The bipolar dimension of morningness–eveningness refers to the preferred times of day for achieving various activities (i.e. the phase of the circadian clock). It is validated from a biological point of view, associated with at least one gene and heritable through an epistatic mechanism. It has been used as a proxy to study the relationships between the circadian system, personality and psychopathology: there is a correlation between the evening orientation and depression, extraversion and, probably, impulsivity. Furthermore, there is a possible relationship with temperament in children as theorized by Thomas and Chess. In this paper, we expanded on the hypothesis that impulsive subjects are low in morningness by performing a factor analysis of the Composite Scale of Morningness, Cloninger’s temperament and character inventory, and Spielberger’s trait anxiety inventory in a sample of 129 males. The results can probably be extended to women. Morningness is negatively correlated with novelty seeking (which includes an impulsivity facet), positively correlated with persistence, and independent of character dimensions and trait anxiety. Future research may focus in the involvement of the circadian system in these personality dimensions and facets, and the benefits of adding chronotherapic manipulations in the treatment of the personality disorders.

Southern Iceland is one of the main outlets of the Icelandic ice sheet and is subject to seismicity of both tectonic and volcanic origins along the South Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ). A sedimentary complex spanning Marine Isotopic Stage 6 (MIS 6) to the present includes evidence of both activities. It includes a continuous sedimentary record since the Eemian interglacial period, controlled by a rapid deglaciation, followed by two marine glacioisostasy-forced transgressions, separated by a regression phase connected to an intra-MIS 5e glacial advance. This record has been constrained by tephrostratigraphy and dating. Analysis of this record has provided better insights into the interconnectedness of hydrology and volcanic and tectonic activity during deglaciations and glaciations. Low-intensity earthquakes recurrently affected the water-laid sedimentation during the early stages of unloading, accompanying rifting events, dyke injection, and fault reactivations. During full interglacial periods, earthquakes were significantly less frequent but of higher magnitude along the SISZ, due to stress accumulation, favored by low groundwater levels and more limited magma production. Occurrence of volcanism and seismicity in Iceland is commonly related to rifting events. Subglacial volcanic events seem moreover to have been related to stress unlocking related to limited or full unloading/deglaciation events. Major eruptions were mostly located at the melting margin of the ice sheet.

Ecosystem services related to biodiversity, including cultural services, are essential for agricultural production such as viticulture. In agricultural landscapes, pesticides and mechanization threaten biodiversity, lead to landscape simplification and may reduce ecosystem services. On the other hand, consumers are more and more aware of environmental issues in food production. We investigated if landscape complexity, including soil management practices, was (i) appreciated by visitors and (ii) presented by winegrowers and tourism professionals in the French vineyards with the designation of geographical origin (DGO) ‘Coteaux du Layon’. Our goal was to determine if landscape complexity provides cultural ecosystem services such as aesthetics beneficial for the wine trade and the DGO region's attractiveness. We analyzed the iconographic content and the composition of landscape photographs on 50 websites to investigate if local winegrowers and tourism professionals associate biodiversity in the landscape and soil management practices with wine promotion. A questionnaire was realized to study the perception of local landscapes by interviewing 192 visitors of the region. The benefits of landscape complexity and soil management practices favoring biodiversity in viticulture were known and appreciated by many visitors, even if photographs of wine and traditional practices appeared to encourage wine purchasing. Local winegrowers’ representation of the DGO region only partially served these preferences; instead they mainly presented the wine-growing region by photographs focusing on wine bottles and vineyards. Consumer's preferences showed that complex landscapes could provide cultural ecosystem services that winegrowers are still less aware of. Therefore, complexity-targeted landscape planning including vegetation cover in soil management should be included in policy recommendations as agroecological measures for sustainable DGO production.

Storage cabinets for heat-sensitive endoscopes (SCHEs) are designed to store gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopes in a clean, dry and well-ventilated cupboard to prevent microbiological proliferation. The use of SCHEs in a GI endoscopy unit has significally reduced the rate of contaminated endoscopes (13.0% vs 45.0%, P<.001).

In the framework of the study of long-term storage of the spent nuclear fuel, polycrystalline UO2 samples have been implanted with He ions. The thin implanted layer, close to the free surface is subjected to elastic stresses which are studied by x-ray diffraction (micro Laue diffraction) and a mechanical modeling. A simple expression of the displacement gradient tensor has been evidenced; it concerns only three terms (ε3, ε4 and ε5) which strongly evolve with considered grain orientations. Finally, we show that results obtained with micro diffraction are in very good agreement with conventional x-ray diffraction measurements done in laboratory at macro scale.

