Many protected areas worldwide have been established to protect the last natural refuges of flagship animal species. However, long-established protected areas do not always match the current distributions of target species under changing environmental conditions. Here we present a case study of the Asian elephant Elephas maximus in Xishuangbanna, south-west China, to evaluate whether the established protected areas match the species’ current distribution and to identify key habitat patches for Asian elephant conservation. Our results show that currently only 24.5% of the predicted Asian elephant distribution in Xishuangbanna is located within Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve, which was established for elephant conservation. Based on the predicted Asian elephant distribution, we identified the most important habitat patches for elephant conservation in Xishuangbanna. The three most important patches were outside Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve and together they contained 43.3% of the estimated food resources for Asian elephants in all patches in Xishuangbanna. Thus, we identified a spatial mismatch between immobile protected areas and mobile animals. We recommend the inclusion of the three identified key habitat patches in a new national park currently being planned by the Chinese authorities for the conservation of the Asian elephant.

Nicotine 3,5-dihydroxybenzoate dihydrate is a nicotine salt and can be used as compositions in tobacco products. X-ray powder diffraction data, unit-cell parameters, and space group for nicotine 3,5-dihydroxybenzoate, C10H15N2⋅C7H5O4⋅2H2O, are reported [a = 8.424(1) Å, b = 13.179(8) Å, c = 8.591(1) Å, α = 90°, β = 102.073(8)°, γ = 90°, unit-cell volume V = 932.765(3) Å3, Z = 2, ρcal = 1.256 g⋅cm−3, and space group P21] at room temperature. All measured lines were indexed and are consistent with the P21 space group.

Adolescence is a period of remarkable psychosocial and neural development. Many life-long health habits are established during adolescence, making it a window of opportunity for health promotion. One way to promote adolescent health is through mass and social media campaigns. Although some health media campaigns that target adolescents are effective in changing health-relevant cognitions and behaviors, there is considerable room for improving these outcomes. Recent advancements combining neuroimaging tools and health persuasion have suggested key neural mechanisms underlying behavior change and retransmission of health-relevant ideas and norms in adults. This line of work highlights the integral role of the brain's value system in health persuasion and its importance for improving campaign design and effectiveness. Less is known about how these insights could be leveraged to inform adolescent health persuasion. In this article, we review what is known and unknown about the development of the brain's value system and its connections with cognitive control and social cognition systems across adolescence. Combining these insights, we propose that neuroimaging tools offer unique possibilities that could improve adolescent media health campaigns and promote adolescent well-being.

We have demonstrated 4-μm InAs/InGaSb/AlSb interband cascade lasers with optical output power close to 0.5 W per facet with 1-μs pulses at 1 kHz repetition rate. At 10% duty cycle, an average output power ∼20 mW was realized. External and internal quantum efficiencies exceeding 200% have been achieved at 80 K.

Stimulated emission in InAs/InGaSb/InAs/AlSb type-II quantum-well (QW) lasers was observed up to room temperature at 4.5 μm, optically pumped by a pulsed 2-μm Tm:YAG laser. The absorbed threshold peak pump intensity was only 1.1 kW/cm2 at 300 K, with a characteristic temperature T0 of 61.6 K for temperatures up to 300 K. We will also study the effects of internal loss on the efficiency and output power for type-II QW lasers via optical pumping. Using a 0.98-μm InGaAs linear diode array, the devices exhibited an internal quantum efficiency of 67% at temperatures up to 190 K, and was capable of < 1. 1-W peak output power per facet in 6-μs pulses at 85 K. The internal loss of the devices exhibited an increase from 18 cm−1 near 70 K to ∼ 60–100 cm−1 near 180 K, which was possibly due to inter-valence band free carrier absorption.
