Napoliite, ideally Pb2OFCl, is a new fluoroxychloride mineral found in a specimen from a fumarole formed subsequent to the 1944 eruption of Vesuvius volcano, Naples Province, Italy. It occurs as well-shaped lamellar crystals up to 0.25 × 0.25 × 0.01 mm typically forming clusters up to 0.4 × 0.4 mm on the surface of volcanic scoria in association with anglesite, artroeite, atacamite, calcioaravaipaite, cerussite, challacolloite, cotunnite, hephaistosite, manuelarossiite, matlockite and susannite. Napoliite is colourless with white streak and adamantine lustre. It is brittle and has a laminated fracture. Cleavage is perfect on {001}. Dcalc = 7.797 g cm–3. The calculated mean refractive index is 2.10. Chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe) is: PbO 91.71, F 3.89, Cl 7.34, –O=(F+Cl) –3.30, total 99.64. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 3 anions is Pb1.999O0.997F0.996Cl1.007. Raman spectroscopy confirms the absence of OH– groups and H2O molecules in the mineral. Napoliite is tetragonal, space group P42/mcm, a = 5.7418(11), c = 12.524(4) Å, V = 412.9(2) Å3 and Z = 4. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 3.860 (85) (111); 3.139 (20) (004); 2.914 (100) (113); 2.866 (63) (200); 2.118 (19) (204); 2.027 (19) (220); 1.665 (20) (313); and 1.642 (23) (117). The crystal structure was refined to R1 = 0.024 for 222 reflections with F > 4σ(F). It is based on lead oxide blocks derived from that of litharge PbO, which alternate with layers of chloride ions. Napoliite represents a new structure type with a unique order/disorder pattern of fluorine and oxygen atoms. The new mineral is dimorphous with rumseyite. It is named after the city of Naples (Napoli in Italian).

In terrestrial rocks, Br minerals are extremely rare with only nine minerals known where Br is a dominant component. A new arsenite bromide mineral ermakovite, (NH4)(As2O3)2Br, was discovered at the tract of Kukhi-Malik, Fan-Yagnob coal deposit, ca. 75 km N of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Ermakovite is a fumarolic mineral formed directly from gas from a natural underground coal fire. Associated minerals are sulfur, realgar, amorphous As-sulfides, salammoniac, alacránite, bonazziite and thermessaite-(NH4). In addition, there are amorphous As2S3 intergrowths associated with ermakovite. The mineral typically occurs as tabular or prismatic hexagonal crystals up to 200 μm with the following forms: c (001), m (010) and p (014). Spherulites and multi-twinned intergrowths are very common. The mineral is optically uniaxial (–), ω = 1.960 (5) and ɛ = 1.716(3) (589 nm). The measured density is 3.64(2) g/cm3. The mineral is insoluble in water, HCl, HNO3 and organic solvents. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of (As+Sb) = 4 atoms per formula unit is [(NH4)0.92Na0.01]0.93(As3.94Sb0.06)4.00O6.02(Br0.97Cl0.08I0.01)1.06. The strongest lines in the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)]: 9.160 (80)(001); 4.560(90)(002); 3.228(100) (102); 2.629(80)(110); and 2.522(60)(103). Ermakovite is hexagonal, P6/mmm, a = 5.271(3), c = 9.157(6) Å, V = 220.3(3) Å3 and Z = 1. The sandwich-type structure of ermakovite is based on three types of layers: (1) a honeycomb [As2O3] arsenite layer; (2) an NH4+ layer; and (3) a Br layer. The layer stacking sequence is ⋅⋅⋅NH4–As2O3–Br–As2O3–NH4⋅⋅⋅. Ermakovite has a synthetic analogue. Infrared and Raman spectra are also reported.

An overview of the processes that give rise to high concentrations of Br, leading to the formation of exotic Br minerals, is given.

Kainite, KMg(SO4)Cl⋅2.75H2O, is one of the most common hydrated sulfate minerals, and it plays an important role as a source of potassium. However, its properties and structure have, to date, been insufficiently studied. In our present work, kainite was investigated using multiple techniques, including single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The mineral is monoclinic, C2/m, a = 19.6742(2), b = 16.18240(10), c = 9.49140(10) Å, β = 94.8840(10)°, V = 3010.86(5) Å3 and Z = 16. The structure was refined to R1 = 0.0230 for 3080 unique observed reflections with |Fo| ≥ 4σF. The complex hydrogen bonding system for kainite is described for the first time. The structure of kainite contains seven symmetrically independent sites occupied by water molecules, six of which are strongly bonded to Mg2+ cations while the seventh resides in the framework cavities. The acceptors of the hydrogen bonds are either chloride anions, neighbouring water molecules or oxygens atoms of sulfate groups. A bifurcated hydrogen bond was described for one of the water molecules. Based on the analysis of the crystal structure, we have confirmed and propose the correct formula for kainite as KMg(SO4)Cl⋅2.75H2O. The thermal studies of kainite in the temperature range of –150°C to +600°C indicate its stability to 190°C. The decomposition products are K2Mg2(SO4)3, KCl and K2SO4. The thermal expansion was calculated, which for kainite has a character typical for monoclinic crystals and similar to the compressibility tensor described earlier.

