In vitro released products of adult Setaria cervi females, microfilariae and extracts showed considerable amounts of collagenase activity. On the basis of per mg protein released in vitro, the products of both microfilariae and adult females exhibited comparable activity but this was much higher than that of extract of microfilariae and adult females. Two collagenase enzymes with molecular masses of 50 kDa and 70 kDa were separated using DEAE-sepharose CL6B and Sephadex G-100 column chromatography. The 50 kDa and 70 kDa collagenase exhibited pH optima of 5.2 and 7.0, respectivly. Considering specific activity, the 50 kDa enzyme was found to contribute about ten times more collagenase activity as compared to the 70 kDa enzyme. An inhibition study revealed obvious differences between them. Thiol group inhibitors such as N-ethylmaleimide and leupeptin inhibited the 50 kDa enzyme but this was strongly activated by dithiothreitol, a thiol group stabilizer. Alternatively, the 70 kDa enzyme showed a sensitivity to a metal chelator and a serine group inhibitor indicating its metalloserine protease nature. The antifilarial drug diethylcarbamazine did not demonstrate any inhibition under in vitro conditions. Both enzymes were significantly inhibited by antibody IgG separated from Wuchereria bancrofti infected human sera, showing a possible immunoprotective role.

The first direct absolute dates for the exploitation of several summer crops by Indus populations are presented here. These include rice, millets and three tropical pulse species at two settlements in the hinterland of the urban site of Rakhigarhi. The dates confirm the role of native summer domesticates in the rise of Indus cities. They demonstrate that, from their earliest phases, a range of crops and variable strategies, including multi-cropping, were used to feed different urban centres. This has important implications for understanding the development of the earliest cities in South Asia, particularly the organisation of labour and provisioning throughout the year.

Chemical vapor deposition of diamond has opened up new applications in microelectronics, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and coating technologies. This paper compares and contrasts the high-temperature electrical behavior of microcrystalline versus nanocrystalline diamond films. Through-thickness current–voltage characteristics between room temperature and 823 K are presented for a series of films synthesized with different gas phase concentrations of nitrogen and argon. One set of samples was characterized by measurements between room temperature and 823 K and a second set by two-step thermal cycling from room temperature to 573 and 823 K. It was found that with increasing nitrogen concentration (up to 0.1% N2), the resistivity slightly increased followed by a decrease at higher concentrations. Activation energies and barrier heights were in general lower for the more defective films. These results in conjunction with material characterization indicated that more defective diamond films were synthesized at higher nitrogen concentrations in the gas phase.

The indigenous poultry germplasm of Andaman & Nicobar Islands includes Nicobari fowl, Barred desi, Naked neck and Frizzle fowl, of which Nicobari fowl is the only native fowl of these Islands. The study of immune status is indirectly correlated with the disease resistance characteristics of the bird’s. The present study was conducted to know the primary humoral antibody response to Sheep RBC (SRBC) and their persistence in the immune system. However, for complete immunocompetence status, beside humoral responses the CMI and phagocytic responses are also to be considered.

Garole, a highly prolific breed of sheep can be characterised as real microsheep of India. Literature available in respect of its genetic potentiality for fecundity and other economic parameters is very scanty. This has peculiar characteristics such as prolificacy, resistance to foot rot disease, grazing in knee-deep water, adaptability to hot humid conditions and high mothering instinct for their neonates. Some research and development programmes have recently been initiated by Central and State Governments to study this valuable germplasm in a systematic manner. Endeavours are required to evaluate this animal in its home tract and in-situ conservation involving local sheep farmers is necessary for posterity.

Munjal is a mutton-type sheep found in some districts of the Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan states. A sample survey was conducted in two districts of Rajasthan and one district of Punjab to record characteristics of Munjal sheep. Information was recorded on morphological characteristics, body measurements and body weight. Munjal sheep are quite big in size, tall, rectangular and massive with a dark brown face. Measurements were recorded of body length, height, heart girth, paunch girth, ear length and tail length. Adult body weights were also recorded. Wool samples were collected and analysed for their quality attributes. Wool from this breed is very coarse and hairy.
