Faint dwarf galaxies such as those found around the Milky Way (MW) display the largest known dynamical mass-to-light ratios (up to several 100s M⊙/L⊙). However, tidal interaction with the MW may impact the dynamical equilibrium in the outer parts of some of these objects, and partly affect the derived dynamical M/L. Assessing this is crucial for the study of the dark matter content of these galaxies. A clear sign of ongoing tidal disturbance would be the presence of tidal tails. These are expected to be low surface brightness features, hence difficult to detect from star counts in systems where contamination is also present, e.g. from foreground MW stars. At present we have searched for these sorts of tidal features in the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph), by adopting the Matched Filter Method (e.g. Rockosi et al. 2002), a very efficient technique to decontaminate stellar density maps with a high ratio of contamination versus source density (dwarf galaxies outer regions or ultra faint dwarf galaxies). We also calculate structural parameters from the position of stars without requiring spatial binning (Richardson et al. 2011), through a Bayesian MCMC (Foreman-Mackey et al. 2013).

We present the results from the state-of-the-art wide-field survey of the M81 galaxy group that we are conducting with Hyper Suprime-Cam on Subaru Telescope. Our photometry reaches about 2 mag below the tip of the red giant branch (RGB) and reveals the spatial distribution of both old and young stars over an area of 5°2 around the M81. The young main-sequence (MS) stars closely follow the HI distribution and can be found in a stellar stream between M81 and NGC 3077 and in numerous outlying stellar associations. Our survey also reveals for the first time the very extended (>2 × R25) halos of RGB stars around M81, M82, and NGC 3077, as well as faint tidal streams that link these systems. The gravitational interactions between M81, M82 and NGC 3077 galaxies induced star formation in tidally stripped gas, and also significantly perturbed the older stellar components leading to disturbed halo morphologies.

Stars in low-mass dwarf galaxies show a larger range in their chemical properties than those in the Milky Way halo. The slower star formation efficiency make dwarf galaxies ideal systems for testing nucleosynthetic yields. Not only are alpha-poor stars found at lower metallicities, and a higher fraction of carbon-enhanced stars, but we are also finding stars in dwarf galaxies that appear to be iron-rich. These are compared with yields from a variety of supernova predictions.

Background: The objective of the study was to model urban evacuation into surrounding communities after the detonation of an improvised nuclear device (IND) to assist rural and suburban planners in understanding and effectively planning to address the effects of population surges.

Methods: Researchers developed parameters for how far evacuees would travel to escape disasters and factors that would influence choice of destination from studies of historical evacuations, surveys of citizens' evacuation intentions in hypothetical disasters, and semistructured interviews with key informants and emergency preparedness experts. Those parameters became the inputs to a “push-pull” model of how many people would flee in the 4 scenarios and where they would go.

Results: The expanded model predicted significant population movements from the New York City borough of Manhattan and counties within 20 km of Manhattan to counties within a 150-mi radius of the assumed IND detonation. It also predicted that even in some communities located far from Manhattan, arriving evacuees would increase the population needing services by 50% to 150%.

Conclusions: The results suggest that suburban and rural communities could be overwhelmed by evacuees from their center city following an IND detonation. They also highlight the urgency of educating and communicating with the public about radiation hazards to mitigate panic and hysteria, anticipating the ways in which a mass exodus may disrupt or even cripple rescue and response efforts, and devising creative ways to exercise and drill for an event about which there is great denial and fatalism.

We investigate the role of asymmetries in the line spread function of the 2-degree field (2dF) spectrograph and the variations in these asymmetries with the CCD, the plate, the time of observation, and the fibre. A data-reduction pipeline is developed that takes these deformations into account for the calibration and cross-correlation of the spectra. We show that, using the emission lines of calibration lamp observations, we can fit the line spread function with the sum of two Gaussian functions representing the theoretical signal and a perturbation of the system. This model is then used to calibrate the spectra and generate templates by downgrading high-resolution spectra. Thus, we can cross-correlate the observed spectra with templates degraded in the same way. Our reduction pipeline is tested on real observations and provides a significant improvement in the accuracy of the radial velocities obtained. In particular, the systematic errors that were as high as ∼20 km s−1 when applying the AAO reduction package 2DFDR are now reduced to ∼5 km s−1. Even though the 2dF spectrograph is to be decommissioned at the end of 2005, the analysis of archival data and previous studies could be improved by the reduction procedure we propose here.