We report the crystal structures of eight new synthetic multinary Rb–Cu sulfates representing four new structure types: δ-Rb2Cu(SO4)2, γ-RbNaCu(SO4)2, γ-RbKCu(SO4)2, Rb2Cu2(SO4)3, Rb2Cu2(SO4)3(H2O), β-Rb2Cu(SO4)Cl2, β-Rb4Cu4O2(SO4)4⋅(Cu0.83Rb0.17Cl) and Rb2Cu5O(SO4)5. The determination of their crystal structures significantly expands the family of anhydrous copper sulfates. Some of the anhydrous rubidium copper sulfates obtained turned out to be isostructural to known compounds and minerals. Rb2Cu5O(SO4)5 is isostructural to cesiodymite, CsKCu5O(SO4)5 and cryptochalcite, K2Cu5O(SO4)5. Rb2Cu2(SO4)3 also shows an example of crystallisation in the already known structure type first observed for synthetic K2Cu2(SO4)3. ‘Hydrolangbeinite’, Rb2Cu2(SO4)3(H2O), was formed as a result of a minor hydration of the initial mixture of reagents.

The minerals and synthetic framework compounds of the A2Cu(SO4)2 series demonstrate a vivid example of morphotropism with the formation of structural types depending on the size of the cations residing in the cavities of the [Cu(SO4)2]2– open framework. To date, five types (α, β, γ, δ and ε) can be distinguished. We propose to call this series of compounds ‘saranchinaite-type’, as the stoichiometry A2Cu(SO4)2 was first encountered during the discovery and description of saranchinaite, Na2Cu(SO4)2.

The discovery of β-Rb2Cu(SO4)Cl2, a new monoclinic polymorph of chlorothionite, seems to be of particular interest considering the recently discovered interesting magnetic properties of synthetic K2Cu(SO4)X2 (X = Cl and Br) and Na2Cu(SO4)Cl2.

In these new structural architectures, a number of features have been revealed that were seldom observed previously. The first is the bidentate coordination of the sulfate tetrahedron via edge-sharing with the Cu2+-centred coordination polyhedron. Until recently, such coordination was known only for the chlorothionite structure. The second is formation of ‘high-coordinate’ CuO7 polyhedra. The structures of the new compounds suggest that such coordination is not in fact so uncommon, at least among anhydrous alkali copper sulfates. All of the described features clearly indicate the importance of further systematic studies of anhydrous copper-sulfate systems. Their exploration, particularly of the new copper-oxide substructures with new coordination environments, is highly likely to lead to new potentially interesting magnetic properties due to the unusual arrangements of magnetically active Cu2+ cations.

In addition to experimental details on the synthesis of rubidium analogues of anhydrous potassium and sodium sulfates, this work also provides an analysis and a brief review of the geochemistry of rubidium in volcanic environments.

Hydration processes of primary anhydrous minerals as well as dehydration of the hydrated phases are relevant not only for answering geochemical and petrological questions, but are also interesting in the context of the theory of the ‘Evolution of minerals’. Our study of the evolution of anhydrous exhalative sulfates in hydration and dehydration processes has demonstrated the complexity of the processes for a number of minerals from the active high-temperature fumaroles of Tolbachik volcano (chalcocyanite Cu(SO4), dolerophanite Cu2O(SO4), alumoklyuchevskite K3Cu3AlO2(SO4)4 and itelmenite Na2CuMg2(SO4)4). Hydration and dehydration experiments were carried out for all four minerals using powder X-ray diffraction. A typical structural characteristic of several anhydrous copper sulfate minerals of fumarolic origin is the presence of oxygen-centred OCu4 tetrahedra. These are absent in the structures of all known hydrated minerals or synthetic compounds of the class under consideration. Hydration of minerals initially containing O2– anions as part of oxocomplexes, proceeds with sequential formation of a large series of hydroxysalts. On the contrary, hydration of itelmenite with its relatively complex ‘initial’ structure, but without additional oxygen atoms that are strong Lewis bases, results in formation of simpler hydrates. The lower the temperature and the larger the excess of water, the stronger the tendency of the cations to adopt higher hydration numbers thus outcompeting the sulfate anions as ligands. Ultimately, the water molecules completely expel the bridging sulfate anions from the metal coordination sphere yielding relatively simple fully hydrated structures.

