took place in a circumnuclear ring of radius ~ 85 pc and along the stellar bar at larger radii. These recent episodes succeeded earlier starburst activity ~ 1 kpc away from the nucleus and peaking 650 Myr ago, as traced by the luminous star clusters studied by de Grijs et al. (2001). The combined results of both studies reveal complex evolution of starburst activity in M 82 which is consistent with a tidally-induced bar-driven scenario.

Over the past decade, it has become clear that interaction induced formation of compact young star clusters is a ubiquitous pheonomenon, and the understanding of this process is thought to also shed light on galaxy evolution in general, because these young clusters are widely believed to be the progenitors of a part of the globular cluster systems seen in local elliptical galaxies. We have observed the prototypical merger NGC 4038/4039 using near-infrared broad- and narrow band imaging, integral field spectroscopy and medium and high resolution spectroscopy. We find that all of the bright star clusters are young (<20 Myrs), but the “overlap region” hosts the youngest clusters (∼5 Myrs), while the nuclear starbursts started ∼100 Myrs ago. Photometric and dynamical masses range from 105 to a few x106M⊙. However, mass-to-light ratios vary from cluster to cluster and suggest differences in the contribution of low-mass stars. While clusters with a deficiency in low-mass stars are likely to evaporate before they are a Hubble time old, those with a high mass-to-light-ratio could represent young globulars.

We present results from sub-arcsecond near infrared integral field spectroscopy and millimeter IRAM-interferometry of the interacting galaxy NGC 6240. Using stellar absorption features in the NIR we determined the stellar velocity field and dispersion in NGC 6240. The two NIR emission peaks show rapid rotation and indicate a prograde encounter of the two progenitor galaxies. From the velocity dispersion an excess mass between the two nuclei is detected. This mass can be attributed to a massive rotating disk of cold CO gas located between the nuclei.

We performed near infrared integral field spectroscopy of several star clusters and the nuclei of the prototypical merger NGC 4038/39 (“The Antennae”). Near infrared (NIR) images covered both galaxies. The collision of the two gas-rich spiral galaxies has triggered a starburst obvious from a large number of young star clusters. ISO data suggest that the most active star formation occurs in the region where the two galaxy disks overlap. A significant fraction of the total bolometric luminosity of the system is produced there. Since this region is heavily extincted in the optical, the investigation was made in the NIR. Using Brγ emission and CO absorption features as age indicators, we derive the ages and mass estimates of the star clusters from a comparison with stellar synthesis models. Extinction is calculated from the Brγ/Hα ratio. The young, bright star clusters have ages ranging from 4-12 Myrs, while the nuclear starbursts are much older (50-80 Myrs). The overlap region hosts most of the youngest star clusters below ∼8 Myrs, while the northwestern region is dominated by star clusters in the age range between 8 and 12 Myrs. Several regions, including the northern nucleus, show evidence for sequential star formation on small spatial scales (< 100pc).

We present spectroscopic mid-IR observations of prominent starburst galaxies obtained with the Short Wavelength Spectrometer onboard the Infrared Space Observatory. The wavelength range accessible by ISO-SWS (2.5–45 μm) contains a large number of emission lines of atomic and molecular hydrogen and several other atomic species. In this paper we discuss the interpretation of the [Ne III] 15.5 μm/[Ne II] 12.8 μm line-ratio, the faint [OIV]25.9 μm line and the pure rotational lines of molecular hydrogen observed in our target galaxies.

The central parsec of our Galaxy is powered by a cluster of young massive hot stars which formed a few million years ago. Within that cluster the seven most luminous (L >105.75 L⊙) and moderately hot (T < 104.5 K) blue supergiants contribute half of the ionizing luminosity of that region. These stars probably formed when a dense cloud fell into the center < 107 years ago, was highly compressed there, and became gravitationally unstable. Over six years of high spatial resolution, near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy have made it possible to carry out a detailed investigation of the stars in the central cluster and its enclosed mass. As one result of a detailed variability study of the central cluster stars we found that the bright He I star IRS 16SW is a short-period variable with a period of ∼9.72 days. It is most likely an eclipsing binary with a lower mass limit of 100 solar masses. Line of sight velocities and proper motions have been measured for these hot stars (as well as ∼200 other stars) down to separations of less than five light days from the compact radio source Sgr A* at the dynamic center of the Milky Way. These confirmed measurements imply the presence of a central dark mass of 2.6 × 106 solar masses. The dark mass at the center of the Milky Way is currently the most compelling case for a massive black hole. Simple physical considerations show that this dark mass cannot consist of a stable cluster of stars, stellar remnants, substellar condensations or a degenerate gas of elementary particles but that at least 103 to 105 solar masses must be in the form of a massive black hole associated with Sgr A* itself.

We argue that the wind from IRS 16 and He I stars in the central 1 pc of the Galaxy is responsible for the peculiar features of accretion onto a putative black hole at the Galactic center. What makes Sgr A∗ unique is not that it is just underfed but, in addition, it has a much lower efficiency of accretion and possibly a lower mass, compared to the AGN case.

Knowledge of the distribution and excitation of gas close to the nuclei of starburst galaxies is an essential element in the construction of models dealing with intense, but short-lived, star forming events. Building a comprehensive picture of the concentrations of various gaseous components in such regions calls for a multi-wavelength approach: the principal cooling lines of cold (T≤200K) molecular gas fall in the millimetre waveband, those of hot (T~1−3×103K) excited molecular material in the near-IR, and those pinpointing starburst activity in the optical. In many cases the extents of the emitting regions are on the order of only a few arcseconds.

As part of such a study into the relationship between various near- and circum- nuclear gaseous components in starburst galaxies, we have obtained data on NGC 6764, a barred spiral classified as a LINER, at resolutions of 1″−4″ across the optical, near-infrared and millimetre wavelength regimes. In a previous paper (Eckart et al. 1991) we discussed extensive single dish millimetre and JHK near-IR measurements of the nucleus and disk of NGC 6764. Here we present new near-IR observations obtained with the MPE FAST instrument (Rotaciuc et al. 1991) at the William Herschel Telescope, along with 2″ resolution 12CO J=1-0 (115 GHz) interferometry measured with the Nobeyama millimeter array and 1″ optical spectroscopy from the 3.5m Calar Alto telescope.

Recent observations of sub-mm and far-IR atomic fine structure and molecular rotational lines give evidence that due to the clumpiness of the molecular cloud cores the UV radiation from newly formed stars affects a very large fraction of the cloud material. Direct observations of the clumpy structure in M17 SW allow to derive several parameters of the clump distribution, in particular the clump mass spectrum and the volume filling factor. Implications of these results in regard to star formation are shortly discussed.
