The sugarcane giant borer, Telchin licus licus, is an insect pest that causes significant losses in sugarcane crops and in the sugar-alcohol sector. Chemical and manual control methods are not effective. As an alternative, in the current study, we have screened Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) Cry toxins with high toxicity against this insect. Bioassays were conducted to determine the activity of four Cry toxins (Cry1A (a, b, and c) and Cry2Aa) against neonate T. licus licus larvae. Notably, the Cry1A family toxins had the lowest LC50 values, in which Cry1Ac presented 2.1-fold higher activity than Cry1Aa, 1.7-fold larger than Cry1Ab, and 9.7-fold larger than Cry2Aa toxins. In silico analyses were performed as a perspective to understand putative interactions between T. licus licus receptors and Cry1A toxins. The molecular dynamics and docking analyses for three putative aminopeptidase N (APN) receptors (TlAPN1, TlAPN3, and TlAPN4) revealed evidence for the amino acids that may be involved in the toxin–receptor interactions. Notably, the properties of Cry1Ac point to an interaction site that increases the toxin's affinity for the receptor and likely potentiate toxicity. The interacting amino acid residues predicted for Cry1Ac in this work are probably those shared by the other Cry1A toxins for the same region of APNs. Thus, the presented data extend the existing knowledge of the effects of Cry toxins on T. licus licus and should be considered in further development of transgenic sugarcane plants resistant to this major occurring insect pest in sugarcane fields.

Knowledge of the precipitation contribution to the Antarctic surface mass balance is essential for defining the ice-sheet contribution to sea-level rise. Observations of precipitation are sparse over Antarctica, due to harsh environmental conditions. Precipitation during the summer months (November–December–January) on four expeditions, 2015–16, 2016–17, 2017–18 and 2018–19, in the Terra Nova Bay area, were monitored using a vertically pointing radar, disdrometer, snow gauge, radiosounding and an automatic weather station installed at the Italian Mario Zucchelli Station. The relationship between radar reflectivity and precipitation rate at the site can be estimated using these instruments jointly. The error in calculated precipitation is up to 40%, mostly dependent on reflectivity variability and disdrometer inability to define the real particle fall velocity. Mean derived summer precipitation is ~55 mm water equivalent but with a large variability. During collocated measurements in 2018–19, corrected snow gauge amounts agree with those derived from the relationship, within the estimated errors. European Centre for the Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and the Antarctic Mesoscale Prediction System (AMPS) analysis and operational outputs are able to forecast the precipitation timing but do not adequately reproduce quantities during the most intense events, with overestimation for ECMWF and underestimation for AMPS.

At INFN-LNS we have developed a new kind of gamma mini-sensor, which allowed to implement a prototype array of modular sensors for online monitoring of radioactive waste. The sensors are based on Silicon PhotoMultipliers and scintillating fibers sensitive to gamma radiation, that have to be placed in a repository in shape of a fine grid, around each single waste drum. We simulated the counting response of thin scintillating fibers and verified the results with measurements using radioactive sources. Front-end electronics and an FPGA-based counting system were developed to handle the field data, also implementing data transmission, a graphical user interface and a data storage system. Moreover a test of four sensors in a real radwaste storage site was performed with promising results.

Objective – Aim of the study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Drug Attitude Inventory (DAI) by exploring its construct validity. Setting – 90 voluntary admitted patients with DSM III-R Schizophrenic (n.72) and Schizoaffective (n.18) disorders, age range between 18 and 50 years, treated with typical antipsychotics, able to participate in the study, were selected. Design – Exploratory factor analyses with alpha factoring and maximum–likelihood methods with Varimax Rotation were used to analyse DAI scores. Results – Extraction methods found 7 factors which explained 62.5% of the total variance. The first 2 factors could be labelled as “subjective response to treatment” construct and factors 3 to 7 as “attitude to medication” contruct. Conclusion – Although preliminarily, the Italian version of the DAI seems to maintain the original psychometric properties and it can be used easily to get a valid measurement of the patients' attitude to neuroleptic medication.

Aims – To obtain a new, well-balanced mental health funding system, through the creation of i) a list of psychiatric interventions provided by Italian Community-based Psychiatric Services (CPS), and associated costs; ii) a new prospective funding system for patients with a high use of resources, based on packages of care. Methods – Five Italian Community-based Psychiatric Services collected data from 1250 patients during October 2002. Socio-demographical and clinical characteristics and GAF scores were collected at baseline. All psychiatric contacts during the following six months were registered and categorised into 24 service contact types. Using elasticity equation and contact characteristics, we estimate the costs of care. Cluster analysis techniques identified packages of care. Logistic regression defined predictive variables of high use patients. Multinomial Logistic Model assigned each patient to a package of care. Results – The sample's socio-demographic characteristics are similar, but variations exist between the different CPS. Patients were then divided into two groups, and the group with the highest use of resources was divided into three smaller groups, based on number and type of services provided. Conclusions – Our findings show how is possible to develop a cost predictive model to assign patients with a high use of resources to a group that can provide the right level of care. For these patients it might be possible to apply a prospective per-capita funding system based on packages of care.

A prospective surveillance study of legionnaires disease and an environmental survey of Legionella species were performed simultaneously in a general hospital. During a period of 3 years, 705 patients with pneumonia were screened with a Legionella urinary antigen test, and pneumonia was confirmed by culture and serological tests. Twelve cases of legionnaires disease were identified, none of which were hospital acquired, despite the fact that 60% of hospital water samples were contaminated with Legionella pneumophila at a concentration of more than 103 colony-forming units/L. The probable source of infection was identified for only 2 community-acquired cases. The results show that environmental contamination alone is not able to predict the risk of legionnaires disease. If no cases are present, monitoring of hospital water systems is of little significance; clinical surveillance is much more important.

We consider the task-oriented modeling of the differential kinematics of nonholonomic mobile manipulators (NMMs). A suitable NMM Jacobian is defined that relates the available input commands to the time derivative of the task variables, and can be used to formulate and solve kinematic control problems. When the NMM is redundant with respect to the given task, we provide an extension of two well-known redundancy resolution methods for fixed-base manipulators (Projected Gradient and Task Priority) and introduce a novel technique (Task Sequencing) aimed at improving performance, e.g., avoiding singularities. The proposed methods are applied then to the specific case of image-based visual servoing, where the NMM image Jacobian combines the interaction matrix and the kinematic model of the mobile manipulator. Comparative numerical results are presented for two case studies.
