Personal space is the area individuals maintain around themselves into which others cannot intrude without arousing discomfort. This concept is potentially relevant in clinical psychiatry, especially in the context of disorders associated with social anxiety or social cognition disorders. Consistent with this idea, some rare studies have shown that personal space managing and interpersonal distance setting is disturbed in schizophrenic and bipolar patients. However, surprisingly, there is no data on personal space in social phobia. In this study, we aimed to investigate the characteristics of personal space in patients with social phobia using immersive and interactive virtual environments. Overall, the more the level of anxiety the more subjects leave space between themselves and others. The detailed results are discussed in the frame of cognitive models of social anxiety.

We investigate the interstellar medium towards seven TeV gamma-ray sources thought to be pulsar wind nebulae using Mopra molecular line observations at 7 mm [CS(1–0), SiO(1–0, v = 0)], Nanten CO(1–0) data and the Southern Galactic Plane Survey/GASS Hi survey. We have discovered several dense molecular clouds co-located to these TeV gamma-ray sources, which allows us to search for cosmic rays coming from progenitor SNRs or, potentially, from pulsar wind nebulae. We notably found SiO(1–0, v = 0) emission towards HESS J1809–193, highlighting possible interaction between the adjacent supernova remnant SNR G011.0–0.0 and the molecular cloud at d ∼ 3.7 kpc. Using morphological features, and comparative studies of our column densities with those obtained from X-ray measurements, we claim a distance d ∼ 8.6 − 9.7kpc for SNR G292.2–00.5, d ∼ 3.5 − 5.6 kpc for PSR J1418–6058 and d ∼ 1.5 kpc for the new SNR candidate found towards HESS J1303–631. From our mass and density estimates of selected molecular clouds, we discuss signatures of hadronic/leptonic components from pulsar wind nebulae and their progenitor SNRs. Interestingly, the molecular gas, which overlaps HESS J1026–582 at d ∼ 5 kpc, may support a hadronic origin. We find however that this scenario requires an undetected cosmic-ray accelerator to be located at d < 10 pc from the molecular cloud. For HESS J1809–193, the cosmic rays which have escaped SNR G011.0–0.0 could contribute to the TeV gamma-ray emission. Finally, from the hypothesis that at most 20% the pulsar spin down power could be converted into CRs, we find that among the studied pulsar wind nebulae, only those from PSR J1809–1917 could potentially contribute to the TeV emission.

We present observations of 50 deg2 of the Mopra carbon monoxide (CO) survey of the Southern Galactic Plane, covering Galactic longitudes l = 300–350° and latitudes |b| ⩽ 0.5°. These data have been taken at 0.6 arcmin spatial resolution and 0.1 km s−1spectral resolution, providing an unprecedented view of the molecular clouds and gas of the Southern Galactic Plane in the 109–115 GHz J = 1–0 transitions of 12CO, 13CO, C18O, and C17O.

We present a series of velocity-integrated maps, spectra, and position-velocity plots that illustrate Galactic arm structures and trace masses on the order of ~106 M⊙ deg−2, and include a preliminary catalogue of C18O clumps located between l = 330–340°. Together with the information about the noise statistics of the survey, these data can be retrieved from the Mopra CO website and the PASA data store.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is the gold standard treatment for cervical spondylosis but there is a lack of consensus in the literature regarding which type of bone graft is superior: autograft or allograft. The purpose of this study is to evaluate fusion after ACDF using a stand-alone intervertebral cage packed with autologous cervical bone shavings acquired during the procedure. Twenty patients that underwent single-level ACDF from 2011 to 2014 using a stand-alone polyetheretherketone (PEEK) cage were recruited. Patients were evaluated for evidence of bone fusion by plain films and CT scan. Fusion was primarily assessed by grading the level of trabecular bridging bone across the bone-graft interface. Odom’s criteria were used to assess clinical outcome. All interbody disc spaces achieved successful fusion at follow-up. A total of 80% (16/20) of patients had radiographic evidence of trabecular bone present both within and around the cage. The other 20% exhibited bridging bone within the cage but had evidence of minor radiolucent gaps and lack of bridging bone completely surrounding the cage. Eighty percent of patients reported excellent/good clinical outcomes. ACDF using a PEEK stand-alone cage with autograft bone shavings has a high rate of fusion and avoids potential complications of classic autograft harvesting and decreased allograft fusion rates.

