Deveroite-(Ce), ideally Ce2(C2O4)3·10H2O, is a new mineral (IMA 2013-003) found in the alpine fissures of Mount Cervandone, overlooking the Devero Valley, Piedmont, Italy. It occurs as sprays of colourless elongated tabular, acicular prisms only on cervandonite-(Ce). It has a white streak, a vitreous lustre, is not fluorescent and has a hardness of 2–2.5 (Mohs' scale). The tenacity is brittle and the crystals have a perfect cleavage along {010}. The calculated density is 2.352 g/cm3. Deveroite-(Ce) is biaxial (–) with 2V of ∼77°, is not pleochroic and the extinction angle (β ∧ c) is ∼27°. No twinning was observed. Electron microprobe analyses gave the following chemical formula: (Ce1.01Nd0.33La0.32Pr0.11Y0.11Sm0.01Pb0.04U0.03Th0.01Ca0.04)2.01(C2O4)2.99·9.99H2O. Although synchrotron radiation was not used to solve the structure of deveroite-(Ce) the extremely small size of the sample (13 μm × 3 μm × 1 μm) did not allow us to obtain reliable structural data. However, it was possible to determine the space group (monoclinic, P21/c) and the unit-cell parameters, which are: a = 11.240(8) Å, b = 9.635(11) Å, c = 10.339(12) Å, β = 114.41(10)°, V = 1019.6 Å3. The strongest lines in the powder diffraction pattern [d in Å (I)(hkl)] are: 10.266(100)(100); 4.816(35.26)(21); 3.415(27.83)(300); 5.125(24.70)(200); and 4.988(22.98)(111). Deveroite-(Ce) is named in recognition of Devero valley and Devero Natural Park.

Canonite from Alfenza grows as crowded, radiating, acicular aggregates covering bismuthinite crystals. Individual crystals have a lozenge-shaped habit on {010}, the presumed cleavage plane of cannonite. Crystal structure refinements in the P21/c space group of two single crystals led to the following cell parameters: a = 7.7196(5) Å, b = 13.8856(9), c = 5.6980(4), b = 109.174(1)º (R1 = 0.0424); and a = 7.7100(8), b = 13.8717(14), c = 5.6939(6), b = 109.155(2)º (R1 = 0.0438). Hydrogen atoms were also localized in the density-difference Fourier map and refined with soft restraints on the bond distances. Raman and IR spectroscopy confirm the presence of OH groups and the absence of molecular water, and deliver OH···O geometry wholly comparable with the structure refinement. Electron microprobe analyses revealed no significant levels of elements other than those expected in the ideal formula except fluorine which was present up to 0.14 a.p.f.u. The crystal structure can be described in terms of anion-centred OBi4 edge-sharing tetrahedra forming chains running parallel to z and strongly cemented along x by isolated SO4 tetrahedra. Each OBi4 tetrahedron is further connected along y by OH groups, making walls of composition Bi4O2(SO4)2(OH)4 parallel to (010). These walls are tied to each other along y by fewer Bi–O–S bridges and weaker OH···O bonds.

Albertiniite, Fe2+(SO3)·3H2O, is a new Fe2+ sulfite trihydrate, related chemically to gravegliaite. It occurs at the Monte Falò Pb-Zn mine near Coiromonte, in the Armeno Municipality, Verbano–Cusio–Ossola Province, Italy. It is an intermediate product of oxidation between iron sulfides and sulfates, forming monoclinic, colourless to pale yellow, transparent crystals with a vitreous lustre. The mineral occurs associated with stolzite, pyromorphite, hinsdalite, plumbogummite, gibbsite, scheelite and jarosite on brittle fractures of quartz veins or chlorite-schist. Albertiniite is optically biaxial (+) with 2V(meas) ≈ 40° and 2V(calc) = 66°. The measured refractive indices, using sodium light (589 nm) are: α = 1.612(2)°, β = 1.618(2)° and γ = 1.632(2)°. The optical axis plane is parallel to the perfect {010} cleavage plane. It is non-fluorescent under shortwave (254 nm) or longwave (366 nm) ultraviolet light. The calculated density is 2.469 g cm–3 (from the crystal-structure refinement), or 2.458 g cm–3 (from the chemical analysis and the single-crystal unit-cell parameters). The empirical formula is (average of 16 spots and based on 3 anhydrous oxygen apfu) (Ca0.001Mg0.001Na0.003)∑1.061(S0.971O3)·2.84H2O, with the H2O content calculated by difference to 100 wt.%. Albertiniite is monoclinic, with space group P21/n. Its unit-cell parameters are: a = 6.633(1), b = 8.831(1), c = 8.773(1) Å, β = 96.106(8)° and V = 511.0(1) Å3, with Z = 4. The eight strongest measured lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d in Å, (I/I0), (hkl)]: 4.072 (100) (1̄11), 3.539 (93) (1̄12), 5.533 (27) (1̄01), 6.167 (14) (011), 2.830 (14) (211), 4.998 (14) (101), 4.353 (12) (111) and 3.897 (12) (012). The mineral, which has been approved by the CNMNC, number IMA2015-004, is named albertiniite in honour of Claudio Albertini, an Italian mineral collector and expert in the systematic mineralogy of the Alps and pegmatites.

