We investigate droplet impact on a solid substrate in order to understand the influence of the gas in the splashing dynamics. We use numerical simulations where both the liquid and the gas phases are considered incompressible in order to focus on the gas inertial and viscous contributions. We first confirm that the dominant gas effect on the dynamics is due to its viscosity through the cushioning of the gas layer beneath the droplet. We then describe an additional inertial effect that is directly related to the gas density. The two different splashing mechanisms initially suggested theoretically are observed numerically, depending on whether a jet is created before or after the impacting droplet wets the substrate. Finally, we provide a phase diagram of the drop impact outputs as the gas viscosity and density vary, emphasizing the dominant effect of the gas viscosity with a small correction due to the gas density. Our results also suggest that gas inertia influences the splashing formation through a Kelvin–Helmholtz-like instability of the surface of the impacting droplet, in agreement with former theoretical works.

We investigate the dynamics of drop impact on a thin liquid film at short times in order to identify the mechanisms of splash formation. Using numerical simulations and scaling analysis, we show that it depends both on the inertial dynamics of the liquid and the cushioning of the gas. Two asymptotic regimes are identified, characterized by a new dimensionless number $J$: when the gas cushioning is weak, the jet is formed after a sequence of bubbles are entrapped and the jet speed is mostly selected by the Reynolds number of the impact. On the other hand, when the air cushioning is important, the lubrication of the gas beneath the drop and the liquid film controls the dynamics, leading to a single bubble entrapment and a weaker jet velocity.

The International Astronomical Union's Commission 51 was established in 1982 as\break “Bioastronomy: Search for Extraterrestrial Life”. As the interests of Commission members expanded to include all aspects of the study of the origin, evolution, and distribution of life in the universe, C51 was renamed simply “Bioastronomy” in 2006. Thus, the term “bioastronomy” became for the Commission essentially synonymous with the NASA-coined term “astrobiology“. Since the latter term has been adopted by many scientific societies around the world with similar interests, under the new Division and Commission structure of the IAU the Commission has been again renamed and is now Commission F-3 “Astrobiology”.

Hybrid robots, composed of a parallel platform and serial wrist, achieve a compromise of stiffness and dexterity. Thus, they are well suited for applications such as aircraft component machining and automotive assembly, where high accuracy and large workspace movements are required. However, their forward kinematics can be highly coupled and be nonlinear. To reduce the time required to define the forward kinematics of a robot with parallel–serial structure, this paper introduces the use of neural networks. Two radial basis function networks are trained to learn the parallel and serial kinematics separately, and then integrated into a complete model. The error of this network model is analyzed and identified by a particle swarm optimization algorithm. Simulation and experiment results are obtained from the hybrid robot, Exechon, which shows that the developed kinematic model is able to produce accurate position and orientation estimates of the end-effector. The computation time of the neural network model is greatly reduced when compared to the time achieved by the numerical model.

This study assessed the impact of adding community-directed treatment (ComDT) to the routine health facility (HF)-based treatment on prevalence and intensity of soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections among children aged 12 to 59 months. Repeated cross-sectional surveys were conducted among randomly selected children of this age group from the intervention area (HF+ComDT area) and the comparison area (HF area) at baseline (n=986), 12 months (n=796) and 18 months (n=788) follow-up. The prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides was significantly higher in the HF+ComDT as compared to the HF area at baseline (P=0·048), but not at 12 and 18 months follow-up. At baseline the HF+ComDT area had significantly higher intensities of A. lumbricoides compared to the HF area (P<0·001), but not at 12 and 18 months follow-ups. Prevalence and intensity of hookworm did not differ significantly between treatment arms at any time. Analysis of trends showed a significant decrease in prevalence of A. lumbricoides and hookworm in the HF+ComDT area (P<0·001), of hookworm in the HF area (P<0·05), but not of A. lumbricoides in the HF area. It is concluded that the ComDT approach generally enhanced the treatment effect among under-five year children and that this alternative approach may also have advantages in other geographical settings.

Le Forage Grande Vitesse Vibratoire (FGVV) est un nouveau procédé de perçage qui permet de tripler la productivité des perçages profonds en supprimant les cycles d’évacuation des copeaux ainsi que la lubrification. Pour cela un porte-outil spécifique aété développé, qui entre en vibrations axiales auto-entretenues lors de la coupe et permet le fractionnement du copeau, facilitant ainsi sonévacuation. Pour anticiper uneéventuelle diminution de la durée de vie des roulements à billes de l’électrobroche résultant de ces vibrations, un modèle global du comportement dynamique du système tête vibratoire-électrobroche est présenté. Ce modèle est basé sur la modélisation du comportement des entités structurales par deséléments-finis de type « poutre-rotor» prenant en compte les effets dynamiques associés aux hautes fréquences de rotations de l’électrobroche, couplé à des modèles d’interfaces identifiés par la méthode de couplage de réceptance. Le modèle est validé à l’aide d’expérimentations qui montrent une bonne correspondance entre les résultats expérimentaux et numériques. Le modèle est ensuite utilisé pour calculer la durée de vie des roulements à billes de l’électrobroche lors de différentes opérations de perçage. L’influence de la fréquence de rotation et de l’avance sur la durée de vie des roulements estétudiée, permettant ainsi de faire ressortir des plages de fonctionnement optimal.

La prédiction des conditions de stabilité en usinage est d'une grande importance pour les opérations de fraisage à grande vitesse. Dans cet article un modèle dynamique de broche UGV est élaboré sur la base de la théorie de la dynamique des rotors. Les analyses dynamiques du modèle montrent une dépendance forte du comportement dynamique de la broche par rapport à sa vitesse de rotation. Une prédiction précise des conditions de stabilité en usinage doit nécessairement prendre en compte ces propriétés du comportement. En introduisant la fonction de transfert en bout d'outil de la broche, obtenue par le modèle, dans l'approche analytique d'analyse de la stabilité de la coupe d'Altintas et Budak, un nouveau diagramme de lobes de stabilité est élaboré. Chaque point de ce diagramme de lobe de stabilité est calculé sur la base des propriétés effectives de la broche à la fréquence de rotation considérée. Les limites de stabilité prédites par notre approche indiquent des variations significatives de stabilité, et permettent une prédiction plus précise des conditions d'usinage sans broutement. Des essais de coupe sont réalisés et permettent de valider expérimentalement les résultats en terme de stabilité obtenus par le modèle.

Un handicap important pour l'utilisation des machines outils à structure parallèle pour des opérations d'Usinage à Grande Vitesse (UGV) se situe au niveau de la précision de pose de l'outil. Dans le cas des mécanismes à structure parallèle, ce défaut de pose est surtout dû aux erreurs liées à la transformation inverse de la commande. Ces erreurs peuvent être réduites à l'aide d'une identification des paramètres géométriques du modèle géométrique. Le but de cet article est de présenter différentes méthodes d'identification applicables aux machines outils à structure parallèle. Dans un premier temps, nous présentons les principes généraux de l'identification géométrique des machines outils à structure parallèle. Puis, nous décrivons une méthode statique issue de l'expérience acquise sur les machines outils sérielles utilisant un ball-bar 3D. Cette méthode est aujourd'hui appliquée sur la machine outil Verne qui se situe à l'IRCCyN (Nantes). Finalement, nous présentons une nouvelle méthode d'identification basée sur la mesure d'une pièce usinée. Cette méthode est réalisé en trois étapes : l'usinage d'une pièce dédiée, sa mesure sur une Machine à Mesurer Tridimensionnelle (MMT) et l'identification numérique des paramètres géométriques.