Dans la première partie de cette revue, nous avons examiné, au travers d’une étudebibliographique approfondie, l’influence de différents facteurs liés à l’individu (âge,sexe, consommation d’alcool ou de tabac) sur le taux de translocations. Dans cette secondepartie, notre revue de la littérature s’est attachée à l’étude de facteurs plus toxiquesliés à une exposition professionnelle. Tous les agents toxiques analysés induisent uneaugmentation du taux de translocations au sein des lymphocytes des personnes exposées.Cependant 2 agents (hydrocarbures aromatiques polycycliques –HAPs- et les métaux lourds)augmentent de manière significative le taux des translocations des personnes exposées. Cetype d’agents toxiques augmente le taux de translocations proportionnellement à la dose età la durée d’exposition. La sensibilité de la technique FISH a permis de mettre enévidence la nécessité et le bon fonctionnement des équipements de protection. Pour tousles facteurs toxiques liés à une exposition professionnelle, un équipement de protectionadapté et ergonomique ou bien la période d’exposition ont réduit significativement le tauxde translocations des individus exposés. Ainsi la technique FISH pourrait servird’indicateur d’exposition. En conclusion, afin d’évaluer rétrospectivement l’expositiond’un individu, il est important de connaitre le plus précisément possible son curriculumclastogène et son âge. Ainsi, un taux de translocations limite pourrait être établi enfonction de l’impact des expositions professionnelles et environnementales connuesaujourd’hui et de la connaissance du passé de l’individu.

En cas d’accident radiologique impactant un grand nombre d’individus, il est primordialde différencier rapidement les individus exposés des individus non exposés. Le laboratoirede dosimétrie biologique de l’IRSN développe des méthodes pour répondre à ce type desituation. La méthode de référence est basée sur une estimation rapide de la dose aprèscomptage des dicentriques et des anneaux dans 50 métaphases. À l’issue de cette étape detri de la population exposée, une estimation plus précise de la dose reçue peut êtrenécessaire. Cette étape est longue car elle nécessite l’observation des aberrationschromosomiques dans au moins 500 métaphases. Pour améliorer cette méthodologie en deuxétapes, nous avons étudié l’utilisation d’un logiciel de détection automatique desdicentriques dans un cas réel d’accident radiologique impliquant 63 victimes. Cetteméthode a été comparée aux méthodes manuelles de références. La comparaison des dosesobtenues montre que la méthode automatique peut remplacer les deux étapes du comptagemanuel (50 et 500 métaphases), car elle cumule les avantages de chacune d’elles : rapiditéet précision.

L’évaluation de l’exposition aux rayonnements ionisants, effectuée longtemps aprèsl’exposition, est actuellement réalisée en dénombrant les aberrations chromosomiques detype translocations. Le taux de ces translocations observées dans les lymphocytes despersonnes exposées est comparé au taux observé au sein d’une population contrôle.Toutefois, la spécificité des translocations vis-à-vis de l’irradiation n’est pasclairement identifiée. Afin d’éviter toute conclusion hâtive, il est nécessaired’identifier tous les facteurs susceptibles d’induire des translocations. À notreconnaissance, aucune synthèse sur l’effet de ces différents facteurs sur le taux detranslocations n’a été réalisée à ce jour. Cette recherche bibliographique a confirmél’impact de certains facteurs personnels sur l’augmentation des translocations. Cetteétude corrobore que l’âge s’avère être le facteur ayant le plus d’impact sur le taux detranslocations, notamment après 60 ans. À ce jour, le facteur « âge » est déjà considérédans l’estimation du taux de translocations après suspicion d’exposition aux rayonnementsionisants pour toutes les classes d’âge. L’étude montre également que ce taux variesignificativement lorsque le patient est exposé simultanément et de manière importante etchronique à une combinaison alcool et tabac. Ainsi, une courbe du taux de translocationsdevrait être établie en fonction de la consommation excessive de ce type d’agent pourchaque individu. Ainsi il serait alors possible de déterminer le taux de translocationsinduit uniquement par une exposition radiologique. Les effets des agents toxiques sur letaux de translocations après exposition professionnelle feront l’objet d’une deuxièmepartie.

