The present study was conducted to elucidate (1) the influence of kisspeptin (KP) on the in vitro development of preantral follicles (PFs) and (2) evolution of KP receptor gene (KISS1R) expression during ovarian follicular development in sheep. Kisspeptin was supplemented (0–100 µg/ml) in the culture medium of PFs for 6 days. The cumulus–oocyte complexes (COCs) from cultured PFs were subsequently matured to metaphase II (MII) for an additional 24 h. The proportions of PFs exhibiting growth, antrum formation, average increase in diameter, and maturation of oocytes to MII stage were the indicators of follicular development in vitro. The expression of the kisspeptin receptor gene at each development stages of in vivo developed (preantral, early antral, antral, large antral and COCs from Graafian follicles) and in vitro cultured PFs supplemented with KP was assessed using a real-time polymerase chain reaction. The best development in all the parameters under study was elicited with 10 µg/ml of KP. Supplementation of KP (10 µg/ml) in a medium containing other growth factors (insulin-like growth factor-I) and hormones (growth hormone, thyroxine, follicle-stimulating hormone) resulted in better PF development. The KISS1R gene was expressed in follicular cells and oocytes at all the development stages of both in vivo developed and in vitro cultured follicles. Higher KISS1R gene expression was supported by culture medium containing KP along with other hormones and growth factors. Accordingly, it is suggested that one of the mechanisms through which KP and other growth factors and hormones influence the ovarian follicular development in mammals is through the upregulation of expression of the KP receptor gene.

Sustainability of maize production systems is threatened by poor economic returns and resource intensiveness. Therefore, an experiment was conducted at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi during 2016–17 to 2017–18 to assess the effect of tillage and microbial inoculantsintegrated phosphorus (P) management on productivity, quality, economic outcome and energy dynamics of maize. Three tillage practices viz., CT–R (conventional tillage with no residue), ZT–R (zero tillage with no residue) and ZT + R (zero tillage with wheat crop residue at 2.5 Mg/ha) were assigned in main plots and five P management practices viz., P1 (control–NK as per recommendation, but no P), P2 (17.2 kg P/ha), P3 (17.2 kg P/ha + PSB), P4 (17.2 kg P/ha + compost inoculants) and P5 (34.4 kg P/ha) were allocated in subplots in three times replicated split-plot design. The maximum grain yield (5.96 Mg/ha), protein content (9.13%), protein yield (546 kg/ha) and gross energy returns (209 × 103 MJ/ha) were recorded under ZT + R while higher benefit: cost ratio (B: C ratio – the amount of economic gain per unit investment) (1.53) and energy efficiency (12.5) was noticed under ZT–R. Among the P management practices, the application of 34.4 kg P/ha recorded the highest grain yield (6.45 Mg/ha), protein content (9.34%), protein yield (603 kg/ha), B: C ratio (1.65) and energy efficiency (10.1). The results suggested that the application of P at the rate of 34.4 kg/ha under ZT + R is an economically robust approach for the quality maize production in semi-arid region.

Teosinte, the wild progenitor of maize, has immense potential for providing unique traits and is more divergent compared to inbred lines and landraces. One hundred and sixty-nine teosinte-introgressed maize backcross inbred lines were developed to widen the genetic base of maize with predomestication alleles. The population was evaluated phenotypically and genotypic data of 76 SSR markers were used to map quantitative trait loci (QTLs) governing the targeted traits. Sixty-six QTLs were detected for eight plant architect-related traits that are spread over 10 different chromosomes with phenotypic variation ranging from 2.29 to 13.97%. Maximum three stable QTLs were recorded for days to anthesis (DA) followed by two for days to silking (DS), plant height (PH) and node bearing first ear (NBE). For rest of three traits namely flag leaf length (FLL), flag leaf width (FLW) and ears per plant (E/P) only one stable QTL was detected. Among the 16 common QTLs, the marker phi328178-linked QTL governed four characters (DA, DS, FLL, FLW) simultaneously, followed by umc1622-linked (ASI, FLW, E/P), umc2341-linked (DA, DS, NBE) and phi075-linked QTLs (ASI, PH, NBE) controlling three traits each. Remaining 12 QTLs controlled two characters. Molecular association between co-localized QTLs for different traits was also validated at the phenotypic level by significant correlation estimates. For eight studied traits, 53 superior lines were identified which along with parents (teosinte and maize inbred DI-103) were grouped into 12 clusters. Therefore, lines clustered independently can be combined to accumulate desirable traits for the improvement of maize.