Increasing resistance to acute salmonellosis (defined as bacteraemia in animals showing symptoms) is not sufficient for food safety, because of the risk of carrier state (when animals excrete bacteria without showing any symptoms). Increased resistance to Salmonella carrier state is therefore needed. Two experiments of divergent selection on resistance at a younger and a later age lead to significant differences between lines and allowed estimating genetic parameters on 4262 animals. Heritability of resistance was estimated at 0·16 in chicks, while it varied from 0·14 to 0·23 with analysed organ in adult hens. Genetic correlations between contamination of the different organs ranged from 0·46 to 0·67, while correlations between resistance at both ages were estimated at −0·50, showing that increasing genetic resistance of hens will reduce resistance in chicks. Highest estimated absolute values of genetic correlations between resistance and production traits were, for chicken contamination level, with number of eggs laid between 41 and 60 (0·37) and, for adult contamination, with number of eggs laid between 18 and 24 (0·37) or 25 and 40 (−0·33) weeks of age.

Since the middle of the 90's, GaN epitaxy techniques have been developed, using either MOCVD or MBE growth methods. A low cost approach is presented aiming at satisfying thermal issues encountered on conventional substrates such as SiC, Sapphire and more recently Silicon. Domain of application are being covered with their associated challenges: RF and High Power applications. Stress engineering is one of the key parameters.

In addition to their use in cheese technology, dairy propionibacteria have been identified as potential probiotics. However, to have a probiotic effect, propionibacteria have to survive and to remain metabolically active in the digestive tract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the survival and metabolic activity of Propionibacterium freudenreichii within the gastrointestinal tract of human microbiota-associated rats, and its influence on intestinal microbiota composition and metabolism. Twenty-five dairy Propionibacterium strains were screened for their tolerance towards digestive stresses and their ability to produce propionate in a medium mimicking the content of the human colon. Three strains were selected and a daily dose of 2 × 1010 colony-forming units was fed to groups of human microbiota-associated rats for 20 d before microbiological, biochemical and molecular investigations being carried out. These strains all reached 8-log values per g faeces, showing their ability to survive in the gastrointestinal tract. Transcriptional activity within the intestine was demonstrated by the presence of P. freudenreichii-specific transcarboxylase mRNA. The probiotic efficacy of propionibacteria was yet species- and strain-dependent. Indeed, two of the strains, namely TL133 and TL1348, altered the faecal microbiota composition, TL133 also increasing the caecal concentration of acetate, propionate and butyrate, while the third strain, TL3, did not have similar effects. Such alterations may have an impact on gut health and will thus be taken into consideration for further in vivo investigations on probiotic potentialities of P. freudenreichii.

À cet effet, des moyens de mesure répondant aux spécificités, intrinsèques et d'utilisations, des matériaux thermo-dégradables ont été développés par l'onera.

A unified diffusion model is developed, valid for all usual substitutional atoms in SiGe and strained SiGeC layers, in accordance with all published experimental data and predicting the enhancement of Arsenic diffusion in SiGe and SiGeC strained layers. Using a new SIMS methodology, the study of As intrinsic diffusion in SiGe and SiGeC layers is performed, at low concentration and under equilibrium annealing conditions. Arsenic diffusivity in fully-strained SiGe and SiGeC layers on Si substrates was successfully compared to the unified diffusion model.

Transient redshifted events monitored in the spectrum of β Pictoris have been interpreted as resulting from the evaporation of numerous comet-like bodies in the vicinity of this star. The dynamical origin for this phenomenon is attributed to mean-motion resonances (4:1 and 3:1) with a Jovian-like planet. Numerical simulations of this phenomenon are able to correctly reproduce the dynamical characteristics of the star-grazers observed. The numerical study allows to estimate the density of the planetesimal disk from which the bodies are supposed to originate, i.e. ∼ a few 108 bodies per AU. A key issue with this model is the refilling of the resonances, as without refilling they should be cleared within a few 105 yr and the observed phenomenon should stop. Collisions among planetesimals are a plausible mechanism. Collisional simulations show that collisions are able to sustain the observed phenomenon over much more than 106 yr, provided the population of the disk is high enough. The mass density of this population is estimated to a few tens of Earth masses per AU, which is only marginally realistic. However, the mass estimate is very poorly constrained.