This paper concentrates on a first demonstrator, a 23 NbSi superconducting thermometer array, developed in the DCMB collaboration. Firstly, the NbSi thin film alloy is described then the 23 TES array topology is presented. After that, DC and noise cryogenic measurement is reported. The cryogenic readout chain is also presented and finally, the multiplexing scheme developed for the readout of the 23 pixels array is described.

This paper presents an ultra low noise instrumentation based on cryogenic electronic integrated circuit. We have designed an ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) in standard BiCMOS SiGe 0.35 μm AMS technology. The main functions of this circuit, the readout and the control of a 24 to 1 SQUID multiplexer, is presented. We also report the cryogenic operation of each part of this ASIC.

Les cellules souches mésenchymateuses (CSM) sont présentes dans divers tissus de l’organisme adulte dont la moelle osseuse. In vitro, les CSM peuvent se différencier en de nombreux types cellulaires du mésoderme, de l’endoderme et de l’ectoderme ; in vivo, elles ont la capacité de migrer vers un organe lésé. Il existe cependant peu d’informations sur le devenir et le potentiel thérapeutique lors de l’injection de ces cellules souches dans un organisme ayant subit une irradiation accidentelle ou thérapeutique. Nos travaux ont permis de mettre en évidence la répartition spatiale et le taux de prise de greffe des CSM injectées par voie intraveineuse (IV) dans un organisme en fonction de la configuration pour une irradiation gamma. Les CSM ont été isolées à partir de moelle osseuse humaine (CSMh) et injectées à des souris immunodéficientes 24 heures après irradiation. Nous avons mis au point trois types de configurations, une configuration d’irradiation corps entier (ICE) à une dose sublétale de 3,5 Gy et deux configurations d’irradiations localisées, pour lesquelles les souris reçoivent une dose locale totale de 8 Gy au niveau de l’abdomen ou de 30 Gy au niveau de la patte droite postérieure. Le taux d’implantation des CSMh dans les différents organes de l’organisme 15 jours après irradiation a été quantifié par amplification du gène humain de la bêta-Globine par PCR. Puis leur localisation in situ a été mise en évidence par marquage immuno-histochimique de la bêta-2-microglobuline humaine sur des sections d’organes murins possédant de l’ADN humain. En absence d’irradiation, les CSMh ont été détectées en très faible quantité. En revanche, le taux de CSMh implantées est plus important au niveau des zones irradiées à forte dose, suggérant que la colonisation des CSMh dans les tissus après irradiation est dépendante de la configuration d’irradiation. L’implantation des CSMh dans les organes n’appartenant pas aux zones surexposées évoque un état inflammatoire généralisé radio-induit. Cette observation met en avant l’existence d’un effet à distance (abscopal) des atteintes tissulaires locales radio-induites. L’ensemble de nos résultats suggère que la thérapie cellulaire par les CSM pourrait être utilisée pour la régénération des tissus normaux lésés suite à une irradiation accidentelle ou chez les patients soumis à une radiothérapie.

