  • Volume II documents and analyses genocide and extermination throughout the early modern and modern eras. It tracks their global expansion as European and Asian imperialisms, and Euroamerican settler colonialism, spread across the globe before the Great War, forging new frontiers and impacting Indigenous communities in Europe, Asia, North America, Africa, and Australia. Twenty-five historians with expertise on specific regions explore examples on five continents, providing comparisons of nine cases of conventional imperialism with nineteen of settler colonialism, and offering a substantial basis for assessing the various factors leading to genocide. This volume also considers cases where genocide did not occur, permitting a global consideration of the role of imperialism and settler-Indigenous relations from the sixteenth to the early twentieth centuries. It ends with six pre-1918 cases from Australia, China, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe that can be seen as 'premonitions' of the major twentieth-century genocides in Europe and Asia.

  • Summary

    In the early twentieth-first century, settler colonialism emerged as one of the most identifiable paradigms of social and cultural analysis. This chapter assesses this paradigm’s conceptual origins and identifies the study of Indigenous genocide at its center. Drawing from readings of Patrick Wolfe’s work, this chapter highlights the utility of settler colonial studies for the study of genocide and identifies sets of problematics within certain works of genocide. It examines in particular the inability of historians of the United States to reconcile celebratory and/or exceptionalistic visions of North American history with the genocide of Indigenous peoples.

  • Summary

    Examining the pandemic relations of violence emerged across interior portions of seventeenth-century North America, this chapter assesses the displacement of colonialism onto Indigenous peoples. Starting with the French and Dutch colonization of Northeastern American watersheds, concentric waves of devastation radiated into interior Iroquoian and Algonquian-speaking communities, disrupting existing social, military, and economic relations. This chapter revisits the clash of the Wendat (Huron) and Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) confederacies in the first half of the Seventeenth century and situates this violent history within the broader imperial contests remaking Native North America.