The Cretaceous chaetetid sponge Acanthochaetetes huauclillensis Sánchez-Beristain and García-Barrera is reported for the first time from the Aptian–Cenomanian Khalsi Formation, Ladakh Himalaya, India. Its low- to high-domical growth form could suggest an adaptation to either an environment with constant sedimentation rates, or to an irregular substrate. However, these growth forms also may indicate an absence of important environmental/sedimentological changes during the lifespan of the sponges. In addition, the growth form of this species suggests a calm, non-turbulent, reef-like microenvironment. Along with the other faunal assemblages, such as the rudists, corals, and the gastropod Nerinea, A. huauclillensis indicates a tropical to subtropical shallow marine carbonate platform setting. This new finding extends its stratigraphic range from the upper Hauterivian to the Aptian–Cenomanian interval in the eastern Tethyan realm.

Improving plant resistance against Fusarium wilt (FW) is key to sustaining chickpea production worldwide. Given this, the current study tested a set of 75 FW-responsive chickpea breeding lines including checks in a wilt-sick plot for two consecutive years (2016 and 2017). Genetic diversity analysis using 75 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) revealed a total of 267 alleles with an average of 3.56 alleles per marker. The entire set was divided into two major classes based on clustering method and factorial analysis. Similarly, STRUCTURE analysis placed the 75 genotypes into three distinct sub-groups (K = 3). Marker-trait association (MTA) analysis using the generalized linear model approach revealed nine and eight significant MTAs for FW resistance in the years 2016 and 2017, respectively. Three significant MTAs were obtained for FW resistance following the mixed linear model approach for both years. The SSR markers CESSR433, NCPGR21 and ICCM0284 could be potentially employed for targeted and accelerated improvement of FW resistance in chickpea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on association mapping of the genomic loci controlling FW (Foc2) resistance in chickpea.

Genetic improvement along with widened crop base necessitates for the detailed understanding of the genetic diversity and population structure in wheat. The present investigation reports the discovery of a total of 182 alleles by assaying 52 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) on 40 genotypes of bread wheat. Unweighted neighbour-joining method grouped these genotypes into two main clusters. Highly heat tolerant and intermediate tolerant cultivars were grouped in the same cluster, whereas remaining genotypes, particularly sensitive ones, were assigned different cluster. Similarly, the entire population was structured into two sub-populations (K = 2), closely corresponding with the other distance-based clustering patterns. The marker-trait association was discovered for four important physiological parameters, viz. canopy temperature depression, membrane thermostability index (MSI), normalized difference vegetation index and heat susceptibility index, indicating for heat stress (HS) tolerance in wheat. Both general and mixed linear models of association studies during 2017 and 2018, revealed the association of SSR markers, wmc222 (17.60%, PV) and gwm34 (20.70%, PV) with the mean phenotypic value of MSI. Likewise, SSR markers barc183, gwm75, gwm11 and cfd7 revealed a unique relationship with four selected physiological traits. Candidate genes discovered using in silico tools had nine SSR markers within the genic regions reported to play a role in heat and drought stress responses in plants. The information generated about these genic regions may be explored further in expression studies in-vivo to impart HS tolerance in bread wheat.

Sustainability of cereal-based cropping systems remains crucial for food security in South Asia. However, productivity of cereal–cereal rotations has declined in the long run, demonstrating the need for a sustainable alternative. Base crop, that is, common crop in different crop rotations, productivity could be used as a sustainability indicator for the assessment of different long-term crop rotations. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of grain legume inclusion in lowland rice–wheat (R-W) and upland maize–wheat (M-W) rotation on system’s base crop (rice in lowland and wheat in upland crop rotations) productivity and sustainability and also in soil fertility. Mung bean (April–May) inclusion in R-W rotation increased rice grain yield by 10–14%. In upland, mung bean inclusion in M-W rotation increased wheat grain yield by 5–11%. Replacing wheat with chickpea in R-W rotation increased rice grain yield by 5–8%. Increased base crop productivity in legume inclusive rotations was attributed to significant improvement in panicle (rice) or spike (wheat) attributes. Increased soil organic carbon and available nitrogen and phosphorus in the legume inclusive rotations significantly influenced the base crop productivity in both the production systems. Among the crop rotations, R-W-Mb (in lowland) and M-W-Mb (in upland) rotations had the highest system productivity and net return. Therefore, intensification/diversification of cereal–cereal rotations with grain legume could improve soil fertility and sustain crop productivity.