De nombreuses études suggèrent que les cellules souches adultes et plus particulièrement les cellules souches Mésenchymateuses humaines (CSMh) pourraient être utilisées pour réparer de nombreux organes. Nous avons étudié la capacité des CSMh à réduire les lésions cutanées radio induite. Pour induire des lésions sévères de la peau, des souris NOD/SCID ont été irradiées au niveau de la patte droite postérieure (30 Gy, débit 2,7 Gy/mn) en utilisant une source gamma au 60Co. Les CSMh ont été injectées 24 heures après irradiation par voie intraveineuse. La présence de cellules humaines, la sévérité des lésions et les processus de cicatrisation ont été étudiés sur les échantillons de peau prélevés de 3 à 8 semaines après irradiation. Nous avons pu observer que chez les souris greffées avec des CSMh, le niveau d’atteinte cutanée radio induite est significativement plus faible. Les scores cliniques utilisés pour l’étude de l’évolution des lésions cutanées de la peau sont significativement améliorés et une cicatrisation plus rapide est observée en comparaison des souris non injectées. La présence de cellules humaines a pu être détectée par PCR quantitative dans les zones cutanées en cours de cicatrisation. Ces résultats suggèrent premièrement que les CSMh sont capables de coloniser la peau altérée par les rayonnements ionisants et deuxièmement qu’elles accélèrent le processus de réparation de ce tissu limitant ainsi les complications tissulaires radio induites. La greffe de CSMh pourrait être un traitement thérapeutique efficace des phases précoces du syndrome cutané radio induit.

Two methodologies are presented allowing to find the current density on a revolution surface to obtain a given 3D magnetic field distribution. The combination of the Biot-Savart law and the superposition theory is used to establish an algebraic relationship between the predefined magnetic field and the searched current density. Basically, two approaches are used: the continuous approach, in which the current density is modeled by an analytical function and the discrete method where the searched current density is given by a list of values that match a mesh of the magnet support. Furthermore, the use of the spherical harmonic development of the predefined magnetic field leads to a compact formulation of the inverse problem. The proposed matrix methodology has been developed for any magnet having a revolution axis (revolution magnets). A computer code which uses both approaches has been developed and gives good simulation results, which show an interesting prospects for new magnet design.

La technique de référence en dosimétrie biologique est basée sur le dénombrement des aberrations chromosomiques de type dicentrique induit par les rayonnements ionisants. Cet article présente divers systèmes d'analyse d'images utilisés en dosimétrie biologique pour aider la détection de ces aberrations. Les systèmes présentés sont le CYTOGEN de la société IMSTAR, le CYTOSCAN (APPLIED IMAGING) et le METAFER (METASYSTEM). Tous ne présentent pas les mêmes fonctionnalités et chacun peut être utilisé de façon plus ou moins automatique. Certaines fonctionnalités communes de ces systèmes sont comparées. L'aide apportée par les systèmes porte sur 3 points : (1) localisation automatique des métaphases sur les lames, dans ce cas on a un gain de temps d'un facteur 2 à 4 par rapport au comptage manuel ; (2) un outil d'aide au comptage qui apporte un confort de lecture et une meilleure fiabilité des résultats ; (3) la détection automatique des dicentriques est particulièrement utile en cas de tri de population. En effet, dans ce cas il faut estimer très rapidement la dose reçue par un nombre important de personnes. Par contre, l'estimation de dose n'a pas besoin d'être aussi précise que dans le cas de l'expertise individuelle. Des erreurs dans la détection des dicentriques est alors tolérée et une détection automatique des dicentriques est envisageable. Le gain de temps est très appréciable puisqu'il est possible de compter 300 cellules en une demie-heure (METAFER) contre 25 avec la seule aide du chercheur de métaphases. Cependant la qualité de la détection doit encore être améliorée puisque 50 % des dicentriques ne sont pas détectées. Le marquage des centromères par technique FISH devrait permettre d'améliorer la sensibilité de la technique. Les premiers résultats sont encourageant puisque 90 % des centromères sont correctements détectés mais d'autres expériences doivent être réalisées pour évaluer le gain de temps.