A new mineral glikinite, ideally Zn3O(SO4)2, was found in high-temperature exhalative mineral assemblages in the Arsenatnaya fumarole, Second scoria cone of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976), Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Glikinite is associated closely with langbeinite, lammerite-β, bradaczekite, euchlorine, anhydrite, chalcocyanite and tenorite. It is monoclinic, P21/m, a = 7.298(18), b = 6.588(11), c = 7.840(12) Å, β = 117.15(3)°, V = 335.4(11) Å3 and R1 = 0.046. The eight strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d in Å (I) (hkl)] are: 6.969(56)(00$\bar{1}$), 3.942(52)(101), 3.483(100)(00$\bar{2}$), 3.294(49)(020), 2.936(43)(120), 2.534(63)(201), 2.501(63)(20$\bar{3}$) and 2.395(86)(02$\bar{2}$). The chemical composition determined by electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): ZnO 42.47, CuO 19.50, SO3 39.96, total 101.93. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of O = 9 apfu is Zn2.07Cu0.97S1.98O9 and the simplified formula is Zn3O(SO4)2. Glikinite is a Zn,Cu analogue of synthetic Zn3O(SO4)2. The crystal structure of glikinite is based on OZn4 tetrahedra sharing common corners, thus forming [Zn3O]4+ chains. Sulfate groups interconnect [Zn3O]4+ chains into a 3D framework.

A new mineral falgarite, K4(V+4O)3(SO4)5 was discovered at the tract of Kukhi-Malik, Fan-Yagnob coal deposit, ca. 75 km N of Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The new mineral is named after the Falgar, an ancient Sogdian name for an area around the Zeravshan riverhead. Falgarite is a fumarolic mineral formed directly from a gas emitted by a natural underground coal fire. Associated minerals are anhydrite, baryte, molybdite, an unidentified Tl-vanadyl sulfate, K–Mg sulfate and an anhydrous Mg-sulfate. Falgarite forms small isometric or pseudo-octahedral individual crystals (10–60 μm) of turquoise colour and spherical aggregates up to 0.5 mm in diameter. Mohs hardness is ~ 2.5, Dmeas = 2.87(2) and Dcalc = 2.89 g/cm3. Refractive indices are: α = 1.588(3), β(calc.) = 1.600(3) and γ = 1.609(2) (590 nm). In transmitted light falgarite is transparent green with a weak pleochroism. The mineral is non-soluble in H2O and 5% HNO3 at room temperature. Infrared spectra support the absence of H2O and OH–. The chemical composition determined by electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Na2O 0.55, K2O 20.76, Tl2O 1.83, VO2 29.38 and SO3 46.78, total 99.29. The empirical formula (based on 23 O apfu) is: (K3.76Na0.15Tl0.07)Σ3.98V3.02S4.99O23.0. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d,Å(I,%)(hkl)]: 3.20(70)(202); 3.17(80)024; 3.14(70)$\bar{2}$04; 3.01(50)$\bar{1}$51; and 2.88(100)151. Falgarite is monoclinic, P21/n, a = 8.7209(5), b = 16.1777(6), c = 14.4614(7) Å, β = 106.744(5)°, V = 1953.77(17) Å3, Z = 4 and R1 = 0.05. VO6 octahedra and SO4 tetrahedra link together by sharing corners thus forming a [(VO)3(SO4)5]4– framework. K+, Na+ and Tl+ cations are located in the channels of the framework. The synthetic K4(VO)3(SO4)5 analogue is known.

Akopovaite, ideally Li2Al4(OH)12(CO3)(H2O)3, is a new hydrotalcite-supergroup mineral from the Karasu–Karavshinskoye Sn deposit, Turkestan Range, Kyrgyzstan. It occurs as white or pale yellowish rosette-like aggregates that are composed of tiny curved plates up to 20–30 μm. Akopovaite is associated with gibbsite, quartz, albite, microcline, muscovite, montebrasite, siderite, schorl and birnessite-like Fe–Mn oxides. Akopovaite has a perfect cleavage along {001}, the mineral is transparent and very soft (VHN = 24 that corresponds to Mohs hardness of ca. 1). Dmeas = 2.12(2) g/cm3 and Dcalc = 2.106 g/cm3. The Raman spectra contain bands of carbonate groups and bands of O–H stretching vibrations. The chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe for Al and Fe; ICP-OES for Li; CHN method for CO2 and H2O) is Li2O 6.43, Al2O3 45.79, Fe2O3 0.27, CO2 10.09, H2O 36.1, total 98.68. The empirical formula based on (Li + Al + Fe) = 6 apfu is Li1.94(Al4.05Fe0.02)Σ4.07(OH)12(CO3)1.03(H2O)3.03. The crystal structure was refined by the Rietveld method with RB = 0.006 and Rwp = 0.014. Akopovaite is monoclinic, C2/m, a = 5.0953(6), b = 8.877(1), c = 7.806(1) Å, β = 102.572(6)°, V = 344.61(8) Å3 and Z = 1. The polytype should be denoted as 1M. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 7.66(100)(001), 4.397(27)(020), 3.821(45)(002,021), 2.4881(27)(200), 2.2273(16)(201) and 1.9027(18)(202). Akopovaite is the first naturally occurring hydrotalcite-supergroup carbonate species of Al and Li; its synthetic analogue is known.

