In 2008 European Commission launches the open access infrastructure for research in Europe project (OpenAIRE), supporting open access (OA) in scientific information and research output. In this paper, we assess the economic sustainability of the OpenAIRE project. The empirical strategy is developed through a Cost–Benefit Analysis framework to evaluate and compare the costs and benefits of OpenAIRE services to provide recommendations on the project’s economic efficiency and sustainability, a non-market valuation method based on the results of a “Choice Experiment” to calculate the Total Economic Value generated by OpenAIRE and a full preference ranking approach. Findings indicate that stakeholders prefer interoperability between research platforms and output, better access to scientific results and compliance to OA mandates. Furthermore, net social benefits for the basic services for 15 years are at least five times higher than costs’ present value while the potential R&D effect from research suggests even larger benefits in the long run. Subscriptions based on the estimated willingness to pay and cost, institutional subsidies and public awareness are the main recommendations for the sustainable operation of OpenAIRE. This study contributes to the literature on monetary valuation of the benefits and costs of OA to scientific knowledge.

We consistently show that in large equity markets, the dividend–price ratio is significantly related to the growth of future dividends. To uncover this relation, we use monthly dividends and a mixed data sampling technique, which allows us to address within-year seasonality. Our approach avoids the use of overlapping observations and at the same time reduces the impact of price volatility on the dividend–price ratio. An empirical analysis using market-level data from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan strongly supports the dividend growth predictability hypothesis, suggesting that time aggregation of dividends eliminates significant information.

In this paper we complete two tasks. First we extend the nonsmooth critical point theory of Chang to the case where the energy functional satisfies only the weaker nonsmooth Cerami condition and we also relax the boundary conditions. Then we study semilinear and quasilinear equations (involving the p-Laplacian). Using a variational approach we establish the existence of one and of multiple solutions. In simple existence theorems, we allow the right hand side to be discontinuous. In that case in order to have an existence theory, we pass to a multivalued approximation of the original problem by, roughly speaking, filling in the gaps at the discontinuity points.

In this paper we study quasilinear second order boundary value problems with multivalued right hand side and Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove three existence theorems. The first two deal with the “convex” and “nonconvex” problems respectively, while the third establishes the existence of extremal solutions. For the first two the proof is based on the theory of nonlinear operators of monotone type, while the proof of the third uses a fixed point argument.