Black widows and redbacks are binary systems consisting of a millisecond pulsar in a close binary with a companion having matter driven off of its surface by the pulsar wind. X-rays due to an intrabinary shock have been observed from many of these systems, as well as orbital variations in the optical emission from the companion due to heating and tidal distortion. We have been systematically studying these systems in radio, optical and X-rays. Here we will present an overview of X-ray and optical studies of these systems, including new XMM-Newton and NuStar data obtained from several of them, along with new optical photometry.

The vast majority of stars will become white dwarfs at the end of the stellar life cycle. These remnants are precise cosmic clocks owing to their well constrained cooling rates. Gaia Data Release 2 is expected to discover hundreds of thousands of white dwarfs, which can then be observed spectroscopically with WEAVE and 4MOST. By employing spectroscopically derived atmospheric parameters combined with Gaia parallaxes, white dwarfs can constrain the stellar formation history in the early developing phases of the Milky Way, the initial mass function in the 1.5 to 8 M⊙ range, and the stellar mass loss as well as the state of planetary systems during the post main-sequence evolution.

Gamma-ray burst host galaxies are deficient in molecular gas, and show anomalous metal-poor regions close to GRB positions. Using recent Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) Hi observations we show that they have substantial atomic gas reservoirs. This suggests that star formation in these galaxies may be fuelled by recent inflow of metal-poor atomic gas. While this process is debated, it can happen in low-metallicity gas near the onset of star formation because gas cooling (necessary for star formation) is faster than the Hi-to-H2 conversion.

We describe the first X-ray observations of binary millisecond pulsars PSR J0023+0923, J1810+1744, J2215+5135, and J2256−1024. All are Fermi gamma-ray sources and three are ‘black-widow’ pulsars, with companions of mass < 0.1 M⊙. Data were taken using the Chandra X-Ray Observatory and covered a full binary orbit for each pulsar. PSRs J2215+5135 and J2256−1024, show significant orbital variability and X-ray flux minima coinciding with eclipses seen at radio wavelengths. This is consistent with intrabinary shock emission characteristic of black-widow pulsars. The other two pulsars, PSRs J0023+0923 and J1810+1744, do not demonstrate significant variability, but are fainter than the other two sources. Spectral fits yield power-law indices that range from 1.4 to 2.3 and blackbody temperatures in the hundreds of eV. The spectrum for PSR J2215+5135 shows a significant hard X-ray component (41% of counts are above 2 keV), which is additional evidence for the presence of intrabinary shock emission.

The Pantanal is a large ecosystem located in South America. This preserved area is seasonally flooded due to abundant rainfall during the summer and the subsequent overflow of the Paraguai River. In this paper, we examine the helminth community structure in the wild rodent Thrichomys pachyurus during the wet and dry seasons in two locations of the preserved and cattle ranching areas in the Southern Pantanal. We identified 12 species of helminth, and, although we did not find any differences in species richness between locations within the Pantanal, we found that richness was higher during the wet season. Helminth species were largely aggregated in both farm locations and during seasons. The most common helminth species were more abundant during the dry season than during the wet season, which may have been due to the increased habitat availability and rodent population increase. The intensity of the infection also followed the same pattern for most helminths. The trichostrongylids (Heligmostrongylus crucifer, H. almeidai and Pudica cercomysi) were dominant at both farm locations. The land use of each area was not correlated with helminth diversity. However, species composition of the helminth community of T. pachyurus differed between locations and may be correlated with environmental differences between the habitats. The seasonality of the Pantanal was highly correlated with helminth parasitism in T. pachyurus.