Exhalative mineral assemblages from fumaroles of Tolbachik volcano are very rich in anhydrous sulfate minerals of alkali and transition metals. Koryakite, ideally NaKMg2Al2(SO4)6, was found in the Yadovitaya fumarole of the Second scoria cone of the North Breach of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976), Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Koryakite occurs as a product of fumarolic activity and closely associates with euchlorine and langbeinite. Koryakite is trigonal, R$\bar{3}$, a = 8.1124(11), c = 22.704(7) Å and V = 1294.0(5) Å3. The chemical composition determined by electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Na2O 4.27, K2O 5.85, ZnO 0.31, СaO 0.31, CuO 0.76, MgO 10.15, Al2O3 11.47, Fe2O3 2.73, SO3 64.33 and SiO2 0.13, total 100.31. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 24 O apfu is Na1.03K0.93(Mg1.89Cu0.07Ca0.04Zn0.03)Σ2.03(Al1.68Fe3+0.26)Σ1.94(S6.02Si0.02)Σ6.04O24. No natural or synthetic chemical analogues of koryakite are known to date. The topology of the [M2+2M3+2(SO4)6]2– heteropolyhedral framework in koryakite is very similar to the one in millosevichite, Al2(SO4)3 and mikasaite, Fe3+2(SO4)3. Replacement of part of the trivalent cations in the [M3+2(SO4)3]0 framework by divalent cations gives the framework a negative charge for koryakite and allows the incorporation of the alkali species in the channels. This structural mechanism is reminiscent of the concept of stuffed derivative structures. Koryakite is also structurally related to synthetic NaMgFe3+(SO4)3 and to the broader family of NASICON-related phases.

A new mineral majzlanite, ideally K2Na(ZnNa)Ca(SO4)4, was found in high-temperature exhalative mineral assemblages in the Yadovitaya fumarole, Second scoria cone of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976), Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Majzlanite is associated closely with langbeinite and K-bearing thénardite. Majzlanite is grey with a bluish tint, has a white streak and vitreous lustre. The mineral is soluble in warm water. Majzlanite is monoclinic, C2/c, a = 16.007(2), b = 9.5239(11), c = 9.1182(10) Å, β = 94.828(7)°, V = 1385.2(3) Å3 and Z = 16. The eight strongest lines of the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are [d, Å (I, %)(hkl)]: 3.3721(40)($\bar{3}$12), 3.1473(56)($\bar{4}$02), 3.1062(65)($\bar{2}$22), 2.9495(50)($\bar{1}$31), 2.8736(100)($\bar{1}$13), 2.8350(70)(421), 2.8031(45)(511) and 2.6162(41)($\bar{5}$12). The following structural formula was obtained: K2Na(Zn0.88Na0.60Cu0.36Mg0.16)(Ca0.76Na0.24)(S0.98Al0.015Si0.005O4)4. The chemical composition determined by electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Na2O 9.73, K2O 15.27, ZnO 11.20, CaO 7.03, CuO 4.26, MgO 1.07, Al2O3 0.47, SO3 51.34, SiO2 0.12, total 100.49. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 16 O apfu is K1.99Na1.93Zn0.84Ca0.77Cu0.33Mg0.16(S3.94Al0.06Si0.01)O16 and the simplified formula is K2Na(Zn,Na,Cu,Mg)Σ2(Ca,Na)(SO4)4. No natural or synthetic compounds directly chemically and/or structurally related to majzlanite are known to date. The topology of the heteropolyhedral framework in majzlanite is complex. An interesting feature of the structure of majzlanite is an edge-sharing of ZnO6 octahedra with SO4 tetrahedra.

Aleutite, ideally [Cu5O2](AsO4)(VO4)·(Cu0.5□0.5)Cl, was found in the Yadovitaya fumarole of the Second scoria cone of the Great Fissure Tolbachik eruption, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Aleutite occurs as individual crystals in the masses of polycrystalline anhydrite. Aleutite is monoclinic, C2/m, a = 18.090(2) Å, b = 6.2284(6) Å, c = 8.2465(9) Å, β = 90.597(2)°, V = 929.1(2) Å3 and Z = 4 (from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data). The empirical formula calculated on the basis of (As + V+Mo + Fe3+) = 2 atoms per formula unit is Сu5.40Zn0.05Ca0.01As1.09V0.84Mo0.04Fe0.03K0.05Pb0.02Rb0.01Cs0.01O9.97Cl1.07. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an agreement index R1 = 0.066. Aleutite has a new structure type. Aleutite is unique amongst natural and synthetic copper vanadates and arsenates, as it has As5+ and V5+ cations ordered over two tetrahedral sites. The topology of ${}_\infty ^1 [{\rm Cu_5O_2}]^{6 +} $ oxocentred bands in aleutite is novel and has not been described before in minerals and synthetic materials. The structural architecture of the ${}_\infty ^1 [{\rm Cu_5O_2}]^{6 +} $ band in aleutite can be derived from a kagome network and represents a one-dimensional slice from it. In addition, aleutite is an interesting and complex example of a natural salt-inclusion phase.