We have undertaken a large, multi-colour, photometric, survey of distant (D > 500 kpc) Local Group dwarf galaxies with the Subaru SuprimeCam wide field camera. These data reach to below the horizontal branch level of these systems, to a depth equivalent to earlier HST WFPC2 studies but over an area ∼ 100 times larger, making them ideal for studies of the global stellar content and structural characteristics of these systems. All eight of our targets show radial gradients and spatially distinct, multiple structural components. This implies that dwarf galaxies in general possess multiple stellar components, akin to larger galaxies. Dynamical models of these systems which do not account independently and consistently for each individual density component may be limited in their applicability.

How clumpy are galactic halos? Recent observations around both the Milky Way and the Andromeda galaxy (M31) have revealed numerous faint stellar streams and dwarf galaxies, leading to the belief that more of these may yet remain undetected. In this contribution, we present the map produced from the Megacam/CFHT survey that our group has undertaken in the outer halo of M31 and that, for the first time, gives a deep panoramic view of a significant region of the outer halo of a spiral galaxy. This panoramic survey, which covers ∼ 60 sq. deg. of the southern quadrant of the M31 halo, extends the WFC/INT survey of the inner halo (Ferguson et al. 2002) from a projected distance of ∼ 50 to ∼ 150 kpc. It is deep enough to cover three magnitudes below the tip of the red giant branch of stellar populations at the distance of M31. The survey reveals:

• • Three faint dwarf galaxies with absolute magnitudes in the range -7.3 < M_V < -6.4 and the most remote M31 globular cluster at a projected distance of ∼ 120 kpc from M31 (see Martin et al. 2006 for more details).

• • That the giant stream of Ibata et al. (2001) covers a much wider area than previously expected from shallower surveys, has an apocenter at 125±25 kpc from M31 and is probably due to the accretion of a small disk galaxy.

• • A new stellar stream or shell approximately perpendicular to the minor axis of M31 at a projected distance of 120 kpc and with a metallicity of [Fe/H] ∼ -1.5 (assuming it is at the distance of M31).

• • A new stellar stream along the ma jor axis of M31 that extends to at least 100 kpc from M31 with [Fe/H] ∼ -1.3 (once again assuming it is at the distance of M31).

• • Regions void of any stellar structure brighter than 34-35 mag/arcsec2 at a distance of 100 to 130 kpc from M31.

The survey shows that the outer halo of the Andromeda galaxy is very structured, in qualitative agreement with recent cosmological simulations (e.g. Bullock & Johnston, 2005).

There is now considerable interest in how stellar streams in the Milky Way can be used to probe how the earlier merger history of our galaxy, which in turn can be related to hierarchical models of galaxy evolution.

We have compiled a sample of globular clusters with high-resolution abundances from the literature to compare to the chemistries of stars in the Galaxy and those in dwarf spheroidal galaxies using the [α/Fe] and light r-process element ratios. From existing kinematic data we are able to analyze the populations according to their Galactic components (bulge, thin disk, thick disk, and halo). We find that most globular clusters mimic the Galactic field population arguing for a similar chemical evolution history. Possible extragalactic globular clusters are also noted.

The satellite system of M31 is the next closest satellite system to our own, and is well within reach of current generations of ground-based instrumentation. We have conducted a survey of this system with the Isaac Newton Telescope Wide Field Camera, particularly focussing on the seven dwarf spheroidal companions, and derived homogeneous, fundamental information for them. This reveals the presence of severe tidal distortion and multiple structural components in some systems. In addition, a comparison of the M31 dwarf spheroidals to their Galactic counterparts shows that the M31 dwarf spheroidals have scale radii generally twice as large as the Galactic dwarfs, suggesting that the tidal field of M31 may be substantially weaker than that for the Galaxy. A Keck/DEIMOS study of the newly discovered satellite And IX suggests that this galaxy has an anomalously large metallicity for its luminosity, and shows it to be strongly dark matter dominated.