Lors d'une suspicion d'exposition accidentelle aux rayonnements ionisants, la détermination de la dose reçue au moyen de paramètres biologiques est une part importante de la stratégie thérapeutique, en complément des signes cliniques et de la dosimétrie physique. Le dénombrement des aberrations chromosomiques instables dans les lymphocytes du sang périphérique est aujourd'hui la méthode de référence. La préparation des échantillons biologiques dépend cependant du but à atteindre, de l'expertise précise de suspicions d'irradiations ou du tri rapide en cas d'accident de grande envergure. Une adaptation peut être nécessaire s'il s'agit d'irradiation hétérogène ou ancienne. Malgré cette robustesse et ces adaptations, la cytogénétique conventionnelle reste une technique lourde, longue, réservée à du personnel spécialisé. Le dénombrement des micronoyaux dans les lymphocytes binucléés peut constituer une alternative, apparemment plus facile et plus simple que le test des dicentriques. À partir de l'expérience acquise par l'IPSN ces dernières années sur l'expertise des suspicions d'irradiation, ce papier a pour but de dresser un bilan technique quoique succinct de ces différentes approches telles que nous les avons adaptées aux suspicions d'irradiation récente.

At the end of July 1998, three 137Cs sources (between 0.17 and 150 GBq) were found in the vicinity of the village of Matkhoji, located at 300 km to the west of Tbilissi. This site was a former Russian military base, abandoned since 1992 and used now as pasture and a playground for the children. The Georgian Environment Ministry requested assistance from IAEA which sent a mission to the site. This established that a predominantly chronic exposure of part of the population of the village has occurred. The IAEA requested technical assistance from IPSN. A mission, made up of 4 people from IPSN and a representative of the IAEA went to the site from 12 to 17 October 1998. This mission collected information on the circumstances of the exposure and selected a potentially explored cohort of 112 people, in three groups: children of more than five years and adults of less than 50 years attending the site and members of a family who had a source in their cattle shed. An analysis of hematologic parameters was performed on these people and 85 blood samples were taken for biological dosimetry. The hematologic analysis carried out on the spot did not show any particular anomaly. The biological dosimetry by scoring of unstable chromosome aberrations (dicentric, rings centric, fragments) in blood peripheral lymphocytes was performed on blood samples after air transportation to the specialised laboratory (LDBM) of the IPSN Two successive procedures were initiated. The first was a quick phase of triage not very precise but intended to check if some of these people presented obvious signs of irradiation. Only 50 cells per subject were scored. Seven days were needed to complete this phase. Dicentrics were found in three people only indicating a whole-body dose not exceeding 0.5 Gy on average. This triage was followed of a more complete but longer examination, where chromosome aberrations were scored in 250 cells. Six weeks were necessary to score 22 000 cells from the 85 people. In total, 30 dicentrics were scored among only 17 Georgian patients. The highest dose to the whole body estimated from a reference calibration curve was 0.3 Gy The majority of these dicentrics was found in the children having played on several occasions in the former military camp. Unfortunately, the information provided by the population was too fragmentary to permit an effective reconstruction of the individual doses.

This paper deals with the solution of linear inverse problems in magnetostatics. The case the authors have broached is finding the current density on the basis of magnetic field values. Solving this kind of equation is an ill-posed problem. Exact magnetic field values and measured values lead to different cases, each of which is presented. To solve them, the authors use the conjugate gradient method with iterative regularization. They present numerical results for the design of magnets, gradient and shim coils, and numerical results for the problem of recovering current density values from measured field values.

We have used photoluminescence excitation and photocurrent spectroscopy to investigate the electronic properties of InxGa1-xAs/GaAs strained layer quantum wells and superlattices. In quantum wells, sharp excitonic transitions between discrete energy levels are observed both in excitation and near flatband photocurrent spectra whereas superlattices show heavy-hole to conduction miniband transitions at the Brillouin mini-zone centre and edge, directly giving the electron miniband width. Applying a longitudinal electric field to the quantum wells produces a red shift of the excitons due to the quantum confined Stark effect, while in superlattices, photocurrent spectra at finite applied electric fields show for the first time in this system, the effects of Wannier-Stark quantization. The analysis of the spectra provides a precise determination of the band offset.