Dokuchaevite, ideally Cu8O2(VO4)3Cl3, was found in the Yadovitaya fumarole of the Second scoria cone of the North Breach of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976), Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Dokuchaevite occurs on the crusts of various copper sulfate exhalative minerals (such as kamchatkite and euchlorine) as individual prismatic crystals. Dokuchaevite is triclinic, P$\bar{1}$, a = 6.332(3), b = 8.204(4), c = 15.562(8) Å, α = 90.498(8), β = 97.173(7), γ = 90.896(13)°, V = 801.9(7) Å3 and R1 = 0.057. The eight strongest lines of the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are (d, Å (I)(hkl): (15.4396)(18)(00$\bar{1}$), (7.2762)(27)(0$\bar{1}$1), (5.5957)(43)(012), (4.8571)(33)($\bar{1}\bar{1}$1), (3.1929) (29)(023), (2.7915)(30)(202), (2.5645)(21)(032), (2.5220)(100)(1$\bar{3}$0), (2.4906)(18)(130) and (2.3267)(71)(2$\bar{2}$2). The chemical composition determined by electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): CuO 60.87, ZnO 0.50, FeO 0.36, V2O5 19.85, As2O5 6.96, SO3 0.44, MoO3 1.41, SiO2 0.20, P2O5 0.22, Cl 10.66, –O = Cl2 2.41, total 99.06. The empirical formula calculated on the basis of 17 anions per formula unit is (Cu7.72Zn0.06Fe0.05)Σ7.83(V2.20As0.61Mo0.10S0.06P0.03Si0.03)Σ3.03O13.96Cl3.04.

The crystal structure of dokuchaevite represents a new structure type with eight Cu sites, which demonstrate the remarkable diversity of Cu2+ mixed-ligand coordination environments. The crystal structure of dokuchaevite is based on OCu4 tetrahedra that share common corners thus forming [O2Cu6]8+ single chains. Two of the eight symmetrically independent copper atoms do not form Cu–O bonds with additional oxygen atoms, and thus are not part of the OCu4 tetrahedra, but provide the three-dimensional integrity of the [O2Cu6]8+ chains into a framework. TO4 mixed tetrahedral groups are located within the cavities of the framework. The structural formula of dokuchaevite can be represented as Cu2[Cu6O2](VO4)3Cl3.

The new mineral antofagastaite, ideally Na2Ca(SO4)2·1.5H2O, was found in the oxidation zone of sulfide–quartz veins at the abandoned Coronel Manuel Rodríguez mine, Mejillones, Antofagasta Province, Antofagasta Region, Chile. It is associated with sideronatrite, metasideronatrite, aubertite, gypsum, ferrinatrite, glauberite, amarillite and an unidentified Fe phosphate. Antofagastaite occurs as prismatic crystals up to 0.5 mm × 1 mm × 5 mm, elongated along [010], typically combined in open-work aggregates up to 1 cm across. Antofagastaite is transparent and colourless, with vitreous lustre. It is brittle; the Mohs’ hardness is ca 3. Cleavage is distinct on (001). Dmeas. is 2.42(1) and Dcalc. is 2.465 g cm−3. Antofagastaite is optically biaxial (–), α = 1.489(2), β = 1.508(2), γ = 1.510(2) and 2Vmeas. = 40(10)°. The IR spectrum is reported. Chemical composition (wt.%, electron microprobe, H2O determined by gas chromatography) is: Na2O 20.85, CaO 17.42, SO3 52.56, H2O 7.93, total 98.76. The empirical formula (based on 8 O atoms belonging to sulfate anions per formula unit with all H belonging to H2O molecules) is Na2.06Ca0.95S2.01O8·1.35H2O. Antofagastaite is monoclinic, P21/m, a = 6.4596(4), b = 6.8703(5), c = 9.4685(7) Å, β = 104.580(4)°, V = 406.67(5) Å3 and Z = 2. The strongest reflections of the powder XRD pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 9.17 (100) (001), 5.501 (57) (011), 3.437 (59) (020), 3.058 (43) (003), 2.918 (50) (2¯11), 2.795 (35) (013) and 2.753 (50) (121, 201). The crystal structure was solved based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data, R1 = 5.71%. The structure of antofagastaite consists of ordered and disordered blocks and is related to syngenite K2Ca(SO4)2·H2O. Incorporation of additional H2O molecules in the syngenite-type structure results in disorder of the one of the two tetrahedral sulfate groups occurring in antofagastaite. In addition to the above-reported type material, antofagastaite together with syngenite and blödite occurs in the Arsenatnaya fumarole, Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka, Russia.