In this experimental paper the influence of the grain size, of the thermal history and of the nominal composition on the nanochemistry at the interfaces in α-alumina submicronic powders are analyzed. The consequences on the physical and chemical properties are also discussed. Nanocrystalline Mg-doped α-alumina powders (550 and 1650 ppm by wt MgO) were prepared by the alum process. These powders (10-400 nm) were characterized by X-ray diffraction, SEM, TEM, XPS and surface area measurements (BET). In agreement with BET analysis, SEM observations show that the grain size increases with annealing time and annealing temperature. This effect is less pronounced in the highly doped samples. The less doped samples are also less aggregated and sintering bridges between the grains are still observed. XPS shows that Mg segregates at the periphery of the grains on a depth ≤0.5 nm. The dopant segregation is stronger when the nominal amount of Mg increases, leading eventually to the formation of MgAl2O4 precipitates near the grain surface. It is possible to observe an increase of the dopant segregation with grain size in the low Mg concentration powders. Other impurities like Si or higher cooling rates also favour this Mg segregation. However, the rate of cooling is so effective that it can overshadow all the other parameters (grain size, impurities,…), suggesting that this is certainly the key parameter for obtaining a perfect sintering of these ceramics, as experimentally shown.

We report on a search for QSOs via variability and zero-proper motion. Candidates were selected by means of indices for overall variability, long-term variability, proper motion and image structure measured on a large number of Schmidt plates with a time-baseline of three decades. Spectroscopic follow-up observations of the candidates brighter than the pre-estimated completeness limit, Blim ≈ 19.7, of the survey revealed about 200 QSOs and Seyfert 1s with redshifts z ≈ 0 — 3. We describe the survey strategy and discuss the properties of the resulting QSO sample.

With the ultimate goal of distinguishing between various models describing the formation of galaxy halos (e.g., radial collapse, chaotic mergers), we present the results of a spectroscopic study of the globular cluster system of M31. We have obtained deep, intermediate-resolution spectra for several hundred of the M31 globular clusters using the WYFFOS fibre-fed spectrograph at the William Herschel Telescope. These observations have yielded precise radial velocities and metallicities for over 200 members of the M31 globular cluster population, the vast majority of which represent new data or significant improvements over pre-existing data.

Coordinates are listed for 26 carbon stars which are radial velocity members of the Sagittarius Dwarf Galaxy (SDG). Their near-infrared properties indicate that most are on an extended Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB), and the total number of such stars in the SDG is estimated at about 100. At least one-third of the C stars studied are large amplitude, i.e. Mira, variables; these are the first Miras to be found in a dSph galaxy. Surprisingly, the most luminous C star is not a Mira, but a low amplitude variable.

A comparison of the properties of C stars in the Bulge and in the SDG indicates that the two groups cannot be drawn from the same population. It is therefore highly unlikely that the Bulge C stars are, contrary to previous suggestions, related in any way to the SDG.

Many direct attempts to measure the proper motions of Galactic satellite galaxies are either in progress or have recently been completed. In this review I will summarise and examine the current state of knowledge in this field and will also highlight several indirect methods that can be used as alternative estimators or constraints on the proper motions of satellite galaxies throughout the Local Group. A good example of this latter approach is provided by the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, where ongoing tidal disruption of the system has left a giant arc of debris tracing out its orbital path.

The degree of microlensing induced amplification is dependent upon the size of a source. As quasar spectra consist of the sum of emission from different regions this scale dependent amplification can produce spectral differences between the images of a macrolensed quasar. This paper presents the first direct spectroscopic evidence for this effect, providing a limit on the scale of the continuum and the broad line emission regions at the center of a source quasar (2237+0305). Lack of centroid and profile differences in the emission lines indicate that substructure in the broad emission line region is > 0.05 parsecs.

We are using the UK Schmidt telescope (UKST) to carry out a new objective prism survey, covering 2000-3000 square degrees of high galactic latitude sky in the equatorial region. The survey is targeted at discovering both bright (R < 18) quasars in general and bright high redshift (2 < z < 4) quasars in particular, which will be valuable for high resolution spectroscopic follow-up studies. We are using a mixture of ultra-violet excess (XJVX) and a new template matching technique to identify all the bright quasars. Details of the project are discussed and some preliminary results of the survey are presented.