We present HI data of the dwarf galaxy DDO 47, aimed at testing the hypothesis that dark halo triaxiality might induce non-circular motions resulting in rotation curves best fitted by cored halos, even if the dark matter halo is intrinsically cuspy. We performed a harmonic decomposition of the velocity field in order to search for alleged non-circular motions needed to “hide” a cusp: in DDO 47 non-circular motions are globally at a level of 2–3 km s-1, far from being sufficient to reconcile the observed rotation curve with the ΛCDM predictions. We conclude that the dark matter halo around DDO 47 is truly cored and that a cusp cannot be hidden by non-circular motions. More details are shown in Gentile et al. (2005).

Schistosomiasis is a health problem in Brazil and the role of rodents in maintaining the schistosome life-cycle requires further clarification. The influence of Schistosoma mansoni on a population of Nectomys squamipes was studied by capture-recapture (1st phase, from June 1991 to November 1995) and removal (2nd phase, from April 1997 to March 1999) studies at Sumidouro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During both phases coproscopic examinations were performed. At the 2nd phase the rodents were perfused and worms were counted. The population dynamics of parasites was studied. During the 1st phase, female reproductive parameters, longevity, recruitment and survivorship rates and migration patterns were studied in relation to schistosome prevalence. Water contamination (source of miracidia), abundance intermediate host and rodent migration were related to prevalence. The N. squamipes population was not obviously influenced by the infection, as shown by the high number of reproductive infected females, high longevity of infected individuals and the absence of a relationship between recruitment or survivorship rates and the intensity of schistosome infection. The data indicate that N. squamipes can increase transmission of S. mansoni in endemic areas and carry it to non-infected areas. Furthermore, this rodent can be used as an indicator of a transmission focus.

We present a detailed study of the electronics properties of individual silicon nano- crystals (nc-Si) elaborated by Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition on 1.2 nm thick SiO2 grown on Si (100). The combination of ultra thin oxide layers and highly doped substrates allows imaging the hemispherical dots by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. By analyzing the STM images, we deduce a size distribution, which ranges between 3 and 6 nm with a surface density around 1012 cm-2. Spectroscopic studies of single dots are made by recording the I(V) curves on the Si nanocrystal accurately selected with the metallic tip. These I(V) curves obtain on a single dot, exhibit Coulomb blockade and resonant tunneling effects. Coulomb pseudo gaps, Ec, between 0.15 and 0.2 V are measured for different dots. From the width and height of the staircases observed at bias greater than Ec, 60 meV and 40 pA respectively, capacitance of 0.5 to 1 aF and tunnel resistance of 3.5×108 and 5.7×109 Ohms are measured within the orthodox approximation for asymmetric junctions. We have determined, from experimental measurements, the energy of the first level confined in nc-Si.

It is suggested that the processes of charge injection and entrapment at the interfacial layer of Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 (PZT) film capacitors are responsible for both polarization fatigue and size effects on ferroelectric switching. The study of the charge injection by analyzing the dependence of coercive field on maximum polarization shows that there is a direct relationship between the charge injection properties and fatigue performance. Based on our results, we conclude that enhancement of charge relaxation at the interfaces of PZT capacitors results in two positive effects: improvement of polarization fatigue performance and suppression of size effects on ferroelectric switching, which are detrimental for low-voltage PZT film capacitors.

This idea has been implemented experimentally by introducing a thin RuO2 layer into the top-electrode interface of the Pt/PZT/Pt capacitor. PZT film capacitors of 100–170 nm thickness prepared in this way exhibited substantially improved fatigue in combination with weak size effects, which allows reduction of the operation voltage down to 0.8 V without degradation of the hysteresis properties. Our results show that the control of charge relaxation at the interface is a key issue for development of the low-voltage ferroelectric capacitors.

SIMOX wafers annealed at high temperature in argon or nitrogen ambient are compared in terms of film, oxide, interface, and device properties. This evaluation is conducted by correlating pseudo-MOSFET data in unprocessed wafers with the performance of n- and p-channel transistors. Characterization with the Ψ-MOSFET technique reveals a pile-up of nitrogen near the buried Si -SiO2 interface, where the electron mobility is degraded. MOSFET characteristics are dramatically affected by annealing in nitrogen with large shifts of front and back channel threshold voltages, enhanced leakage currents, and channel doping modification. Nitrogen-induced donors are suspected to be responsible for doping compensation in n-channels (leading to full-depletion mode operation) and overdoping in p-channels. By contrast to argon ambient, which has no major drawbacks, nitrogen ambient can be unsuitable for annealing of SIMOX wafers.