Markhininite, ideally TlBi(SO4)2, was found in a fumarole of the 1st cinder cone of the North Breach of the Great Fissure Tolbachik volcano eruption (1975–1976), Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Markhininite occurs as white pseudohexagonal plates associated with shcherbinaite, pauflerite, bobjonesite, karpovite, evdokimovite and microcrystalline Mg, Al, Fe and Na sulfates. Markhininite is triclinic, P, a = 7.378(3), b = 10.657(3), c = 10.657(3) Å , α = 61.31(3), β = 70.964(7), γ = 70.964(7)º, V = 680.2(4) Å3, Z = 4 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The eight strongest lines of the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are (I/d/hkl): 68/4.264/111, 100/3.441/113, 35/3.350/222, 24/3.125/122, 23/3.054/202, 45/2.717/022, 20/2.217/331, 34/2.114/204. Chemical composition determined by electron microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Tl2O 35.41, Bi2O3 38.91, SO3 25.19, total 99.51. The empirical formula based on 8 O a.p.f.u. is Tl1.04Bi1.05S1.97O8. The simplified formula is TlBi(SO4)2, which requires Tl2O 35.08, Bi2O3 38.48, SO3 26.44, total 100.00 wt.%. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.055 on the basis of 1425 independent observed reflections. The structure contains four Tl+ and two Bi3+ sites in holodirected symmetrical coordination. BiO8 tetragonal antiprisms and SO4 tetrahedra in markhininite share common O atoms to produce [Bi(SO4)2]– layers of the yavapaiite type. The layers are parallel to (111) and linked together through interlayer Tl+ cations. The mineral is named in honour of Professor Yevgeniy Konstantinovich Markhinin (b. 1926), Institute of Volcanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Kamchatka peninsula, Russia, in recognition of his contributions to volcanology. Markhininite is the first oxysalt compound that contains both Tl and Bi in an ordered crystal structure.

Karpovite, ideally Tl2VO(SO4)2(H2O), was found in a fumarole of the 1st cinder cone of the North Breach of the Great Fissure Tolbachik volcano eruption (1975–1976), Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Karpovite occurs as bundles of white, needle-like crystals associated with shcherbinaite, pauflerite, bobjonesite, markhininite, evdokimovite and microcrystalline Mg, Al, Fe and Na sulfates. Karpovite is monoclinic, P21, a = 4.6524(4), b = 11.0757(9), c = 9.3876(7) Å , β = 98.353(2)º, V = 478.60(7) Å3, Z = 2 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The eight strongest lines of the X-ray powder diffraction pattern are (I/d/hkl): 64/4.289/012, 81/4.253/110, 38/3.683/111, 47/3.557/022, 100/3.438/21, 52/2.982/013, 59/2.945/112, 54/2.354/132. The chemical composition determined by the electron microprobe analysis is (wt.%) Tl2O 61.43, VO2 11.53, SO3 23.55, H2O 2.61, total 99.12. The empirical formula (calculated on the basis of 10 O a.p.f.u.) is Tl2.00V0.96S2.03O9(H2O). The simplified formula of karpovite is Tl2VO(SO4)2(H2O), which requires Tl2O 61.93, VO2 12.09, SO3 23.34, H2O 2.62 total 100.00 wt.%. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.026 for 4196 independent observed reflections. The structure contains two symmetrically independent Tl+ sites, one V4+ site and two S6+ sites. VO5H2O octahedra and SO4 tetrahedra link together by sharing corners to form kröhnkite-type stripes parallel to the a axis with their planes oriented parallel to (021) and (02). Tl+ cations are located between the chains, linked into a three-dimensional structure. The new mineral is named in honour of Professor Gennadii Alexandrovich Karpov (b. 1938), volcanologist at the Institute of Volcanology, Russian Academy of Sciences, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia.