A 4.9-m-thick lake sequence, formed due to the landslide damming of a stream in the semiarid Garhwal Himalaya, was studied to understand past monsoonal variations in the region. The Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) chronology indicates that the lake existed between ~ 12 and ~ 7 ka ago. Chronologically constrained trends of sand percent, organic phosphorus (OP), apatite inorganic phosphorus (AIP) and parameters of environmental magnetism were measured in the paleolake profile. Measured proxies indicate that the Indian summer monsoon ameliorated in the early Holocene after 12 ka cooling, and it appears that all the proxies from the lake have captured this globally recognized early Holocene warming. Four phases of wet conditions (intensified monsoon) are recognized at ~ 11.5 ka, ~ 11–10.5 ka, ~ 10–9 ka and ~ 8–7 ka with maximum uncertainties of ~ 1000 years. The wet phases are characterized by high magnetic susceptibility, increased OP and reduced AIP. In an attempt to understand the primary forcing of the sharp fluctuations in monsoonal activity in the region, we show that changes in magnetic susceptibility match variations of residual atmospheric δ14C, suggesting a role for solar variability as an explanation of climatic variability.

In this paper we have reported analysis on activation energy and humidity sensing studies of Cu-doped ZnO thin films. Thin Films of undoped and Cu-doped ZnO nanomaterials were prepared. Undoped and Cu-doped ZnO thin films annealed at 600 °C showed the best results with sensitivity of 20.63 MΩ/%RH and 39.14 MΩ/%RH respectively in the 15–95% RH range. Low value of activation energy indicated that this sensing element had low operating temperature and could be used at room temperature. Other parameters like response time, recovery time, hysteresis, and aging effects were also studied. The crystallite size for the sensing element of pure ZnO annealed at 600 °C calculated from Scherrer's formula is in the 24–38 nm range. For the sensing element of 7% Cu doped ZnO the range of crystallite size is 25–41 nm. The average grain size as measured from SEM micrograph for 7% Cu doped ZnO and pure ZnO sensing elements were 36 and 42 nm, respectively.

In earlier studies, proteomic characterization of splenic amastigote fractions from clinical isolates of Leishmania donovani, exhibiting significant cellular responses in cured Leishmania subjects, led to the identification of cytosolic tryparedoxin peroxidase (LdcTryP) and chaperonin-TCP20 (LdTCP20) as Th1-stimulatory proteins. Both the proteins, particularly LdTCP20 for the first time, were successfully cloned, overexpressed, purified and were found to be localized in the cytosol of purified splenic amastigotes. When evaluated against lymphocytes of cured Leishmania-infected hamsters, the purified recombinant proteins (rLdcTryP and rLdTCP20) induced their proliferations as well as nitric oxide production. Similarly, these proteins also generated Th1-type cytokines (IFN-γ/IL-12) from stimulated PBMCs of cured/endemic Leishmania patients. Further, vaccination with rLdcTryP elicited noticeable delayed-type hypersensitivity response and offered considerably good prophylactic efficacy (~78% inhibition) against L. donovani challenge in hamsters, which was well supported by the increased mRNA expression of Th1 and Th2 cytokines. However, animals vaccinated with rLdTCP20 exhibited comparatively lesser prophylactic efficacy (~55%) with inferior immunological response. The results indicate the potentiality of rLdcTryP protein, between the two, as a suitable anti-leishmanial vaccine. Since, rLdTCP20 is also an important target, for optimization, further attempts towards determination of immunodominant regions for designing fusion peptides may be taken up.

Thinning a large concentric ring array by an evolutionary algorithm needs to handle a large amount of variables. The computational time to find out the optimum elements set increases with the increase of array size. Moreover, thinning significantly reduces the directivity of the array. In this paper, the authors propose a pattern synthesis method to reduce the peak sidelobe level (peak SLL) while keeping first null beamwidth (FNBW) of the array fixed by thinning the outermost rings of the array based on Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA). Two different cases have been studied. In the first case only the outermost ring of the array is thinned and in the second case the two outermost rings are thinned. The FNBW of the optimized array is kept equal to or less than that of a fully populated, uniformly excited and 0.5 λ spaced concentric ring array of same number of elements and rings. The directivity of the optimized array for the above two cases are compared with an array optimized by thinning all the rings, while keeping the design criteria same as the above two cases. The optimized array by thinning the outermost rings gives higher directivity over the optimized array by thinning all the rings. Time required for computing the optimum elements state for the above two cases using GSA are shown lesser compared to the optimized array by thinning all the rings using the same algorithm. The peak SLL and the FNBW of the optimized array for the above two cases are also compared with the optimized array by thinning all the rings.

The effect of Al doping on the reflective properties of TiO2 nanoparticles, synthesized by sol–gel method, has been investigated. It has been observed that with Al doping, the phase transition temperature for anatase to rutile phase increases; however, no change in morphology has been observed. No additional absorption edge was found in the absorption spectra, but a weak luminescent peak was noticed in the photoluminescence spectra. TiO2nanoparticles with 0.1% Al doping show higher photostability with practically no change in reflectance. A coating material has been prepared by dispersing these synthesized nanoparticles in water solution of organic binder. Coating material parameters such as pigment to binder weight ratio, solvent ratio, pH of solution have been taken into care to make the coating material flowable with good ability to adhere. Their coating was applied on a plastic substrate with different coating thicknesses to design light reflectors. These reflectors have been found to have diffuse reflectance of 98.17–98.29% for the 0.25-mm-thick coating.