Evdokimovite, ideally Tl4(VO)3(SO4)5(H2O)5, was found in a fumarole of the 1st cinder cone of the North Breach of the Great Fissure Tolbachik volcano eruption of 1975–1976, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Evdokimovite occurs as thin, colourless needles up to 0.09 mm long associated with shcherbinaite, pauflerite, bobjonesite, markhininite, karpovite and microcrystalline Mg, Al, Fe and Na sulfates. Evdokimovite is monoclinic, P21/n, a = 6.2958(14), b = 10.110(2), c = 39.426(11) Å , β = 90.347(6)º, V = 2509.4(10) Å3 and Z = 4 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The eight strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are (I/d/hkl): 57/9.793/011, 100/8.014/013, 26/6.580/006, 19/ 4.011/026, 29/3.621/118, 44/3.522/125, 19/3.010/036, 21/2.974/212. Chemical composition determined by the electron microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Tl2O 55.40, VO2 14.92, SO3 25.83, H2O 5.75, total 101.90. The empirical formula for evdokimovite calculated on the basis of (Tl + V + S) = 12 a.p.f.u. is Tl4.10V2.83S5.07H10.00O27.94. The simplified formula is Tl4(VO)3(SO4)5(H2O)5. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.11 on the basis of 3660 independent observed reflections. V4+O6 octahedra and SO4 tetrahedra share common corners to form two types of vanadyl-sulfate chains, [(VO)(H2O)2(SO4)2]2– and [(VO)2(H2O)3(SO4)3]2–. Thallium atoms are located in between the chains. The structure can be described as a stacking of layers of two types, A and B. The A layer contains [(VO)2(H2O)3(SO4)3]2– chains and the Tl2 and Tl3 atoms, whereas the B layer contains [(VO)(H2O)2(SO4)2]2– chains and the Tl1 atoms. Stacking of the layers can be described as ...A’*BAA’B*A*..., where A and A’ denote A layers with opposite orientations of the [(VO)2(H2O)3(SO4)3]2– chains, and the A* and B* layers are rotated by 180º relative to the A and B layers, respectively. [(VO)2(H2O)3(SO4)3]2– chains are modulated and are arranged to form elliptical tunnels hosting disordered Tl(4), Tl(4A) and Tl(4B) sites. The new mineral is named in honour of Professor Mikhail Dmitrievich Evdokimov (1940–2010), formerly of the Department of Mineralogy, St Petersburg State University, for his contributions to mineralogy and petrology, and especially for teaching mineralogy to several generations of students at the University. Evdokimovite is the most complex V4+ sulfate known to date with structural information amounting to 1130 bits per unit cell, which places evdokimovite among minerals with the complexity of the vesuvianite group.

The new mineral somersetite, has been found at Torr Works (‘Merehead quarry’) in Somerset, England, United Kingdom. Somersetite is green or white (typically it is similar visually to hydrocerussite-like minerals but with a mint-green tint), forms plates and subhedral grains up to 5 mm across and up to 2 mm thick. In bi-coloured crystals it forms very thin intergrowths with plumbonacrite. The empirical formula of somersetite is Pb8.00C5.00H4.00O20. The simplified formula is Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5, which requires: PbO = 87.46, CO2 = 10.78, H2O = 1.76, total 100.00 wt.%.

The infrared spectrum of somersetite is similar to that of plumbonacrite and, to a lesser degree, hydrocerussite. Somersetite is hexagonal, P63/mmc, a = 5.2427(7), c = 40.624(6) Å, V = 967.0(3) Å3 and Z = 2. The eight strongest reflections of the powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern [d,Å(I)(hkl)] are: 4.308(33)(103), 4.148(25)(104), 3.581(40)(107), 3.390(100)(108), 3.206(55)(109), 2.625(78)(110), 2.544(98)(0.0.16) and 2.119(27)(1.0.17). The crystal structure was solved from single-crystal XRD data giving R1 = 0.031. The structure of somersetite is unique and consists of the alternation of the electroneutral plumbonacrite-type [Pb5O(OH)2(CO3)3]0 and hydrocerussite-type [Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2]0 blocks separated by stereochemically active lone electron pairs on Pb2+. There are two blocks of each type per unit cell in the structure, which corresponds to the formula [Pb5O(OH)2(CO3)3][Pb3(OH)2(CO3)2] or Pb8O(OH)4(CO3)5 in a simplified representation. The 2D blocks are held together by weak Pb–O bonds and weak interactions between lone pairs.

Belousovite, ideally KZn(SO4)Cl, was found in a Yadovitaya fumarole of the Second scoria cone of the North Breach of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (1975–1976), Tolbachik volcano, Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Belousovite occurs as irregularly-shaped grains and in the form of microcrystalline masses associated with kamchatkite, langbeinite, euchlorine, anglesite and zincite. Belousovite is monoclinic, P21/c, a = 6.8904(5), b = 9.6115(7), c = 8.2144(6) Å, β = 96.582(2), V = 540.43(7) Å3 and Z = 4 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The eight strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [dmeas Å(I)(hkl)]: 6.8451(100)(100), (3.6401)(71)($\bar{1}$21), (3.1592)(84)(1$\bar{1}$2), (3.1218)(41)($\bar{2}$11), (3.1140)(52)(022), (2.9812)(41)(031), (2.9121)(44)(130) and (2.0483)(19)($\bar{3}$12). The chemical composition determined by the electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): K2O 19.55, Rb2O 0.58, ZnO 34.85, SO3 34.65, Cl 14.77, –O = Cl2 3.34, total 101.06. The empirical formula based on O + Cl = 5 apfu is K0.97Rb0.01Zn1.00S1.01O4.03Cl0.97. The simplified formula is KZn(SO4)Cl. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to R1 = 0.029 on the basis of 1965 independent observed reflections. The structure of belousovite consists of infinite [ZnSO4Cl]– layers and K+ ions. [ZnSO4Cl]– layers are formed by corner sharing mixed-ligand ZnO3Cl tetrahedra and SO4 tetrahedra. The topology of [ZnSO4Cl]– layers in belousovite is identical to [Si4O10]4– layers in the minerals of the apophyllite group. A review of mixed-ligand ZnOmCln coordination polyhedra in minerals and inorganic compounds is given.