Continuous cultivation of rice–wheat cropping system in the Indo-Gangetic plains is under threat with decline in soil organic carbon (SOC), total factor productivity and overall sustainability. Pulses, an important component of crop diversification, are known to improve soil quality through their unique ability of biological N2 fixation, leaf litter fall and deep root system. Therefore, the effect of inclusion of pulses in the puddled rice system under organic and inorganic amendments on SOC pool and its management indices were evaluated in a long-term experiment after seven cropping cycles. The results indicated that inclusion of pulses in the rice-based system improved the SOC content, being greater in surface soil (0–20 cm) and declining with soil depth. Among the four carbon fractions determined, less labile carbon fraction (Cfrac3) was the dominant fraction in the puddled rice system, particularly under organic treatments, indicating that it is possible to maintain organic carbon for longer time in this system. The rice–wheat–mung bean system resulted in 6% increase in SOC and 85% increase in soil microbial biomass carbon as compared with the conventional rice–wheat system. Application of crop residues, farm yard manure (5 t ha−1) and biofertilisers had greater amount of carbon fractions and carbon management index (CMI) over control and the recommended inorganic (NPKSZnB) treatment in the soil surface, particularly in the system where pulses are included. Interestingly, in the puddled rice system, passive carbon pool is more in surface soil than deeper layers. The relative proportion of active carbon pool in surface layer (0–20 cm) to subsurface layer (20–40 cm) was highest in rice–wheat–rice–chickpea (1.14:1) followed by rice–wheat–mung bean (1.07:1) and lowest in the rice–wheat system (0.69:1). Replacing wheat with chickpea either completely or during alternate year in the conventional rice–wheat system also had positive impact on SOC restoration and CMI. Therefore, inclusion of pulses in the rice-based cropping system and organic nutrient management practices had significant impact on maintaining SOC in an Inceptisol of the Indo-Gangetic plains of India.

Here we introduce a multifunctional copolymer network system with adjustable thermomechanical properties, which is also capable to show a substantial water uptake and in this way should allow the additional alteration of the overall elastic properties besides the variation of the crosslinking density. The swelling capacity in water, the thermal properties as well as the crystallinity of a series of grafted copolymer networks named CLEG composed of water swellable poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) side chains and crystallizable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) segments acting as covalent crosslinker were explored in an aqueous environment.

The water swelling capability of the CLEG polymer networks was found to increase from 120% to 240% with increasing weight content of PEG. In contrast to the dry state, where two well separated melting temperatures could be observed for all CLEG samples, in aqueous environment only one melting temperature slightly above 40 °C, was obtained, whereby the overall crystallinity after swelling with water was strongly related to the PCL content in the CLEG polymer networks.

Thermo-sensitive multiphase polymer networks with triple-shape capability have been recently introduced as a new class of active polymers that can change on demand from a first shape A to a second shape B and from there to a permanent shape C. Such multiphase polymer networks consist of covalent cross-links that determine shape C and at least two phase-segregated domains with distinct thermal transitions Ttrans,A and Ttrans,B , that are associated to shape A and B. In general the application of a two step programming or a one step programming procedure is required for creation of triple-shape functionality. In this study we report about a series of CLEGC nanocomposites consisting of silica coated nanoparticles (SNP) incorporated in a multiphase graft polymer network matrix from crystallisable poly(ε-caprolactone) diisocyanatoethyl methacrylate (PCLDIMA) and poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether monomethacrylate (PEGMA) forming crystallisable side chains. These CLEGC nanocomposites were designed to enabling non contact activation of triple-shape effect in alternating magnetic field. Composites with variable PCLDIMA content ranging from 30 wt-% and 70 wt-% and different SNP amounts (0 wt-%, 2.5 wt-%, 5 wt-% and 10 wt-%) were realized by thermally induced polymerization. The thermal and mechanical properties of the CLEG nanocomposites were explored by means of DSC, DMTA and tensile tests. The triple-shape properties were quantified in cyclic, thermomechanical experiments, which consisted of a two step programming procedure and a recovery module under stress-free conditions for recovery of shapes B and C. While the thermal properties and the Young’s modulus of the investigated polymer networks were found to be independent from the incorporated amount of SNP, the elongation at break (εB) decreases with increasing nanoparticle content. All investigated composites exhibit excellent triple-shape properties showing a well separated two step shape recovery process.