Itelmenite, ideally Na2CuMg2(SO4)4, was found in a fumarole of the Naboko scoria cone of the Tolbachik volcano Fissure Eruption (2012–2013), Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. Itelmenite occurs as irregularly shaped grains as well as microcrystalline masses associated with anhydrite, saranchinaite, hermannjahnite, euchlorine, thénardite, aphthitalite and hematite. Itelmenite is orthorhombic, Pbca, a = 9.568(2) Å, b = 8.790(2) Å, c = 28.715(8) Å, V = 2415.0(11) Å3 and Z = 4 (from single-crystal diffraction data). The nine strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern are [d(I)(hkl)]: 7.9614(41)(102), 7.1803(32)(004), 5.9122(64)(112), 3.8455(87)(122), 3.6292(52)(214), 3.3931(62)(215), 3.0003(44)(027), 2.9388(100)(312) and 2.4975(56)(230). The chemical composition determined by the electron-microprobe analysis is (wt.%): Na2O 10.77, K2O 0.20, MgO 11.10, CuO 15.38, ZnO 5.61, SO3 56.42, total 99.48. The empirical formula based on O = 32 apfu is (Na3.93K0.05)Σ3.98Mg3.12(Cu2.19Zn0.78)Σ2.97S7.97O32. The simplified formula is Na2CuMg2(SO4)4 taking into account structural data. The crystal structure was solved by direct methods and refined to an agreement index R1 = 0.034 on the basis of 1855 independent observed reflections. The structure of itelmenite is based on a unique type of [A2+3(SO4)4]2– (A = Mg, Cu and Zn) heteropolyhedral framework with voids filled by Na+ cations.

Ammoniovoltaite, (NH4)2Fe2+5Fe3+3Al(SO4)12(H2O)18, is a new voltaite-group mineral. The mineral was discovered at the Severo-Kambalny (North-Kambalny) geothermal field, Kambalny volcanic ridge, Southern Kamchatka, Russia. Ammoniovoltaite forms at ~100°C around geothermal gas/steam vents in association with alunogen, tschermigite and pyrite. Crystals of ammoniovoltaite have euhedral habit, are up to 50 µm in size and grow on alunogen plates. Ammoniovoltaite is black with vitreous lustre, opaque, brittle and water-soluble. Neither cleavage nor parting is found, the fracture is conchoidal. The mineral is isotropic, with the refractive index n = 1.602(2) (589 nm). Infrared spectra contain an absorption band at 1433 cm–1 distinctive for the ammonium ion. The chemical composition is (iron content is given in accordance with Mössbauer data, H2O calculated from a crystal-structure refinement, wt.%): FeO 13.26, Fe2O3 11.58, MgO 2.33, ZnO 0.04, Al2O3 2.74, SO3 47.46, K2O 0.19, CaO 0.11, (NH4)2O 2.96, H2O 16.03, total 96.70. The empirical formula based on S = 12 atoms per formula unit is [(NH4)1.88K0.08Ca0.04]Σ2.00(Fe2+3.74Mg1.17Fe3+0.05Zn0.01)Σ4.97(Fe3+2.89Al0.09)Σ2.98Al1.00(SO4)12.00(H2O)18.00. The crystal structure has been refined to R1 = 0.031 and 0.030 on the basis of 1217 and 1462 unique reflections with I >2σ(I) collected at 100 K and room temperature, respectively. Ammoniovoltaite is the ammonium analogue of voltaite. The mineral is cubic, Fd$\bar{3}$c, a = 27.250(1) Å and V = 20234(3) Å3 (at 100 K); and a = 27.322(1) Å and V = 20396(3) Å3 (at RT), with Z = 16. The strongest lines of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern [d, Å (I, %) (hkl)] are: 9.67 (74) (022), 7.90 (56) (222), 5.58 (84) (422), 3.560 (100) (731), 3.418 (100) (008) and 2.8660 (37) (931). A brief review of ammonium minerals from various volcanically active geological environments is given.
